I don't think its as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. I never use coffee mugs, preferring my coffee with copious milk cold in a mason jar. However, for someone who uses a coffee mug everyday or multiple times a day and needs their coffee hot, I think it's probably well worth it.

I have this mug and it’s not designed to heat your coffee up. Most coffee after it’s brewed is at around 150° and it cools down to your temp in the mug.
Heating up the liquid would definitely reduce the battery life since it’s working so hard to heat the coffee up.
Also, the paint chipping complaint was about the previous model. Same with battery complaint. (I did crazy research when I bought mine.
From a coffee snob perspective, it taste better over time than other ways of heating as well.

I agree on the price but I splurge money on “gadgets” anyhow 😉 As I like to drink tea in the morning at 50C (122F), the Ember is perfect as it is a warmer which you explained very well. So the Ember tells me when my tea has cooled enough (which is very important to me) as I don’t like piping hot tea. I do like a hot espresso or two after my tea so the Ember isn’t really of benefit there. Something that avoids me getting my tongue burned, is also a huge pro. Your review could have shown more of the app features such as the different presets you can use for different drinks and the tea timer or the tracking of caffeine consumption. (might be Apple Health feature, not sure about other phones) Also, the mugs aren't really meant to heat from lower temperatures. *shrug* Anyway, you are one of my favorite reviewers and your review is better than others I've seen who automatically dismiss it because of the price to treat it as a joke product.

This keeps it at a specific temperature, some people prefer very specific temperature ranges for their coffee. It also doesn't require a lid to maintain the temperature (not that that means much).
It'll also slowly heat up colder coffee without destroying as much of the flavor as a microwave would. With that said, the app stinks and it's hit or miss if it'll actually connect to the mug without having to reset it every time

@@NickCombs hypothetically, yes. But your insulated mug isn't perfect, it loses heat constantly. On top of that, if you put freshly brewed coffee in something well insulated, it could be close to an hour before it's at a comfortable drinking temperature, once it finally is, it's a race against the clock before it falls out of the optimal range, and once it does, you'd have to dump it into a microwaveable cup, reheat and start the process over. Of course that's really only an issue if you're serious about your coffee.
I like knowing it's at my set temperature, and is going to stay there. But then again, if you are really really really into coffee, you enjoy the flavor changes as it cools to experience all your coffee has to offer. And if you let it sit in the ember mug with only a little left, it starts to get the gross burnt flavor eventually. But I shut it off or turn the temp down if I don't finish it off.

As a three year owner of several Embers I think there is a learning curve with the Ember. The newest one I bought several months ago at Costco for $99. Worth every penny in my opinion. As for how long the battery lasts I don't know. I spend about a hour every morning drinking coffee and it retains the heat to my preset temp of 138F for the entire time. I set the cup back on the charger and it takes about an hour to charge it back to 100%. I have had a few problems but were quickly and professionally take care of by Embers Customer Service. It's not perfect but to function as stated as long as I have owned the mugs it's nothing short of a miracle considering the electronics and the engineering that went into the design.

Some people like their coffe at a specific consistent temp. The app exists to keep that temp
Its really as simple as that. Its an expensive product sure, but it does exactly what it says on the tin.
If you don't want that its useless to you. If you do want that, its not

I've been using a 20oz insulated Buba travel mug for my coffee for almost 10 years. The foam insulation keeps my coffee piping hot for over an hour. I have several vacuum insulated tumblers that keep coffee hot even longer. I never bothered to switch mugs. I only use the vacuum insulated ones to keep cold drinks cold. You should compare the results of this mug to the Rocky Mountain tumbler you reviewed a few years ago. I bet Rocky Mountain keeps the coffee hotter longer.

Because I like my coffee at room temperature, the battery in my pottery mug lasts for ages. In fact, I don't think I've ever had to recharge it.
I would consider changing to Ember though if that can achieve the same results, because I like the color and the name. I can say 'Where's my Ember?' instead of 'Where's my mug?' My cats would probably find that funny and/or confusing.
