Great work, as always! I love it when someone can appreciate what I've made and for the reasons I made it. That Lock is the "hard" variant and you can tell by the bitting of the key. I made them all with the same pin arrangement as a set variable and created 3 bittings meant to vary the difficulty level. Of course it was much more about the proof of concept that pin chamber tolerance matters a great deal. I consider it solid evidence of exactly that. Thank you for making a video. Charlie is coming. No time estimate just yet. Still playing with the prototype.

What a super peice of engineering and workmanship. You are right it is a work of art. The key itself is a masterpiece. Many thanks for sharing this with us and many many thanks for @digbylockandtool7281 for creating such stellar peices of craftsmanship. Can't wait to see what the next lock looks like. What you really need, although would probably be a swine to make would be some brass or plastic tensioners so you don't scratch the brass surface with the steel tools.

Hi Lock Noob, beautifully made lock cylinder, and I totally agree that pin chamber and plug/core tolerances make a lock harder to pick. Being an Aussie, and knowing how the original Lockwood cylinders were a lot harder to pick with bevelled top and bottom pins. Spools and serrated pins etc. will indicate while picking, whereas the bevelling causes the pins to set "soft" no clicks etc. Along with tight tolerances, they would be harder to spp than any other type of security pin. I reckon "Digby" should incorporate the bevelled pin ...
That's a great suggestion. I will play with that the next time I do a pin tumbler style lock. Charlie is... different.

I always thought the lockwoods used tapering pins, can you explain what the difference between tapered pins and beveled pins in this example? Edited: I always thought that the beveled pins were more like kwikset pins, so I just wanted to know which is which.
@@Phred_Phlintstoner Phred, how can I explain this ...? I'll give it a try. A tapered key pin would start narrow at the top, and gradually get fatter in the middle - a longish taper. A bevelled pin has a small section of metal removed around the top of the pin, and the rest of the pin is the normal diameter. Bevelled pins, both driver and key pins are very effective in cylinders with tight tolerances. They tend to hang up at the shearline, They also "set" soft - you don't feel a click - and require more attention to successfully set each pin. If the pin is under set it will tend to hang up at the shearline - held by the bevel - the key pin if slightly overset will also hang up at the shearline, requiring a slight release of tension. Hard to imagine because you would think that the bevel would actually help these pins to slide across the shearline, but close tolerances between plug and housing actually jam the pins at the shearline. Hope this makes sense.
@@brianhignett8954 no, that does make sense. Thank you for taking the time to explain what you meant. See, I was imagining the more rounded beveled pins that are common in kwikset locks, the are usually called beveled, but in reality are more rounded than anything, and those pins are known to make the pins set easier, so that the key can be a millimeter or two off in either direction and lthe lock will still open, making it so when picking, as long as you get the pins anywhere near where they should be, they just kinda set themselves...
