You can rent a narrowboat for a few days and potter about on the canals. Its a beautiful holiday. You might enjoy it, the boats don’t rock around very much, so you probably wont feel seasick.
Your tours remind me of Audrey Assad's hymn, I wonder as I wander out under the sky. Last year, the semi-finals of a schools sports contest (where my youngest son participated) put English history in context. The four schools at the semi-finals were: Kings School, Ely (founded in 970), Pilgrims School, Winchester (founded 900), Salisbury Cathedral School (founded 1091), and Wells Cathedral School (founded 909). 4200 yrs of education represented by just four schools. The event was held in Ely. It was a lovely English Spring day and parents and family enjoyed Pims and scones as their boys did all the work. 🙄
Ely is a lovely town, and easy to wander through. The Cathedral is magnificent too. I haven’t been there in many years so it was lovely that you shared it with us. I loved the relaxing music you had in the background too. Thank you for sharing Mac.
Those (long) narrow boats, there are lots of places where you can hire a narrow boat for a unique holiday. Ely has a river, but the narrow boats were designed for the canals, and there’s an extensive network of canals across England. Just a few in Scotland and Wales. You can also hire a boat on the Norfolk Broads, which is an area of connected rivers and broads (lakes). We fell in love with the Norfolk Broads a few years ago and it’s now our favourite place to visit.
6:25 this is why I love England, just two people having a loving moment on a bench, people just quietly busying themselves ❤ lovely video as always ❤ And I think the city with a wall was called Chester?
Hi guys, Ely eh, I went to school there, historic in the extreme... If you like horses head over to Newmarket, or bump into some fellow Americans in Mildenhall, huge USAF base there. I'm a bit further north in Wisbech, I work as a marine pilot, berthing ships in Cambridgeshire????
Hi folks! Good to see you again. I hope that you and yours are well, especially the new arrivals.♥ So pleased that you enjoyed Ely. It really is a beautiful place. 🙂 A couple of quick points, if you don't mind. That is not really big enough to be classed as a Dock, it is more of a Mooring. Those Canal Boats are known as Narrow Boats, not Long Boats. Long Boats were what the Vikings used to sail in. 😉
Grew up near Ely. The cathedral is known as 'the ship of the fens' and as you might have spotted, is visible from miles away cos the fens are essentially below sea level. Ely is known as the Isle of Ely because in mediaeval times, before the fens were drained into defined waterways, it used to be cut off during rainy periods and people had to row to get to it.
The Cam is a tributary of the River Great Ouse which runs through Ely. The river was diverted in mediaeval times, the original course being to the south of the tiny city.
The long boats are narrow boats for navigating the canals that are extensive throughout the UK (the canals predate the railways - built by the navigators (navvies))
The narrowboats (I think enough people have probably pointed out the whole longboats thing) do tend to have deceptively high cabins, usually about 6'0" to 6'3" or thereabouts because the cabin floor tends to be below the water level (this does cause some "interesting" problems, like the drain in the shower tray also being below the waterline, meaning that the grey water has to be pumped up to get it out).
For some reason I really do feel they are called narrow boats, not long boats. Hopefully, I do not anticipate the Vikings coming again in their long boats.
@@Ingens_Scherz no, I did not copy you. In fact, I had already remarked on this when he was in another town months ago and called them long boats. I was just gently reminding him of the same thing that I had said before. I certainly do not read everybody else s remarks to copy theirs. And I certainly wouldn't accuse you of having copied this remark from the previous episode where he had said this before.
That was a nice look at Ely the town where I'll probably never go. Maybe I'll try next summer. I've often read of the magnificent Cathedral and it looks like the reality matches up to it's fame. I don't know which video had the wall in but maybe it was Oxford. That city has got a lot of really old walls in it. I think the old canal boat families. I don't think they were actually INSIDE those boats much except to sleep. I think the men and boys were outside running the boat and ensuring the cargo was safe and I think the wives did a lot of the work like cooking and washing laundry etc up on the deck or on the bankside when they were moored up.
My cousin from florida stayed in ely as there's a big us miletry base there she loved it here first visit to UK the she stayed with me in bexon in kent extremely old village no one knows 😮worth Google images as so many places in kent stuck in the 14th century
Nothing on the Isle of Ely? St. Etheldreda=St. Audrey=Tawdry [lace]? It was Cromwell's home, so stained glass survived the Civil War?; So many Ely stories you seem not to have stumbled upon. You will have to go back.
Spent a week on a narrow boat with my family. Best time ever. I think your family would love it.
By the way, the "long boats" are known as "narrow boats". If they were long boats, they'd be full of berserk Vikings about to raid the city.
Thank you for this video. We moved here from London 4 years ago and we are still in Love with this beautiful city!
Vikings had longboats, canals have Narrowboats.
Love your days out

Loving seeing your adventures, so nice seeing people enjoying my country.

Or York
Another great adventure into the medieval era!

Ely is beautiful. Plenty of history in and around too.
Ely is one of my favorite places.
So much to see and as you say, Mac, very relaxing

*Isle of Eels = Ely
What a beautiful town! Thank you for showing us around.

Good to hear from yah Mac ! You’ve been quiet, all to do with the twins ?who can blame you!👏🏻✌🏼
York , Chester, Durham, they have Roman Medieval walls York has a complete wall .
I learnt a lot, thanks
Oliver Cromwell's House is now a museum and the local tourist office. Just a few minutes away from the cathedral.
They have a wonderful Christmas Market in the cathedral. We get tickets every year. And they have a marvellous Bookshop in the town
Great video!! Lovely place!!
We’ve made a documentary on this place too….

Next time you are by a canal or river have a chat to the boat owners... we don't bite and you might get a boat tour. 🙂 👍
Awesomeness thank you loved it
Was the walled city Chester? Ely is beautiful. Thank you for the video Mac and Chloe ♥♥♥
Or maybe York? Or Conwy?
I was offered a job there, many years ago. Why didn't I take it? A beautiful place.
Thank goodness the long boats are only on the channel and not the sea for you to get sick. Try renting one
which will stay put for the week-end.
I've never been to Ely but now I think I might plan a day out there. I really enjoy your videos, all the best to you and your family.
For some reason I really do feel they are called narrow boats, not long boats. Hopefully, I do not anticipate the Vikings coming again in their long boats.
😂Exactly!
Just spotted this after leaving a similar comment. Did not mean to copy!

Quaint. Thanks.
Great video - gives a good feel for the City of Ely. You should try a narrowboat trip and devote a video to it. Thanks!
Yep, same river as Cambridge, the Cam. You can walk or bike from Cambridge to Ely by the river (if the council do their job and keep it in good nick)

I was born in Ely, it is a city btw.
Maidstone in kent has a very old walled prison you can walk around
preferable walking around a prison yard from the outside!
@lorrainemoynehan6791 yes can only walk outside but inmates walk the inside
Love your videos ❤from 🏴

Yes I wondered if they ran lout of time..Cromwell's house is so near the Cathedral that's why he lived there..His kitchen dates back to 13th. cent...
It's a Long NARROW boat .NARROW is the clue mate .
Centre of Maidstone?
York?

I think he’s asking if York is the city you were trying to think of with the wall.
Gloucester? They have a prison there behind an old wall.
Market towns: where people who can afford go to retire.
Old people home, has cemetery look about it,how to make friends the American way🙂😂😂🥹
