Here in Iceland, even with our electric and geothermal heating, I am planning to get a kerosene heater. Iceland is suffering from electricity shortages, and we are barely getting by without having to ration. Some towns of Iceland have actually started burning diesel again to make electricity, to be able to hear homes. So if things really get bad, no electricity, no hot water. Then only burning something in the home will keep homes warm. Fireplaces are very uncommon here. And the government wants to start exporting electricity to Britain...... Which will rise prices here, and we don't have electricity to spare.

I'm glad we have a fireplace here. Two different winters in the last 4 years, the furnace died. The fireplace isn't big enough to heat the whole house, but the living room and bathroom were nice and toasty, til the furnace got fixed. We just slept in the living room.
With a wood stove/gassifier you can heat a house, heat water, while producing bio diesel, and using the unburned wood gas to power a generator. You can also heat up water by placing copper tubing in compost. The breakdown of the compost generates a LOT of thermal energy.
You can also make a solar air heater / hot water heater that can help heat the house and heat your water, most of the year, and on sunny winter days.

I remember as a kid, I'm 65 now, growing up in rural Texas. My grandmother would turn our heaters off at night, and of course cover us up in quilts and blankets, then get up around 5am and turn on our dearborn heaters to heat the house up to around 50 degrees. It was because we couldn't afford a lot of Butane, so we dressed in warm clothes just to be in the house. I swear, some today would die if they went through even a little hardship like that.

From Texas also. I remember the Dearborn heaters with great fondness. That heater was in the living room which also included the dining room. We rarely used it in wintertime mostly at Christmas or when relatives came. We only heated the kitchen/front room and the bathroom, as needed. This was with open-faced butane stoves. Still the best heat I believe. We were farmers and used butane powered tractors so we had 500 gallon service tanks. We were never cold, but we didn't heat bedrooms at all. And never ran stoves at night unless it was 0°F or below. Butane is wonderful heat as it gets much hotter than natural gas and doesn't produce nearly as much CO or CO2. I used to get a headache when I visited in town where most people had NG.

Not sure what kind of building or area you live in but this might help. My parents lived in a small rural town with bad winters. They had well water and didn't have a good heating system. The first winter their water lines froze. After that they had a ritual; every autumn they would show up at a local farmers land and shovel the manure from the barn for a small fee and bring it home. They would put a pile of it over the well head and then mound it over the top of the water pipe all the way to the house and against the wall where the pipe entered. Then they would cover it in plastic sheet weigh it down with stones and bricks. During the winter the pile would generate heat from breaking down. When spring arrived there was compost ready for the garden.

I live in Minnesota so it obviously gets bitterly cold here. This may sound like a strange suggestion, but to save on gas usage (especially during the night) I would suggest hanging some additional blankets over your windows and doors. I actually installed some hooks over each of the doors and windows in my house for this purpose. I would turn on the heat for 30 minutes before bed and then turn it off. The blankets over the doors and windows really will keep a lot of the residual heat in the house (assuming your walls have good insulation). Almost all heat loss occurs through the windows and doors in a home due to a lower insulation factor. Also, if you have a chimney or any vent systems it would be advisable to close those during the night.

I've been telling my family for some time now that this is a distinct possibility but here in Cleveland, OH, they are used to having all the modern conveniences at their fingertips and have not had to endure any significant shortage of basic necessities. When I lived in rural southern West Virginia, there were times when I had to heat selected rooms of my home with a heater I crafted from a couple of flower pots and several tea light candles. When it got too cold to rely on that small heater, I had kerosene heaters to fall back on, but I'm paying the price for years of breathing kerosene fumes now.

That reminds me, it's possible to craft an HHO combustion plant if you're willing and able to work with high voltage. You can use electrolysis to break water into hydrogen and oxygen by adding baking soda to the water. I wanna use that in a diy power plant system, but you could also use it just to burn a little hydrogen flame like a pilot light. Hydrogen combustion is WAYYY hotter than any regular gas for heaters or engines. You can set it up to control the oxygen/hydrogen ratio too. More oxygen makes the combustion more powerful pressure wise, and more hydrogen gives a hotter burn. Your mention of breathing kerosene fumes reminded me of that because HHO just recombines as steam after combustion and only creates nitrogen oxide as a byproduct. Fossil fuel creates that AND CO2. I'm pretty sure burning HHO actually improves air quality cuz it also humidifies the air and condensates around areal contaminates causing them to drop outa the air.

Regardless of who made the decisions that led Europe dependent on natural gas from Russia, the situation is what it is. It seems like this winter is not going to be easy. It's good that your politicians are at least talking about measures that might need to be taken - that is good to hear. Should the US be in a similar situation, it would be political suicide to ask people to use less.
As someone who has had the thermostat set at 62 F (16.5 C) for years (and lives in a place where it remains below freezing for weeks during the winter) I can say that it's quite comfortable after the body adjusts. We raised our children with no issues. For some people that temp will be too low and that's understandable. I guess it's a case of each doing what they can to conserve and prepare, and hope for the best.
After heating oil tripled in cost back in 2007 we installed a wood stove and that really helps reduce costs (especially if you can harvest your own wood). It's got us through several ice-storms where the power was knocked out for days. One or two medium fires a day will keep the furnace from kicking on and at night we have the thermostats set 57 F downstairs, leaving enough time to fire the stove back up first thing in the morning so it does the work of warming the downstairs back to a comfortable temp. During the day, the upstairs thermostat lets it cool to 60, since we're not up there. We're very lucky that we had the resources to set all this up, and I understand that not everyone can easily access cheap wood for heating, or handle the physical work required.

Lilly. Something to consider is if you use a boiler system the fluid in that system and rads can freeze and burst. It can destroy a house. It can take less than one day below freezing to damage the system. Consider having installed an anti freeze solution into your boiler system. A wood stove may not heat all areas there is water that can freeze. We went through the energy crisis back in the 1980s. I have seen first hand what can happen to a house if it freezes. It was not fun. Keep jugs of frozen water in your freezer. It will help keep the food cold longer in a power failure. I have set up my boiler with a plug for power. This way I can plug it into my solar battery inverter direct or a portable power source during interruptions.

If we're going green, wouldn't those loads be going non-stop? What the heck is happening?

In order to save money on my expensive natural gas bill (I"m in the US), I keep my thermostat at 65 F (18.3 C) degrees during very cold weather, and 63 F (17.2 C) degrees when it's not crazy cold outside but heat is still necessary. It is uncomfortable, but I have a very limited income. I have in the past kept it warmer, like when I was taking care of my father, and when I had cats who were old and frail. I also provided them with heated cat beds. I will do anything for my cats. We've been warned that our natural gas bills for heating will rise. Our water bills have already risen. We were warned that our electric bills will increase, because, allegedly, natural gas is used to produce it. The electric companies have installed solar panels on our telephone poles, but have not reduced our bills. In many jurisdictions, we are not permitted to put solar panels on our roofs unless they are tied to the grid, which means the electric company gets benefited by our own solar panels, and we still have to pay our electric bill that is only reduced by a little bit. Many jurisdictions have restrictions on alternative heating methods for homes. Like you, I am very concerned!

I just spent my first winter in the highlands. The average temperature in my flat for about 4 months was 11 degrees. I would "treat" myself by turning the heating on once per day (mainly to make sure pipes didnt freeze, and to keep the building healthy). I also opened two windows twice a day for a few hours because its quite damp up here.
I am not going to lie. It was not pleasant. I had to make some serious changes to my routine and the clothes I wore around the house. In fact I got a large woollen blanket for when I was working at my desk. BUT you get used to it. Seriously, you get used to it.
Its a very modern concept to heat your home to 21c permanently. Even within my lifetime I have seen this become normal. In winter its cold, in summer its hot. Until about 30 years ago you accepted that you would have to wear jumpers indoors to stay warm in winter. That time has come again.

Yeah people are used to wear summer clothes in winter in their homes... this is wrong... for the past winters I had 15-16°C in my flat, didn't heated at all during winters and it was just fine, I was just wearing more clothes and still felt pretty comfy. Sleeping at 15°C with a warm duvet is probably the time of the year when I sleep the better....
For me it feels weird that people gets triggered just because they are remembered the very basic idea that heating too much in winter/using too much A/C in summer/driving your car too much is wasting energy... the reality is that people on their own have also a small part of the key that would make the whole energy dependency problem easier....

I have thermometers in every room (not joking, I wanted to monitor the situation) so I got to watch very closely how I was doing in different temps. Down to around 14-15 degrees Its comfortable enough, even if I might wear warmer clothes. South of that things start to change. At 11c I have to keep my body VERY warm or I start to notice slight loss of dexterity in my hands when Im typing. I think at this temperature my body actually starts drawing heat into the core to conserve it, and thats no good if Im working at my PC and need to type a lot.
I never thought I would see the day, but I actually got one of those USB powered warming vests after I watched a Prepper Princess video about it. I could barely bring myself to buy it, but it was worth every penny. We've known about this problem for years in advance, but those in power failed to work to avoid the problem. They had other ideas that were not taking reality into account. It's sad that here in the U.S. we have so much natural gas that we literally have to burn it out in the open to get rid of it because it's basically a waste product of oil production. The U.S. is not the world's #1 oil producer and that means a lot of natural gas is produced as well.

This is why I'm so strongly in favor of energy independence in the US. I don't care, left, right, up, down, whatever. Depending on foreign nations for something every single individual in this country needs is not wise. This is not something most people can do on an individual level, or even on a city level. Rebuilding the energy infrastructure requires an investment in the billions of dollars. As we've also seen in Texas, relying on private, for-profit energy companies can also lead to disastrous consequences for individuals. No $13,000 power bill for 2 days of power during a blizzard, thank you very much.
