    Gorgeous specimens (gonis). I just picked one up today from Petco actually. Looked very healthy no receding tissue and it was 24.99! It's like a wintergreen mint/soft green color. Can't wait for it to open up. Got some Reef Roids to target feed too once it does. Very nice looking tank too by the way! I see your Mandarin decided to make an appearance near the end of the video 👋🏻 hi.

  • @jeepsblackpowderandlights4305

    Yea i traded a big colony of tticolor valida acropora. For a orange fungia plate and a red Goniopora. But i didnt know to ask the store owner to have him move the coral or use a turkey baster on it to make the polyps go in so i could see the skeleton.
    I got home and noticed 40% of the skeleton is dead. White. So fresh. But putting it in my 135g mid way in the tank to low to medium flow. Its polyps came out after 30 min. After 1 day its polyps are out about 1.2 inch now.
    Sooo hopefully it recovers.. Im kinda pissed he sold me a half dead one. I even called and mentioned it and he said nothing.
    So i plan to go to another store and get some coral food. My tank also has high nutrients. Some nitrates, some phosphates ect. My dirty tank is the reason why my bubble corals and other corals are so huge. I have a green bubble bigger than your flower pots combined.
    So hopefully feeding and because my tank isnt so clean. I dont use skimmers and stuff. Hopefully itll come back for me.
    I mean polyps out seems like a good sign to me

    Hey Dutch..... another excellent vid! I wanted to ask about your experience with keeping a CBB and a green Mandarin together.... do they compete for pods? I am setting up a 100G 48 x 24 x 20 and am considering a CBB as the focus fish but will have a mandarin as well. It will be a quiet tank. Your thoughts? Thx!

    • @DutchReefer
      @DutchReefer  Před 5 lety

      Thanks Matt! In my experience a CBB and Mandarin will work great together, I don't think that the CBB will be a threat to the pod population in your tank! Sounds good :-)

    @JP-dx2oj Před 3 lety

    Your goni look amazing, I have a green that looks like yours and a red one which should look like yours but the polyps only briefly open from time to time. Do you ever have one that just sulks?. Since it cannot be the water parameters or lighting, would you recommend moving the red one?

    • @DutchReefer
      @DutchReefer  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah they can be absolutely sulky, sometimes for days or weeks! If it keeps on being "sulky" then yeah you'd best move it or try at least something

    Nice one Dutch .. quick question , when you say you feed mastic , your are not actually saying that you directly feed mastic to the Goniopora or are you ?

    • @DutchReefer
      @DutchReefer  Před 5 lety +1

      Good question Tas, indeed I'm not feeding it directly but it feeds on it from the particles that float around in the water!

    @tonylangham911 Před 5 lety +1

    Don't know if this got sent, but please tell me the name of bright green coral at rear top left hand side -looking at the front of tank, its waving beautifully. what is the base substrate as it looks like crushed shell with some coral sand, you also have a nice yellow branching fan like coral at bottom front-what is it called. Whats the real way of knowing you are getting cultivated corals, don't taking from the wild. Brilliant illustrations of how much care, time and love love given the aquarium, 10/10 Tony -Salisbury, England . Only asking as upgrading to a new Red Sea MAX S 650 in March.

    • @DutchReefer
      @DutchReefer  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Tony! The one you mean is a piece of Green Star Polyp (GSP), a very beautiful and easy to keep coral! The sand is crushed shell/coral and sand indeed, a mix of ATI Fiji White and CaribSea AragAlive. The branching fans are gorgonians, the one is a Muriceopsis Flavida and the other one Pseudopterogorgia Elisabethae. It's not always easy to know if a coral was grown/cultivated or captured in the wild, but with LPS you can safely assume that most are captured in the wild, same goes for large colonies of harder to keep SPS/Acropora.

    I just picked 1 of these up yesterday. Its quite big and only paid $10 for it in the bargain tank. Love the look of it white/pink. Its not as extended as it was in the LFS though, will it just take some time to adjust?

    • @DutchReefer
      @DutchReefer  Před 4 lety

      Hi Nic, oh that's a real bargain right there! It will take some time to adjust, likely a few days. If it doesn't then you might need to put it somewhere else in the tank. Medium flow and light will do them good!

  • @brians761
    @brians761 Před 5 lety

    Beautiful tank .great video. I currently have a purple goniopora in my coral qt. Seems healthy and extended but a real pain to feed. It retracts it’s polyps almost immediately even with the slightest amount of water pressure from the turkey baster. Anyway , can you say what your current nitrate and phosphate levels are ?

    • @DutchReefer
      @DutchReefer  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you very much Brian! Yeah direct feeding isn't very effective, they do best with indirect feeding through the water column! My PO4 has been spiking from 0.4 to 0.6 but I have been able to bring it down to 0.15 while my target is 0.1 and NO3 is stable around 10 which is fine for me :)

    Just added a pink long polyp yesterday. How long does it normally take before it fully extends in a new tank if the parameters are right?

    • @DutchReefer
      @DutchReefer  Před 5 lety

      It could take weeks/months before it shows in full glory, but then again they are kind of hard corals to keep so keep a close eye on it!

I bought 2 from an auction, and the polyps didint look real long and flwing like your but I just assumed as they grew they would get longer but since I have paid for thm I noticed smaler one with real long tenacles. I also saw there are reall y flat varietys as well. i am not vert experienced and discovered these arent that expensive anyway I mauy ask If I can trade for another coral. What can you tell me about them and which one have the really long tentacles like yours. I cant find anything online. Is there a certain anme to the longer gonis?

    • @DutchReefer
      @DutchReefer  Před 4 lety

      Hi Karen! Some have long tentacles, some have short, it's basicly based on the species which is kind of hard to identify. I have seen small ones get longer and the other way around. Generally the longer they are, the more healthy the coral is!
