As a victim of sexual violence this film was ASTONISHING and HONEST as all of Noé's work has been..... Exposing the hypocrisy of mainstream cinema and media and those who ache to believe in an alternate reality. I thought people who attended the Cannes festival were all experts or at least open-minded people who loved and respected the art of cinema, but it seems just a bunch of rich ignorant people pay for the right of being there criticizing something they don't know anything about. They, as someone said in the comments here, are the ones turning a blind eye to reality, running in 'the tunnel' if they found that horrible scene. You've got to remember it was 20 years ago and people were a lot less used to violence / porn / sadism on their screens. We forget how shocking the film must have been to them. There'd been violent films before, of course, including ones with rape, but this was so protracted and drawn out and realistic. So I think you're being very hard on them. I saw it in London with my Dad, of all people, and this young guy behind me said: "They just put up a warning for bad language! It's got a 9-minute anal rape scene in it." "Gee, thanks for the spoilers, mate!" :)

I think it's wrong to slag these people off for not liking the film, I mean it's not exactly an easy watch. There's a major difference between just watching a movie and appreciation overtime, kind of like a roller-coaster, while your experiencing it you wouldn't exactly call it fun and you might wanna throw up, it's only after the fact that you appreciate it and want to take the ride again

Et oui, Irreversible ça vous bouscule, ça vous malmène, ça vous sort de votre zone de confort, mais c'est aussi ça le vie, du beau, du sale, de la joie et de la douleur. C'est un film profondément humain. Jeu d'acteur brillant. Montage brillant. Prises de vues brillantes. On en prend plein les yeux et les oreilles. Très grand film, on y croit, on le vit et on souffre comme eux. Le temps détruit tout.

When Noe was asked about this scene, it was more about how random violence can be and how there is no real pattern, it's exactly why the film was shot the way it was. One minute your life is on auto-pilot, the next it's crash landing. He also mentioned women need to be aware of their surroundings more - nothing about "masculine violence".

But what you're saying doesn't make sense. This is cinema. And even more, it's a movie that rebels against mainstream depictions of rape and rape victims, depictions that tend to capitalise on the dramatic effect of such catastrophies. Noé uses it in a reverse timeline, and with a long shot of the act, to show us its repugnance, its brutality, the dark side that resides within human psyche. People should get mad at "dramatized" portraits of rape voctims, not at this film that shows extreme shades of black of human nature. They are, indeed, big dumb idiots, those people at Cannes.

That's what mainstrean hollywood is about : a set of rules, conditions and déja-vu's that make the most meaningless pieces in art history. And I still disagree with your point, because it's a view of Arf that instrumentalized, a quest for a message... It's a very semiotic way to approach art, and it's essentially wrong to feel Art trhough signs, through a purely 'what this sign means" lens. The greatest movies work a bit like musicality, where a sound doesn"t SAY anything, rather it makes you feel something, it embarks you on a certain wave (a pleasant one, or a disgusting one). Noé denonce la violence en nous la proposant crue comme elle est dans la réalité, c'est le dégout qui prédomine. C'est vrai. D'un autre côté le film m'a déjà pas mal choqué (je veux dire "traumatisé") en streaming dans mon canapé, donc je ne sais pas comment j'aurais réagi dans une salle de cinéma (surtout avec une mise en scène si violente : musique, flash, rouge, tantôt le froid tantôt l'étouffement, ... : c'est une mini torture du spectateur). Je pense qu'une partie de ces personnes a transformé le choque en colère, et je peux le comprendre : chacun ses réactions. Après il y aussi ceux qui n'étaient pas venus VOIR le film qu'on leur proposait mais qui étaient venu REGARDER le film qu'il voulaient (or ici c'est le film qui se laisse voir, le spectateur en est la victime, c'est comme ça que je le perçois). Ceux là ont mis une chemise ou une robe pour aller au festival de Cannes, et non au cinéma. On leur tend un micro et alors ils sont interviewés, deviennent des stars et disent du mal du film par bienséance de valeurs normales. Je précise juste que le film m'a vraiment dégoûté (au sens propre) mais je l'ai apprécié, surtout avec le recul, car il montre de façon très réaliste, je trouve, la bestialité et la violence pure contenus dans quiconque, tabou absolu (meurtre, viol, sadisme (?), et aussi l'inceste au début). Une pépite faite pour révulser : son visionnage est.... irréversible :)

Je n'ai pas compris et ne comprendrai jamais la bêtise de toutes ces personnes "choquée". J'ai vu le film lors de sa sortie, pas à cause des gros titres au journal télévisé et des commentaires identiques aux premiers dans cette vidéo, mais juste pour le titre. Ce film est magnifique et très bien tourné. Il a instantanément fait partie des meilleurs films que j'ai vus jusqu'ici ( j'ai une trentaine d'années) et fait partie de mes préférés (je le conseille aux personnes avec qui je discute cinéma). Original et la façon dont il est filmé, monté, les images, les couleurs, tout, j'aime tout. Alors je ne comprends pas à nouveau. Je félicite chaudement le réalisateur, les acteurs, tous ceux qui ont participé à ce film. Oui il y a une scène de viol... mais c'est un viol et alors?!! c'est une partie du pourquoi de l'histoire, si-si-si, et cette scène aurait pu être filmée de façon bien plus "choquante" encore (eh oui oui oui oui oh que si, je vous assure). Personnellement, j'avais envie d'applaudir à la fin du film tellement je l'ai trouvé joli, beau, doux et puissant (oui il faut arriver à la fin pour comprendre - bande de neuneus qui vivez dans votre monde idyllique) - mais je crois qu'on m'aurait lynchée :-( ... Bref Ce film est beau. Il est un de mes préférés. et je le recommande.
Parce que c’est gens n’ont pas compris que le cinéma, ce n’est pas que du divertissement ; l’Art est là pour nous faire ressentir des émotions. Alors oui, la scène du viol est dure, insupportable même ! Les premières scènes sont difficiles également et la narration demande un effort, mais c’est le but et ça n’est pas un but gratuit. Personnellement, j’ai été malade en voyant ce film : j’ai été écœuré, nauséeux. Mais c’est ce que le film devait me faire vivre parce que c’est honnête. Quand les personnages d’un film sont heureux, le réalisateur fait en sorte qu’on soit heureux ; quand le personnage est perdu, on se joue de codes de cadrages pour perdre le spectateur ; quand le personnage vie une horreur… J’ai été malade, oui, mais j’ai vécu une expérience. C’est ce que je veux en allant au cinéma. Si tu sors d’une salle de cinéma en étant la même personne qu’en entrant, alors le film n’a servi à rien - au mieux, tu as passé le temps. Irréversible est un film utile.

Ce film était insoutenable, imaginer 1 sec être à la place d'Alex, c'est ça qui est insoutenable. Et qu'on nous le renvoie à la face comme ça... toute cette violence immonde, c'est dure. In my opinion brutality being showed as in this movie always hits a nerve because people really do not seem to believe in the cruelty of human nature. They know murder and rape and everything in between going on on a day to day basis, but seeing this portrayed as what it could actually look like really upsets people. And I think that’s where the problem lies also in prosecution. People really want to believe that humans cannot just be evil and cruel. It’s not always mental problems, it is more often sheer lust for brutality…

it's quite easy to say that the reactions are awfull 15 years after the film came out . Imagine watching this in 2002 with no informations at all about gaspard cinema and knowing nothing about the story or the context around the movie, I understand that some of them didn't get the genius of it right away ...

But for me it proved one thing. there two kind of people, those who can't face reality and those who overcome the disgust to face it. Death and violence are everywhere but some people choose to close their eyes to stay in their comfort zone. Genius is the word for this piece of art, the casting and direction were fantastic

I just watched this movie yesterday but in the “right” order because it is the only version in cinema now. I didn’t know anything about Gaspard, Irreversible or context, like I never even heard a word about this movie or even its title. Because of this the beginning was a little bit strange, I have got an impression that it gonna be a simple romantic story with a little bit a comedy and drama... well I was wrong and shocked. But I liked it. Yes, rape scene was very uncomfortable to watch, especially when he hit her afterwards, but it was also emotional. I felt panic and maybe even real fear and it is not something you feel very often while watching a movie. The same goes for the whole Rectus scene. Of course my point of view is different compare to these people’s, because I have seen it in another order. But if a movie makes you feel so powerful emotions, then its director/writer is a genius, and it doesn’t matter, were these emotions positive or negative. I have seen more than 50 thrillers and near 30 horror movies and none of them was even close in making me feel something like these
Je l'ai vu sur mon ordi dans le noir et... J'ai du mettre pause à la scène dans la boîte de nuit. Pas parce que ce qui était filmé était horrible, mais juste la manière dont il filme et le volume à fond ça donne mal aux crâne. Ducoup je peux comprendre que dans un ciné, avec un écran 500 fois plus grand et du son à fond certains soient partis.
Esta película la mire pense que era la mas terrible y solo la pude ver 25 min, un dia la volvi a ver y entendí un poco mas de la vida, entendí que hay cosas malas que le pasan a personas buenas, que todo es irreversible cuando te pasan no hay vuelta atrás y como lo dice el film el tiempo LO DESTRUYE TODO y que no regresa. Es un buen film un clásico muy crudo de algunas realidades de la vida. Obra de arte.

Le film est horrible à regarder. J’ai skipper la scène de viol mais l’histoire est infiniment triste. Je n’ai pas compris la scène de fin. Que représentait la femme assise dans le parc? Et si j’ai bien compris au début, ce n’est pas le ténia que Pierre a tué? Par rapport à la scène de viol : j’ai regardé plein de films dans ma vie dont certains avec des scènes de viol. Dans la plupart des films/séries, ce genre de scène est censuré ou montrée de façon brève et parfois même romantisé. Mais la c’était juste horrible. C’était impossible à regarder. On avait l’impression de voir une réelle scène. C’était violent, c’était insoutenable. J’ai avancé pour ne pas avoir à voir un tel massacre. Le réalisateur a dénoncé de la façon la plus rude qui soit, ce phénomène atroce qu’est le viol. On a beau juger la personne qui a vu la scène et qui a fuit, mais aucun de nous n’aurait mieux réagi. Je sais que moi j’aurais couru sans me retourner pour chercher de l’aide mais jamais j’aurais eu le courage d’affronter l’agresseur. C’était un film touchant et très triste. On voit comment leurs vies se sont détériorées et ça rend ça plus triste. On les voient heureux mais on sait le malheur qui les attends au bout.

C est effectivement scandaleux et très révélateur de la psychologie des acteurs et directeur. Du voyeurisme que l'on appelle Art. Monica et Vincent ont une grande obscurité d'ame bien que très talentueux. Cela n'a rien à voir avec l'Art. Les gens de 2002 étaient bien plus lucides que maintenant. La manipulation est évidente. Et les problèmes psychologiques sous jacents, comme la self destruction liée au narcissisme, bien évidente: 21 années après, la triste réalité est de savoir que les nouvelles de viols sordides, de crimes aussi brutaux sont en hausse comme si les Elites voulaient leur cinéma spécial fait de movies plus vraies que nature. On filme tout aujourd'hui ses voisins, les gens à la plage, les voyeurs et leur portable et surtout les psychopathes et leur iphone traquant les victimes.
L’art c’est sensé te secouer, c’est vraiment une réaction de bourgeois misomuse. Le monde c’est pas les bisounours et l’art n’a pas à enfermer les gens dans l’illusion. Ce film dérange non pas par sa médiocrité car d’un point de vue cinématographique le film brille par son originalité et sa précision, mais ce qui dérange c’est bien ce qui est montré et la manière dont c’est montré. Il y a une indignation à deux vitesse, on ne s’indigne jamais d’un film de guerre alors que ces derniers montrent des choses atroces, mais le viol étant tabou il ne faudrait ni en parler ni le montrer. Bah voyons .

As a victim of sexual violence this film was ASTONISHING and HONEST as all of Noé's work has been..... Exposing the hypocrisy of mainstream cinema and media and those who ache to believe in an alternate reality. I am grateful there are artists with the gumption and foresight to show us who we are, what we contend with, what we can become.

I thought people who attended the Cannes festival were all experts or at least open-minded people who loved and respected the art of cinema, but it seems just a bunch of rich ignorant people pay for the right of being there criticizing something they don't know anything about. They, as someone said in the comments here, are the ones turning a blind eye to reality, running in 'the tunnel' if they found that horrible scene. Thanks Gaspar, for giving us something so well done like Irreversible.
You've got to remember it was 20 years ago and people were a lot less used to violence / porn / sadism on their screens. We forget how shocking the film must have been to them. There'd been violent films before, of course, including ones with rape, but this was so protracted and drawn out and realistic. So I think you're being very hard on them. I saw it in London with my Dad, of all people, and this young guy behind me said: "They just put up a warning for bad language! It's got a 9-minute anal rape scene in it." "Gee, thanks for the spoilers, mate!" :)

And even more, it's a movie that rebels against mainstream depictions of rape and rape victims, depictions that tend to capitalise on the dramatic effect of such catastrophies. Noé uses it in a reverse timeline, and with a long shot of the act, to show us its repugnance, its brutality, the dark side that resides within human psyche. People should get mad at "dramatized" portraits of rape voctims, not at this film that shows extreme shades of black of human nature. They are, indeed, big dumb idiots, those people at Cannes.

That's what mainstrean hollywood is about : a set of rules, conditions and déja-vu's that make the most meaningless pieces in art history. It's a very semiotic way to approach art, and it's essentially wrong to feel Art trhough signs, through a purely 'what this sign means" lens. Noé denonce la violence en nous la proposant crue comme elle est dans la réalité, c'est le dégout qui prédomine. Ceux qui quittent la salle et font les outrés se voilent la face, ne veulent pas voir comme l'ombre au fond du tunnel comme le dit si bien un com plus bas. Que dire de plus si ce n'est que le casting, jeu d'acteur et mise en scène sont incroyable. Cassel, Bellucci Dupontel et Prestia en vilain sont époustouflant

C'est vrai. D'un autre côté le film m'a déjà pas mal choqué (je veux dire "traumatisé") en streaming dans mon canapé, donc je ne sais pas comment j'aurais réagi dans une salle de cinéma (surtout avec une mise en scène si violente : musique, flash, rouge, tantôt le froid tantôt l'étouffement, ... : c'est une mini torture du spectateur). Je pense qu'une partie de ces personnes a transformé le choque en colère, et je peux le comprendre : chacun ses réactions.
Après il y aussi ceux qui n'étaient pas venus VOIR le film qu'on leur proposait mais qui étaient venu REGARDER le film qu'il voulaient (or ici c'est le film qui se laisse voir, le spectateur en est la victime, c'est comme ça que je le perçois). Ceux là ont mis une chemise ou une robe pour aller au festival de Cannes, et non au cinéma. On leur tend un micro et alors ils sont interviewés, deviennent des stars et disent du mal du film par bienséance de valeurs normales.
Je précise juste que le film m'a vraiment dégoûté (au sens propre) mais je l'ai apprécié, surtout avec le recul, car il montre de façon très réaliste, je trouve, la bestialité et la violence pure contenus dans quiconque, tabou absolu (meurtre, viol, sadisme (?), et aussi l'inceste au début). Une pépite faite pour révulser : son visionnage est.... irréversible :)

J'ai vu le film lors de sa sortie, pas à cause des gros titres au journal télévisé et des commentaires identiques aux premiers dans cette vidéo, mais juste pour le titre.
Ce film est magnifique et très bien tourné. Il a instantanément fait partie des meilleurs films que j'ai vus jusqu'ici ( j'ai une trentaine d'années) et fait partie de mes préférés (je le conseille aux personnes avec qui je discute cinéma).
Original et la façon dont il est filmé, monté, les images, les couleurs, tout, j'aime tout.

Je félicite chaudement le réalisateur, les acteurs, tous ceux qui ont participé à ce film.
Oui il y a une scène de viol... mais c'est un viol et alors?!! c'est une partie du pourquoi de l'histoire, si-si-si, et cette scène aurait pu être filmée de façon bien plus "choquante" encore (eh oui oui oui oui oh que si, je vous assure).
Personnellement, j'avais envie d'applaudir à la fin du film tellement je l'ai trouvé joli, beau, doux et puissant (oui il faut arriver à la fin pour comprendre - bande de neuneus qui vivez dans votre monde idyllique) - mais je crois qu'on m'aurait lynchée :-( ...

Alors oui, la scène du viol est dure, insupportable même ! Les premières scènes sont difficiles également et la narration demande un effort, mais c’est le but et ça n’est pas un but gratuit.
Personnellement, j’ai été malade en voyant ce film : j’ai été écœuré, nauséeux. Mais c’est ce que le film devait me faire vivre parce que c’est honnête. Quand les personnages d’un film sont heureux, le réalisateur fait en sorte qu’on soit heureux ; quand le personnage est perdu, on se joue de codes de cadrages pour perdre le spectateur ; quand le personnage vie une horreur…
J’ai été malade, oui, mais j’ai vécu une expérience. C’est ce que je veux en allant au cinéma.
Si tu sors d’une salle de cinéma en étant la même personne qu’en entrant, alors le film n’a servi à rien - au mieux, tu as passé le temps. Irréversible est un film utile.

In my opinion brutality being showed as in this movie always hits a nerve because people really do not seem to believe in the cruelty of human nature. They know murder and rape and everything in between going on on a day to day basis, but seeing this portrayed as what it could actually look like really upsets people. And I think that’s where the problem lies also in prosecution. People really want to believe that humans cannot just be evil and cruel. It’s not always mental problems, it is more often sheer lust for brutality…
People just show anything in the name of art these days. The movie has no substance, no message, just horrors. A movie made representing rape victims should be able to give some sort of consolation to the real victims. This movie would literally spike their PTSD. And who let the camera man cook? They definitely knew what they were doing by casting Monica. Its a movie made for pervs and sickos who are under a false narrative that its some sort of cinematic masterpiece. Noe's other movie Climax was also trash. People's reaction in the video is completely normal.

it's quite easy to say that the reactions are awfull 15 years after the film came out . Imagine watching this in 2002 with no informations at all about gaspard cinema and knowing nothing about the story or the context around the movie, I understand that some of them didn't get the genius of it right away ...
you're right, it's kind of a defense reaction from weak mind (still a pity for me). When i saw this film , i was in my 20 but i didn't quit even if i was disgusted and terrorized. But for me it proved one thing. there two kind of people, those who can't face reality and those who overcome the disgust to face it. Death and violence are everywhere but some people choose to close their eyes to stay in their comfort zone. Genius is the word for this piece of art, the casting and direction were fantastic

I just watched this movie yesterday but in the “right” order because it is the only version in cinema now. I didn’t know anything about Gaspard, Irreversible or context, like I never even heard a word about this movie or even its title. Because of this the beginning was a little bit strange, I have got an impression that it gonna be a simple romantic story with a little bit a comedy and drama... well I was wrong and shocked. But I liked it. Yes, rape scene was very uncomfortable to watch, especially when he hit her afterwards, but it was also emotional. I felt panic and maybe even real fear and it is not something you feel very often while watching a movie. The same goes for the whole Rectus scene. Of course my point of view is different compare to these people’s, because I have seen it in another order. But if a movie makes you feel so powerful emotions, then its director/writer is a genius, and it doesn’t matter, were these emotions positive or negative. I have seen more than 50 thrillers and near 30 horror movies and none of them was even close in making me feel something like these

Je l'ai vu sur mon ordi dans le noir et... J'ai du mettre pause à la scène dans la boîte de nuit. Pas parce que ce qui était filmé était horrible, mais juste la manière dont il filme et le volume à fond ça donne mal aux crâne. Ducoup je peux comprendre que dans un ciné, avec un écran 500 fois plus grand et du son à fond certains soient partis.
Esta película la mire pense que era la mas terrible y solo la pude ver 25 min, un dia la volvi a ver y entendí un poco mas de la vida, entendí que hay cosas malas que le pasan a personas buenas, que todo es irreversible cuando te pasan no hay vuelta atrás y como lo dice el film el tiempo LO DESTRUYE TODO y que no regresa. Es un buen film un clásico muy crudo de algunas realidades de la vida. Obra de arte.

Le film est horrible à regarder. J’ai skipper la scène de viol mais l’histoire est infiniment triste.
Je n’ai pas compris la scène de fin. Que représentait la femme assise dans le parc?

Par rapport à la scène de viol : j’ai regardé plein de films dans ma vie dont certains avec des scènes de viol. Dans la plupart des films/séries, ce genre de scène est censuré ou montrée de façon brève et parfois même romantisé. Mais la c’était juste horrible. C’était impossible à regarder. On avait l’impression de voir une réelle scène. C’était violent, c’était insoutenable. J’ai avancé pour ne pas avoir à voir un tel massacre. Le réalisateur a dénoncé de la façon la plus rude qui soit, ce phénomène atroce qu’est le viol.
On a beau juger la personne qui a vu la scène et qui a fuit, mais aucun de nous n’aurait mieux réagi. Je sais que moi j’aurais couru sans me retourner pour chercher de l’aide mais jamais j’aurais eu le courage d’affronter l’agresseur.
C’était un film touchant et très triste. On voit comment leurs vies se sont détériorées et ça rend ça plus triste. On les voient heureux mais on sait le malheur qui les attends au bout.

Ce film dérange non pas par sa médiocrité car d’un point de vue cinématographique le film brille par son originalité et sa précision, mais ce qui dérange c’est bien ce qui est montré et la manière dont c’est montré.
Il y a une indignation à deux vitesse, on ne s’indigne jamais d’un film de guerre alors que ces derniers montrent des choses atroces, mais le viol étant tabou il ne faudrait ni en parler ni le montrer.
