A cancelled stop motion animation led me to scratch-build a cardstock Showman's Engine, which I made able to be doubled up as a Traction Engine. Here's how it was made. Whilst it never got to feature as a prop in its intended use in a Bluebell advert, it's patiently waiting for a role perhaps as Trevor. It's quite Jekyll and Hyde as it stands; one side is a stunning red with amazing detail on the lining whereas the other is a humble green with red stripes. It does have a working flywheel which is a first achievement for my models. - Jak na to + styl
In terms of names, I’ve noticed Showman’s engines have been given unusual & unique names such as “Enchantress” & “Monarch”
Maybe too obvious, but, "The Iron Maiden"?
Very clever job with the paint being different on either side!
I had no idea just how small it was until you told us the bits were cocktail sticks.
How about the name "Janus", he was the the Roman god of (among other things) transitions, and, duality, BUT most importantly, he had TWO faces, which I think could be appropriate for a engine that is a traction engine on one side and a showmans road locomotive on the other side. Another appropriate historic name, but this time from Greek Mythology, is Gilgamesh, who apparently had the ability to shape shift. Rob Tyler has a Fowler showmans tractor called D. C. Ver, which is a bit of a joke as it says deceiver, and despite looking the part, it was actually built as a steam roller.
I am doing something similar to my engine "Sybil" she's a 1/3 size model of a convertible engine (having the ability to be converted from a traction engine to a steam roller). During lockdown I built myself a small dynamo and have been using it at shows to power 20 12v LED bulbs hung on our gazebo, but the trouble was you was restricted to being in one place, so I have made a dynamo bracket that will bolt onto the convertible flange on the smokebox. I'm not very good at woodwork, so I have used 15mm copper pipe and fittings to make a frame, which has wooden side and end boards held in place by U pipe clamps, the uprights are also 15mm copper pipe. This allows us to drive to the beer tent or fairground and generate and go back and plug in the the lights on our gazebo. The whole effort can be assembled or dissembled in around 30 mins so can be a showmans type engine for the evenings fun, and back again as a traction engine the next morning,
a really splendid model, mate!
namewise, perhaps from the Showman angle maybe something like Barnham & Co. as a nod to P.T. Barnham
Or perhaps Honeycombe as a nod to the Hollycombe steam collection near Longmoor? they have a collection of steam-powered fairground rides and machinery
As a volunteer at Hollycombe, we're very happy to see you recommend a name in our honour! It means a lot.
Wow Terrier55stepney, the working scratch built showman’s engine model is absolutely beautiful and the materials choices are amazing to use.
The "Red Drum thing" on the front is a dynamo. Which when connected via a belt to the flywheel generates electricity to power the ride and lights on the engine.
Thank you! That explains a lot.
Great work! I’d like to see it in another animation. You could name it W.S. Engine CO. After a certain LBSC engineer.
when it comes to names, there's plenty of showman engines with names such as "president" or "bluebell" (my point is, posh sounding names)
Beautiful piece of work! 👍 Always loved traction engines. @2:35
what a wonderful day this is. first unlucky tug uploads now we get a cool model video by T55stepney!
"What fun!" - Derek (season 5)
Wow I love this, I would love to see more of this card builds, keep up the good work 👍
Client: *needs a model for an advert*
T55S: so I had this piece of card card…
Great Video, Max!
That’s brilliant work
Very nice mate that's just like the one my family used to own
Nice work old chap!
Oh, the steam traction engine name is tomson and a very good model you made, man
Thats brilliant built one ages ago as test it wasnt as good as this one but looked ok once finished 😀😀😀
maybe Clifford the big traction engine could be a good name for the red side?? =D (side note ; it kinda looks like buster if he was a traction engine and not a steam roller)
Here's a good name for it if you want to be a little funny: "Iron Maiden" (yeah, the film showman's engine).
Amazing
6:40 I think that Baxter could be a good name.
