  • Different people have different philosophys about trimming a parrot speak. Some feel that they should be the natural link they are, others see that they get too long. In this video I’ll show you a few beaks and show you who I’m considering trimming!

    I use a callus rasp (an old Dr. Scholls) to carefully trim the point of my Caiques beak. He's a Blast to play with, but usually gets a bit too aggressive while wrestling with my hands. With age, my hands skin has become somewhat delicate, so recently I've actually started to wear leather work gloves to play with him........ He loves leather,,,, especially shoes. I don't have a pair that haven't been damaged from his chewing........ Occasionally, I'll peel away a layer of old beak material if it gets food or soiled under it........ Also. After a beak trimming session with the callus rasp, I allow him his vengeance by letting him attack and maul the handle of the rasp. TOO FUNNY!..... And yes, once in a while he does bite, viciously, but this guy is such a Blast,,, just the way he is.

    I have a Cape Parrot. When I look at pictures of them in the wild, their beaks are quite long. For this reason I don’t get it trimmed often.

    I have a mustache parakeet and his beak gets so overgrown that he can’t eat proper. I took him to the vet to get it trimmed for a long time until I decided my husband and I could try doing it. Needless to say Sammy gets quite cranky but he gets over it.

      Good for you- it’s easier to be able to trim at home anytime you need to. It allows us to do it and do more later, if needed.

    My orange-winged Amazon DOESN'T like cuttlebones and neither does he chew on his Wooden or Pedi-perches. I've tried him with a few different cuttlebones and he doesn't even touch any of them! His cage and Play Gym always have one and although he doesn't touch them, I still change them every few months; I'm hoping that one day he might start biting on one.
    I bought him when he was only three months old at PJ Pets store (he's now 15 years old); they were feeding him Harrison's pellets and I continued; I also began giving him mixed vegetables and fruits. He gets seeds and Peanuts with shells but ONLY as a snack.
    Although he grew up eating healthy, once a year I HAVE to take him to the Vet to get his beak and nails trimmed.

      Sounds like he's doing great! I'm guessing that he'll start to paly with his toys more as he gets older- how old is he?

      Oh yes, he plays with his toys but doesn't (bite) them and neither does he bite his cuttlebone so his beak does not wear down; he'll be 16 years old on June 30th.

    I only trim if their beak impedes their eating. I have put pure coconut on my birds feet. I only did it because he was picking at his feet, they looked really dry (I know that sounds silly) and he seemed to like it. I let him taste some too. It is refined coconut.

      I agree- if it’s needed I do too. Otherwise, I let them be.

    I can tell when my Caiques needs a beak trim. I haven’t attempted to do it myself. I will do dog and cat nails and claws but I lack the courage to mess with my birds. I take them to a bird store where they have a lovely avian vet tech who works 3 days a week for them. She does bird grooming as a service, no charge. She knows exactly what she’s and she’s very gentle. I do know some people will use an emery board. I’m very fearful of hurting or excessively stressing my birds.

      @ParrotBliss  Před 2 lety +2

      Hmmmm…. You’re giving me an idea- I think it’s less stressful not going out for the grooming- though they probably do a better job than I do- Video on how to trim maybe 🤔

    • @1hawaii21
      @1hawaii21 Před 2 lety +2

      I must say the birds I’ve taken seemed to do well. She gives them little treats and is soft spoken and very gentle. But, yes, I agree it would be better to be groomed at home. I think a grooming video would be a terrific idea. Maybe one video on beak care and one for nails and feet.

      Did you see the video on how to file a beak down safely?

  • @ks4893-m8v
    @ks4893-m8v Před rokem +1

    We've avoided beak trims because it can be a problem if it's trimmed unevenly.
    I put coconut oil on our pionus's feet after his baths sometimes and occasionally on his naires (carefully with just a tiny bit). We live where the air's dry - especially in winter.
    Henry is beautiful! Is he a blue fronted Amazon? He beak does look really honkin big, though. How did the beak trim go?

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  Před rokem

      Henry is a Mealy Amazon, the largest. I would guess that dry weather would be hard on a parrot, probably a good thing you put coconut oil on them. Do you put it on their beaks too?
      Trim went well. I'll try to post a pic on discord-

    Best way to bond with your parrot is to rescue and not buy from breeders. Birds are meant to fly.

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  Před 2 lety

      I have done rescue and gotten babies. Not everyone can rescue any parrot. I think what’s best is the right bird- regardless of where they are from- with the right person so that there’s a special bond that requires no more renominates of any kind. That’s what I aim to help people do/have.
