You're one of the rare enthusiasts that actually enjoy cinema. You'd assume most HT content creators were, but they're only interested in the gear. They like new toys, and playing with them. And love promoting them. None of that actually has to do with appreciating cinema as art and entertainment.
Thank you so much for saying that! I absolutely agree with your assessment of other HT enthusiasts, and learned a few years ago the hard truth that most guys in this hobby don't really care that much about movies...
I’ve got a 16x9 with a JVC also, and I put together a budget electronic masking system. I use a roller shade tub with a WiFi roller shade motor. The curtain is velvet which I bought and brought to a tailor to make. So when it’s 16x9 content the curtain is open and the image is centered on the screen. When its scope I shift the image down to cut off the bottom black bar and drop the curtain to cover the big top black bar. I’ve now got it all integrated to a single button press or voice command. It’s a decent affordable masking solution, and much better than the manual mask panels I had before.

I am also in the process of renovating my home theater and I like the clean look, colors you chose on yours. I can relate to your number one decision as I tend to look for those things in movies as well. I also enjoy gardening and I am now beginning to learn to sit back and enjoy the hard work instead of constantly trying to fine tune things. Thanks for sharing.

Aquaman has an incredible sound experience and the overall contrast and saturation picture performance is insane but I didnt care for the movie at all .
Just do what You want its your theater
Sounds like our conversations...shut up and enjoy the movie! The quest for perfection is hard. It is fun just to sit down a watch a movie. Watched Jurassic Park last weekend with the wife and it was awesome!

Yeah, I love watching in my theater. I only have a 7.1 right now and still enjoy nearly everything I watch. It's really enveloping and I have really even dialed it in all the way. Soon I'll add heights and dial in my subs a bit better.
Very good video, I totally understand about going down The Rabbit Hole! I had to crawl out of it myself lol. My wife and I enjoy our room much more now with just watching movies or old TV shows that we liked growing up. Afterawhile leave the tape measure, the Meters,and software alone and just enjoy your room.
Thanks! But I would argue there's nothing wrong with tape measures and SPL meters, because you want to make sure your room set up as good as possible... But once you do that, then it's definitely time to enjoy the room, and stop worrying about all the other stuff.
@@TerminatorJuice That's what I meant too,after you get all of the calibrations done and everything adjusted,than take the time to sit back and enjoy your room.
@@gregoryjolly1734 Exactly! Sadly there are plenty of guys who never put that stuff away, and always seem to tinker with settings instead of just watching movies. I don't understand it, but to each their own I guess...
Some of us just cant help ourselves lol. Something new comes out, always something to be distracted by. It is a Hobby after all Lol. I'm just happy I've gotten to the point of just sitting back and enjoying.@@TerminatorJuice
@@TerminatorJuiceThat's the fun for them in this hobby. I remember way back, this "photographer" just kept buying different lenses and just kept taking pictures of resolution charts. It was a slower process with film, so I guess that's why he was in the hobby for so long.
Id go 16:9, and build a pole to the left and right side of the screen, wrapped in black velvet to not cause reflection.
Then build the masking out of light mass wood, like balsa and wrap it with black velvet to mask.
Attach the balsa masking to that pole, with stoppers, so you kind of use it like an elevator. Just lift it upto mask when needed with stops there to hold it in place.
Beautiful room!! You have similar design tastes as me. I dig the minimalist look without toys and other crap distracting from the movie.

I loved your video and you are very right, we obsess over the image and sound quality and we do not enjoy the most important thing, which is the plot and script.
I have two memories on my yamaha rx a3070 before yours, one at 5.1.4 and the other at 7.1.4 because if not, the movies were all played from 5.1 to 7.1 and I didn't want the surround back to play if the director I had not arranged it that way, and if it came in 2.0 the same thing. Do you have the same one?

I have the RX-A3080 and have it set to run all 5.1 mixes as 7.1... I tested multiple scenes switching back and forth, and I preferred it with the forced 7.1 enabled.
Nice setup. It's a bit of a black cave, but that's the case for front projection theaters. I'm low key annoyed there are no home theater projectors that are 2.35:1 native. I'd be happy with that, and then varying amounts of side black bars for lesser content than movies, like TV etc in 16:9. Sure you can buy very expensive projectors and an anamorph lens but that's a bit beyond my budget, and a faff to deal with. Native 2.35:1 would be perfect. But maybe I'm a minority there. As it stands, with projectors being 16:9 native, may as well get a 16:9 screen and just deal with black bars over and on the side for old content. Ever consider an ALR screen? Even in a pitch black room a higher gain but ALR screen might further increase contrast. But they're pricey if you want top of the line, like an SI Black Diamond.
Black cave??? First off, it's a theater. Secondly, I have bluish gray walls with a lighter gray carpet, so I'm far from the type of guy who has black velvet everywhere in his room! Lol.
And I see no reason for a native scope projector, since like 15% of movies still use 1.85:1 or are IMAX enhanced... not too mention all the great shows that are in 16x9 ratio.
As far as ALR or gray screens go, every expert I've talked to said that you don't need one if you have full light control in your room...and from what I've seen with my own eyes, I believe them.

Great video, I am in the process of looking at projectors and a screen. I have a 77 oled right now. I have been nervous about projectors, just afraid that I wind like it and it’s a big investment. I am looking at a drop down 235 120 inch with the no5 or new Sony laser. What is your seating distance from the screen?
It's about 11 ft from my eyeballs to my 114" scope screen, and I could maybe sit 6"-12" closer if I could move my seating up... But overall I'm really happy with how immersive it is at my current size and distance.
Also, I had a 92" 16x9 screen before, and I can tell you it's not even close to the experience you get with a large screen and projector! If you're thinking about doing it, my advice is to just do it, because I feel you won't regret it!

Man you've been putting in work! I love the transformation of your room over the years, it's truly amazing and it looks like the hard work has paid off.
In regard to your question.. I'm very much in the rabbit hole of looking for movies with the top notch PQ, dynamic Atmos tracks, and LOADS of bass (with a BEQ file to match). I only have so much time to watch a movie so why not spend my time watching films that bring out the best of what I've put so much time and money into. I'm open to watching anything but if it's my choice I'm going to be looking for the characteristics I just described. Just my 2 cents.
I lived that life for awhile, and I can tell you, it was the worst decision I ever made! You're never wasting your room when you watch a movie, unless it's a terrible film! Lol Great bass, dynamic Atmos mixes, and top notch video quality don't mean anything if the movies is trash! I'd rather watch a great film with no bass, then a bad film with amazing bass...
It sounds absolutely counterintuitive, but I actually use my room way more since I stopped worrying about that stuff...
@@TerminatorJuice no listen I hear you brother. It's crazy to say but I probably like the technical stuff over the actual content. But listen man when its a an awesome movie that checks off all the boxes I'm in for a GREAT time! I'm sure I'm missing out on some great movies but I'll leave those films for my living room or bed room or something.
One other prerequisite I have is the movie needs to be over a 6.0 on IMDB unless its a horror movie which I find people rate to harshly.
@@twistacatz I definitely agree that there are some movies that don't need to be watched in a dedicated home theater... Like romantic comedies or Twilight shit! Lol! But for me, I stopped watching movies in the living room once I got my scope screen last year, so I watch everything in the theater now.

With columns did it help audio at all? Did you put any absorption material around edges of speakers?
Not sure exactly what you're asking, but putting in-wall speakers in the columns definitely improved the audio for my side surrounds. Also, I don't know what you mean about putting absorption around edges of speakers...
What JVC projector did you buy and how big is your screen size?
I went with the NP5, which seems like most agree it's as good or better than the NZ7. And my current screen size is 113.5" diagonal(2.35:1 ratio), and I sit about 11' from it.
@@TerminatorJuice that’s interesting. I myself have an older JVC 550 projector that’s getting long in the tooth. I’ve had it for about eight years now and was thinking about upgrading to the NP5. And yes the reviews that I’ve read mostly state that the NP5 closely rivals the NZ7. I presently have a elunevision Cinemascope acoustically, transparent, 135 inch screen. Do you think the NP5 has enough light output to support that size of a screen. Thank you so much for your reply.
@@davemccague222 Check the projector calculator website and compare the light output between what you have and the NP5, with your throw distance and screen size. I would think so, tho...

@@Joel-fz2uf For the times when the height channels are actually utilized well in a movie mix, it's really cool... but that doesn't happen nearly as often as it should! Also, my ceiling height is only 6' 8", so my setup isn't really ideal for creating a sound bubble between the bed layer and Atmos speakers, so I'm probably not the best person to go by. Lol
I am about to purchase an RS1100/NP5 which is on sale right now. Curious, is there (1) change in light output if the setting is set to low, medium or high? (2) how loud does the fan get if set to “high” (any measurements available.) (3) Whose scope screen did you choose and whose 16/9 will you choose the next time? My room is light controlled except I have lighter coloured walls and a white popcorn ceiling and young grand kids that need monitoring with very short attention spans so I am going Screen Innovations 120 inch Slate AT 1.2 for my next screen very soon.
There's only low and high lamp settings and the brightness differences is about 15% dimmer on low. The fan noise on low is really quiet, but on high it's unbearably loud, so I run mine on low. I went with a silver ticket acoustically transparent screen from Amazon, and I would say it is a really good screen for the money... $500 compared to $2,000+ for brand name screens, which may or may not be noticable better. And I'm not sure what your room layout is, but just paint your ceiling a dark color and thank me afterwards. ; )

Meanwhile, 15% loss in brightness is about 250 lumens or about a total 1600 lumen output? My current Sony 285es is 1500 lumens - with a brand new bulb if I were to spend the $700 CDN. Currently I have 2500 hrs. in it after 6 years of use. I guess the JVC is worth the upgrade. Granted it is 13.5G projector vs up to 40 G for the JVC etc. As for the screen, SI is up there with Stewart at $6000 CDN (with 40% exchange). Maybe before I take the plunge, I should look at Amazon and Silver ticket!?
@@marvinabugov4579 Just paint the ceiling flat black and then ask for forgiveness afterwards! Lol. Also, are you going with acoustically transparent screen? If you're not then I definitely wouldn't spend money on an expensive screen, because it's not that hard to have a solid white fabric that reflects light! If you are going acoustically transparent then I would stay away from microperf unless you have some really high end speakers that can put out some serious db.
@@TerminatorJuice I am going AT because I have the centre speaker inset in the wall (Professionally installed 15 years ago.) . I assume by microperf you mean a screen that has many more screen holes than the normal? Stewart charges much more for that choice. I don’t think SI has that option on its Slate AT screens, but I will check!

I think 4K matters less with Projectors. As far as the sound, 5.2 is good enough, Anything after that is a bonus both sound and video wise. If I’m by myself it doesn’t matter but if I have friends over, I’d rather watch a movie that has 4K and at the very least 5.2.
If you're talking about 4K quality when streaming, then yeah it's better than HD... But whether it's my OLED or my JVC, the difference between a Blu-ray and a UHD disc with movies, is not really noticable IMO. They both look great!
@@TerminatorJuice Hmmm. If I’m understanding you correctly. As far as physical media is concern, I can see a difference between 4K and regular HD like night and day on my 4K television in my eyes. But that’s just my opinion. Now with Projector I can tell less of a difference between HD and 4K. That’s why it doesn’t matter to me if I buy a pixel shifting Projector or a full native. As far as streaming I never stream 4K so I wouldn’t know.
@@Losttouchjs Ever heard the term "Faux"K? It refers to the fact that the majority of movies released in the past 10+ years were finished at 2K(1080p), so you're not even getting a real 4K resolution. Which means that there is next to no difference between the Blu-ray and 4K UHD from a resolution standpoint, because you're just seeing an up conversion of 1080p.
Now if the film was shot AND finished at 4K, it definitely can look significantly better than films finished at 2K... but even then I'd wager that most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference in a blind shootout between the 1080p Blu-ray and 4K UHD version of any film.
@@TerminatorJuice Like I said, it’s just my opinion. Regardless if I’m seeing an Up-Convert or a True Finish 4K image, I see a difference. With a Projector not so much. You may see something different and that’s ok too.

Agree with your number one 100%. I’ve struggled with this issue as well. Upgrading my room atm. Friend came over last night and had never seen Galaxy Quest, even though it wasn’t 4k, it still looked great on my RS1100.
On my JVC I think a great looking Blu-ray looks just as good as a great looking 4K disk, so I never worry about that when choosing what movie to watch. : )
