This is very early Depeche Mode. At this phase of their career, their music did definitely have a joyously poppy bounce to it, thanks to the synth-work of founding member Vince Clarke. He was only around for the first album, but his reputation for synth-pop hooks is evident in his later work with Yaz & Erasure (2 other 80's bands you've reacted to).

This was one of their first singles, in 1981. In the video, you'll see Vince Clarke, who was a founding member of Depeche Mode before moving on to form Yazoo and then finally, Erasure. Yes, he helped form THREE classic synth pop bands. While you're exploring the earlier, more pop songs from their discography, I recommend gems like "People Are People", " Everything Counts", and "See You". Other great 80s songs of theirs, with a darker edge, include " Black Celebration", "Behind The Wheel, "" Strangelove", and "Never Let Me Down Again". Then when you're ready to venture into early 90s Depeche Mode, you can't go wrong with " Personal Jesus", "I Feel You", " Walking In My Shoes", and "In Your Room".

This 1981 song was their second radio hit. Their first one was "New Life," also from 1981 and the first song of theirs I ever heard. Early Depeche Mode like this sounds really good with early Orchestral Manoeuvres like "Enola Gay" (1980) and "Electricity" (1979). Another bright synthpop single was the Human League's 1981 "The Things That Dreams are Made Of."

"Just Can't Get Enough," was a Top Ten U.K. hit, and if you notice you'll see a young Vince Clarke there. He was the main songwriter for them, he left Duran Duran to join Alison Moyet and called themselves Yazoo, which you have already played some of their records, then they split and he teamed up with Andy Bell to form Erasure. he definitely had the Midas touch, all his songs were gold.

This is from their first album "Speak & Spell" from 1981. This song was written by Vince Clark who left after the release of this album. Clark went on to form Yazoo and Erasure respectively. Other songs from Depeche you would like are "Strangelove" form 1987 and "Enjoy The Silence" from 1990.

You can credit Vince Clarke for the upbeat aspect of the song. That trend continued when he left the band and formed Yazoo and then Erasure. Martin L. Gore Penned Tora Tora Tora from the same album as "Just can't get enough" and you can see the very different styles in music and the path that DM was heading towards from Vince's departure.. And I know most may not agree with me but A broken Frame is tied with Sofad As my favorite DM albums.

Depeche Mode is my ALL TIME favorite band. I first heard them in the early 80s in a record store and the song “Everything Counts” was playing. I asked some rockabilly dude “who is that?!?” I’ve loved them ever since and got to see them live in Houston in 1986. “Precious” is a completely different vibe from the mid 2000s. So many great songs. There is an excellent documentary that came out a few years ago about their eclectic dedicated fan base from all over the world. It’s called Spirit in the Forest I believe. Songs I love

So fun to watch people reacting for the first time to this song, it was from their first album, really big hit.
At this time they were 4, didn't found a drummer so they decided to put a big tape recorder playing the drum parts on stage to show people: the drum is not a drummer, so only the drum machine (tape recorded), 3 guys on keyboatds and the singer.
It was a revolution, Depeche mode was really to the new wave synth pop like for example Nirvana was for the grunge.
The main composer (Vince Clark) left the band and made Yazzo (you should react or probablu know "Don't Go"), so the next membre to replace him was Alan Wilder, and with Martin Gore they bring a new dimension to the band, less fun but amazing in creation.
At the end of the 70's synthesizers were not considered as real instruments, it was the first band to show that the ones who thought that were wrong.
Since the beginning, Andrew Fetcher was there, sadly passed away recently.
The singer Dave Gahan, had a lot of addiction problems , but his voice, his charisma makes him one of te best performers on the shows (he had to do it because as the other couldn't move on stage behind keybords it was a part of his job to make the show ).
The more they were big, the more the show were too, now thaey added more instruments.
The "happy" songs are quite rare, they didn' sing "just can't get enough" for a long time because it didn't match with the dark way of their most dongs.
Now, they still play it, but, even if it's the beginning, it dosen't really show what is Depeche Mode.
For some another big synth happy catchy song I could recommand "Master and servant", but my favorite will always be "Never let me down again", especially in live, where you can really feel how this band is so important in music history.

Depeche Mode as a group underwent a number of different phases. What was going on in the band members' personal lives had a great effect on the styles of music they recorded. "I Just Can't Get Enough" was part of the bands 1981 debut album, "Speak And Spell" (the album title may have been inspired by an early computer toy that helped young children to speak, spell, and eventually to read).
Vince Clark was a member of the group at this time, but left shortly after the album was released. Clark drifted on to a number of groups, including Yaz/Yazoo, Bronski Beat, and eventually, Erasure.

He was never in Bronski Beat. He created a band called The Assembly after Yazoo, but he abandoned it after 2 years of very little output. He also didn't drift on to any other groups. He founded and was the main man in every group he was ever in, including DM.

These are the beginnings of DM, when there is a strong authorial imprint of Vince Clarke, who composed most of the songs at the time, but left shortly after (he was in Yazoo/Yaz - The Assembly and he has been in ERASURE since 1985). DM then sounded different, on the contrary, the simplicity and typical disco 'catchy' melodies were transferred to Erasure's work.

Definitely a rabbit hole you need to go down. Gotta hear "People are people," Personal Jesus," Master and servant," "Blasphemous rumors," "somebody," and World in my eyes." There are so many more songs. Great group. RIP Andy Fletcher

This song always makes me smile - mainly because how it was used in the 1988 comedy classic film DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, in the disco/nightclub scene. You really should consider reacting to that movie, starring Michael Caine, Steve Martin and Glenne Headley - so dang hilarious!

Since you love Spandau Ballet and Depeche Mode, did you know that Spandau Ballet started out as synth-pop? You have to listen to Spandau Ballet's 1980 hit "To Cut a Long Story Short". Former Depeche Mode keyboardist and songwriter Vince Clarke said that that song inspired him to write "Just Can't Get Enough".

This was one of their first hits. The original lineup, featuring Vince Clark, who left shortly after to form *Yaz* aka *Yazoo* with Allison Moyet. Once they had a hit, he left and formed a NEW band/duo called *Erasure* with vocalist, Andy Bell! *Erasure* had a number of hits in the mid to late 80’s.
That said, check out *Situation* by *Yaz* and *Chains Of Love* by *Erasure*.

He did 2 albums with Alison Moyet and then had a 2 year project called The Assembly (supposed to be a different singer on each song) that only produced two singles, the 2nd of which he never released, then he formed Erasure. I would recommend you search out the Assembly song Never Never. It seems to be his lost song that either nobody remembers or realizes that he wrote.

This was their big hit from their first album, Speak and Spell, when Vince Clark was still in the band. Vince went on to form Yazoo (Yaz in US) and Erasure (you should check both of those bands out!). He is the blond guy in the video usually right behind Dave Gahan (lead singer) playing synth. I must be getting old because Dave looks like he sprouted his first pube the day before they filmed this!! LOL!

Great band. Great memories. They were from my neck of the woods, a few miles up the road in Basildon, and a couple of them went to Southend Technical College in Southend on Sea. They did a few gigs in 1980 at the College and everyone started talking about them. They released their first single, Dreaming of Me in April '81. One band member was in an art class with my friend and we got tickets to see them at the College that April, just as their first albumn Speak and Spell was released. Several of us got up on stage and sung Just can't get Enough and New Life with them.
I was only 15 and the band were 17 . All of us just kids. I feel honoured to have seen them so early on in their career at such a small venue as a College hall and even jumped up on stage with my mates for 5 minutes for a singalong.

DM were friends with Thomas Dolby who invented the synthesizer and they used it on their first album, (Speak and Spell,) which Just Can't Get Enough was on. The first album was primarily written by Vince Clarke, (who later went on to form Yazoo and Erasure,) but every album after that was written by Martin L Gore. They had different sounds, but Gore and Clarke used the synth and bass compression in post production to influence EVERY genre of music since 1979 when this song came out. Even as a country songwriter I seldom record a song without the producer using bass compression in post production. There's no question that DM is one of the most influential bands in history.

For anyone who hasn’t seen the news, Depeche Mode has announced a press conference for October 4, with a lot of speculation that it is to announce a new album and tour! ❤️🔥
I know I’m not the only one who’d been waiting and watching for months for news of Depeche Mode going on tour again, only to wake up to the news this summer that Andrew “Fletch” Fletcher had suddenly died of natural causes at 60, and of course began wondering if there would ever be another Depeche Mode tour again. Depeche Mode concert isn’t just a concert-it’s more like a religious experience!
