- Moving into a simple cozy cottage requires downsizing and letting go of things (lots of things in my case.) Things that clutter your house and head. Things that sit on counter tops and coffee tables. Things stuffed into closets and garages. Things you hang onto year after year, just in case you actually might use it one day. Things you may have loved once but now they drain your energy and mind.
You've changed, overwhelmed with a fresh sense of clarity, you crave simplicity in the space around you. This is where I'm at now, I started downsizing over a year ago, left for 6 months to travel and have arrived home to a storage unit full of stuff. Just looking at clutter gives me a headache. Now that we've moved into this simple little cottage, it's time to break free of excess, the clutter has got to go!

It's really refreshing to see videos where you're letting things go rather than constantly hauling. And while I do enjoy the haul videos from other gurus, I don't want to encourage that habit in myself.
I seriously love your new place! It is super cozy and perfect for two people. You're my favorite youtuber and I love the simple and low maintenance life you and Michael live. It just goes to show you don't need anything fancy and lots of expensive things in your life to enjoy it. You and Michael seem so happy together and humble!

Hiya I live in the UK and my husband, son, our Jack Russell puppy and myself live in a small two bed house we have a drive at the front and a lovely garden at the back, yes it is small but it's just right for our budget and it is the right size to. Like you we have made our house into a cozy home. We too grow herbs, peas and my favourite sweet peas which smell absolutely divine in the summer. You really don't need a great big house, small and cozy is great too. I really enjoy watching all your videos. Thanx for sharing x.

When I say this I mean you are very conscious about being healthy and you also realize that you don't need all the make up in the world. Thanks Christine. As a single Mom, I work everyday to try to figure out ways to minimize costs. Back ups of stuff was a big downfall for me. Your videos on decluttering really helped kick my but in gear this year. Thank you so much.
I really enjoyed your video. Looks like you picked a great color to go with considering you have no children or pets. White on white is great because it is makes everything seem bigger, gives a light and airy environment and is very chic. I too downsized twice went from large house with 4 floors to a 2 floor apt. in a private house 3 bedrooms 2 bath to a 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment. Happier now than when I had all the excess I did not need. Declutter your lives people. You will be happier!

You're super inspiring! Ever since watching your videos on decluttering and makeout 2013 I've been cutting down significantly on buying makeup and just truly appreciating what I have. It makes me sick to think of how much stuff I was buying when I wasnt even using the stuff I had. I feel so much better now, life's more in perspective :)

A place like that here would go for maybe $500 a month! It's crazy how different prices can be depending where you are. I absolutely love how easily you let things go and how simplistic and natural your style is, just beautiful and inspirational. I love your videos, I learn so much and I can't wait to see everything once you are all settled in! Congratulations :)
DH and I have a 23 feet motor home. When we travel we don't take much with us and live that way for weeks. Then we come home to the 'big house' and it bahoots me why we have so much stuff in the house. It spurs me to pack up things and take them to the needy. I think we've grown up in a society where the more stuff you have the 'richer' you are. Not so....the simple life is the way to go.
My hubby and I had to downsize 3 yrs ago after we lost our condo due to the economy and move in with relatives, but like you said it can be a freeing experience! We had so many garage sales getting rid of useless stuff and I can honestly say that I don't miss any of it. Love your cottage and it is already looking fantastic!
My best friend made me this very simple nail polish rack from some leftover planks and painted it white!She gave it to me on my birthday a few years ago and I am still very much in love with it! It makes it very easy for me to see all the brands, colors, and which bottles I have been neglecting. This either makes me give the poor guy some attention or pass him on to someone who would get more enjoyment out of him! Something to think about? I know you and Michael are amazing at DIY's :) Thanks to your declutter videos you have given me so much inspiration to downsize my collection of makeup and nail polish. I am definitely a hoarder when it comes to nail polish!!! pinksofoxy
Cozy! And I love seeing the purging of items. You really can live in moderation but, we're all so spoiled. Old habits die hard. Love the packaging of the UD vice palette. It's just so pretty!
This is so fun to watch and it really gets you thinking about how much stuff you accumulate and how much you really use. If only we could stop buying stuff and be satisfied with what we have.
I LOVE DECLUTTER YOUR LIFE videos. People including myself often forget that a cluttered room is a cluttered mind. It's honestly very refreshing when we simplify our life, and less stress too. Keep it up. There's not too many videos like these and it's very inspiring :)

I love all your decluttering videos. They really inspire me every time. After watching each video I stand up and try to sort out some stuff from my collection that I don't reach for. But, sometimes watching those videos can be very painful! I catch myself shouting out " Noooo, not that one!" :)
I'm thinking now, why have I ever bought backups of anything. I have never used up an eyeshadow in my life! you've inspired me this year to quit buying makeup and use up what I have. well, at least to attempt to use it up.

With the whites you are touching on to the Scandinavian way. Not only does it look clean and serene, but gives the Illusion of bigger space and it gives more light. The latter is why we do it, since we have all those dark months of the year where we need all the light we can Get.
You're lucky your partner is on board with all of this de-cluttering! I'm totally OCD (Clutter makes me both mentally and physically stressed out), and since I moved into his place, we've downsized on nearly everything in the house. However, the garage and attic are still packed with useless stuff!

I can relate to small spaces, we have a 530 sft rental apt in the basement in our home, we rent it for $1400 all utilities included, washer dryer , full kitchen , 1 closet, keyless entry, fully furnished. downsizing and minimizing is good for the mind, body and soul. I am proud of you both... good video. thx
While you were on vacation over the summer I have downsized my self from a 5 bed room home to a 2 bed room home.My new home is also cozy! I find myself doing the same thing getting rid of stuff you just don't need. One thing about a cozy home you can clean it up much faster!!! Good luck to you & michael in your new home.

I pay about 1200 for for an apartment in Portland, OR so 1000 for a house in Hawaii even for a small seems like a really good deal.
WOW - watched your videos from last year and I am truly impressed. Also amazed that 1 year later you are still letting go of stuff. I can relate as I am currently having a clear out.

I used to hold onto everything and luckily a few years ago I started downsizing, donating and only keeping things I really wanted or needed. I recently lost everything I owned including my car in the Boulder, CO flood. It was surprisingly not that difficult to say goodbye. I feel like I was preparing myself for that moment. It's all just stuff in the end!
Congrats on your new place! I've been de-cluttering step by step since summer and i love it! It feels so much better opening a closet and knowing what's in it, instead of thinking "what's in all those boxes, can't remember..." lol.
Seeing all that stuff go really does make you think twice about what you spend your money on.

The letting go and decluttering has been something I am struggling with except mine is books and sentimental papers. You are so inspiring this journey you have been through. I am a new subbie but have been watching for awhile watching all your videos on your channel. I have stage 4 cancer and have really benefited from watching your natural beauty care routines, no parabens etc. products that you purchase from vitacost. I also have been using essential oils. WOW that is small. My 2-bedroom apt is bigger than that. LOL. Glad you're happy with it. I could never live in a place that small, especially with another person. I like room to breathe and move. But to each their own. Your friend's house is nice. Love the kitchen!

I could definitely handle a place that size. I spend the majority of my time in the living room and almost never see the other bedrooms. I want to declutter so badly and I'm sure my house would be more energy efficient if it were smaller. Since there are two of you, the challenge will be for you two to give each other "space" in that space.

It has been a real inspiration to watch your journey over the past year and a half - You both have so much motivation and drive! It is fab to see others living in this way and focusing on the right things. I have traveled the world several times and could go again at any moment simply due to living sensibly and well within my means. Do we really need more videos about young girls buying 10 lipsticks which they are currently 'obsessed' about? No. We need more videos like yours :)
