Another classic by Corb Lund, this song traverses history to visit upon some of the most famous horsemen that ever dared to ride. From the Mongol steppe, to the plains of the American West, to the desert sands of Jerusalem, the song ties together the common struggle of these different peoples, in war and in death, as allies and as dire enemies. And in the end, their fate is the same, none of them a match for the destruction wrought by modern weapons. However, there may still be hope. Perhaps one day, the hooves of a thousand horses crossing the plain will be heard once again (preferably with peaceful intent).

Lyrics:
I'm a hussar, I'm a Hun, I'm a wretched Englishman
Routing Bonaparte at Waterloo
I'm a dragoon on a dun, I'm a Cossack on the run
I'm a horse soldier, timeless, through and through
Well I's with Custer and the 7th in ‘76 or ‘77
Scalped at Little Big Horn by the Sioux
And the tears and devastation of a once proud warrior nation
This I know ‘cause I was riding with them too
And I drank mare's blood on the run when I rode with the Great Khan
On the frozen Mongol steppe while at his height
And I's a White Guard, I's a Red Guard, I's the Tsar's own palace horse guard
When Romanov was murdered in the night
And I knew Saladin and rode his swift Arabians
Harassing doomed crusaders on their heavy drafts
And yet I rode the Percheron against the circling Saracen
Once again against myself was cast
Well I'm a hussar, I'm a Hun, I'm a wretched Englishman
Routing Bonaparte at Waterloo
I'm a dragoon on a dun, I'm a Cossack on the run
I'm a horse soldier, timeless, through and through
Well I've worn the Mounties' crimson, if you're silent and you'll listen
You'll know that it was with them that I stood
When Mayerthorpe, she cried, as her four horsemen died
Gunned down in scarlet, cold as blood
I's the 'fustest with the mostest' when I fought for Bedford Forrest
Suffered General Wilson's Union raid
And mine was not to reason why, mine was but to do and die
At Crimea with the charging light brigade
On hire from Swiss or Sweden, be me Christian, be me heathen
The devil to the sabre I shall put
With a crack flanking maneuver, I'm an uhlan alles uber
Striking terror into regiment of foot
Well I'm a hussar, I'm a Hun, I'm a wretched Englishman
Routing Bonaparte at Waterloo
I'm a dragoon on a dun, I'm a Cossack on the run
I'm a horse soldier, timeless, through and through
I knew my days were numbered when o'er the trenches lumbered
More modern machinations de la guerre
No match for rapid fire or the steel birds of the sky
With a final rear guard action I retreat
No match for barbered wire or the armored engines whine
Reluctant I retire and take my leave
Today I ride with special forces on those wily Afghan horses
Dostum's Northern Alliance give their thanks
And no matter defeat or victory, in battle it occurs to me
That we may see a swelling in our ranks
I'm a hussar, I'm a Hun, I'm a wretched Englishman
Routing Bonaparte at Waterloo
I'm a dragoon on a dun, I'm a Cossack on the run
I'm a horse soldier, timeless, through and through
I'm a hussar, I'm a Hun, I'm a wretched Englishman
Routing Bonaparte at Waterloo
I'm a dragoon on a dun, I'm a Cossack on the run
I'm a horse soldier, eternal, through and through - Hudba
Considering how hard ‘I Wanna Be In The Cavalry’ went, I love that this one is just as awesome!
This song makes me think of an immortal man who travels the world just to experience different cultures horsemanship
Makes me think of Buffalo Bill’s Congress of rough riders from around the World
The eternal equestrian
Some sort of eternally reincarnating cavalryman might make the basis of a neat historical fiction / sci-fi tale.
@@onwardtowaffles but like at the end of every book (movies dont have enough nuance for that) he dies only to be reincarnated in a different place, body and time
1st Book is Ghengis Khan's Mongolia, 2nd Book is the Crusades (Dies as a Saracen only to awaken in the body of a crusader), 3rd book he wakes centuries later as a Viking Horse Warrior, 4th Book he dies and becomes a British Hussar at Crimea and continues onto the 5th and Fights at Waterloo. 6th Book he's in WW1 as a German Cavalryman and is killed over and over. The Spirit is Weakened and its is the illuded end of the series. 7th Book he reawakens as a Special Forces soldier fighting in Afghan in his original Mongolian body.
@OLYMPUS XI your time line is a bit off. The height of the Vikings was before the crusades and the Crimean war was after the Napoleonic wars
We Horse Soldiers still exist...2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment aka 2nd Regiment of Dragoons Jan 1997 to March 2002, 14th Cavalry April 2002 to March 2005. Once a Dragoon always a Dragoon
Every time I introduce this song to somebody, I give them the verses in a “Who am I? riddle” style. Best answer I’ve received is “the Spirit of the Cavalry”
The horseman who was in every cavalry charge in history was Death.
A cav scout vampire?
@@sidekick6371 I do like that answer, I do indeed.
Done the same thing, only instead “cowboys returning to glory”

Horse Soldier, American Remains and Highwayman are those type of songs that hit you differently when you pay attention and realise the songs are about past life experiences, which makes it all the more beautiful
Very insightful Continuous Rage, Thank you
Same with spirit of the outlaw by the jolly rogers. Love these types of songs

I like your taste
I know I'm a year late, but this song Is both about Past and Present Life Experiences.
"No matter defeat or victory, in battle it occurs to me
That we may see a swelling in our ranks"
Most Cav Units now are Armoured. We might not Ride horses of Flesh and bone, but we ride Horses Made of Steel and Oil.
The vibes in this song paired with his voice is CELESTIAL.
I want this played at my funeral! As a former US Army Cavalry Officer!
See you in fiddler's green, but not for a while
I agree. Even though we 19Ds don't use horses anymore I feel a connection to this song

I swear to god, First time I've heard this song and I loved it. The first thing that came to mind was "Damn that's a lot of Reincarnations for a Cavalryman."

Why does this song make me feel such emotion.
I like how no matter how different all the cultures of the world may be the good majority of them share the fact that the horse helped them write their history
I live in the Canadian province where the Mayerthorpe incident referenced by this song happened in 2005. Four RCMP officers were killed, IIRC the biggest police killing in Canadian history.
This is one of my all time favorite songs and this is magnificent cover. To me, Lund’s original has sort of a weary touch to it, as you’d expect from the deathless, eternal horse soldier. But this feels a lot more energetic, upbeat-the other side of a cavalryman’s existence I suppose.
I think this version fits better honestly.
The original was a eulogy. This is defiance.
thank you i could not put my finger on it but it felt so different but not bad just different
Corb Lund version is what the Soldier immediately after being reincarnated in a new body attend being sad about constant repetition like aw crap here we go again this version is once he gets into the battlefield he's like oh yes I remember why I freaking love this and forgets about his woes of repeating
Listened to " I wanna be in the cavalry" and though that you'd do an awesome horse soldier cover ...... Less than 24 hrs later you post this , it's like an answer from the heavens 😂
Seth, I hope you consider completing the Corb Lund Cavalry trilogy with your version of "I want to be in the Cavalry: Reprise." The mournful lyrics deserve your interpretation.
On my list!
@@sethstatonwatkins Thanks, I hope a better version of the St. Patrick's battalion is in there, too. Stay safe and thanks for your music.

Coincidentally I was listening to covers of this song and this tells me now it was uploaded 23 hours ago!! Thank you universe! 🙏🏽😊
Corb Lund is great and you are as well. Amazing job!!!
Great cover! May the spirit of the eternal horse soldier be with you all!
I have been listening to this song on repeat all day
As a Cavalryman, I love this song and your cover! Thank you for representing us!
Another great song! Love the beat and the flow of the song.
Another wonderful cover!
ETA: Any chance of doing the Reprise of "I Wanna Be In The Cavalry"?
He’s already done it I think it was a few months ago
@@zayyyyyy07 I can only find the original, not the Reprise ver. Don't see it unless it was unlisted or removed since.
@@zayyyyyy07 I saw the original version but not the Reprise. I double checked the lyrics used in the June video and that's the original version. The Reprise is different lyrics slower. Which makes sense given it talks about the horrors of war. It's bleak but still a great song.
@@zayyyyyy07 It was not the song you are thinking of but the Reprise. The one that sounded like a dirge dedicated to the Southern Cavalry.
@@WaynettePorter my bad I miss read your original comment!!!
I like it very must
It was your “I wanna be in the Calvary” cover that introduced me to Corb Lund and this became my favorite of his song.
This feels like the story of the war horseman of the apocalypse.
I've only ever known Corb Lund as the "Truck Got Stuck" guy when I listened to country. It's awesome to hear how good of an album Horse Soldier is. Thanks for introducing me to this great song with a fantastic rendition. 👍
He starts my mind just goes somewhere on a battlefield and i can cleary see my self there charging with my friends 💪💪💪💪
One of my favorite covers of yours, combining some of my favorite things, horses, history, and a song that tells a story. Keep up the great work, thank you
You left out the last verse, though to hear on the original recording. Canadian Cord Lunds reference to the war of 1812
I's with the Aussies at Beersheba took the wells so badly needed
And with the Polish lancers charging German tanks
Saw Ross' mount shot down at Washingtown the night we burned the White House down
And cursed the sack of York and sons of Yanks
Yeah he does a fade out in his version, prolly could have added it and another chorus. Maybe on a Spotify version!
"Polish lancers charging German tanks" is apocryphal. The Polish cavalry generally fought with carbines in WWII, and a Polish cavalry brigade had some 37mm antitank guns. The lances were ceremonial. A Polish cavalry unit did charge a German motorcycle recon unit, and unexpectedly found themselves facing the associated German recon armored cars (Schwere Panzerspahwagen).
Not heard this song before- love it ❤️
