Human Healing Unlocked: transforming suffering into wellbeing | David Reilly | TEDxFindhornSalon

  • From germinating 30,000 year old seeds to the effects of Type II diabetes on the National Health Service, Dr David Reilly MD's fast paced talk on how to unlock the potential of human healing is both fascinating and touching. Using the example of one of his patients, and with a moving twist at the end, David interprets 40 years of academic research into an amazing story.
David Reilly trained as a physician and a GP and evaluated aspects of complementary medicine and mind-body medicine. He approaches medicine and human caring in ways that emphasise the innate healing capacity in people, the factors that modify the healing response, and their interaction in the therapeutic encounter and relationship - ideas adopted as the core of The Fifth Wave document exploring future health in Scotland.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Your comparison of the darkness people perceive inside themselves with the conditions surrounding a resting seed, as well as your invocation of other natural imagery, reminded me very much of the following poem by Louise Glück, called The Wild Iris. I've included it here, with the hope that you, and anyone who reads this post, may find it somehow useful and interesting:
At the end of my suffering
    there was a door.
Hear me out: that which you call death
    I remember.
Overhead, noises, branches of the pine shifting.
    Then nothing. The weak sun
    flickered over the dry surface.
    It is terrible to survive
    as consciousness
    buried in the dark earth.
Then it was over: that which you fear, being
    a soul and unable
to speak, ending abruptly, the stiff earth
bending a little. And what I took to be
    birds darting in low shrubs.
    You who do not remember
    passage from the other world
I tell you I could speak again: whatever
    returns from oblivion returns
    to find a voice:
from the center of my life came
    a great fountain, deep blue
    shadows on azure seawater.
    -- Louise Glück

In dealing with loss, of love, of most anything, look back at what you did. You had fun, life was hoot, you shared your passion and it was rewarded. Imagine all the high points. That is you. It is still in there. You were great. Get back there. Life changes, realize that many times it is for the best, you just can't see it right now.

Balahura Adrian thank you, you've also put a smile on my face. I, too, find the ppl closest to me seem the furthest. I have found, the more I live in an authentic state of Love, the less I resonate with those closest to me. When we raise our vibration and look at life differently thru the lens of Love and possibility and truly Honor our Divinity, Life has a way of weeding out (per se) those that vibrate on a different frequency. And as much as our physical self or ego tells us that's a bad thing, we must resist the urge of that way of thinking or feeling. I, too, struggle with that on the daily. But, to create the life of our dreams, we must change our beliefs that created our present day life. We must know in our hearts we create our reality and if we created what is currently displeasing in our life or health, then WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHANGE IT AND CREATE EVERYTHING WE SEEK. It starts right here, this very moment because all we ever have is this very moment, now. All the Love, strength, healing and limitless potential to every beautiful soul this reaches 💜🙏💜 Infinite blessings xx

What is going on in our society that we fail to care about our own well being ? Actually we are often actively self destructive ! I hold the view that implicit messages are conveyed to us about our worth or lack of it, that are even more powerful than explicit ones - That culminatively impact on our physical as well as our emotional well being. Being ignored over long period as destructive as being overtly attacked on occasion. We are social animal. We cannot thrive in isolation. And many of us are in reality isolated. Surrounded perhaps by busy humanity, yet isolated ! We did not evolve for the kind of lives we lead. We evolved to be in closely knit small attached groups. We live dashing from one task to another with little time or energy to relax, to ‘be’ with ourselves or others. Then we binge. Whether on T.V or booze or cakes. Our communities , our schools do not foster healthy self care. Most never think on this at all. Most accept how things are. I am smiling wondering if lots of insight is gained from these sites, talks, footage ? hope so !

I worry that capitalism is the cause of the non-self-care. Instead of being one community supporting one another, we are all rivals for a piece of prosperity that we want to be bigger and more impressive to view than the one that our neighbours have. Consumerism sucks us in. We prefer income to time spent with children. The children grow up alone, with an intolerant "popularity" peer pressure at school and the need to do homework and extra-curricular achievements to get into a GOOD college and a job to pay their teenaged expenses and maybe save towards college. The harsh labour conditions i.e. long and unsociable working hours, not much paid holiday (vacation) are bad for family life and a work/life balance. The industrial scale of farming is bad for animals and human health.
The only hope is the families who make their own values and also if you look at more "traditional" societies e.g. Spain, North Africa and elsewhere, they have a laid back attitude to life, close families and communities. Most women are housewives and the family supports its children and brings them up in an extended family group. and doesn't do things like throw them out at the age of 18. They have good self-esteem and resilience in the face of bereavement inefficient infrastructure and what we call hard times e.g. unemployment, because they will not be homeless and they do not blame themselves for misfortune or even mistakes. We do that, because our western culture tells us we are reponsible for our life and are defective if we do not sucessfully compete and achieve financial and career success.

Divide and conquer is the theory that the elites have been running. The more individualist the society becomes the more depressed or blind we become, Either by comparing our selves to the success of people who have material wealth and being depressed, having material wealth but no real social connection which inherently makes us depressed, or chasing material success for the soul reason believing that its going to cure our suffering. We need this fake media, advertisements, social media to stop giving us false information on what is true to genuine human happiness.

If only there were more of this man. I am so sick of medication with side effects that doesn't work and a shrug... No conversation about anything else. No meds left to try? Let's do surgery... No discussion on options. No communication. In Ireland we are forced to register with a gp in the area. So you have a 'family gp' who doesn't care about your personal circumstances and looks on the Internet for meds to match your symptoms! Alternative health care is only for the affluent.

It appears to me that we have been duped into believing that we have no control over what happens to our health, and that doctors know best. However the medical profession has been unduly influenced by those who make medication for profit.

Soon as i was diagnosed with prediabetes i went paleoketo
Why? It was shown on some documentry over 15yrs ago that diet can reverse/reduce diabetes.
Ancestral health channel, sarah myhill, but my 1st real push came from a TED talk about a lady doc who reversed her ms (similar to me/cfs).
Put this way, i lapsed this yr n symptoms n prediabetes came back. I started diet last week of nov n last 8 days iv been able to go from my new 'usual' 2hr volunteering of the last 4 mnths to doin 10hrs this week cos i produce more ATP when i use ketones for fuel instead of carbs. Our ancestors in europe most certainly experienced ketosis during winter months. We are only just n just adapted to modern diet, such that add a ton o stress n those adaptations reverse n cause chronic conditions. Theres alot of childhood adverse effects that contribute too.
Most 'spontaneous' recoveries come from hard work of resolving issues, meditation, diet n gentle exercise. Having boundries, gaining assertiveness etc etc
