- At the Bass Cat Boats dealer meeting a few weeks back we got the chance to take a Bass Cat Eyra with the Mercury 300 Racing motor out for a spin and tried to get a sense of the boats top speed, and how it handles at speed. Note watching this on the TV here at the house I finally saw that Kenny got 86.8 mph right there at the end..friggin zoom

Amazing footage. Going to to try some of the techniques to see if I can counteract the chine walk on my boat. Also have a feeling that I am also over trimming my boat coming from a 90HP to a 200HP on a similar hull .
Just don’t over trim and check jack plat level.
I think when we come from slower or more under powered boats that is the tendency

Bob I think with a hotfoot, blinker trim and a tricked prop there's quite a bit more speed in it

Having owned a Basscat PIV with a 3.0 EFI and also a Z521C like Ken’s old boat- neither the Cat nor the Ranger liked too much trim. Much different than the Skeeter ZX200 (my first boat) it liked the trim all the way up and I could drive it with no hands on the wheel. The Skeeter was a kidney killer though!
Someone was generous enough to take me out on his Eyra last year just so I could get a feel for the boat. It's on my short list of potential next boats. I couldn't believe the mid-range acceleration... and that was with a 2 stroke 250 ProXS.... unreal performance, but definitely needs some seat time to learn how to drive it. It fished well but if you're vertically challenged like myself, the lower sitting position in the cockpit makes it a little hard to see over graphs mounted to a BBT style mount. Solid feel and performance like all BBC boats.
Going from zero to "HOLY SHIT!" in no time flat.

Bass Cats are screamers, and don't like a lot of trim had my 21 Pantera II to 74 and know I can squeeze a tad more out of the Merc 4 stroke. Had I had the room, would be a Cougar in my garage. But my PII is fine for this old man!
Very nice ride! Obviously didn’t appear as stable as your Lynx. Would like to see a walk through of the Eyra next time you are around one.

Great video, Ken. I’ll be purchasing a new Eyra next year and trying to determine the best motor for me. I know most guys package the Eyra w/ a 250 HP. Are you aware of how the boat will handle w/ a 225 Merc ProXs 4 stroke?
Eddie I haven't seen anybody running that but I'd think still a low 70's boat

Any boat at that speed will have some chine walk bud once you get it set right jackplate and trim its very easy to drive.
Mostly that was coming from over trim. Did not see it as much when Kenny was driving. He knows the feel of trim for the cat better.

@@easonterra hey bud, I’ve ran strokers and a few other fast boats. And I own a eyra now. Just because a boat is capable of 80+ doesn’t mean you have to go that fast. Your vehicle is capable of 100 but you don’t go that fast down the highways.
Can't afford the boat, but wouldn't mind having one of those steering wheels for my boat. Looks sweet.

Hey Ken, thx for the video. Was this 300R rigged with the power assist steering or was it hydraulic? I’ve heard the power assist steering at these higher speeds can be a sketchy.
Shawn if remember right it had the assist. I haven't heard ya or nay on it myself.
Ken just curious did you happen to get a measurement of the deck at the front seat on this boat like you did for your boat review series? I know this wasn’t a typical review. Just would like to know what it is as this is a boat that’s at the top of my list. Thanks.

I just bought an Eyra, what trim setting on the Smartcraft gauge did you have it set at for those runs? How high was the jackplate? I’m trying to dial mine in and it’s a beast!
Jack plate was on 2, very little trim but didn’t see the smart gauge to know the setting, but no rooster tail
@@KenSmithFishing Have you ever tested the cougar? Just curious what the hole shot jack plate you had it on. Possibly about the same as the Eyra? Just getting my new 2023 Cougar fine tuned coming off a 2020 Nitro z19.
That Eyra is really fast. I don't know if I can get insurance on a 300 R motor. State farm has been tough.
Every boat I have ever bought will top out at 59 mph...
With the governor built into that hull I'd bet the cougar is very close if not faster than the erya

You know it seems a fun boat to drive and the speed is really attractive, but I just really like a wider fishing platform up front. If the new Puma STS really does turn out to be 2-4 mph faster than the Lynx, and it has the wider front deck, I'll be tempted if it rides like the Lynx in big water

What is the maintenance on this motor? Every so many hours the valves have to be adjusted?
As I am looking into a Verado 300
Chaz not sure on the Verado, my 4 stroke is oil change every 100 hours and I change out the water intake impeller every year

On the 300R I was wondering if the valves on it require adjusting more than a regular 300 motor.

@@kolbybakerfishing6255 trust me I would love 300 400 hp. My last ranger 2019 and waiting on gambler to come out with new boat design fron SC. I heard 21.6 250 running 88.7 and it was tournament loaded we see but number 2 is basscat their is no more ranger boats over price nitro now

Any boat with a 150 or over should have a hotfoot. That thing chine walks pretty bad. Good video though. Just seems very foreign and unsafe to drive that fast with one hand on the wheel. Why no hotfoot?
I guess since it's the dealer meeting they don't fully rig them
@@KenSmithFishing just seems pretty unsafe. I mean ultimately its on the driver to be safe, but a hotfoot to me is as important as a kill switch. I compare that to having a throttle lever in your truck. Just seems like really unsafe/old thinking. I get it that boats used to run 35 mph for fishing but 70+ is a diff creature. Just my opinion , all boats that run 50+ should come standard with one.

Meh, I'd take the Ballistic .223 over this in a heartbeat and push 90-92 with poles and 2 more feet of boat.
Yeah the .223 or .204 with the 300 and sport will flat out haul ass for being 21+ feet long
Add another $20k for the ballistic and pray they are in business in 10 years as well....lol
@@BSmith-qt7ev considering they’re moving operations to a more bass boat friendly area, I think they’re making some long term plans. In the event that aren’t around in 10 years, who cares. If you have one you aren’t having any structural problems with those boats. Ever. Entire boat if fully vaccum infused and they’re built like tanks.

I got a regular style STV with a 2.5 300 Drag at 127 on my Stalker Radar gun in 1997 maybe. Pretty heavy boat with interior for 5. 34 Mazco cleaver if I remember right. I got the DCB owner in 93 or so with what was then the 2.5 SS(Prior to the Drag moniker) at 134 in a 19 Daytona a new stepped bottom when he was still rigging Eliminators and just came out with the DCB Mach 22.
