Well I can never get to sleep because I'm constantly thinking. Like I shut my eyes, lie there for 2 minutes and then my brain goes "I wonder why I never see baby pigeons?" Then I spend an hour researching and looking it up, then try to go back to sleep and KABAM "What does space smell like?" It's an endless cycle. Can anyone help?

You definitely need to take his advice on phone and computer screens. Download helpful apps like:
      *Apps*
F.lux --- for iphone, windows, mac, & linux
The Twilight app --- for android phones
Meditation also helps like geez said. It's not necessarily training "not to think" rather, to not get attached and just observe without taking action. Take slow deep breaths, it helps to count after each exhale (or inhale, just pick one and make sure to count). This distracts you from thinking.
Try binaural beats. It usually helps me stay focused/ fall asleep because at the end of the day it all boils down to FOCUS. If you focus on whatever comes to mind, you are taken along for a ride and won't get what you want done (sleep included).
      Conclusion:
      1. Decrease (stop if you can) blue light screen usage at night,; if you find that you have a hard time with that, download the above mentioned *apps* ..
      2. *Meditate* to control your reaction to thoughts... there's no way you can stop thinking it's impossible. Learn not to react or get attached to those thoughts and just observe and acknowledge that they're just thoughts.
      3. Try *binaural* *beats* and/or sounds of nature. Focus rules everything in your life, it goes back to meditation. You can choose either to focus on the thoughts that come up or ignore them and snap out of the cycle of endless thoughts. Focus on deep breathing instead.

Livia Omg same. Everytime I go to bed I think about everything. I can't stop thinking. It's either about the next day or what happened during today. Sometimes I listen to sleep music, but it keeps me up even more and I end up shutting it off. I wake up everyday this past week St different tines in the middle of the night. I'm getting sick of not being able to sleep. Wish me luck, I'm going to be right now. It's weird cause I was able to sleep before, literally anywhere. I was a good sleeper. Don't know what happened. I just can't stop thinking.

      Hi there,
Try sleeping with a window open and allow fresh air to circulate in your room freely as it induces sound sleep. It also gives a sense of happiness and well-being by altering brain levels of serotonin.
Create a reading/study schedule before bed (non-fiction) as your brain will get tired and thus will be inclined to rest/recover/sleep (the organ in control of others), i believe.
Avoid caffeinated products e.g coffee, green or black tea, chocolates, energy drinks and anything else containing the addictive and diuretic drug that will irritate and stimulate your brain, heart and nerves, and it may cause you to stay awake.
Take plenty of exercises (e.g brisk walking) so that you are tired at the end of the day.
Aim for a sleep early wake up early schedule and stick to it e.g sleep at 20:00 PM and wake up at 04:00 AM. 1 hour of sleep for recovery before midnight is better than 2 hours after; and it will program your body for recovery/sleep during those periods.
I noticed you turn the light off, however, making the room as dark as possible (e.g thicker curtains) helps block out blue light and help the body produce melatonin that helps you to get to sleep, i believe.
Avoid using the phone or devices 1 hour before bedtime if they produce blue light and do not have blue light filter or eye comfort shield.
      💙💙💙

These tips help with minor sleeping problems, not with insomnia. They are as helpful as telling someone who can't sleep to read book or drink non caffeinated tea before sleep. Don't sleep for full week and someone tells you to drink some tea. It's frustrating sometimes. What helps is different for everyone. Sometimes it's the things that people tell you to avoid, that don't cause it or drinking coffee before bed is the thing that relaxes you so that you can fall asleep. Sometimes taking a nap is the thing that calms your nerves after few sleepless nights that you can finally fall asleep. Sometimes it's not the sleeping pill that is needed, but anxiety medicine etc. Sometimes it's symptom of other problems that you need to treat. Sometimes you can't control how loud is your environment and can't control how comfortable is your earplugs, but you can mask the noise with radio. It's said that don't watch tv before sleep, but that might be the very thing that distracts your stressful thoughts and allows you to fall asleep. Try different things, all advice doesn't help. Sometimes need to arrange whole lifestyle to support your sleep. Some people can sleep no matter whats going on in their life.

Amen. I've been putting up with insomnia for years now. I remember going to my doctor to complain that the pills he'd prescribed were useless. He'd prescribed half a tablet per night. When I told him I was taking two tablets, to no effect, he went mental telling me that was enough to drop a horse.
And when people say "ah, insomnia - what you need is some lavender under your pillow, a potted plant in the bedroom and no artificial light in the hour before bedtime" I want to stab them.
'Sleep hygiene'? A phrase made up by people who haven't the faintest clue what they're talking about!!

This is a really good summarization of ways to overcome insomnia. The concept of stimulus control that is mentioned in the video is a very effective treatment for insomnia. I encourage anyone who is suffering from this condition to learn more about it. It will help. Managing caffeine, sugar, and alcohol intake are also very effective strategies for sleeping better.

Do you know what I _haaaaate...?_ When people wake me up for some reason when I've fallen asleep, and it's only been an hour or two since I was awake last.
I don't care about food, or if you want to know if I know where the scissors are, or if you're telling me that we have plans tomorrow, I'm going to have to be awake for another 10 hours _minimum_ to get sleepy enough to get back to sleep. What the hell am I supposed to do for the next 10 hours to burn enough energy for my body to surrender to sleep?
Then they want to bitch at me, because when tomorrow actually rolls around, I haven't slept since the night before and I stumble around exhausted for the rest of the day. Or decide I'm not going out with them, because I'm _finally_ tired enough to sleep, and to an insomniac that is one of the best things to do with my time (much to their confused irritation).

Being a high schooler with a lack of sleep does damage to how I go about my day and I really wish it was something I could talk more about. Being stuck in a never ending cycle makes you feel trapped. I’m hoping one day I break these habits and get a peaceful sleep. If you’re reading this and struggle as well i wish you all the best in your journey to find peace because you deserve it.

It may also help if you can’t sleep with in 20 to 25 mins to get up and do something relaxing like reading or meditating, or listening to music. Then try to sleep once you feel tired

I haven’t been diagnosed by a doctor, but I do have many symptoms. During my 8th grade year I’ve been forgetting things, at first I thought it was fine until it finally started to show in my grades.
I woke up at 7:00 every day to go to school, but now I was sleeping around 4:00 and waking up at odd hours like 5:00 or exactly at 6:59, right before my alarm clock rings. I already finished middle school but now it’s in the summer.
Usually when it’s summer, I sleep great almost everyday, but this time I’m going to sleep at odd hours and recently I have been missing days of sleep. If I didn’t sleep that night I would usually carry on with the day and mope around, though I tried to do many activities because summers almost over.
But since I’m not going to high school on campus I’m going online, my schedule will mess up because I’ll forget everything and fail. And the other thing I do is over think, which is what I’m doing right now.
I always get distracted by my thoughts and it really annoys me. I hope who ever reads this has any good tips, cause if you do, reply back in the morning because it is 4 in the morning for me and I’m going to force myself to sleep.
Thanks for reading my problems! Have a nice day.🙂

Ngl I struggle with the same. Something that might help is having a sleep schedule and just keep following it. Also try to relax your body and think of something you like. If you don’t get sleep around 20 or 25 mins go and do something relaxing till you feel ready to sleep and good luck

Depression and paranoia (fromthedark, i see lots of things when im trying to sleep) hurts my sleep significantly, i have not slept more than 7-8 hours in years. I am so tired and nothing helps me.
I only can take one hour naps everyday, and in night, i usually can only sleep 20 minutes or 3 hours or not at all depending on how depression affected me on that day.

i’ve been having mad trouble sleeping for about 2-3 weeks now. just lying in bed for
about an hour with no progress in successful sleep. i’m just trying to find some kind of comfortable sleeping position, trying to steady my breathing without focusing too much on it, trying to clear my mind and not stress about tomorrow, etc. right now i’ve been lying in bed for 40 mins, constantly moving around and getting mad at myself for staying awake. just watching this video made me feel very relaxed so i just wanna say thanks. i’ll give these methods a shot, although i wanna avoid medication if possible, and hope that it works. honestly, i’m not even sure if i have insomnia. i seem to have trouble sleeping for about 1-2 months and then suddenly i can sleep fine for a bit and then the sleep trouble comes back. what really struck me in this video was the “don’t force yourself to sleep.” that method really never occurred to me and honestly think it would really help. i guess i never would’ve thought about it because right away i would’ve just thought it’d do more good than bad because i’d just be up for longer but it’d totally help in the long-term. but, yeah, thanks again, this video really helped :)

For the last 2 years, I’ve been struggling with falling asleep, and staying asleep. I wake up every 1-2 hours or at least 3-4 times during the night. I make sure my room is dark, I’m comfy, have my phone off and don’t go on it before bed, and I avoid drinking coffee past 3-4 pm. I’ve also bought a fan to use to help me focus on the noise of the fan (instead of the other loud racquet like walking and talking in my house that I cannot control). I have improved my issue with falling asleep.. although the odd nights I struggle. However, I can’t seem to tackle my issue with not waking up during the night so many times, every 1-2 hours. I always have racing thoughts before bed, and I can’t seem to fully relax my mind. I’m always thinking about so many things no matter what, and at night, it’s always worse. I also wake up every morning feeling tired, groggy and irritable. It takes me 3-5 hours to fully feel myself and “wake up”.

I suffer from the strange case of being able to sleep for an hour at most and then waking up. So, I subsequently wake each hour of the night. The strange thing for me is that I never feel tired during the day; I often feel extremely energized and upon the early early morning hours I feel as if I have a "caffeine-like" boost of energy that lasts until the midday. This makes me completely unable to lie in bed so I must get up and do something in attempt to fatigue myself throughout the day in order to generate a crash by the end of night. Unfortunately, I then fall victim to circumstances previously mentioned. I don't feel negatively effected by this but I must say that it is very frustrating having suffered for the past (say 3-4) years of my young life. Suffering and frustrated in the way that I cannot maintain a good deep sleep. I fear a looming psychological degeneration of some sort, I see no symptoms as of yet BUT I am aware the brain does require R.E.M. sleep. Please anyone help talk me through something that may aid my efforts. Last note, I do in fact get lucky at times and get a good 4 hours of non-stop sleep at the beginning of the night. Although this is rare I believe it is the key to me being able to stay somewhat stable. The four hours is followed by waking every hour again while my girlfriend sleeps next to me peacefully uninterrupted.

Yall ever try to go to bed early like 9 or 10 but you just lay there and everytime you close your eyes you just like feel stressed so you open them again but you just get bored laying there so you get on your phone and time passes and before you know it it's already 3am of the next day and so you shut your phone off thinking you're probably gonna be tired but you're not so you get on your phone again and before you know it you already see the sun rising cause it's 5 or 6 in the morning so you think to yourself "I definitely gotta go to sleep now," so you close your eyes but still can't go to sleep but you remember that you can will your mind to go to sleep by not moving your body for 15 minutes and so you do that and you end up falling asleep through some struggle but before you know it you're being woken up at 10 or 11 and you get up expecting to feel tired and you are but you have enough energy to move around so throughout the day you think you should take a nap but you don't because you realise you're not sleepy even tho you got little sleep and it keeps happening every night and day and before you know it all your days are jumbled up and you don't know whether it's Tuesday or Wednesday but you still go with it and you're expecting major eye bags but everytime you look in the mirror there is none cause me too

For me, I usually get about 3-4 hours of sleep each night, but I think 13 year olds should get more than that. My main problem is having to much energy to fall asleep, causing me to go to sleep around 4-5 in the morning. I’ve learned to go through my day with little to no sleep.
Like, I have all this energy, and since I can’t get up and do stuff since that would wake up my parents and our neighbors (we live in an apartment)
I usually go on my phone since there’s nothing better to do. I’ve tried things like exercising before bed and such, but it just doesn’t help!

I’ve been taking prescribed melatonin medication since a really young age and I still do now and I’m 18. Melatonin is great for short term but don’t take it for longer than 4 months maximum. Because I feel like I’m very dependent on them now and get agitated when I haven’t took them in about 48 hours.

Suffering from insomnia for over 20 years. I haven’t slept all night and I’m up now at 4am.
It’s the toxic environment, bad jobs, bad memories, poor relationships, and nothing good to look forward to that may be contributed to insomnia.
Whenever I’m on a real vacation, a nice hotel, away from toxicity, no job to worry about, something good to look forward to, no worries is when my insomnia is less.
It’s the toxic thoughts and environment that causes insomnia.

Trazadone worked for two years to help me fall asleep, but after that, I turned to alcohol it takes forever to make me feel tired enough to get to sleep. I fall asleep around 5 AM and I wake around three or 4 PM the next day. My doctor does not prescribe medication’s for this, I have to go to sleep clinic so hopefully they may find an answer although they usually look for apnoea sleep apnea. I probably won’t fall asleep in the clinic at all but the wires are attached so maybe they can find something otherwise, I use a joke, a big hammer hitting my head to cause me to sleep instant. Otherwise it takes forever..

I had terrible insomnia in 2001, and discovered by accident, it was something in my stick antiperspirant. I ran out, used an old stick of deodorant instead for awhile, and the insomnia went away. Another time I had developed insomnia, I flipped the mattress over and used the 'fresh' side for awhile, and guess what, the insomnia went away. Later I came across an article about how Sudden Infant Death Syndrome did not start until Congress in 1947 passed a law requiring baby crib mattresses to be fire retardant. The fire retardant chemicals break down over time, by bacterial and/or fungal action, and release toxic gases, which can kill babies. I reasoned if they can kill babies by depressing their central nervous system they can probably cause insomnia in adults. And I swear, some damn pillows contain something which can cause insomnia. I've had a few which I ended up throwing out after making the connection. I've at times gone to using a rolled up cotton blanket for a pillow, not being able to find a decent brand that doesn't cause me insomnia.

I was on school break and I slept later than usual and started having the habit of sleeping all day and staying awake all night like a owl then I tried sleep medication so I could go to sleep regularly and it was interrupted and I dont wanna have that day to day basis on sleeping pills cuz it doesnt sound healthy so I tried to take day nap early in the morning I thought maybe I would be sleepy again at night that didnt work so I slept for a few hours in the day and tried to stay sleep longer to get into that hour zone to sleep regularly (I dont know why I even thought that one would work) and I tried to stay up for a whole day (day and night) and wait till the next night to get rest and I fell asleep in the day and failed at my plan and its an endless circle and the only time I can sleep is in the day like a vampire or owl geez if u have any suggestions on what to do, feel free to leave a comment. It stopped working tho early this year so I went back to the doctors explaining everything and guess what he just prescribed the same medicine again and another one. 3 weeks later that has also stopped working and I'm getting no sleep and the doctors doesn't help me. I'm falling asleep on all lessons in school, can't fall asleep in the night which usually makes me go to bed as late as possible, sometimes at 6 in the morning. I also wake up constantly during the night and get no sleep. It's so frustrating, I feel like iv'e tried everything...
