They had Phoebe either making sexual innuendo about Chandler in front of Monica or demeaning his masculinity or trying to make Monica and Chandler feel insecure about their relationship in some way. Even after their engagement when they were all going to the Plaza Phoebe didn't want to get ready until she forced her song onto Monica with lyrics saying when she first met Chandler she thought he was gay.... not to mention how hard she shipped Ross & Rachel's kiss overshadowing Mondler. I love Lisa and her great acting but the writers really did her a disservice having her be portrayed as that kind of "friend".
Finally a sensible fan. Phoebe was one of the worst but people always chose to see the kooky side of her that had a painful past. Phoebe is proof that having pain doesn't make you a good person.

The fact that she gave birth to her brother's children or forgived her father shows she was strong. While Ursula her twin sister in the same circumstances turned out to be a psychopath. But Phoebe was weird. her way of life created certain issues in her. She shipped roschel more because she understood toxic relationship more as compared to healthy one. She did not try to break Mondler. She was not sure thay this kind of healthy relationship van exist plus I feel she was also trying to check how strong would Chandler be - since he had commitment issues. She did create rift but this proved them to be stronger in their relationship than roschel, these incidents would have been enough for them to drift apart but not to Mondler. And she did try to mend things. She told Chandler jn Vegas to go back to Monica. Which means she was weird not mean, she did not understand it, but she supported it after realising tht they were meant to be
That's right! Thank you! And if she was jealous, than the way she acts just proves that Rachel, despite her flaws and occasional pettiness, is a better friend to Mondler. Even though she makes fun of Chandler sometimes, honestly they all kind of do at one point or another, which makes me sad, she remained supportive even though when the two got engaged, she said that she was jealous of them finding love. She did get jealous, but she did not lash out. Phoebe did it just because. You're absolutely correct about the way the writers portrayed her in the later seasons. Not so much funny anymore as just petty and cruel.

At the risk of getting killed by her fans, this is one of the reasons why I dislike Phoebe. She basically has no filter or restrain : she just says or does whatever she wants to, not caring about the consequences and when there are consequences, she doesn’t even consider that she’s responsible or is like « whatever, I’ll just act like this isn’t my fault » and barely cares for those she might have offended. Sometimes, she could be really rude, disrespectful and insensitive towards others, even people she would call her friends. Look, I love all these six characters to pieces. But in moments like these, I cannot help but wonder if Phoebe is just being her usual self, or if she's being deliberately mean spirited towards Chandler, of all people. @@superjackster0165there WAS a writer’s strike for awhile, if I remember correctly. That’s when the writing changed, and it was more forced comedy. Joey got child-like, phoebe got mean, and Monica got loud. I stopped watching for a couple of years bc it just wasn’t that funny anymore. But then later, when Rachel had her baby, the writing started getting good again.
Honestly this video kinda shows the flaws in Phoebe and Monica. Monica is a major hypocrite; she keeps so many secrets from Chandler, yet gets mad at him if he gets upset over it or keeps a secret from her. And Phoebe is just outright an ass to Chandler and some of the other friends besides Joey. I feel like Chandler and Rachel were the only good friends of the 6, but only if we exclude Rachel’s relationship with Ross where both of them were equally horrible to each other.

Phoebe turned awful around Season 5 lmao. Her and Chandler have such a uniquely great friendship in Season 3 where they often team up on subplots together. Then from about Season 6 they really, really push her and Joey as closer friends and have Phoebe start being extremely condescending, nasty and random, particularly towards Chandler and somewhat Ross. I'm up to the Vegas episode and Phoebe's at it already. It really is around Season 6 it becomes a little nonstop that she turns nasty and patronising, acting like she's the mainstay of the group despite actually being the one everyone knows could 'lift right out'. 'Now you're just my annoying friend Chandler'. 'Wow, I owe Rachel 20 bucks' 'It's only Chandler' Monica: 'If I can meet a great guy, so can you' Phoebe (blatantly in the face of Monica rightfully calling Chandler a great guy): 'Yeah we both can. And we both will!' Chandler is a better man than Phoebe could dream of. And yet ironically? She did meet a guy about as close to later seasons Chandler as you can get, in David. And she passed him up for Mike the wang? And that's not discounting Paul Rudd's unsurpassable charisma that allowed Mike to stay as long as he did but Mike as a character was no way on David's level and yet Phoebe has the audacity to act like she has any kind of say in what does or doesn't make a good relationship, what does or doesn't make a good man? Insanity! >Invites herself onto Monica and Chandler's anniversary trip then forces them to allow her to come, invites everyone else onto their trip then tells Chandler about Richard. That's not excusing Chandler of freaking out over less than nothing but Phoebe was the catalyst and began to do this constantly in between Monica and Chandler in the later seasons. It's a shame because Lisa Kudrow is actually hysterical, one of the most consistently hilarious actors in the show (And I think she was one of the ones that pushed Phoebe towards becoming nastier and angrier in the later episodes) but it is what it is. It's just one case of flanderisation that pops up as the show goes on.

I despise when they pit the friends against each other. Joey smiles immediately upon hearing this but what about poor Chandler. He spent most of the show being in Joey's shadow with women then only a couple of times does he actually prove himself as a romantic partner over Joey, like with Kathy, Monica (Joey always makes jokey passes at her) or the Dutch girl and this just throws that right out the window. It's a really spiteful joke to Chandler in my opinion and another instance of Phoebe running her mouth against their relationship, which she was just nonstop for. I mean, at the end, Phoebe doesn't even apologise and actually just runs a hypothetical by them of what Joey and Monica as a couple would have actually been like. I mean, what the hell? Like I said in my opening post, they really up the whole 'Phoebe thinks the world of Joey more than the rest of the group and defends him incessantly no matter what scenario' which you didn't really have before about Season 5 or 6.

@@areeanachowdhury9070 Spot on! My thoughts exactly. The worst part to me is, when you re-watch, from Seasons 1-3 Phoebe and Chandler were two of the closest friends. They worked together, they broke up with their partners together, she consoled him when Janice broke up with him. Loads of stuff! Then you get to Season 4 and it kind of disappears. Then by Seasons 5-6 you start to see them push Joey and Phoebe as two of the closest, quirkiest friends and forget about Chandler and Phoebe being particularly close (beyond the engagement ring and a few other things) and instead have Phoebe either go straight for Chandler with derisive comments or target Monica and Chandler despite them being by far, in my opinion, the healthiest, sweetest relationship. It's really odd! Yeah Chandler is, in my opinion, the example of the absolute best character development. In seasons 1-4 he's pretty irreverent, a bit self sabotaging/self deprecating in his humor, very, very frightened of commitment. But as the show goes on and you get to around Seasons 7-10 (maybe even a bit earlier?) the guy absolutely takes control as possibly the most mature, most caring and most responsible member of the group. As the friends begin to become caricatures of themselves, Chandler bizarrely goes the opposite way for the most part to me (not always, e.g. the interview with the jokes and stuff like that) and becomes extremely dependable, so it's odd that they write most of the characters to view him as someone who's not quite there in terms of being respected or funny or attractive. Is what it is but it's not great upon re-watch.
Pheobe was a sweet heart in the beginning. First season pheobe was my favourite, she was kind and funny. But in the later seasons her funny-ness became cruel. She always insulted Chandler, also she created so many rifts between Chandler and Monica. Her character never developed it went way down the hill. She would ship toxic love like Rachel and Ross 's but belitte Mondler everytime. She became so toxic. Chandler is the only guy who turned out to be good and best when it comes to relationship. He's the best boyfriend and husband in the tv history. As a fan of chandler and Mondler, I really hated her in later seasons.
Phoebe was annoying, bossy, self-absorbed and consistently stirred up trouble among the friends but people love her because she was kooky and had a difficult past. And we wonder what's wrong with the world.

Fair, she did like 6 big lies worthy of breaking up, I think Chandler is really only at fault for one relationship ending issue (when he kissed another girl and monica opened the presents.) and that one was admitted and forgiven. She goes to see Richard like 4 times in secret, which for me is a "bye bye Monica" moment.
Those weren't lies, they're secrets that would've just made Chandler insecure about their relationship. Monica was sparing him b/c those things were all superficial and didn't take away from how much she loved him. Phoebe as her best friend should've kept her mouth closed.

I've always wanted to know Lisa Kudrow's thoughts on the way Phoebe was changed. When you rewatch or binge watch the show, it's such a big and obvious change, a 180 almost (post triplets). Anyone know if the cast, creators or writers have ever been asked about it? Has noone dared ask because they are afraid of seeming critical? The cast was pretty powerful, so if I should guess, Lisa agreed to the change, sadly. I definitely didn't find Phoebe's sudden pettiness, meanness, and occasional self-pity funny.
I think towards the end of the series they exaggerated every characters flaws and made them less nuanced. Joey became overly stupid, Phoebe petty, Monica became too OTT, Chandler became too feminine and meek, Ross became too whiny and Rachel became to irritable
@@williamevans3327 Yeah but for the others, most of the times, they exaggerated traits they already had. They didn't outright change them, the way they did with Phoebe. The first seasons she was the opposite of petty and self-pitying. She was the generous hippie girl who was cleansing Ross's aura and just had a different take on things. I don't think he liked his birthday. Chandler's character arch is i believe that he got scarred by his family with some specific events. Thanksgiving, birthday and I think Christmas.
Well, there was an episode where they played a flashback for like 5 seconds of Chandler's birthday with stupid joey crying while saying "and now, Chandler" lol it was funny and stupid but, nonetheless, the closest thing we got to seeing an episode of it being Chandler's birthday!
Phoebe's disrespect towards Chandler was always unacceptable. And it's crazy how they kept her all thoses years in the friends group even when she clearly hated Chandler, Ross and always thought about herself in the first place. She only tolerated Joey because she was attracted to him

I often got the impression that Phoebe kind of hated Chandler. He was a normal kind of guy and she is the crazy woman used to go with weirdos. I think she also was very jealous of the normalcy of Monica and Chandler as a couple, something she never had portrayed to her by her parents growing up and something she never pursued herself, until Mike. In fact, by marrying Mike, the most Chandler-like sort of person she ever was with, she got what she actually craved and was jealous of - a normal, "vanilla" relationship like Monica's and Chandler's. And she is mean to Monica many times too, like the rest of the group, teasing her ways while also enjoying free food and hospitality in her apartment all the time. Phoebe is actually the most boring, artificial and often hypocritical of the friends, acting like she has so many principles and constantly acting against that whenever it suited her. She used the group of friends to appear like the quirky and eccentric "special" one because the rest of them were regular people with regular lives not trying to look anything different.
Why was Phoebe always against Monica and Chandler getting together which are the healthiest couple in the show but always pushed for Ross and Rachel to get together who in my opinion shouldn't have gotten back together at the end

Ok, Friends is an excelent TV Show but this video shows us how the writters were lazy at times. They just needed a device (Phoebe, the quirky person of the group) to create a temporary drama between Monica and Chandler that would be solved at the end of the episode, and they dit it at least 5 times. The one who suffers from this is, of course, Phoebe who becomes so nasty Season 6 onwards. I like Phoebe as much I like all the other five, but there are some lines that she delivers that are straight up just insulting and "that's what makes it funny" the writters thought back them, again a lazy and honestly horrible way to work on her character
Pheobe had the most glaring and radical change as a character. As others in the comment have said all the other friends changed but the they just their characteristics ratcheted up to 1000 but Pheobe drastically changed. She became selfish, petty and sometimes outright cruel. She went from being the kindest of the group to the meanest.
Chandler was always too good for Monica… he didn’t realize that because oh, well, she was a pretty lady into him. He has a lot of low self esteem, which kept him in place… but it’s not just that, he’s got morals, loyalty and just a one of a kind man. Can’t find another man like chandler, she’s not loyal, probably would have even cheated if she had the chance. I never could stand the woman in this show, or the guys expect for chandler.
Forgive the text or any poorly expressed speech, I'm from Brazil and I'm using Google Translate, I'm a huge fan of the series, a huge fan of Chandler. You know what's worse? TOTALLY free. It's not because Chandler treated her badly, it's not because Monica treated her badly. NOBODY treated her badly (maybe Ross sometimes, but more due to differences in belief and thought, but always maintaining respect). It seems like a need to want to be the center of attention in the most pathetic way a person is determined to do. There are two Phoebe's in the series, from Season 1 to a not very specific moment in Season 5; the really funny Phoebe, the one who really helps with positive advice, the one who is willing to do everything FOR THE GOOD of her friends, who didn't need to attract attention in a flashy way from others. And the other, A character who needed to humiliate, despise, who already forced himself to be "funny", who needed to pose challenges in a healthy relationship as we had this displeasure in seeing (not the video itself, but the moments in the series specifically) , and the most notable thing is that when she definitely started to be like this from Season 6 onwards, everyone looked at her after another "funny" moment of hers and thought "no, leave it alone, it's Phoebe, she has to have this moment ". How can a character regress like that? I don't know, I just think it was unnecessary because Phoebe was an excellent character in the first seasons. I appreciate Mike for having the patience and managing to pull off this pathetic return that was Phoebe for several Seasons, he revived that Phoebe from the beginning of the series, added to the maturity of the life that she SHOULD have had but preferred to waste time with nonsense. But what leaves me most amazed despite these moments, was that Chandler, Mônica, Joey, Rachel and Ross were ALWAYS there with her, never retorting or anything, like showing "you mistreated us several times, you didn't make the slightest effort to help us take away from bad or embarrassing moments, but we won't repay you with the same coin, because the moment you actually stop wasting time acting like a toxic idiot, we'll be there with you", like, honoring the main theme of the series.

I love Lisa and her great acting but the writers really did her a disservice having her be portrayed as that kind of "friend".
Finally a sensible fan. Phoebe was one of the worst but people always chose to see the kooky side of her that had a painful past. Phoebe is proof that having pain doesn't make you a good person.

She did not try to break Mondler. She was not sure thay this kind of healthy relationship van exist plus I feel she was also trying to check how strong would Chandler be - since he had commitment issues. She did create rift but this proved them to be stronger in their relationship than roschel, these incidents would have been enough for them to drift apart but not to Mondler. And she did try to mend things. She told Chandler jn Vegas to go back to Monica. Which means she was weird not mean, she did not understand it, but she supported it after realising tht they were meant to be

That's right! Thank you! And if she was jealous, than the way she acts just proves that Rachel, despite her flaws and occasional pettiness, is a better friend to Mondler. Even though she makes fun of Chandler sometimes, honestly they all kind of do at one point or another, which makes me sad, she remained supportive even though when the two got engaged, she said that she was jealous of them finding love. She did get jealous, but she did not lash out. Phoebe did it just because. You're absolutely correct about the way the writers portrayed her in the later seasons. Not so much funny anymore as just petty and cruel.

I’ve been saying for years that Phoebe was the WORST friend.
At the risk of getting killed by her fans, this is one of the reasons why I dislike Phoebe.
She basically has no filter or restrain : she just says or does whatever she wants to, not caring about the consequences and when there are consequences, she doesn’t even consider that she’s responsible or is like « whatever, I’ll just act like this isn’t my fault » and barely cares for those she might have offended. Sometimes, she could be really rude, disrespectful and insensitive towards others, even people she would call her friends.
I know she’s very popular but I really have a hard time seeing her as a good person : I often felt like people would overlook her flaws because she was goofy and had a sad past

@@superjackster0165there WAS a writer’s strike for awhile, if I remember correctly. That’s when the writing changed, and it was more forced comedy. Joey got child-like, phoebe got mean, and Monica got loud. I stopped watching for a couple of years bc it just wasn’t that funny anymore. But then later, when Rachel had her baby, the writing started getting good again.
Honestly this video kinda shows the flaws in Phoebe and Monica. Monica is a major hypocrite; she keeps so many secrets from Chandler, yet gets mad at him if he gets upset over it or keeps a secret from her. And Phoebe is just outright an ass to Chandler and some of the other friends besides Joey. I feel like Chandler and Rachel were the only good friends of the 6, but only if we exclude Rachel’s relationship with Ross where both of them were equally horrible to each other.

Phoebe turned awful around Season 5 lmao. Her and Chandler have such a uniquely great friendship in Season 3 where they often team up on subplots together. Then from about Season 6 they really, really push her and Joey as closer friends and have Phoebe start being extremely condescending, nasty and random, particularly towards Chandler and somewhat Ross. I'm up to the Vegas episode and Phoebe's at it already. It really is around Season 6 it becomes a little nonstop that she turns nasty and patronising, acting like she's the mainstay of the group despite actually being the one everyone knows could 'lift right out'.

She did meet a guy about as close to later seasons Chandler as you can get, in David. And she passed him up for Mike the wang? And that's not discounting Paul Rudd's unsurpassable charisma that allowed Mike to stay as long as he did but Mike as a character was no way on David's level and yet Phoebe has the audacity to act like she has any kind of say in what does or doesn't make a good relationship, what does or doesn't make a good man? Insanity!

That's not excusing Chandler of freaking out over less than nothing but Phoebe was the catalyst and began to do this constantly in between Monica and Chandler in the later seasons. It's a shame because Lisa Kudrow is actually hysterical, one of the most consistently hilarious actors in the show (And I think she was one of the ones that pushed Phoebe towards becoming nastier and angrier in the later episodes) but it is what it is. It's just one case of flanderisation that pops up as the show goes on.

I despise when they pit the friends against each other. Joey smiles immediately upon hearing this but what about poor Chandler. He spent most of the show being in Joey's shadow with women then only a couple of times does he actually prove himself as a romantic partner over Joey, like with Kathy, Monica (Joey always makes jokey passes at her) or the Dutch girl and this just throws that right out the window. It's a really spiteful joke to Chandler in my opinion and another instance of Phoebe running her mouth against their relationship, which she was just nonstop for. I mean, at the end, Phoebe doesn't even apologise and actually just runs a hypothetical by them of what Joey and Monica as a couple would have actually been like. I mean, what the hell? Like I said in my opening post, they really up the whole 'Phoebe thinks the world of Joey more than the rest of the group and defends him incessantly no matter what scenario' which you didn't really have before about Season 5 or 6.

@@areeanachowdhury9070 Spot on! My thoughts exactly. The worst part to me is, when you re-watch, from Seasons 1-3 Phoebe and Chandler were two of the closest friends. They worked together, they broke up with their partners together, she consoled him when Janice broke up with him. Loads of stuff! Then you get to Season 4 and it kind of disappears. Then by Seasons 5-6 you start to see them push Joey and Phoebe as two of the closest, quirkiest friends and forget about Chandler and Phoebe being particularly close (beyond the engagement ring and a few other things) and instead have Phoebe either go straight for Chandler with derisive comments or target Monica and Chandler despite them being by far, in my opinion, the healthiest, sweetest relationship. It's really odd! Yeah Chandler is, in my opinion, the example of the absolute best character development. In seasons 1-4 he's pretty irreverent, a bit self sabotaging/self deprecating in his humor, very, very frightened of commitment. But as the show goes on and you get to around Seasons 7-10 (maybe even a bit earlier?) the guy absolutely takes control as possibly the most mature, most caring and most responsible member of the group. As the friends begin to become caricatures of themselves, Chandler bizarrely goes the opposite way for the most part to me (not always, e.g. the interview with the jokes and stuff like that) and becomes extremely dependable, so it's odd that they write most of the characters to view him as someone who's not quite there in terms of being respected or funny or attractive. Is what it is but it's not great upon re-watch.
Pheobe was a sweet heart in the beginning. First season pheobe was my favourite, she was kind and funny. But in the later seasons her funny-ness became cruel. She always insulted Chandler, also she created so many rifts between Chandler and Monica. Her character never developed it went way down the hill. She would ship toxic love like Rachel and Ross 's but belitte Mondler everytime. She became so toxic. Chandler is the only guy who turned out to be good and best when it comes to relationship. He's the best boyfriend and husband in the tv history. As a fan of chandler and Mondler, I really hated her in later seasons.

The cast was pretty powerful, so if I should guess, Lisa agreed to the change, sadly. I definitely didn't find Phoebe's sudden pettiness, meanness, and occasional self-pity funny.
I think towards the end of the series they exaggerated every characters flaws and made them less nuanced. Joey became overly stupid, Phoebe petty, Monica became too OTT, Chandler became too feminine and meek, Ross became too whiny and Rachel became to irritable

The first seasons she was the opposite of petty and self-pitying. She was the generous hippie girl who was cleansing Ross's aura and just had a different take on things. Well, there was an episode where they played a flashback for like 5 seconds of Chandler's birthday with stupid joey crying while saying "and now, Chandler" lol it was funny and stupid but, nonetheless, the closest thing we got to seeing an episode of it being Chandler's birthday!

hey so firstly she simply didnt want to ruin her anniversary ..... cz she knew chandler wont like it .... she herself said that she'll tell chandler post anniversary. but naaah phoebe has to get in, do shit and then act oblivious . lastly i would never like a friend who breaks the girl code and sleeps with my ex(go watch that episode where rachel gets her first paycheck as a waitress)

I often got the impression that Phoebe kind of hated Chandler. He was a normal kind of guy and she is the crazy woman used to go with weirdos. I think she also was very jealous of the normalcy of Monica and Chandler as a couple, something she never had portrayed to her by her parents growing up and something she never pursued herself, until Mike. In fact, by marrying Mike, the most Chandler-like sort of person she ever was with, she got what she actually craved and was jealous of - a normal, "vanilla" relationship like Monica's and Chandler's. And she is mean to Monica many times too, like the rest of the group, teasing her ways while also enjoying free food and hospitality in her apartment all the time. Phoebe is actually the most boring, artificial and often hypocritical of the friends, acting like she has so many principles and constantly acting against that whenever it suited her. She used the group of friends to appear like the quirky and eccentric "special" one because the rest of them were regular people with regular lives not trying to look anything different.

Even if Phoebe was the one to tell those secrets, why aren't people questioning Monica's choices on those decisions??? She did things and knew Chandler wouldn't be alr wit it and still did it, like even if Phoebe could of ruined the relationship at least in a way she told him. The show was supposed to end after season 8 but the network kept renewing them so they had to find dumb storylines to keep it going.
Only number 2 feels really kind of mean-spirited. The rest just feels like Phoebe being scatterbrained and a bit too honest.
I always thought the perfect line for Chandler when Phoebe said I didn't know you were going to be here, and Chandler would say " We're always here" in his Chandler Bing anxious voice

Ok, Friends is an excelent TV Show but this video shows us how the writters were lazy at times. They just needed a device (Phoebe, the quirky person of the group) to create a temporary drama between Monica and Chandler that would be solved at the end of the episode, and they dit it at least 5 times. The one who suffers from this is, of course, Phoebe who becomes so nasty Season 6 onwards. I like Phoebe as much I like all the other five, but there are some lines that she delivers that are straight up just insulting and "that's what makes it funny" the writters thought back them, again a lazy and honestly horrible way to work on her character

Pheobe had the most glaring and radical change as a character. As others in the comment have said all the other friends changed but the they just their characteristics ratcheted up to 1000 but Pheobe drastically changed. She became selfish, petty and sometimes outright cruel. She went from being the kindest of the group to the meanest.
Chandler was always too good for Monica… he didn’t realize that because oh, well, she was a pretty lady into him. He has a lot of low self esteem, which kept him in place… but it’s not just that, he’s got morals, loyalty and just a one of a kind man. Can’t find another man like chandler, she’s not loyal, probably would have even cheated if she had the chance. I never could stand the woman in this show, or the guys expect for chandler.

And the other, A character who needed to humiliate, despise, who already forced himself to be "funny", who needed to pose challenges in a healthy relationship as we had this displeasure in seeing (not the video itself, but the moments in the series specifically) , and the most notable thing is that when she definitely started to be like this from Season 6 onwards, everyone looked at her after another "funny" moment of hers and thought "no, leave it alone, it's Phoebe, she has to have this moment ". How can a character regress like that? I don't know, I just think it was unnecessary because Phoebe was an excellent character in the first seasons. I appreciate Mike for having the patience and managing to pull off this pathetic return that was Phoebe for several Seasons, he revived that Phoebe from the beginning of the series, added to the maturity of the life that she SHOULD have had but preferred to waste time with nonsense. But what leaves me most amazed despite these moments, was that Chandler, Mônica, Joey, Rachel and Ross were ALWAYS there with her, never retorting or anything, like showing "you mistreated us several times, you didn't make the slightest effort to help us take away from bad or embarrassing moments, but we won't repay you with the same coin, because the moment you actually stop wasting time acting like a toxic idiot, we'll be there with you", like, honoring the main theme of the series.
