  • Is the new Nikon Z 30 the perfect camera for your CZcams or social media channel? I’d say YES if it didn’t overheat and shut down in less than 30 minutes when shooting 4K video.
    In this video I show where the new Nikon Z30 fits in between a full-frame mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z 6, and a 4K point and shoot camera, the Sony ZV-1, and why it checks off so many beneficial features for social media content creators.
    Nikon, if you’re listening, fix the 4K video overheating & shutting down record limitations and I’d buy the new Z 30 again in a heartbeat!
    CORRECTION: In this video I say the Nikon Z6 can record 4K without a time limit, which is wrong. The recording time is limited to 29:59...but you can hit 'Record' again immediately and keep going. (I.e. It is not a thermal shutdown.) Sorry for any confusion!

    I didn't return it, but, like you, I am disappointed. I shoot yoga videos and it is so much easier if I can just get going to a natural break. I feel like Nikon mislead me with the time limit. I thought I'd be able to avoid buying another external recorder, but that's not even a solution. When I hook it up to the Ninja V it only gets about 40 minutes before overheating. That's assuming mine is performing at peak. And it doesn't cool down that quickly, so when I do several recordings, the available time gets shorter. I like shoot in 4K, wide as I can, then I have good quality to zoom in and deliver in 1080p. The video quality that I get is excellent. I set everything on auto except white balance, and I often match the other cameras to it. It looks so similar to my Z6, it just makes it easy to match the cameras in post so I kept it. But I won't buy another one. It looks like when I get a third camera to replace my old d750, I'm going to have to spend more.

    Hello Mike
    Thank you for very nice and concise review. Question for you.... If you don't mind me asking, what camera and lens is this review video itself is recorded on? Is this Nikon Z6? Thank you for your time. Much appreciated.

    Good review. My 2 cents: Not sure who shoots continuously for 28 minutes. Usually, when you film, you film tons of short takes, then assemble them into one, continuous clip in post. Even when you shoot long event, like a mass, you wanna shoot several shorter clips, so you don't end up with multi GBs clip that will be too "heavy" for computer processor to handle. I can live with the 28min max recording time, no problem. Thank you

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  Před rokem

      It's a great camera if you don't mind the 28 minute limit, or if you were only shooting in HD. I bought the camera to videotape me working on wrist watches, where I will be head down in my project for at least an hour at a time, and I can't be worrying about a camera stopping. Yes, it is a tremendous amount of video to edit, but it suits my needs and my computer can handle it. FWIW, I purchased the Sony FX30, which does not have the time limit, albeit at a much higher price tag. Thanks for joining the conversation!

      @nadtz Před rokem

      My plan was for overhead product type shots that could be as much as an hour long then gets edited down to however long in post. It probably won't be an issue for most people but I'm glad to know I probably want another camera.

    Hey Mike! Thanks for great review. I'm looking for a camera for both outdoor vlogging and studio talking head videos. I produce True Crime videos, so i need a camera that i can plug to my PC and record up to 2 hours before shutting down. I need only 1080p, does Z30 have a recording limit on 1080p? Is heating a 4k related issue?

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  Před rokem

      Great question… The overheating is definitely a 4K related issue. Have you considered the new Sony a6700? It wasn't available when I did this review. The price point is higher, but still a huge bargain. Since the Nikon Z30 did not work out for me, I actually switched to Sony. There are many more lens choices, and I feel that they are more reasonably priced. Even though I've been a Nikon user for 40 years, I have officially switched to Sony because I think they are the future of video when it comes to mirrorless cameras. Hope that helps!

      I don't know if this is too late for you, but I read in an Amazon review that 1080p it doesn't overheat, so it sounds like it is a 4K issue.

    Thanks for your review. However, it’s a bit misleading that you said Z6 has unlimited recording time. I own one, it has an internal video recording cap of 29min59sec, unless you record externally (ninja v).

      @MikeFyxdt  Před rokem

      @PartyVibePhotoBooth.Com - You are absolutely right and I appreciate the correction! I've become so used to seeing the Z6 recording count-down from 30:00, and just hitting 'Record' again to keep going, that I think of it as continuous... as I don't have to interrupt what I'm doing to wait for the camera to cool down to continue. I just ordered the Sony FX30, which I will put through a similar test, and I'll be sure to correct myself about the Z6 so there's no confusion.

      Hi Mark, I have a tough time seeing ALL cameras with an LCD screen outdoors, unless I have a hat with a visor. I didn't have a problem with the screen outdoors for shooting video during my short tests. My main complaint was the 4K record time limits. FWIW the Nikon Z50 has similar specs as the Z30, but offers the viewfinder. Hope that helps...thanks for watching!

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  Před rokem

      The only way this camera will record 100 minutes is if you are recording HD, 1920 x 1080 video. If you read the fine print in Nikon’s marketing, that is what all of their ‘long-running’ claims are based on. When you switch to 4K Video recording, the limit drops to below 30 minutes, per their documentation. I wish it weren’t so because I really liked everything else about this camera!

    Hi Mike @sharonhughes6992. In your video you said that Nikon Z6 has no record time limit. Are you recording with external recorder? In spec I found that Z6 has 30 min recording limit. Thank you

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  Před 7 měsíci +1

      You are correct, as others have pointed out to me since I published this video. The Nikon Z6 is limited to 30 minutes of record time. But it does not turn off from overheating - rather it is a limit of the file system. In other words, if it shuts off at 30:00, you can immediately hit record and keep going for another 30 minutes.

    Well what if you're not actually recording and just have it plugged into a capture card like a cam link and doing the actual recording in obs? Would it still overheat?

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  Před rokem

      Daniel that’s a great question and worthy suggestion! I don’t think the Z 30 will overheat if it is just in standby mode. But my capture card is only HD, and that kind of makes the process moot since I need to record in 4K video. If 1080 HD video was ok for my project then I would do it directly in the camera, which is not as likely to overheat as 4K. The other obstacle is that when I am recording using my capture card or a screen recording for a long time, my computer fans kick into high gear, which adds background noise to my audio recording. If only the Z 30 could shoot 4K over an extended period of time then that would’ve been the perfect solution! :-)

    I'm a Nikon Z30 user. I've been using it for about 4 months. I focus more on videos. The weakness of this camera is that it often gets hot/overheats in 8 - 12 minutes, so the camera often turns itself off. Is it really like that?? and is there a solution???

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  Před 5 měsíci

      The problem is that most cameras in this price range, or even higher, generate lots of heat when shooting 4K video for extended periods of time. I have switched to using two Sony FX30 bodies, which have a heat fan and ventilation specifically for the sensor. They can shoot Video until you run out of memory card space. Other than that, I wish I could say there was a workaround, other than shooting HD video instead of 4K, and maybe blowing a fan on the camera to keep it cool, if you don't mind the wind noise. Good luck!

    • @MookieMc
      @MookieMc Před rokem +1

      @@justneededtime If you are livestreaming, then you should not plug your camera directly into your graphics card. The graphics card sends video out of your PC.
      I have my Z30 powered by USB (or you can use a dummy battery). Also, I do not record to the camera card because writing to the card uses a lot of processing power.
      Instead, buy an HDMI capture card (some are really cheap at $15 but go for a $30-$40 version with higher specs/quality) and use the HDMI output on the camera into the capture card and then plug the other end of the capture card into a USB 3.0 port of your PC.
      The PC will see the video and audio of the Z30 as a video source.
      Liverstream that video/audio using the free software called OBS Studio. OBS studio can either livestream the content to CZcams or Twitch or wherever, but OBS Studio can also be used to record the content to your PC instead of recording it to the camera's SD card.
      Perhaps you already know all of this and you are doing it and the Z30 is still overheating? If so, then there is an issue with your Z30 because I can go for hours and hours with the Z30 capturing the content without it overheating.
      This is not a solution for those who need/want to vlog on the go with the camera and are on the battery with a small capacity SD card. For those under those conditions, the battery will likely deplete in 4k before it overheats, but it also depends on what temperature is on the day of shooting.
      I understand that some overheating problems can be mitigated by keeping the LCD screen open so it does not hold in the heat.
      Also, in general, the specs shown in this video and listed by Nikon indicate a runtime of 28 minutes. Keep in mind that it also is using just a 32GB SD card and it is writing to the 32GB SD card. I believe 32GB is a limited amount of storage due to the large file sizes created shooting 4k versus 1080p, and that ends up being one of the limitations to recording times.
      I hope you find a solution to your overheating issues!
