Speak And Spell is my favorite Depeche mode album. I saw them live on their first tour at the Roxy in Hollywood..... Vince Clarke had just left the band and his part was played by a large reel to reel tape recorder set on a bar stool. I saw Duran Duran in the same club that same year on THEIR first tour

    New wave/post-punk. Dance-punk.
Punk music that you can dance to, with a little synthesizers. Sometimes a little melancholy yet upbeat. lol Lex understands the vibes. Brad, too. We were kids/teens during the '80s. We (GenX) had to stay happy some way. We were going through a Cold War! lol Lex needs to check out groups like Altered Images, Berlin, New Order, Kim Wilde, etc. She'll like them. New wave was at it's peak mostly during the '80s. Started around the late '70s, and into the early '90s.
There is still music like this, but as Lex stated onto other sub genres like EDM and others. But also modern day Post punk/new wave/indie rock groups like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Metric, Bloc Party, Santigold, The Killers, etc.

I think that’s a bit of an overstatement. If you must choose a single synth-pop track as the progenitor of so many genres, Don’t you want me by The Human League is probably a better choice. In any case, new wave came from punk and was already well-established by this point while alternative (rock) evolved from post-punk (rock) music, not New Romantic pop.

Well, there were bands like Kraftwerk, Duran Duran, Sparks, Visage, Talking Heads. It's hard to credit one song with starting the popularity of synth pop.
If any one band should get credit for synth pop, it should be Kraftwerk.

This song reminds me of a 80's group called "Yaz or Yazoo". The album was "Upstairs At Eric's". "Situation" & "Don't Go" were 80's night club dance hits. Great for 80's playlist.

Since Lex enjoys them so much, she owes it to herself to watch "Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence (Live in Berlin)" here on CZcams. I never really gave them a listen. But, after that video, I've became a fan.

LOVE this song, and great that you guys did a reaction on this one, I think,,a music stile and song that you may not be too familiar with=? It was in the early 80s this, the very early 80s and it was I believe mostly or only European...syntheziser music was very in fashion back then, with groups like Depeche Mode and Eurythmics to name some of the more noteworthy of the style of music...and I love it...this I think is their best one..

80s disco staple, when you're not already in the dance floor when this blares you'd have no space if you're not fast enough to go

There it is, another massive hit written by Vince Clarke. I can't remember if you did any reaction to Yazoo or Erasure; Vince was founder of both duos as well. In case you didn't... It's time!
    + Yazoo:
    Nobody's Diary
    Situation
    Don't Go
    Midnight
    Sweet Thing
    Walk Away From Love
    + Erasure:
    Sometimes
    Oh L'Amour
    Always
    A Little Respect
Take a Chance On Me (so fun - and hillarious video - ABBA cover)
Lay All Your Love On Me (so fun - and hillarious video - ABBA cover)

If you enjoy Depeche Mode, you'd probably love the band, Art of Noise. Their songs like "Beat Box" and "Theme from Peter Gunn" (among many others) brought a lot of 'happy' to the 80s dance scene.

Nice. Instant Fun. An early DM favorite for me was Shout (Rio MIx), which is why we bought EPs back then. So from around more of less the same time for you to add to the playlist: the Buzzcocks (Everybody's Happy Nowadays ...or Orgasm Addict if you dare), Gang of Four (I Love a Man in a Uniform and Natural is Not in It), Our Daughter's Wedding (Target for Life), Cowboys International (Trash), Bush Tetras (Can't Be Funky), Random Hold (Avalanche), Classix Nouveaux (Every Home Should Have One), Mission of Burma (That's When I Reach for My Revolver), The Call (Turn a Blind Eye)

oh my word such great memories, Hammersmith Odeon crowd going crazy when the band sparked up with this and mid way through Dave Gahan stopped to tell the security in the balcony to politely piss off as they were telling people to sit down lol. he told them that these people had come to dance, the place went wild and the security retreated. they were soo cool.
