Paul Heyman wrestling Jim Cornette is such a weird wrestling fun fact that I didn't know until today.
JC Holmanation Even more shocking is that we was 23 years old at the time. Makes him kinda look good these days
Paul Heyman(like Jim Cornette himself) has one of those faces that tend to look half their age.I myself could look in my Early 20's if i shave my beard....
Typical millennium baby... 😕
@Alsebra -- true, Heyman DOES take much better care of himself these day's than Cornette does. I personally find it ironic that the Heel in the fight(Heyman) is more "beloved by fans" nowadays than the Face(Cornette)...
@Alsebra -- i personally hated Cornette as a babyface. He just didn't have the natural attitude for it. He would've been much better as a partial Heel(certain lines he Wouldn't allowed to be crossed but still a bribable Official), even in TNA. He'dve been much better at it than Dixie Carter ever was, imho....
Old NWA is so underrated. You should do an entire series on the NWA era
It was the best organization ever, especially in the 80s. World Class second.
@@KEICRUMBIE no, it wasn't.
I love WCW/NWA 1983-1993 everything was better before Hogan and his goofy squad fuck everything up in 1994-1996, obviously the NWO was awesome (mid 1996-late 1997) then 1998 was just fine, 1999 was meh, late 1999 was god awful and 2000 is just the boiler room of hell and 2001 well... you know what happen in 2001
@A L'Cie-- i grew-up in the 80's and 90's watching WcW/NWA more than the WWF, and i agree with you. While 94-96 Hogan & Co. didn't do WcW any favors whatsoever, they unfortunately started going downhill shortly before he arrived so the Hulkster can't really be blamed for taking advantage of the situation, while i liked the idea of the NWO, it just got too big too fast and should've remained a four to six-man faction. ...

Flair won his 5th world Championship at Starcade in 1987 beating Ronnie Garvin. He defended the belt at Starcade 88 against Luger.
Yeah, I was racking my brain about when did Luger ever hold the NWA belt, and he never did. I can understand Brian wanting to erase Ronnie Garvin's title run from his memory though!
Flex with Lex
@@handsolo1209 Luger did win the vacant WCW World title in 1991 after Flair left for the WWF.
@@martyklestadt6766 I know, but it wasn't the NWA title. The only NWA title he ever had was the US title until 1991 when they gave him the new WCW US title belt.
@@handsolo1209 Correct; I was just specifying. Some might have thought that he never had either one. Glad you knew.
JR really sold Dr. Death kicking out of the double clothesline because of his history calling Dr. Death matches in Mid-South and UWF. Both being from Oklahoma didn't hurt either
So that is why he called him his boy? Cool to know.
Ross is from California.
It’s too bad Steve Williams wasn’t better known among casual fans. He could kick out of anything. From his Mid-South UWF days, here in WCW, and in Japan he had Hulk Hogan and Undertaker level invincibility.
JR was as big a mark for Dr. Death as he was for another guy who was born Steve Williams a few years later

1. Clash of the Champions
2. WrestleWar
3. Chi-town Rumble

Agree
This is a great pick. The match between Steamboat and Flair is one of my favorite old school wrestling matches.
Venomous Nate Flair and Steamboat both had a great 89 (with this feud being the best part of the first part of the year and Flair v Funk being a classic and Steamboat actually gets a classic out of Lugar
David Anderson Ric Flair’s best year was probably 1989. So yeah
In 1989 Flair and Steamboat had a great trigligy of matches. Some say the 3rd match I believe in May of that year was the best. Ironically I believe Flair said that him and Steamboat had many matches that were better but nobody saw them except those in the arena.
I actually watched this live the night it happened! I had heard of Flair/Steamboat but this was the first time I had seen a matchup with these two. And to think of their trilogy in 1989, not counting all the house show matches they did, this was the "weakest" match of the three (the other two being at Clash Of The Champions VI and WrestleWar '89). I put that in quotation marks because "weak" for Steamboat/Flair is STILL better than most matches of today! It was a great matchup in ring and it told a story with great psychology!
This card as a whole a pretty good but only the Steamboat/Flair along with Luger/Windham, Steiner/Rotunda and Road Warriors/Sullivan & Williams still hold up. The other matches were good for their time but definitely feel dated now. Still worth a look! Thanks for the review!
I think the term your looking for is "Least Spectacular" when describing Flair/Steamboat here although personally I'd say Wrestle War personally earns that honor. Either way it's still arguably the best trilogy in wrestling history.
@@princeofstrongstyle6683 Everyone has their favorite from that series. But I agree, it’s one of the greatest wrestling series ever

Ric Flair beat Ron Garvin for his 5th World Championship at Starrcade'87. He retained his title against Lex Lugar at Starrcade'88.
i was about to say that. luger hadn't won the world title until great american bash 1991.
Flair was already champ at Starrcade 88, having beat Ronnie Garvin at Starrcade 87.
Flair pinned Luger, then declared after that Luger would get no more title shots.

In my humble opinion, the Chi-Town Rumble match with Flair and Steamboat is the very best of their series of matches. I have watched it numerous times. Never gets old.
There's just not a wrong answer to this... Wrestle War in Nashville is my pick, but it's totally subjective. I've got no beef with your choice and on any given day, the Chi-Town Rumble match could easily be my pick.

I think Sting inherited the 90's, whereas I think both WCW and WWF tried to make Luger a thing and ultimately failed. WCW's dominance in the Monday Night Wars happened during a time when Sting was on top and squaring off against the nWo. Yes, the WWF guys eventually overtook them, but I think to any fan watching both shows at the time, for a good while Sting was the more tenured and recognized headliner when lined up with the likes of Austin and Rock, but they did inevitably overtake Sting in the pop culture mainstream. While both had mishandled booking and feuds that didn't pay off for them, I think Sting pulls ahead of Luger in relevance. He's got a more iconic look, wrestled better matches, cut better promos (granted, not by much) and just had a bigger presence about him on the global stage I think.
Sting was slightly more important as a whole, although Luger was still important to wrestling like when he showed up by surprise on the first ever Nitro that was HUGE.
Well at this time, Sting was popular because he was a babyface. Luger's popularity started as a heel and only went up when he turned on the Horsemen. As the U.S. Champ from 89-90 was probably one of the best championship runs in the company while some of it was while he was a heel. His pops as a heel were loud.
Now, if the roles were reversed, could Sting had pulled a heel turn? He would still get the pops but I don't think he could of acted like the way Luger did as a heel.
Luger wasn't the greatest wrestler but he had movesets as a babyface like the dropkick or hiptoss or whatever that babyfaces did at the time but he also had the movesets of heels like the begging in the corner, acting like a chicken, more power moves, cheating etc. Think about this as well, Sting best matches in the late 80s early 90 were against Flair, Muta or him being involved in a tag team. Other than that, he was in a lot of duds as a single wrestler. Luger had great matches against Flair, Windham, (well pretty much anyone that was a horseman) Rhodes, Pillman, Hayes, Steamboat, hell he made Hansen look like a million bucks.
In the end, we have to give Luger his props. Dude did some great storytelling as a face and heel and when motivated, he was a great worker. The fans bought into it and I think people realize how bad Luger was when folks started criticizing his work when he came back to WCW when all he was doing was just collecting the checks.
I think being THE face in the whole nWo storyline and getting WCW's biggest ever PPV buy rate is much more than "slightly" more important. WCW could and did survive without Luger. It survived without Flair. It would not have survived without Sting. If he had gone to WWF any time from 1990-1994 then it would have been game over.
Flair vs. Steamboat was the measuring stick! Today when there is a conversation about a new great match inevitably this match will be brought up!

Interesting note, this PPV was held on a Monday night (this was before Sunday was "PPV day" in wrestling), so it was actually opposite WWF's Prime Time Wrestling on USA Network.
1989 was arguably the best year for Ric Flair televised matches. You had the three bouts with Steamboat and the two Terry Funk matches, which were amazing in a totally different way.
Yes I remember I personally thought the best of the 3 was the middle one. I remember that was the April 2 clash of champions card in new Orleans at the Superdome It was best 2 out of 3 fails. I remember they had that card on TBS Superstation. If I remember correctly they wanted to compete with WrestleMania V? That was the card with Hogan vs Savage again if I remember correctly.

The trilogy.
I’m a big fan of 80’s Wrestling Mania. Downloaded after your first ad and was hooked. May have spent a little bit of money on it...
I definitely think Sting was the bigger star in the 1990s. While Luger had some great moments, I think Sting was more consistent.
My favorite Steamboat-Flair match was at Chi-Town Rumble. I think their best match was at The Clash of the Champions. Their weakest match of the trilogy (but still quite good) was at Wrestle War 1989.
Overall Sting was the bigger star. The crow turn and build up to Starrcade 1997 is probably the greatest storyline in pro wrestling history and was WCW's biggest PPV buyrate. Seeing as JR was specifically referring to WCW then it's a no brainer. Sting was WCW's icon.
I always thought Luger was pretty bland. His champ run for the WWF in '93 with the whole "Lex Luger Express" was kinda cringy. Sting was able to reinvent his look to stay relevent. The crow look clicked so well with 90s counter-culture, it was badass.
This. Brian didn’t start watching till the late 90’s so if you can only look back it might seem close. But if you were there during the time period sting was the superstar and lex was just kind of there.
I mean the mere fact of people wanting Sting vs Undertaker.
Sting was WCW in the 90s. very, very consistent through the entire decade
The older I get and the more wrestling I watch, 80s wrestling from the south is just about the my absolute favorite wrestling. 1989 NWA/WCW is a peak year along with 1986!
I really like these 1980's NWA/WCW reviews with their gritty feel and primitive graphics. Hope to see more!
US Champ Luger is the best version of Luger.
Flair vs steamboat is gold. They had a match in the Boston garden and it was the best match i've ever seen. Flair was the heel and steamboat the baby face. Classic match.
JR: Who will control wrestling in the 90s Sting or Luger?
Hulkster :hold my beer
Rock :hold my eyebrow
SCSA: Hold ALL MY BEERS!
@@alihassan-ve3hw The Rock was a late gamechanger though, I would argue The Rock is incredibly important after the 90s, specifically early 2000s.
Steve Austin: hold my beer can
Austin was awesome biggest star of 98- 99 onward, but in the total of the 1990s, He had less control if you consider the whole time period especially Austin 1990-1997 and compare that to the Hulksters,
The Clash of Champions best 2 of 3 falls match is still one of the top 3 matches I think I've ever seen. The WrestleWar match was a disappointment after the other 2.
Best part was funk going nuts attackinh natch
2:46 Look at the adjective “wrestle.”
Need more Classic PPV reviews! I’ve watched all of them already.
When you said we were going to the internet era, I was hoping you would say Cyber Sunday 2007. I feel like it is an underrated show that features one of my favorite rivalries; Batista vs The Undertaker. It also features Randy Orton vs Shawn Michaels, Jeff Hardy vs Mr. Kennedy, and Rey Mysterio vs Finlay in a kind of fun stretcher match.
Need to bring back of version of this to have the fans legit vote and have effect on the show. Idk of you know but those votes actually weren't rigged they weren't allowed to due to some kind of gambling law since fans actually paid with txt fees
I watched this last week, and I felt so weird because of how much the wrestling back then was different compare to today.
Wrestling was so much better than it was today...not really. JCP had the same problems the promotions have today, mostly the complete inability to change, create new stars and think outside the box! They literally booked the promotion around a few guys and used everybody else as an opening act, yeah Steamer and Flair had good matches but they had too many, also Sting and Flair, the Horsemen, RnR vs. Midnight etc. Then Uncle Ted brought in Hogan and booked everything around him, then they had one good idea (nWo) and ran it to the ground. Sounds familiar?
LMFAO!!! Dude I can't believe you did the Scott Steiner "HUH" Lol!
Flair vs Steamboat trilogy will hold up against any matches from any era.
22:09 um excuse me Brian but Flair never beat Luger for the title. He retained it. He did beat Ron Garvin for it the year prior. That’s prolly what you meant.
BigJoe707 if Luger lost the title to Flair, it would destroy his career.
too bad Larry Zbysko should have challenged luger for the title when he had it. Keep Doom tag champions longer. In 1991, they should have had sting beat luger for the nwa title and have sting keep it a year and a half. bring verne gange in to train WCW wrestlers. Have Bockwinkle also come in to train wcw wrestlers too. I wish Bockwinkle was nwa champion in his prime.
Shawn Gross Sting couldn’t beat Luger for the NWA title cause it was vacant.
On your sting/Luger question, Sting was the more significant of the two. Luger, however, was still a notable figure in the 90s.
I'd agree, about Sting over Lex, however, when it comes to "controlling wrestling in the 90s" Well, that distinction just didn't go to either of these "heir-apparent"s.
Twiggie Leon agreed. Really if anyone controlled the 90s and it wasn’t even until late into the decade, it was Steve Austin.
The Clash of the Champions match really got me out of the all-Wwf mode. It aired the same time as Wrestlemania 5 and I remember thinking how superior that two out of three falls match was compared to anything on the Wrestlemania card.
That was the best match I have ever seen to this date! I was watching the Clash live, couldn't afford the Wrestlemania PPV, but it didn't matter. The NWA/WCW put on top notch wrestling!
The best series on CZcams by a mile on wrestling content.

Honestly,i love the whole set of Steamboat/Flair matches.Imho,it gave birth to the Best of...Series of matches. If i HAD to choose though, the first one was the best of the lot. While the third hd the better story, the first had a much better pacing to it.
No, Magnum TA and Nikita Koloff had a best of 7 series 3 years before this.
True enough, but Steamboat/Flair put it out for mainstream audiences. As much as i LOVE Magnum TA(i was a major fan of his growing up),you unfortunately have to have a love of the Mid-Deep South Wrestling to know who he even was.I'm not knocking his and Koloff's series, far from it,i'm just stating that Steamboat & Flair brought more of a Heat to it.While Magnum/Koloff was about National Pride,Steamboat/Flair was about the World Title, something that SHOULD be the Centerpiece of your promotion(i'm looking at YOU WWE!).
@@johnnysizemore5797 - I agree that 1989 WCW was the national stage and many people may not have seen the Crockett stuff. The thing about these series of matches back then though was the stories to them. The matches between Flair & Steamboat were good, but the story that this told and then lead into (J-Tex, Horsemen reform, turn on Sting, etc) was amazing. Now it's just matches (and crappy ones at that with no psychology) and no story. This was a story that happened to have matches and it was awesome.
@Hand Solo - i'm with you 100% with....most of the new stuff(though i DO like the Firefly Funhouse stuff WWE is doing with Bray, and at least AEW is TRYING to make a good product). You see,as a Kentucky boy,i grew-up watching WCW in the 80's-early 90's(i switched to Smokey Mountain after the whole NWO thing, though i DID watch a bit: Mostly the Cruiserweight/Hardcore WWE stuff),so i fell in love with Tag Team wrestling .I'm talking Road Warriors, all the Expresses(Midnight,Rock&Roll,Orient),the Brainbusters(Olie&Arn,though Tully&Arn were OK),The Varsity Club(Rick&Rotunda.Sullivan never was a good Tag guy),heck i even liked Sting&Luger as a tag team!

Flair vs Steamboat is still my favorite wrestling rivalry.
After watching this PPV, I can attest that this show didn't become interesting until the six-man tag as the first two matches were so slow-paced and uninteresting. Furthermore, I also agree that Windham/Luger was great and Steamboat/Flair was an absolute classic. Now all I need to do is go watch the other two NWA World Heavyweight Title matches to see how they each stack up.

Nice review! I agree with you on all of them. Steamboat was a BEAST! He and Flair really were great together in the ring. Honestly, their best matches happened when they were in the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling era. They were younger and much more explosive back then, and they were both just firing on all cylinders in those late '70s/ early '80s matches. Go back and watch them. You'll be a believer!

Dude, Luger took that windham piledriver like a fuckin champ
I think sometimes guys who wrestle the same style have great matches. Benoit vs Angle come to mind.
I thought he was being TOO critical over the Steiner/Rotunda match. The match wasn't the greatest, but it wasn't as bad as he was claiming it to be...
Slight mistake by Brian in this vid, he said Flair beat Luger for his 5th world title, Flair beat Ron Garvin, he also refers to Luger as a former world champion, but Luger had never been World Champion until 1991 at the Great American Bash!
As far as the Luger or Sting thing goes I gotta say Sting. Luger wasn't as good of a performer in or out of the ring imo. Sting had the accolades and the talent to back it up, from his climb up the card to main event w/ Hogan all the way to the last episode of actual Nitro (before Vince bought WCW) when he faced Ric Flair.

As far as Luger vs Sting goes, although Lex was always around the top of the WCW and was slated to be the next big thing during his time in WWF (even though that kinda flopped), I don't think he was ever more over than Sting title runs etc taken away as well. Though much of the time they were put together tagging in eary 90's then being toated as the saviors off WCW when nWo came in and also together in the first red&black Wolfpack. In my opinion Sting wins out!!
Thought the show itself was pretty average. But the Main Event between Steamboat and Flair was an obvious 5 Star Match, just like the other 2 that came after. Like Cornette once said during his rant for Clash of the Champions VI "We all sat down for Steamboat and Flair, because there is no way that they gonna fuck that up."
Also, kudos to Luger. I am normally not a big fan of him, but his Match against Windham was also pretty good. If he has the right opponents (Flair is another good example) he is able to be dragged into a good match.
Most NWA/WCW late 80s PPV event were nothing more then average with too many wrestlers with similar gimmicks, moves and looks....

Lex Luger: Oh, that's cute. *has a 523 day reign*
Thought it was strange for Windham the heel to sell an injury during the match and if you want a master class in psychology the Flair/Steamboat trilogy is it. Flair was in the last quarter of his prime (sadly Steamboat too due to injury) but dropped these classics onto the universe. The first Ric Flair DVD produced by WWE has the Wrestle War and Clash Of Champions match and I pop it in and play those on occasion.
