This isn't exactly deriving the formula, it's just verifying the formula

It was how "ancient mathematicians" derived the formula. The only difference is that they used wooden shapes and sand/grains. The formula didn't come from aliens or from a time traveller knowledgeable of differential equations which they tested for accuracy.
