Forced From Their Homes By Chinese Money - Cambodia’s Land Grab Victims

  • A pregnant woman beaten to the point of miscarriage, 13 women sentenced to up to two-and-a-half years in prison simply for protesting and 800,000 people evicted from their homes. These are some examples of human right abuses in light of freeing up land for Chinese investors. With China now being the biggest foreign investor in the country amidst talks between President Xi Jinping and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, foreign companies are coveting land owned by local villagers.
The Insight team speaks to Sun Sophat of Pu Thoeang Village and Bov Sophea of Boeung Kak 13, both of whom are still fighting for rightful ownership of their land.

@Eidksjj Jsdjdjdj yea, my friends’s grandparents in China are actually getting paid by the gov to move into a new home that is payable and adjusted to their income. There’s this one grandpa didn’t want to move as the land around him house was going to be made into those really high highway roads, have u been to the city? They got those long intersection roads?? Yea so they just build around his house and ppl actually flock there to take a picture loll. If what this media is actually saying is true, the Cambodian gov should really pay these ppl to be moved out and build them a new house. I mean they can talk to China as Pakistan also went thru that in one area and the Chinese actually even agreed to pay for the locals to move. There was a research done by a research university in the U.S that analyses and investigates china’s impact of helping build infrastructures in other countries specifically by the BRI. They have found no debt traps or unfair treatments of negotiations. Remember that Cambodia asked China and agreed and they’re actually given an interest that’s lower than the average interests paid and aren’t doing the same route the west has done to trap many Asian countries in debt. I rather read the statistics and research when talking abt China these days, cuz there’s a rise of anti-China news reporting by the u.s. there’s a Cold War of u haven’t noticed.

Making way for development is happening all around the world, but we need to deal with the locals whom lives there.

The government doesn’t actually care about Cambodia, He just wants to stay in the position for money. For MANY years now other countries have been stealing land from them, and the government SEES what’s going on but they don’t care. They continue to put many families in poverty, it’s quite sad to see what Cambodia has become, before the Khmer Rouge Cambodia was just like America. Just until Pol pot took over, from 1975 to 1979. The war killed 2 Million+ people. Most educated people were killed because he wanted to see Cambodia fail, after the Khmer Rouge people couldn’t settle because of trauma, lack of money, and education. Cambodia continues to stuffer after 45 years, many people still in poverty. This isn’t a investment.

After Mao's death, the Khmer Rouge started to committed the most crime against Cambodia's people. They seized all property deed and document and burned them. It has always being their planned to robbed Cambodian of all their possession. Immediately, right after they capture Phnom Penh on April 17, 1975. They emptied the city and asked all the people to leave all their possession behind except for a few pair of clothes and a few pots and pens for cooking. After the Vietnamese captured Phnom Penh from the Khmer Rouge in early 1979, the city was looted by the Vietnamese soldiers and those arrived back to Phnom Penh on time to loot. For those who returned to their home on time was able to claimed their properties and possession. Those never returned got all their properties confiscated by the new government, which was set up by the Vietnamese.
For the countryside, on the other hand, with no document to proof of ownership, all land and farm was confiscated by the new government. The confiscated properties were then handed over to the district chief and these people were usually the spousal of a deceased Vietnamese. The district chief then can distribute or sold the properties to the local and enriched themselves. So land grab was not just a recent phenomenal. It has always being a post Khmer Rouge problem. It just not being reported because the Chinese hater doesn't have anything to report other than to instigate hate against the Chinese entrepreneur. The Chinese paid the money for the property fairly but the crime was committed by the properties confiscator or local chief.

Honestly, China isn’t directly at fault here. They have money and they have power so they do what any other country with money and power would do: they invest it. And China and Cambodia’s relationship isn’t new. It’s the Cambodian government’s fault for not treating its own people well. They should have a plan for the people they evict and some sort of decent compensation.
