"Some rise fans think Usagi is an OC" I am BRAND NEW to this fandom, and even I know that Usagi is a real character. By new, I mean that I joined the fandom AFTER the rise movie came out, and I've only watched rise and 2012. Even before I watched 2012, I knew Usagi wasn't an OC. What are these people on?
I also recently did that and I was like “oh what character is that” and saw the OTHER SERIES TAGGED and was like “ohhhhhhhhhhh” like did they not check???
Also decently new to the fandom(also came in after the rise movie) and when I saw people shipping rose Leo and usagi I had to look usagi up because there we NO way that one person’s oc got so popular.

I joined the fandom around the same time through Rise, though I kinda live under a rock and don’t understand a lot of things people do so when I saw in passing a couple of pieces of leosagi fanart my first thought was “I have literally never seen this character before and they are not a turtle from this universe, they must be some sort of popular oc or something because maybe that’s a thing that happens??”

in 2003 version in season 3, when the turtles were seperated and teleported in (seemingly) random places, they are actually facing their biggest fears. Michelangelo was sent in the dimension where all of his brothers (and himself from that world) are superheros with powers and everything, which made our Michelangelo basic, weak, irrelevant. He fears he's not special. Raph was sent on another planet (probably in another galaxy), as far from his brothers as he can possibly get. He fears loneliness and helplesness. Donnie was sent in to the future where he disappeared, leading to Shreder's victory and death of his brothers. He fears consequences of his actions. And then we got Leo. He's biggest fear is himself. His weaknesses and emotions. And he got sent to Usagi's world. As Usagi was his weakness, the person that makes Leo feel the strongest emotions. It kinda feels like a queer coding to me. In early 2000's (and with Disney's supervision because I believe they owned 4kids) they couldn't just say that character in kids or teenage series is gay. So yeah, 2003 Leo- totally gay.

In Fast Forward, Falcon reappears in an episode and Raphael remembers him. So now I think that Raphael got sent to the future.
Donatello being the one to suffer the most out of his brothers is what's especially heartbreaking. Donatello KNOWS the consequences of ones actions, he KNOWS that for every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction. He KNEW what facing the Shredder would possibly do, and he and his brothers did so anyways. And the consequences happened anyways. That has to be incredibly traumatic because he's the kindest, he's the pacifist, he's the gentlest of the four.
THAT'S why he fears consequences. Not because he doesn't want to take accountability nono, he fears consequence because that means having to live with knowing what YOU DID led to that consequence. That sht, will live in his head ALL. DAY. EVERY DAY. And so he'll do whatever he can to avoid that. To avoid feeling like a total failure to the family.
This is showcased incredibly well in the episode "Bad Day", when he kept BERATING himself over the assumed deaths of Casey and April "I should've changed the signatures on the Cell Shell, I should've known they were traceable...." there it is. "I should've, I should've, I should've." Even with Raphael saying through clenched teeth "no one blames you Donnie, you couldn't have known." and then Don retaliates "But I'M the one who led Bishop right to the lair!" with his head low. Don's the type of person to take everything on his shoulders, even when he doesn't need to. And that's why it just SUCKED that he went to such a horrible place.
How is usage Leo's weakness? you mean like he has a crush on usagi so that makes Leo fear it makes him weak?

I'm not trying to come off as telling Rise fans to watch other versions if they don't want to. More just telling people who ship Leo and Yuichi to stop tagging it as Leosagi...and to use Google.

It makes a lot of sense that these two specific characters get along so well cause Usagi is a Samurai and Leo is a great samurai at heart, even if he’s trained as a Ninja.

@misabelrodriguez1163 ninja are assasins, and samurai are kind of like knights and soldiers. Ninja lived and worked outside of what was considered morally right, which contrasts to the samurai that live by a a code that promotes good morals and honorable actions

I have seen this ship so much; I didn’t think Usagi was an OC (never really got into TMNT until Rise) I legit thought he was a Tmnt character until I watched a vid where someone said he “isn’t even from the same IP” when I heard that, I figured Leosagi was a fan made crossover ship that had no bearing on canon.
But knowing that they have interacted before makes me really wish we could have this ship.

I started watching Samurai Rabbit, and Yuichi definitely matches Rise Leo 😂 They're both cocky and think they're the best (until they get humbled), but aren't mean about it and genuinely want to help people. They're also the same age, 16. They'd have a friendly rivalry while simultaneously being impressed by their swordsmaship. Plus I'm pretty sure Yuichi would be the only person who would find Leo's jokes funny.
Miyamoto Usagi and 2003 Leo match so well because they're both serious and very dedicated to their bushido/ninjutsu.

Edit: OHHH QUICK EDIT. You know, if Rise and the Chronicles (of yuichi usagi) have a crossover, think it’d actually be over Yokai? (Yokai are supernatural entities of the japan folklore) Both shows have much of Yokai’s involved too - Theres honestly so many ideas. But I can definitely imagine Rise!Leo and Yuichi fighting alongside each other, that’d be really cool.

but of course, shippers gotta ship. they’ll ship any two characters who breathed the same air, heck they’ll even ship characters who never even met each other. and they’ll say that they were meant for each other. which is weird. because. it should be possible for two people to be very close to each other as friends without them having to worry about people around them shipping them.
yes, it happens irl too. i’m talking from experience and it’s super annoying. i was an innocent little teen girl who happened to be close to one of the boys in my class (mostly because we used to be neighbors, we were in the same class in elementary school *and* in the same kindergarten). of course, at some point, the girls in my class had to make a comment on the close friendship between me and him. that we “should get together”. like no, we’re just friends. stop shipping people just because they’re good friends. imagine being shipped with all of your friends, especially your best friend(s). so annoying.
so yeah. there’s nothing *canon* about this ship. it’s all fan’s interpretations. nothing is set in stone here aside from them being acquaintances and maybe friends too.

As someone from the Rise side-
I was introduced into the tmnt fandom through Rise, so the learning curve was definitely a thing for me. I saw a couple pieces of Leosagi fanart and thought Usagi was some sort of super popular OC that I didn’t understand (there are a lot of things people do that I don’t understand so that wasn’t exactly out of the ordinary). I didn’t start learning more about other tmnt stuff until I ran out of Rise stuff to watch, because I’m very much a fan of the chaotic, fun, bright, creative animation type so I wasn’t so sure something else would cut it. I’m a bit picky, annoyingly enough. Basically, I wish for more Leosagi (specifically with Rise Leo, I love gay boi having a boy to fawn over lol) and am currently passively watching previous tmnt incarnations until hopefully I actively like them too, and I apologize if my existence brought you pain for a bit? Anyway, thanks for the video explaining more of the story for me

I was just watching a bunch of rise clips and tiktoks until I realized I could watch the actual show on Netflix. I saw a few Leuchi/ Usagi tiktoks and I was like “aww he’s adorable I guess that’s a character” and then I found out he was in fact not in Rise

I'm actually working my way through 03 rn. I've had a long journey with tmnt, at first just watching it with my sibling because it was what was on, then taking a peak at 2012 before getting the fuck outta there, and finally rise sparked my love for the franchise again. Rise is probably my favourite because of it's visuals and comedy, but 03 is really bringing in that nostalgic vibe I love. Who knows. Maybe I'll turn into a superfan and read the comics too.
I recommend to read IDW comics and or the original (mirage) comics. If you like like 2003 show than you will enjoy the mirage one (2003 show is basically an adaption of the mirage comics).
I only started watching Rise a few months ago, but before that, I had seen a lot of fanart of Leosagi. I knew he wasn't an oc, but I did think he was a side characters that appeared in the show. I was surprised to learn that he wasn't in Rise at all, but I'm still fascinated by the fact that an *entire* fandom, including me, ships characters that have never interacted (in Rise at least). This is an amazing video, so glad this showed up in my recommendations lol
Wait, is Usagi really meant to be Yuichi's last name in that show? Damn, I thought them having different family names was a reference to the fact that Usagi's son, Jotaro, was legally another man's child. Like, Yuichi was Kenichi's family name or something. That's... dissapointing for many reasons.
Not gonna lie, when I rewatched 03 as an adult, I was lowkey shipping Usagi with DONNIE right up until Leo woke up from his mini coma and Usagi and Don just kinda stopped looking at each other entirely. It was like Leo pulled his brother aside like "I saw him first," lmao. By the end of that arc, I was like "Oh... OH. Usagi's going to be LEO'S special friend. My mistake."
2012... 2012 REALLY highlighted the age difference between Leo and Usagi. Definately couldn't ship it in that version, Usagi was a long suffering grown up having to take care of the world's most annoying child and now also these four angsty teenagers. It really felt like they were drawing a paralell between Leo and Kintaro where Leo had to like... learn to grow the f up over the course of the episodes, which... I mean, that's just 2012 making characters learn the same lessons over and over again, for you.
I've seen some vary interesting and well-written Leosagi fics on AO3 for Rise - I'm less fond of Leochi because... let's be real, Yuichi's got a different personality from Miyamoto, so even under layers of AU-ifying, it's pretty easy to tell which was the basis, and I just prefer Miyamoto. There are overall very few fics out there that take USAGI'S perspective and history into account, some tmnt fans cross pollinate usagi yojimbo but not many, but many of the ones that DO are exceptionally good.
Lol, I am very excited to have understood both the batfamily AND star trek references. Yes, the eye-color thing in "could be tos or aos" fics is annoying as hell. Yes, it's always the blue eyes jumpscare when I've been picturing them hazel for nine chapters.
It's very funny that you started shipping Donnie and Usagi because I've joked about how you could easily come out of the arc shipping the two, you'd just be disappointed for the rest of the series lol.
For the surname thing with Yuichi Usagi, I'm fairly positive that Usagi is still his given name. Like how OG rabbit goes by Miyamoto Usagi, because in Japan they say their surnames first. Also, Yuichi Usagi's aunt calls him Usagi, and I can't imagine an aunt calling her nephew, who she raised, by his last name. LOL

I think a lot of the problems you mention with shipping and ship naming are very obvious to us older fans who have consumed a lot of different TMNT media, but much less so to much younger or those less well-versed in the franchise audiences. I grew up watching the ‘87 turtles and browsing Angelfire sites for fanfic in my teens, but I have also kept up with Turtles media and very much enjoy Rise.
It seems to me that many of the unwritten rules surrounding ship naming conventions and fan fiction etiquette were adhered to much more when fan fiction was less ubiquitous; whereas these days, searching for content specific to a particular iteration or ship-even when the thing you’re searching for is popular-is much more akin to trying to find rare-pair content. Many younger fans don’t know that long standing common courtesies pertaining to the tagging of fan works even exist and simply tag their works according to how others tag. Additionally, fans who have never consumed more than a single iteration of TMNT media have a bit of a blind spot because they don’t experience the frustration of searching for content for “less popular” versions.
I started my TMNT journey with Rise and since then have been working my way back. I finished 2012 and am currently half way through season 3 of 2003. I have watched all the Bay movies and the batman movie, I still have to watch to OG turtle movies. I love all versions of the turtles (except for 87 because I haven't watched but I plan to once I finish 03. I've watched some clips and they are so adorable). I aslo tried to watch the usagi chronicles but I couldn't stand it lol.

I really enjoyed this video and thank you for clearing up things about Leochi & Leosagi, i my favorite is version of them will always be the 03 sense they had the most believable dialogue and i just really enjoyed them interacting with each other, don't get me wrong i adore rise leosagi context but hole tagging problem between the ships and people thinking Usagi is popular oc needed to be addressed and IF nickelodeon brings back across over between two franchises and have our two teenage boys interact I'll be happy and finally have inner peace, also i really enjoyed the video keep up the amazing work!

Honestly this could be all solve if Nick let’s the Rise Turtles just have a crossover with Samurai Rabbit Usagi on Netflix. Though I’m unsure of it happening at least rn since they’re kinda moving on with having the Mutant Mayhem turtles. Though this ship definitely sounds cute with 03 Leosagi and Leochi.
I fell in love with Leosagi thanks to the 2003 version of TNMT. Best version of them as a pair, in my personal opinion.
I do enjoy a lot of Rise fan content with their own Leosagi though due to finding some great creators (and then I fell into the confusion of Leosagi and Leochi because I had no idea who Yuichi was, lol. There's some very good content of that ship too, just wish people tagged correctly).
I'd say the 2003 version and Rise are my two favorite versions of TNMT, in general and not just for shipping.
Rise fan here! I’ve never consumed turtle media before Rise and I can confirm that when I first discovered this ship through Rise fanart I was very confused about why Leo was being shipped with a random bunny OC. Took a while before I worked up the courage to ask who he was and someone explained that it was a crossover ship. As helpful as they were, they definitely failed to convey, this whole situation.
But seriously, that you so much for explaining this entire saga, I absolutely love learning about fandom culture and this was a pleasure to watch
I have a funny perspective over this "rise leosagi" situation, bc I never thought Usagi was an oc (even tho I didnt remember his previous encarnations in TMNT) BUT- I thought this "yuichi" one was an oc, created by the fandom as an interpretation of how they would adapt Usagi in rise.

I didn’t know Usagi is supposed to be significantly older than the turtles, that explains why he looks and sounded so old in 2012 and I did not even know he appeared there.
I don’t think i ship Leosagi mostly because I’m not a fan of his character design, the type of anthro rabbit that I personally dislike. Leo/Yuicihi wouldn’t bother me cause its just another different version/different interpretation of the ships (two cakes!) but after finding out Yuichi is Usagi’s descendant and not Usagi himself, seeing Leosagi (Yuichi) made me think of one of the Avenger movies where Steve Rogers ends up with his late love interest’s niece or whatever

i'd like to say in fandom, the best course of action is just to be specific. Double tagging seems reasonable solution until you are a reader looking for something specific. if you are a writer and are aware of such discrepancy, be prepared to explain a lot or dont make a controversial aspect. i believe all writers must have some boundaries with what they are willing to portray in their works story plotlines and characters. please just dont confuse people by trying to be inclusive. be specific and decisive.
Honestly Leosagi would’ve probably been hinted at a lot more if they put Usagi in the rise show. I know they would’ve if they at least made it to a season 3 or 4. I’m also curious to know how rise Usagi would’ve been like, and wether they’d hint or code Leo (or Usagi) having a crush on the other. I’m certain there’d be some queer coding to it honestly.
Another person introduced to tmnt by Rise here- I thought that leosagi was a tag for all the ships that fell under every universe so sorry about that (especially since I've never had anyone say anything, glad I know now). Also for some reason I feel the need to defend myself as a Rise fan so I will mention that I've seen most tmnt series/movies minus the original cartoon, I'm still working my way through it. But I love all of them so much and hate to see the Rise fandom being unwilling to watch other versions. I will say most other fans I've met have gone back to see at least one other version. Anyways the Rise fans mean no harm, we just didn't know! If I knew sooner I would have been better about tagging, so if I contributed to the annoyance sorry!!!
Great video! I just recently got into TMNT. Saw Rise first, loved it, and then watched 2012, and now I’m in the process of watching both the 03 show and the 80’s show. I was really confused after I watched Rise and then kept seeing people ship Leo with a character who wasn’t in the show lol. I still have yet to meet Usagi in the 03 show, but I’m excited to keep watching!

Oh this explained so much, as someone who has not seen or heard of Samurai Rabbit 😭 I kept seeing things tagged as Miyamoto and Yuichi while scrolling through and I COULD NOT figure out if they were the same character or not
I've been a fan of tmnt since I was super young. But I never had the resources to watch everything, older than 03, even then I can barely remember anything 03. But now that I'm older, and Rise has kicked me back into gear of enjoying TMNT with the resources to watch everything, I'm trying to catch back up.
So I'm super out of the loop with shipping stuff. But frankly I think shipping, no matter WHAT fandom is messy, so go ham within reason. But try to not be /those/ kinds of people. Cause you can never appease everyone. (This is not trying to be controversial. Please don't start any arguments)
I remember the ‘03 TMNT well enough. And yes, that intro does give you a very powerful feeling, though I’m not too sure I’d be able to fight God even if I was on a sleep-deprived, sugar-fueled high backed by awesome battle music. 😹 That had to be my favorite incarnation of TMNT before Rise - I like ‘12 well enough, but I’m not too fond of it for multiple reasons.
The Rise fandom has been really going ham with Leosagi - especially after the movie, because of Rise!Leo’s insecurities, it’s really great seeing Leo having someone on his side as a support outside of his family, a somewhat biased third party since their romantic involvement.
At least with the tagging, it’s not as bad as the BnHA fandom in terms of tagging. Good Lord that place is terrifying.

Gosh how did I first discover Leochi and Leosagi? Well I started out with the Rise fandom after the movie and Netflix’s Samurai Rabbit had already come out so I believe it was through fanart between Rise!Leo and Yuichi
I thought it was cute and decided to look it up on tumblr and within like an hour I was able to put together that it was a popular crossover on Rise’s end and a popular ship with 2003 with Miyomoto originally being his own thing (so whatever those other fans are on to miss that I want some)
But yeah I totally get what your talking about with the tagging confusion, I even used the Leosagi tag with my art for Leochi before realizing how much all that was bugging the Leosagi OGs and switching, it’s a problem that effects all parties and I hope it gets sorted out in due time-
But my final takeaway is 2003 sounds really good and I need to watch it as soon as I finish 2012 because god knows when I’ll get through 87
My favorite version of the TMNT, and the one I grew up with, is the one from 2012.
So the introduction of Usagi conditioned me not to ship them because... His relationship with Leo is more of a teacher/apprentice.
So when I found out that this ship existed my genuine reaction was "¿? ¿?"
My start on tmnt is a bit weird. Technically I got into the fandom via the Rise movie so that's my real starting point; but before that I'd already seen reruns of 2003, the 2007 movie (which was my first exposure ever), 2012 sporadically as it aired on Nick, and the Bayverse films. I was aware of both the 87 show and the og Mirage and IDW comic runs before I got into RIse as well (I got into Daredevil and found out about the comics that way).
Until I got into Rise I never really realized that I was surrounded by tmnt content as a kid lmao. So I guess I'm also working my way back, but with half-remembered childhood memories and stray factoids.
As for Usagi- I'd seen the Rise movie before the series, so when I saw fanart of Yuichi in the Rise tags I'd initially assumed he's a character I'll meet in the series, or a character from previous tmnt versions that didn't make it to Rise and people just made a new design for him (Seen that for Mona and Alopex, for example). A google search later I'd unlocked memories of 03 Usagi and discovered the new Usagi Chronicles series, then I was like, oooohh that's what's up, okay. I was kinda right!
Also, on the 'extras' video included with the Battle Nexus DVD, Stan Sakai, the creator of Usagi Yojimbo series, states that his favorite Turtle is Leonardo.
As a Leosagi fan, I am SUFFERING from Leoichi fans. I hate how hard they double-downed and continue to do so. I rarely see these people even use the alternative ship names, so I've just had to block people point blank if I see "Leosagi" and "Yuichi" in the same post/ fic. I don't care about the age discourse, there are way worse ships that have existed for way longer like who tf cares anymore, and I think it's a pitiful and crappy excuse to steal a ship name and ignore literally all attempts to explain things. I am on my knees begging people to just block and mute the things they don't want to see because it literally makes life SO MUCH EASIER.
Anyway, but the terrible tagging issues have made it so painful to try and find ship content, and at this point, I just stick to following a select few artists and fellow fans for my sanity. I love all iterations of Leosagi, and I really wish I could find more Rise Leosagi content that ISN'T Leoichi in disguise. :')))

How ever tik tok compilations introduced me to the character Usagi who, at first, I thought was an oc, but since he kept showing up in many different art styles I looked up to find as a cannonical character from older versions. I was really looking to watch old shows so just enjoyed it whenever it came across. But having now seen the clips you showed from 2003. Oh yeah, I see it.

I’m a fairly new TMNT fan who first got introduced to TMNT through Rise, but after seeing so many other people in the Rise fandom being so arrogant that *their* show is the *best* one only made me more passionate about being the *opposite* of that and being a Rise fan who has watched a lot of the older versions and does not discriminate when it comes to picking a favorite version of TMNT. I see a lot of other Rise fans who are crazy about ships and practically wear ships like accessories, but i don’t judge anyone. That’s not what my purpose is. It’s to watch the show because i enjoy it, but then also be able to notice if the show has flaws. That’s the main problem with a lot of Rise fans (and a bit of 2012 fans.) Its that they have their nostalgia glasses glued onto their eyes so tightly that they can’t take them off and be able to go, “ hey, i really like this show, but now that i realize it, there are some things i wish were different. “ i strive to be one of those fans. i haven’t been in touch with Rise much because i’m in love with Mutant Mayhem right now and plan to hyperfixate on that for like the rest of eternity but yeah.

I've been trying to dig around for any official confirmation on whether or not Yuichi is his first or last name and haven't really found anything substantial (though if anyone has then please direct me to it). However, I'm very confident that Usagi is still his given name, because that's what Auntie calls him, and I think you can agree that it'd be incredibly weird for her to address him, a member of her extended family, by his family name.
Well, Netflix did a usagi series and rise of the TMNT movie is in Netflix, so, maybe a crossover might happen.

I was really into the idea of Leoichi/Leosagi, and I got the ship name/tagging issue/"is he an OC" thing cleared up pretty quickly from a couple of fan accounts and animatics' descriptions, but the 2012 version REALLY messed me up. I was super confused, because me and my friend were having joke ship wars, and then they looked up the age difference and were like "HA SEE YOU CAN'T SHIP THEM!"
I was confused, because I knew about the 03 version and how popular Leosagi was there, so I was deeply concerned and wondering if "everyone is just shipping an adult with a child??? IS THIS NORMAL???" And I tried to google it, but all I could find was "They're closer in age than normal" and I was like "WHAT DOES THAT MEAN???" This video REALLY helped clear a lot of things up, now I know 03 Usagi WAS a teenager and now I can ship them in peace...

I actually really got into TMNT like a year ago thanks to Rise, I really liked the animation and after a while I liked everything else too.
I have watched the 2012 version as a kid, I liked it but right now I don’t really love the 3d animation so I am not in for the ride.
I have actually started the 2003 version, because people talked about it really good and I was curious, but I am still at the first season.
Right now I am more into the IDW comics, which I am buying the collections to read them.
As a person who is a little into every versions of TMNT I can say that it’s hard to keep up with everything, which is even more confusing with all the shipping thing involved.
I knew of the existence of Usagi for a long time (even before getting in the franchise) but I didn’t know he was potrait as a adult in every version but the 2003 TMNT cartoon.
I started to ship Leonardo and Usagi thanks to the 2003 version because I found the various clips online about it and I was like “This is really good”, then I found out about the whole Rise verision to which I wasn’t surprise (Rise!Leo is everything but straight) but I didn’t know about the show about Usagi Yuichi.
I want to watch this new version of Usagi but I am not really into it, I am not a big fan of 3d first of all and plus I would have prefered something on Miyamoto Usagi (the whole surname thing is still very confusing to me)
I have actually wrote a fanfic on Rise!Leo/ Usagi even if I still hadn’t saw a lot of crossovers between the two, still I love their chemistry and it’s absolutely amazing so I just wanted to do it for pure fun, but it created to me a problem: I don’t really know a lot about Usagi.
To write him I think I took more inspiration from the 2003 version, at least for some aspects and I changed it a little to match more this Leonardo version, so it’s basically an OC which I am annoyed by it, but I don’t have the time to consume everything on Usagi and the TMNT franchise to write something that is just for fun.
Anyway, since my version is everything but Yuichi Usagi, I used the tag ‘Miyamoto Usagi’ because it was simpler, and I didn’t take anything from the Netflix show.
I am still kinda of new (even if it has been like a whole year) to this fandom so there are still many things I don’t know, in the last period I was hoping on a video about the ship between Leonardo and Usagi, to see what people think about it and some of it’s origin story, so thank you a lot for this video! I am incredibly new to the TMNT fandom (like, I’m in by like 2 months) but I’ve been in the Yojimbo/Miyamoto/Yuichi side of things for years. I got the Yojimbo comics a while ago, and watched Usagi Chronicles before I watched anything from TMNT. Because of my weird experience of somehow dodging every single TMNT show, I’ve always shipped Leochi because they were one of the first times I’d seen them shipped in media and I think they’re cute. I had no idea that Leosagi was a ship name for them, because I always was aware of the Usagi’s different names. Cue very confused me searching Leochi on tumblr and only a few things popping up, but when I searched Leosagi there was a flood of Leo x Yuichi
The first time I ever saw Leo and Usagi interact was 2003!TMNT. I distinctly remember watching the whole series on CZcams as a kid, and I thought at the time Usagi was a TMNT character. So imagine my surprise, when I was looking up TMNT stuff on the internet, when I found out Usagi was a CROSSOVER character with his own story and lore.
Still, back then I clung onto any interaction Leo and Usagi had, loving them together without really understanding why. I ate that stuff up, and when I found out 2012 was happening, kid me was so excited. I REALLY wanted to see more Leo and Usagi content, and I was willing to wait for it.
I never got to where 2012!Leo and Usagi interact because I had become tired and dropped 2012!TMNT long before that. Take a wild guess why. 2012 was the first TMNT show I could actually catch on TV, and I do have a small bit of nostalgia there, but damn if that show wasn’t a hot mess.
When I got to Rise, I was sad that I couldn’t get any Leo and Usagi content (maybe I COULD have if Rise wasn’t FUCKING CANCELED-). And then I heard Usagi had his own show, but not really, and hearing about his descendant, I was content to ship him with Rise!Leo because I thought they could actually get along. ‘Oh well,’ I thought, ‘at least Rise gave what it could, and what it gave was awesome’.
And then, Rise fanart had AU versions of Usagi, which I happily indulged in. I even started to read fanfiction for the ship, some of which is very well written. I can see where people who came into the fandom during 2012 and Rise are coming from, but Google does, in fact, exist.
I guess I ship 2003!Leo and Usagi primarily, even though it was never canon. I ship Rise!Leo and Yuichi in the place of something that never was, but ended up enjoying that. And honestly, 2012 bashed all hopes of shipping fuel long before the two interacted, so I clung onto Raph and Mona Lisa as much as I could (and before that, 2012!Mikey and Leatherhead, I thought they were ADORABLE together).
I hope if Rise were to come back and they have Leo and Usagi interact, it’d be a Rise! version.
I absolutely love both leosagi and leuichi (leoichi? I’ve seen both spellings) and the 2 tags is so annoying cus sometimes I’m in the mood for leosagi and sometimes not so when I go and find fan fiction it’s so annoying trying to find a specific one

Aaaah I really liked this video! Great job on it, I recently got in to Rise a few months back and it absolutely rekindled my love for TMNT. Though the only versions I have yet to get into are the 2003 series, and all the comics; other than that I’ve consumed almost all TMNT related media. When I first heard about the Leoichi ship specifically I too thought it was a crack ship until I remembered a familiar rabbit character making an appearance in the 2012 series( to note I haven’t finished ‘12 just only up till S3 and sparsely 4&5) and decided to do some research and found out that the Leosagi is specifically the ship between Miyamoto Usagi and Leonardo Hamato from 2003 as well as the Leosagi comic interactions whereas the Leoichi ship is Rise!Leo and Usagi Yuichi( from the Usagi chronicles show who is the descendant of Miyamoto Usagi). Finding this out I thought it was cute and fun and because of TMNT and this ship I’m actually interested in reading the Usagi comics; even being a new fan to this ship I also feel your sentiment of disappointment and bafflement at the reluctance of new shippers not doing proper research and confusion of the ship name. But I hope those can learn, great video ✌️

Really good video!! My experience with TMNT is really weird because I watched 2012's TMNT up until they went to that farmhouse(?) (but I was kinda young so I don't remember much) and then I went on to not interact with the franchise for years due to ✨boring personal reasons✨ before finally getting reintroduced to it through Rise last year, so I had the very weird experience of being more familiar with some of the concepts of TMNT than an entirely new fan would, while still simultaneously missing a lot of other background knowledge, so I'm like...both a returning AND new fan? ...Point is, I didn't really know shit about Usagi, his history with the TMNT franchise, or leosagi/and or leochi beyond having seen some fanart and knowing it was a crossover ship that had some roots in prior versions of the series (though I did NOT know just how far those roots went lmao). So uhm yeah very educational especially for people trying to play catch-up like me 👍
Also, as a general fandom girlie, I get the sense that the double-tagging stuff likely stems from people trying to get their stuff seen by the people who don't know that there's an issue with the tagging at all-so that if someone searches up "leosagi" while really meaning to look up "leochi", people's content will still be seen, that way it can get the proper recognition and not get lost to a tag most people don't think to check or even just consider the existence of.

I think the biggest reasons why Rise has gotten so popular was because of the movie and how badly treated the show was by the company and the fans (at first) and when Viewers (new and old) watched the movie they gave the show a chance and started to see how good the series really is they’ve been putting their fanwork on blast hoping that Nick will see their error and at least give the show a season 3
And of course when a show becomes popular and trending, ships really start to sail not on boats but cruises

So... Rise kind of totally 100% just made an entirely new universe. There are new antagonists, new allies, new settings, AND YES, slightly different main characters. (Slightly is such an understatement but they still have their core character traits so idk 😭)
This new take on TMNT is great, I love it dearly, but it is so far from the original works that people think it's... better?
To make things make sense, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had a specific demographic: Kids. Not tiny tots. Kids. (cuz shit gets dark when your plot is rushed by your network goddammit Nickelodeon you stole something that could've been so much more because you're so far up SpongeBob's ass)
Since it was for kids, these guys watching the show were likely growing up with it, unaware of the legacy
You know these kids are on the internet now and all we do is go to war so that's what they're gonna do when someone insults their show, which was... a lot of people. Additionally, a lot of people identified with the characters, especially with Donnie being canonically autistic and Leo being a seemingly egotistical asshole with an inferiority complex
We all know if we love a show we will go to great lengths to justify its existence to the haters, and that's what they did.

Not just Leo but the overall show. Like someone did a whole video on how Gay ROTTMNT is. So let’s get a season 3 so Leo can properly get introduced to Usagi and they can have a proper relationship!! Also for some reason I ship Rise Leo with Usagi more then any other versions of Leo and they haven’t even met. And I’m not really sure why I like the overall ship when I was introduced to the duo in 2012 and they are mad at each other most of the time in the crossover.

Honestly rise's version of Leosagi annoys me because they never interacted or they are not even canon to each other. Usually this doesn't bother me, I love crack ships and rare pairs too. But because 2003 leosagi is a bit ship and actually interacted, shippers now treat rise leosagi wish the same importance. Or that they will get along canonically just as much.

After completing the series, definitely feel as though that is one of the darkest episodes in it. Loved it though, really loved that whole thing with seeing everyone do different adventures in various dimensions. I called Leo seeing Usagi, it was the most obvious thing & so happy he did. I went into the series knowing the fans shipped them but all I saw of those two was when they crossovered in 2012 & I didn't understand why people shipped them from that. Now I feel maybe working my way backwards wasn't the right call, started at Rise & then kept working my way back.
Kinda wish I started on 03, sprinkled in 87 throughout my entire viewing of everything else as I moved forward because everything is bingeable but 87 is something I can only take like 2-4 episodes at a time & I'm someone that loves cartoony antics, it's just I need it in small doses. I'm only 10 episodes into 87 & I started it like a week ago so it's slow going. I ended up skipping that segment in this video actually, now that I know everything that happens in 2003, I feel like I'll be disappointed with Usagi in the 87 series but figured I shouldn't spoil myself anyways. Absolutely adore those two interacting in 03 & wish we got more of it.
I'm not a shipper, never have been, I'm more of the mind of, let the characters be with whoever makes them happy & support them through it, unless it's creepy or uncomfortable. I don't like adults with kids/teens, DUH! Anyone who does, why??? No wait, please DON'T answer that. Also, no family with family like the whole creepy brother crushing on his sister troupe in anime disgusts me, it even happens in one of my favorite anime & it annoys the shell out of me. As long as those lines aren't crossed, it's fine & I can enjoy a good relationship, it's just not what I'm there for.
After seeing Leo & Usagi interact in the 2003 cartoon, I'd be happy if those two got together or stayed as friends, as long as they have a bond, it's all cool. Leo does need a pal so it's nice seeing those two interact. Speaking specifically of the 2003 version by the way, not overall considering he is an adult in other versions & Leo being friends with his adult version is fine, just not more than that because age difference. This is a whole discussion I had with a friend about turtles crushing on adult April, that friend tried arguing how turtles age & I had to remind them that they're mutants & if we're going off the rules the mutagen tends to run by, at least in 87, they did mutate with human DNA so the turtles would probably age more similarly to a human than a turtle so turtle maturity doesn't come into play.
I'll admit it, I am a Rise fan, it's the first iteration I watched so I guess that's why it stuck with me. I mentioned I like cartoony antics earlier, Rise has a good balance, I can easily get that more zany, cartoon feel I like from it but without being overwhelmed. It's short so it's easy with the re-watch, I like the other iterations but I don't think I could just easily go back into watching them the same way I can with Rise. Yes, it's my starting point so of course I'm bias but I am in my 30's so I grew up knowing about the franchise my entire life, just assumed it wasn't for me but Rise had been on my list of shows to try out for years now so I gave it a go & found so much I adored about it & was starving for more when I finished which is why I was like, looks like we're taking on this massive monster of a franchise. I have friends that warned me about it & then I had to remind them that I'm a Detective Conan fan, I got this handled. First got into Detective Conan in 2011, spent four months watching the series & getting caught up in the movies, specials, & OVAs. As for TMNT, started at the beginning of May of this year, now it's the end of May & I've seen Rise, 2012, 2003, the 1990 movie, the Batman crossover, & 10 episodes of 87. If anything, 87 is what will slow me down a whole lot. Balanced this all in a busy month of doing so many other things too so it's not the only thing I did all month. Hey, I started binge watching in 2003 when my mom bought season 1 of Stargate SG-1 on DVD, I've learned how to balance shows with a busy life.
Sorry, went a little off there. Wanted to speak from the angle of a Rise fan, when I saw fan comics & stuff regarding the ship, I didn't automatically assume OC, I did lightly look into it & found out at least some of where it came from, I knew crossovers existed & that's about it & was anticipating seeing it in the series & wow, I was disappointed seeing the 2012 crossover. I loved the turtles being a little goofy in a world that's more bleak but I just did not understand what the whole fan excitement was. When I watched 2003, I thought, "oh, so it's these two they all got it from, I get it, those guys are cute together. Alright then." Didn't know the full extent of everything until viewing this video, I had it saved to watch after I finished 03 because I wanted to make it through that series with zero spoilers which was tricky, was spoiled on a few things but for the most part, I was blind enough going in & enjoyed the experience greatly.
Guess not having much to take in as a Rise fan is what pushed me to watch everything else & gotta say, re-visiting Rise after you know so much more is so great because I catch the things that went over my head the first time. Heck, I think I totally missed Mikey saying "I think my trench coat idea is better" in the episode where Raph disguised as a mascot to buy a new robe for Splinter but then seeing how big the trench coats are in the past, aside from 2012 that made fun of it sometimes, then going back to Rise, I heard that comment & laughed, it's like having new jokes now which might make 87 more worth the effort of watching if it helps me pick up on more jokes Rise did. Having only Rise is like eating a good flavor of frozen yogurt, but having Rise again after seeing other iterations is like putting lots of fun toppings on that frozen yogurt. Any Rise fan too close minded to not watch the other stuff is missing out.
I know I talk too much, sorry if you actually read this far, I can go on & on talking about whatever & turtles kinda took over my brain this month, even when I was busy with other things such as my sister's wedding, I couldn't stop thinking about turtles. Oh by the way, love the idea proposed at the end of the video, even if it is an impossibility, I'd totally want to see this. Ugh, I just want more Rise so dang bad, why the shell did Nickelodeon have to screw it over???

You really have been delving into TMNT. I haven't touched on it since recently with the crossover with the power rangers that I didn't know about lol
My first interaction with TMNT was in 2012 which i liked sm that i went full fangirl and started investigating until i found the '03 version on youtube and devoured it. That was back then, now, 10 years later i got turtle fever again and am now rewatching every show and movie, so I'm only missing the 90's movies and to finisgh the '87 one (which is fucking longer than One Piece :)
In other news, i've always thought that '03 Usagi and Leo are the best friendship ever and love them dearly. I found out RiseLeo was shipped with this new Usagi version thanks to pinterest and although i found it cute i was so confused bcz i did NOT know that Netflix came up with Samurai Rabbit. Learned a lot from this vid. Love it!
So I joined this fandom because of Rise. I adore Rise, it's wonderful, it's amazing, it's life changing. I felt pretty called out by some of the things that you said (ie not watching other Turtles shows (I'm not ready to let go yet)), but there was never a time when I thought Usagi was an OC

I only watched TMNT 2012 before Rise and with Leo and Miyamoto interactions in TMNT2012, I didn’t truly understood the all shipping thing between them. As a Rise fan, I knew the existence of the Yuichi’s serie, and the all « personality match » thing between Rise Leo and him, so I assume it was also that. Anyway, I would like - somehow - apologize for the « taking the ship » you know what I mean 😅. Like others Rise fans, we just wanna see our show get unpaused, but I assumed there’s people who went overboard 😅

I think I’m actually the only one who doesn’t ship Leo and Usagi. Even in the 2003 show I took Usagi saying “brother” to Leo as literal. Ever since I only say them as best friends.
Just liking their friendship is just as valid as shipping the two.

I'm the Rise fan that watched @ least one season of other tmnt series. I watched the Chronicles after, and didn't like it as much as rise xD I think before I watched I had some idea of the existence of Usagi, but I don't remember.
I'm surprised that other Rise fans thought Usagi was a famous OC when I saw the existence through tmnt content, like related searches or whatever xD

Oh man. I've been shipping these two since 2011 and back then it was pretty much considered a rarepair in the fandom? Like. It was me and like four other people on tumblr writing fic, creating art, etc. Some big name fans would draw them occasionally but that was uncommon. Also back then the Age Discourse was not a thing. Like just. No one even mentioned it. So that's been. Interesting to watch rise up out of nowhere in the last decade. I am glad for you newbies though! Im just starting 03 tmnt bc i saw the famous sword gifting clip!! It melts my heart every. Single. Time. And as someone who's first iteration/franchise was 2012 tmnt i understand your pain when it comes to the Many issues of the show. Personally i love both leosagi and sliderbunny (thats another ship name besides leochi isnt it cute?!?) And omfg i am so looking forward to the new upcoming comic though i feel i need to finish reading both idw tmnt and usagi's comic even though i have been spoiled on both hshsjsj. I just want to consume every bit of information on these silly characters bc i am not mentally stable😁

I completely understand the frustration with people thinking usagi, because it is frustrating but as someone who was new to the fandom I actually thought he was an oc too 😭😭 it wasn’t out of avoiding older tmnt content, rather I just didn’t know bc I was new :D ! I just wanted to put that out there to let yk that a good amount of ppl were also probably just clueless like me without any ill intent

The OC thing is funny to me because, at least from my experience interacting with many fans at the time, back when the 2012 series was still going on, I think it was fairly early in the series actually, a person on deviantart decided to create an OC they could ship with Leo, drawing them interacting with the other characters so much that I remember people thinking that it was an official character that had gotten leaked and that was going to be Leo's love interest (I specifically remember some people hating on her because they preferred Karai or because they thought it was meant to be Monalisa and therefor bad that they took her away from Raph). Again, maybe that specific event wasn't as universal as I remember, I just know I saw it everywhere to the point the artist had to say that it was just an OC, and I find it funny that people thought Usagi was somehow an OC, an inversion of this situation lol

I honestly thought people were shipping rise leo with a “rise” version of 2003 usagi cuz I genuinely had no idea the usagi chronicles existed and I thought 2003 was the only series usagi appeared in. (2003 and rise are the only ones I’ve watched completely and have only watched about the first half of 2012)

I watched the 2012 tmnt but I don’t remember much from it cuz I was like 7 or 8 when I saw it. So I’m kinda fairly new to tmnt as a whole. So as a result when I saw an artist I’ve been following make usagi and Leo ship art I thought “is this an oc?” But luckily I just immediately realized he was from the show as soon I as the tags. Still kinda embarrassing on my part tho💀💀
As a Rise fan, I came here for context on what all the Leosagi stuff was because I kept getting the occasional fan art for it and was very confused on who this guy was, and why does everyone seem to know him. I now have the context thank you 🙏🙏
Also, I've seen Mutant Mayhem, Rise, '12, and '07 and I was pretty much going to leave my Turtles canon content there, but now with all I have learned, I will watch '03 Turtles, because wholesome friendship is wholesome and I am now on the they should add Usagi to Rise bandwagon ✨✨
