The format of this one is great - I'm Asian, and I'm pretty ignorant to all the Western culture/atmosphere, especially the ones near the cold war era.
Without narration, this doesn't feel like an "video essay" - I immersed with the era fully during the 70 minutes ride of this documentary. It feels like I travelled to the age, with the rise and everything happening around the Epcot center. It is great, like a historical ride.
Thank you for this kind of content, hope it's numbers can be better.

I felt similar, and honestly a lack of narration I think was a really effective tool in leaving the viewer to decide how they feel about it. Even Walt's initial idea for Epcot was dystopian and creepy and personally I think each direction the concept took continuted to be that way.

To be honest, I was getting a bit of cognitive dissonance because I kept getting swept into the music and the visuals and the scope of the whole project, and then, boom, a positive quote from Henry Kissinger.

@@madamebkrtI felt the same way. But at the same time, this also showed that at the end of the day there were people behind every facet of the project. Knowing what Disney has become right now it feels weird when you root for parts of the project only to see shots of nature followed by a photograph of the super consumerist Disney World, trailing off to nature again... which is then removed, in line with the blueprint of the project.
I think the things you feel by the visuals give a more nuanced, complex outlook on it than any narration ever could. It's truly art!

It reminded me of, like... what "17776" had to say about American football. So many of our cultural megaliths are an inextricable tangle of "something beautiful and treasured" and "something rotten and awful", and the best explorations of these topics are the ones that can engage with the whole breadth of that dialectic.

I want to emphasise the insane amount of practical artistry that went into literally every scene in this documentary. For example The newspaper sequence at 17:05 onwards was created over 2 YEARS. The majority of the shot isn’t digital, it’s real practical paper painted to look like the newspaper running on a homemade conveyor belt system mostly using Lego parts with certain parts done frame by frame. That is just 1 blink and you’ll miss it sequence in this amazing project!

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance broke down near the exit of the ride too and after failed troubleshooting we had to wait at least fifteen minutes to be escorted off the ride (got a free fastpass and used it on Star Tours lol), fun times. Seeing the behind the scenes and then everything in the finished product, I was in the verge of tears. So many are now glorified 3d films or 4d films instead of actual rides and show experiences. It was the experiences that made it what it was all those years. I like their Potter area as they have largely gone back to the blending of the two mediums there versus just screens. They're fine as a supplement. But when the entire thing is just screen based , the magic is largely lost in many aspects (not all). See Fast N Furious for reference lmfao

I absolutely loved this. I took my first Disney World trip in 1989, when I was 7. I'll never forget how it felt to stand and see Spaceship Earth for the first time. With the entrance music swrilling around me, I was just in complete awe. My dad felt the same way, and Epcot quickely became the favorite for both of us. Trip after trip my dad and I would go into Epcot almost every evening, just the two of us, after the rest of the family were done for day. Sometimes we would just grad a snack to sit and listen to the music. When he got sick, he would ask me to play Illuminations for him or just the entrance loop. Since he's passed, Epcot has become so much more to me than just a theme park.
This October, my husband and I took our 6 year old twin sons for their first Disney trip, and guess what? Their favorite park was Epcot. Since we've come home it's all the talk about. They watched this whole video with me and loved every second.
    Thank you for this.

You conveyed the beauty and legacy of the park that so many of its diehard fans love, and you did so with an attention to detail that made your passion clear. The CHILLS I got during the sequences where the attractions were coming together (particularly when Tony Baxter was introduced) and Spaceship Earth was being conceptualized/constructed were very powerful. AND you composed all of the music yourself???

I never thought I’d want to cry over EPCOT?! I’m not even a Disney fanatic, but this had me so in the feels pulling for EPCOT and watching all the different countries pass up the chance to be a part of it, plan after plan broke my heart. You did an incredible job on this film!! Thank you for making absolute quality content! I’ll look at EPCOT with a new set of eyes after this.

That was one hell of a documentary! Despite my initial sadness at the lack of Kevin's brilliant narration, the soundtrack, acting, and editing more than made up for it. Possibly Defunctland's best doc yet!

Without a doubt one of the best Defunctland videos I've seen yet. Epcot has always been one of if not my favorite theme park, so getting to learn about it's history from concept to production up to opening is a real treat all on it's own. But for it to be done via an orchestra, blending the music with the visual using both real audio from news and public broadcasts and acted out scenarios instead of the traditional tour through each act with Kevin was not at all what I expected and made for an unforgettable experience. I can't imagine the work that had to be put in for each part of this documentary, truly stands as one of the best documentaries I have ever seen.

So glad I decided to just sit down, put on headphones, and watch this, instead of having it play as background. The visuals were fantastic, and the audio put me into the scenes. Great work.

This particular style isn't for me, but not everything in this world has to be.
I can appreciate it as a masterpiece, congrats to the creator, and I wish more people would take big swings like this.

This, I missed the narration and verbal quips but I’m glad he’s taking risks and doing what he wants to do, and I can appreciate the artistry of it even if it’s not going to be one of his videos I watch repeatedly.

I genuinely think this is this channels' magnum opus, it's so beautifully, lovingly crafted and the obvious passion for all these different mediums and styles just perfectly intertwining is just something beautiful to behold.
I love when creators don't just stick to what's popular and actually take risks with their creations, it is such a joy to watch.
    Bravo.

This is genuinely one of the most beautiful youtube documentaries I've ever watched. I can't imagine the amount of time and effort that went into it, but I can see the care and passion and love. The visuals, the MUSIC!!!!!!!, the acting. All of it is fantastic. I teared up at the end of it. Thank you so much for sharing!!!

The historical guide in the description is actually amazing and I appreciate that so much. I’m SO TIRED of media that is meant to used and discarded quickly or without my full attention. I want to be fully engaged. I want to be challenged. I want to use my brain for God’s sake. Thank you.

Wow... I'm so emotional after watching this and I don't know why. The best way to describe it is this makes me nostalgic for a time I never lived in - visionary, optimistic, idealistic, forward-facing. It's crazy to see the amount of cooperation there was between international governments, private corporations, and the Walt Disney corporation in trying to put this together. I wish I could have seen it back when it first opened, to experience the wonder of human progress and the excitement for the future. It is somewhat regrettable see how EPCOT has increasingly changed over time: an IP-filled mash up of themed attractions.

Holy fricking smokes. I honestly have no words. You, my good sir, WITHOUT FAIL, continue to blow me away in the most amazing ways possible. You did it once with the Disney Channel theme documentary, and now, you've positively sucker-punched me with awe with this one. I salute you, the entire team that made this, and all of the hard work you put into making this happen. You're not just a CZcamsr anymore. You're a full-blown documentarian.

This is an incredible experience, I hesitate to even call it just a documentary at this point. I had the historical guide up while I was watching and the amount of detail put into that alone is just mind blowing. I noticed the 2019 start date mentioned at the beginning of this and spent the whole time watching thinking, “4 years for this makes so much sense.” You can just FEEL the time, effort, and care that went into the final product. I mean the different animation styles, visual presentations, the actors, voice actors, the themes and motifs in the music, instrumentation (particularly in the shadow puppet sequence, wow), the research and gathering of actual documents for reference, the guide even mentions that the craft tools used in one of the vignettes are vintage and of the era? It’s all just so amazing and detailed and so, so engaging! I hope you and everyone who worked on it are all so proud of the final product ❤️
