  • John Schneider's first draft without Pete Carroll by his side is now in the books, as he adds 8 new rookies to Mike Macdonald's first roster as head coach of the Seahawks.
    How'd he do?
In this episode I'll give you my overall grade for the ENTIRE class (which includes 10 total players) as well as 5 overall takeaways, and what I think some of these moves might mean in the big picture.

Knight played on bad teams with bad coaches in a weird 4-2-5 scheme yet led the nation in tackles. Lots of upside with good coaching. And we got an extra pick by going with him.

Love the draft. The Hawks will give Geno more protection and see how he will progress next year. The trade to get Same Howell was a secure blanket in case Geno injures. They hope that Geno will have more time to find his targets. With Brian Grubb play-callings, the offence will be excited to watch next year. The defence with young and explosive players will be challenging for the opponents facing Mike Macdonald confused schemes. Go Hawks!!!

Always love your take, it’s thought out and reasonable. I have to take a jab at all the people who absolutely insist we draft a QB… love seeing you all whine. I also want to point out that everyone used to say “Pete just loves to draft CBs” well well well.. Pete is gone and John still took 2 CBs… so maybe Pete wasn’t responsible for all those “bad” picks after all. Maybe someday we’ll know but for now that’s all just speculation. I’m happy with this years draft. We’ll see how it pans out.

As you and Dan and others have said, there's folks in that building who have deeper knowledge than any of us internet nerds do, and they obviously like who they picked and see good things in their current roster. Experts always say you draft for potential/upside. If you draft a finished product it is probably in the 1st rd.
If Mike sees Knight as a ball of clay he can mold into a "Mike" LB I'm good with that. Anybody tripping about the trade back are the same people who were mad we didn't have a 5th. Anybody tripping about the 7th rd pick, take a walk.

My take on Knight is, that the motor this young man has, the willingness to make a read and go get it, it's unteachable and more important to them than the more polished skills of the other guys they passed on.
They can coach him up, make him more polished, but they can't give those guys they passed on, the attitude, the "dog in the fight" that he already has.

Like.last year, this draft, I liked the picks but we will see how it all plays out. I believe our first two picks will be starting and immediately contributing to the team. The rest of our picks, I believe will be a work in progress. I really hope they will pick things up quickly and grow into great players with a future in the NFL. Days 1 & 2 = grade A & day 3 = B. I recall 99.9% of pundits disrespecting BWags & Russ class as worst draft of the decade.
Saying both Bwags & Russ wud bust as were 2 small & 2 slow & wud be cut before pre-season.
I think new day 3 star CB's can be found like Sherman & Byron Maxwell
    &
New day 3 LB's like KJWright & Malcom Smith
    &
    New day 3 OL's like Sweezy & G.Fant.
JS has a good record of finding unpolished gem's on day 3.
Most vital to note is that we used our R2 on Big Cat a top 10 & top 20% experienced nfl pro bowl DT to teach BM2 over next 2-3 yrs.
We also used a R4 (or R7 per Condotta) on Sam Howell who is already better & younger than Nix & Penix & Rattler.
Sam's stats after 17 games are better than Josh Allen after 17 games (eg TD to INT ratio).
We also get 3 guys back from IR who hardly played in rookie seasons
    R4 DL Cam Young
R5 DL Mike Morris (OL award winner)
R7 KR/RB Kenny Mac are effectively red shirt rookies in this class
    &
Expect huge 2nd yr Boye Mafe type leaps from Derek Hall & Olu, (Mafe was very weak in Rookie yr then exploded over a 7 game stretch in yr 2).
    R2 OLB Derek Hall
    R5 Oluwatimi.
For some southern boys from hot humid climates, it can take 1 - 3 yrs to settle into NFL's Stormiest Rainiest Windiest City, huge miles away from home sweet home & momma's nice cooking & sweet love.
This is really a 13 man class.
With 5 clear potential stars in
    DL Big Cat Leo W,
    QB Sam H,
    DL BM2 (a potential AD99/Mike Bennett hybrid),
    OCG C.Haynes, (a potential Unger/Hutchison hybrid)
    DL Mike Morris
    &
    my Prof brain thinks
some stars will be found from day 3, I recall most 12s saying Shermans & Maxwell KJW & Dissly & Sweezy's & Unger were wasted picks. I recall most 12s voting in online polls saying those picks would be busts except Unger, who they said should have been taken in R5-7.
    I have a good feeling about 5,
    Multi-skilled AJB,
    &
Superfast boys Nehemiah P & DJ James
    &
Strong boys Satuoa L & Jerrell etc.
Time will tell & we will know more after the pre-season games.
Keep praying 12s, its how the Chiefs fans ended 50 years of hurt.
If we get only 1 all-pro star & the rest fail, then we had a great draft.
Lord willing, we will recruit more than 1 star.

I certainly hope I'm proven wrong and we get some solid starters out of this group, but it seems like the team is going to be depending on the coaches a LOT to coach these guys up, as well some of the guys from the previous couple drafts who may have regressed last year.

In all reality most of those late round guys probably aren’t going to develop into starters, because most players in the late rounds don’t develop into starters. Really early in the draft process someone wrote an article about Knight being a fit with Macdonald, it wasn’t completely out of left field. Might have got him at #136 or later but we don’t know that. Thing about this particular draft is we aren’t all that familiar with what works for Macdonald. We haven’t seen what the new priorities are for years and years like with Carroll, and we don’t know what they’re hearing about other teams interest. Well, we actually have quite a few options out there, first off they will be moving Dremont Jones back to his original position as DE, Both Byron Murphy and Leonard Williams can play DE and dominate. Plus you still have Mike Morris, Derick Hall and Darrell Taylor as your true DE's. But now with Macdonalds scheme, it will be interesting to see how he uses Uchenna Nuwosu and Boye Mafe. We will be fine. Remember last year in the first half, the Hawks were one of the better teams in the sacks category and now we got some more talent

@@danielostrowski9796When Uchenna went down things went south fast. Taylor is a a serious liability against the run. Hall was ok against the run but showed nothing in the pass rush. I understand that Hall was a rookie and may have had an injury. It will be interesting with the new coaches and the new schemes how players get used.
Going into the off season I wanted them to fix the run defense and the offensive line. I think the run defense and the passing defense will be better. The O line is still a big question. Cross should be better in year 3. I hope Lucas will be healthy this year. We brought in Fant as insurance. Olu has only started 2 games in his rookie year behind a weak starter. Right guard should be better with Bradford starting 10 games as a rookie and the round three draft pick for UCon. Left guard Is an aging Tomlinson or one of the right guards. I think our biggest draft success, though it remains to be proven, was “drafting” a new coaching staff. The previous staff was flat out awful (slow to adjust, undisciplined etc.), starting with Pete. His inflexible fingerprints were all over our roster and our predictable playbook on both sides of the ball. Why, for example, when so many teams focused on offense in the draft (as that seems to be where success in the playoffs is trending) did we have to focus so much on defense (which was Pete’s side of the ball) and the trenches? Because PC’s defense was terrible and Pete and John have been shopping at Scubs-R-Us on both sides of the line for years (esp. the O-line). Mike MacDonald and company will get it right, though it may take some time, as we’ve also GM’ed ourselves into a bit of a corner with cap space and are still trying to extricate ourselves from some very bad roster moves (like giving up a king’s ransom for Adams). But the focus early on in building from the inside out is refreshing to see, and a good start for the new regime.

I always felt you should focus on the first 5 picks we will see exactly who will make it next year. And we got hosed on Howell.

What are you talking about Viens? Your take is the anti truth about what happened on the third day. On day three they just basically filled the depth chart and none of those guys were good testers as a whole. Absolutely none of them. None of them had really any upside to them at all. Pritchett ran a good 40 time but has no ball skills, no change of direciton ability, and no ability to track the ball. The Ras score of the guys collectively chosen on rounds 4-7 was around 5. They drafted a blocking 250 lb TE in the fourth were there was some starters at multiple positions available with upper end ability. The fact they drafted all right guards and one tackle with position flexibility is unacceptable especially with bortolini and van pran sitting there. Bortilini couldn't be more perfect for their scheme and was one of the best testers of all time in the combine at center. The fact they didn't draft a Quarterback for the third year in a row after trading a franchise quarterback is unacceptable especially what the talent looks like today at Quarterback next year. This is why 6 were chosen in the top ten. Whos prepared to watch Geno Smith at QB for the next three years? I don't know if I can watch another 6 games and maintain interest honestly speaking form the heart. The fact they didn't take a flyer on Will Levis last year instead of picking Derrek Hall who has shown nothing is beyond me. Will Levis has all the traits that John Salivates for and whose traits are so rare to find in the draft and come around every 4 years or so. All Will Levis did is throw 4 touchdowns in his first start on a team devoid of playmakers and looked good doing it. What would it have taken to trade up to the top of the second round to select him a third and a fourth? Two fourths and a fifth? I would trade this entire 3rd day, a 3rd and the second round pick to select him. This team is missing serious up and coming stars and is getting harder and harder to watch. More and more I'm starting to think this team needs a fresh start completely and instead of symbollically ripping down the pictures of the past need to cut actual ties with it and fire schneider. Pratt was also drafted by Green Bay btw. So please stop telling me Schneider is in the Green Bay mold of always selecting Qbs when he has only selected 2 in 13 years. Greenbay is in the Greenbay mold. Why are the seahawks trying to hit singles in the late rounds and fill roster spots with special teamers? Those rounds are where you swing for the fences for traits for guys to be superstars who are cheap and give extreme value to the cap. I think that they did try to seriously to make a move for Penix and I don't think grubb would have taken the job knowing that Sam Howell and Geno Smith would be his QB room with no real way in the future to bring in upper end talent at the most important position in football. Evaluation is too good now of days and you're simply going to have to overpay (in cap or draft capital) to get a great QB now of days. John needs to stop trying to get his nut up and just pull the trigger on a guy he feels strongly about. If that guy was Penix he should have made it happen and done what was necissary to secure him. They did a poor job of evaluating and managing the Qb position. All geno smith is does is keep you in the middle (purgatory) of the nfl which makes you good enough for a first round playoff exit but not bad enough to get a top talent especially at qb. They should have saved money and started drew lock. atleast we would have gotten one of those qbs. Hell, maybe drew lock would have torn it up he definetley is more boom or bust. I almost would have signed a college offensive guru at offensive coordinator and traded a bag of footballs for justin fields. I would have centered my entire team around the run and defense and that would have equated a tough team to beat especially in the playoffs. How would you stop Walker III, Charbonett, and fields in the running game especially with QB designed runs. Thats 2500 rushing yards easy especially with more misdirection and trickeration. This transistional period just got longer and we are now pinning all of our hopes on Grubbs genius mind and a unkown young Quarterback emerging from no where this upcoming year in college football. The Lombardi trophy seem aeons away and we're just stuck with this mediocre team. Yeah John didn't mortgage the future, or take any big risks but I believe this team needed some STRONG moves to bring us back to glory.

Just because "it's their job" defense, it's implying the player(s) they took are our best pick per our needs. I think we needed a LB & IOL more than a DL, but they took a DL first. So taking a LB in Rd 4 is ok, but they should have traded #118, not #102, where we could have had Cedric Grey instead of Knight. That was the BIG MISTAKE. So expect the Seahawks going after a QB & LB in 2025 Draft. 95% of all Draft picks from the 4th Rd on are Rarely starters. We took Robinson, Eskridge, & Taylor who we never needed or we took them in Rds they were NOT needed = Wasted Picks. Every team makes wasted picks. Time will tell if JS knows what he is doing. I expect JS to be Fired if the players he doesn't get some Pro-Bowlers soon. So far JS is not looking very good.

also saying to just trust the seahawks staff when it comes to tyrice knight is a logical fallacy by the way. Appeal to authority is a major logical fallacy. I've noticed that the fans are usually right when it comes to picks because we have also watched a lot of film collectively and have pretty good intuition when it comes to finding stars. It seems when I've been really happy with a pick they've usually turned out pretty darn good, aka D.k. Metcalf, tariq woolen, witherspoon, russell wilson. I can't remember the last time I was upset with a pick where they turned out to be amazing. Day 3 just seems to me like a whole lot of tedric thompsons and lano hills at the end of the day. I hate when they go away from value and try to stick with only there evaluation of players or try to find need. I feel like tyrice knight was a pick to shore up run defense that languished from a linebacker standpoint at the end of the season. This team needs difference makers that move the needle especially cheap difference makers with the salary cap situation not being in the best of shape in the next couple of years.

While at first I was angry with the picks once I started checking out the highlights of the players i could see why seattle picked all of them. We need to stop and understand people can't have it both way. Either seattle fixes the line of scrimmage or seattle grabs these sexy picks and the line of scrimmage isn't fixed for another year.. Seattle picked players who are physical plus intelligent with upside and mostly it was guards one of seattle major weakness on offense. A few weeks ago if people found out that after the draft seattle got is one of the best defensive tackle in the draft, one of the top guards, a linebacker with upside, a tightend, two more olineman and two cornerback who were top players in the SEC. They would ve been ecstatic but it's like the players they heard of is supposedly better when honestly the players seattle have drafted hasnt had a chance to show how good they are. I rather wait and see how good these players are when the preseason starts. I trust Macdonald and his eye when it comes to linebacker and grubb/huff and there eye on olineman. seattle also grabbed some good UDFA who will probably be on the 53 man roster. Let's see what happens in Sept and go from there.
