    With the Mexican cavalry detachment sent retreating after the Battle of Gonzales, the Texians prepared for the phase of the war, removing the Centralist troops from Texas. However, just as the dragoons ride out of the vicinity of the rebellious town. General Martin Perfecto de Cos arrives on the Texas coast with a force of 500 men to suppress the rebellion that has risen up in the state. With the arrival of Cos, more men rise to fight back against what they see as a Centralist takeover of the state. San Antonio de Bexar, the regional capital, becomes a vacuum that pulls in the various armed groups in the state. That will result in a month-long siege and a chaotic street-to-street battle for supremacy on the Mexican Frontier. The result of this fight will prompt a major reaction from the very President of the Mexican Republic, who decides it is finally time for him to march in and settle things for good.

    The given number of Texian dead and wounded during the 3 day battle to take the Town's Plaza just don't tally with the Mexican dead. This is close quarter house to house fighting and would have left probably equal numbers of dead on either side. Mexican moral never broke during their steady push back into the Town centre. They had a small company of sharp shooters in reserve and twice flanked the Texians [both beaten off]. Wikipedia gives different numbers completely. Anyone have any idea of the real numbers of dead and wounded during this intense 3 day battle during the overall siege. Also sieges of length in this period would have produced many non-combat dead. Any thoughts and points would be great.

    I read somewhere that the reason the Mexican Army's marksmanship was so bad in these battles was because the French & English had sold them old Muskets with barrels so worn down they couldn't hit the broadside of a barn? In your research have you come upon anything like this explanation?

    • @WarhawkYT
      @WarhawkYT  Před 6 měsíci +5

      Oh yes definitely, the Mexicans bought all the surplus rifles from the European powers. Probably guns used during the napoleonic wars. Not only that but what I told another, they also bought poor powder as well. Theres a few reports of Texians being shot but the balls just bouncing off because they had no power behind their shots. When the Texians captured Mexican powder, they would just dump it because it was useless compared to the powder they have.

I get that most of the army was demoralized and had no interest in fighting, but how are they still numerically superior but yet still can barely graze the Texans? Not to mention the Texans superior rifles, commanders and fighting spirit.

      Besides the Alamo and Coleto Creek, the Mexicans have a hard time killing the Texians. The texians used modern rifles compared to the brown besses of the Mexican army. Yeah that might be the standard infantry gun of the day but also, one note people don’t take into consideration is the quality of the powder. The powder that the Mexicans used was cheap and did not have the same hitting power compared to the texians. There are reports of some Mexican balls bouncing off the Texians because their powder was so useless.

    Lol, hol' up. Austin wanted to attack, but the men who were bored from a lack of action were like naawww bro, were good.
    Then they start complaining again about a lack of action. Then Burleson is like: ok, lets attack, but again they were like naww.....but then again they were like but now were bored.
    LOL.....just LOL.....

    Sorry to be that guy. Bexar is pronounced bear. Born and raised Texan and that fact as always annoyed me as bear is bear not Bexar. But trust me it's pronounced bear.

      Yes the anglicized pronunciation of Bexar is Bear, as you said it. But the Hispanic pronunciation is bey-har as I said it.

      Juan Seguin is basically a Texan Coriolanus, imagine being a hero of a rebellion and then you have to abandon your own homeland and then join the army of your former enemy.

    If you really want to know how the " Texians " thought , go to about the 16:50 mark until you get to the " drinking and pot shot shooting part " . You are taught that from a young age in Texas. 🤣

    So far it seems insubordination is Texas’ greatest power.
    If you want to know where the stereotype of the insubordinate badass who plays by his own rules yet gets the job done battles like these helped ingrain that trope.
