      @Har2h Před 4 lety +8

      @@warpnl1 those lies seem like taking shorter rout, but in overall it's longer rout.
      In the end of this vid you can clearly see the difference between those two routs and directors. One is practical, truthful, and knows when to take the shortcut (e.g. use of app that fixes audio for you but the other one doesn't even think about it and instead ends up with re-organising and re-mixing whole soundtrack for mobile devices). If you look at box offices, and budgets of Gasper's latest films only one that paid off was the "irreversible" the rest are always in the red.
      Idk which one is better, but there's clear evidence that those two are completely indifferent if it comes to making a big budget films. One just got luck (had connections - worked with friend's father on films) the other one just worked his way to the top.
      that's what i took from this interview, idk if im right or wrong for those assumptions. Just some observation and hypothesis.

      Whats means timing? Duration or rythm? Rythm is the base. Both of them has movies that shouldn't be full-length. For example try to watch some De la Iglecia movies Day of the beast for example cause of Christmas is soon and u see how much adventures can be in one lenth with perfect timing. And what make Refn with rythm all this was mad in asian movies before. Its quite radical joke but put more wierd neon lightings in Kitano's films and here you go) Takeshi movies made with math method

Akin and others...of course)!SO, THANKS YOU, THANKS, DANKE, GRAZIE, GRACIAS, БЛАГОДАРАМ, HVALA, СПАСИБА..."
    These two fellas made two of the most impressive films in Europe, in these last 20 years: Noe - "Seul Contre Tous" & REFN - "Valhalla Rising", along with "Breaking The Waves", "Gegen Die Wand", "Before The Rain", "La Vita E Bella", "Dancer In The Dark", "Assassin(s)", (of course, all these others I'm mentioning, aren't their films, but come from other directors. I'm naming them, just to put them in a context, that they're among the best as well)...and quite a few others ( but it won't be cool if I start naming each and every one I find to be amongst the very best since the 1990's till today)!

    This interaction between the two is completely eye opening. Refn is extremely narrow in his potential and the potential of his art form. His ideas are forced and systematic. Even his thoughts and questions and the way he addresses himself towards Noe is unconsciously condescending. This light reveals a lot about why they do what they do. Refn wants to be a great filmmaker and Noe wants to just make films.

    I've seen Gaspar Noé compared to Nicholas Winding Refn before, but I wonder how much of that comparison has to do with their usages of violence, and maybe colour? Because beyond that, I wouldn't really liken their films.
    Refn (and I say this as someone who really likes his movies) belongs very much to the artsploitation class like Dario Argento and Tinto Brass.
    Whereas if I had to find Noé a spiritual counterpart, this maybe a hot take, but I'd go with Rickard Linklater. Tonally, the two couldn't be further apart: Noé practically lives in the darkness, whilst Linklater is light, and real-life, almost to the point of being mundane [but never committing the sin of being boring].
    However, both Linklater and Noé seem determined to represent certain aspects of life (and death), that we seldom get to see, and most importantly, to do it _truthfully._
    They are both directors who use their cameras to capture truthful moments and emotions, and tell stories that ring equally true... even if that story is about a soul being ejected from its body and drifting through time and space.
    Even their explorations of time, whilst wildly different in approach, arrive at similar places. _Irreversible_ ends on a card that reads "Le temps détruit tous." ("Time destroys everything") but Noé has said, in interviews that the card almost read "Le temps dévore tous." ("Time devours everything"). Now watch _Boyhood_ or even the _Before_ trilogy and try not to see the Wolf of Time lurking in the background.
    In short, Linklater and Noé may be telling fictional stories, but they refuse to lie.

    Refn is not a good talker. He wants to imbue everything he says with meaning and intrigue, solely because he loves his art that much. However, he fails to do so and instead comes off as pretentious and condescending, mainly because of the language barrier and him being awkward in general. But, like with most artists, we see his best self through his art, because he can whittle down, analytically, all his mistakes and unclear thoughts into what he really wants to express.
    P.S. I find these two guys to be the most interesting directors in film today.

    Refn is one of my favorite directors but I prefer Pusher, Pusher II and Bronson to Only God Forgives or The Neon Demon. I think he gets in his own head too much, he's too deliberate in trying to make movies full of symbolism. He doesn't need to make straight-forward movies, he can be weird and experimental, but he literally removes 80% from his screenplays and then movies like The Neon Demon just seem way too stripped down, not enough substance at all. but he has displayed moments of genius. but this happens to all good directors. Tarantino gets in his head too much. Even Christopher Nolan who I think works well with smaller budgets but loses his grasp on the story and the script when he's given an unlimited amount of money to work with
