  • A ramble about the origin of Tarot De Marseille. I’m no expert, just a student sharing what I learned. Most of my info was derrived from essay by Thierry Depaulis. I encourage criticism but please keep it constructive. I am more than happy to be wrong about anything as i said I’ not an expert😊 Feel free to share your opinons! Love and peace !
    * A few notes:
    When I referred to Cupid wearing a “Crash Helmit” I was quoting Depaulis. It’s not actually a crash helmit. It just looks like one. Also the argument about type one being older Is something Thierry addresses In his essay.. to be fair he says “type one has every chance to be older.” So I should have said type one “may be older.” Because we really dont know for sure.

    Loved this!! Look forward to your next video. I love TdM and got a lot from your presentation here. Can I ask, do you know where I can get a great version of the Dodal deck? Thanks 🙏

    Hi Justin! I found this very interesting. I have been wanting to take the leap and learn how to read Tarot De Marseille because I am mostly familiar/comfortable with the RWS system. It was actually some of Anna's (Astral Lady Tarot) videos that convinced me to purchase a Marseille deck. I never realized all of the symbolism within these cards. The two Marseille decks I ended up purchasing are the Trionfi della Luna: Paradoxical Rose Mutation (Patrick Valenza) and for the more traditional style art I went with the Tarot Of Marseilles by Da Brigh (available on Etsy and Amazon). I'm looking forward to eventually taking the plunge to explore this system. Thanks for sharing some of your Marseille knowledge! Much love! xo

      Hi Ang!! Thanks so much. I appreciate you my friend. I don’t have either of those but I really am starting to covet Trionfi 💙😘 I’m looking to relaunch the Marseille practice group eventually. Maybe after New Years

    I loved this video, Justin! Thank you for sharing your research and knowledge and guiding us to Thierry Depaulis’ work! I find this whole subject truly fascinating, my brother!
    Interestingly, my personal preference lies with Type 1 TdM decks (+ Noblet, if seen as a separate type!), and they remain my go to tarots to read with...although (who am I kidding?) I do love them all! ;)

    Great content as always! I've recently ordered a book from Depaulis which features two essays from the 16th century discussing the meaning of trumps and suit cards. Have you read it?

      I actually had that book in my hand just a few minutes ago! Don’t forget about Ross “the Boss” Caldwell and Marco Ponzi. I read a bit of it a while back but I plan to revisit it this month and hopefully review it on my channel.. Thank you my friend. 🙏

    I'm definitely going to jump on those documents you shared. Thank you. This was a very clear, well presented, and frankly fascinating overview. I hope more people watch it. I'm curious what you think. TdM style moved back from France to Italy later on. The art on the decks was embellished, and the printing method was clearly different. However for decks like the Soprafino, the general layout of everything is, to my eye, of the Tarot de Marseille family. Would you consider it a Marseille deck? Is it, to your knowledge, debated?

    • @justinmichaeltarot
      @justinmichaeltarot  Před 3 lety +1

      I agree about Lombard tarot. Thierry mentions it in passing. TDM was brought there and the Italians took it to a whole other level with beautiful colors and engravings. Thanks for watching my friend 🙏

    The Knights Templar actually demanded that Dodal remove the tax stamp on “Force” because religious organizations are tax exempt in the US, which didn’t exist at that point.

  • @mattlestat2703
    @mattlestat2703 Před 2 lety

    You missed the important type 1 Force as opposed to type 2 La force . La being the feminine prefix for the.
    The importance of this . Strength was traditionally depicted as Heracles/Hercules . So is this a woman and a lion or Hercules in Queen Omphales clothes with Nemean lion armour . Type 2 and modern cards just dont get it.

      @justinmichaeltarot  Před 2 lety

      Thank you for watching my friend. That’s very interesting. I was following what Thierry Depaulis points out in his essay. Surprisingly he does’t mention the Hanged man either though I added that as an honorable mention.Not sure if the La is omitted across the board. Of course now I will have to look 😂

      @@justinmichaeltarot nope only the strength card .
      Also le pendu. Heracles hung a couple of wood nymphs , satyrs , Cercopes ( been awhile since i read it .so not sure) upside down for stealing his club. Le pendu follows the strength card . Probably just a wild assumption on my part .

    Very interesting Justin ' but are you aware of the connection of the Marseille majors with the Cathars? You wanna know about the hanged man ? Are you aware of the map that's infront of you in the form of the Infinity symbol ? and what it means? The book that takes you to the roots of the Marseille is - the Spiritual roots of the tarot by Russell Sturgess* there you go...read this book and throw out the nonsense you have read prior to all .

    • @justinmichaeltarot
      @justinmichaeltarot  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Mario.. I never read those Cathar books. This was more a report on an essay that I read and it just looks at the history not really the symbols and what they mean and where they come from. I’ve just been gravitating towards the history more than anything because it’s what I’m into lately 😂
