The Union launches its first campaign in retaking and reopening the Mississippi River from the Confederates. Their first major obstacle in this great and daunting undertaking are the Confederate strongholds at Island Number Ten and New Madrid, Missouri. Union Brigadier General John Pope, commanding the Army of the Mississippi, must eliminate these two strategic defensive points on the Mississippi River in cooperation with Flag Officer Andrew H. Foote’s Western Flotilla if the Union is to achieve its crucial first step in the campaign to reopen the mighty river to Union traffic.

My great-great-grandfather fought at New Madrid and Island No. 10 with Co. G of the 27th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Thank you for this detailed and engaging treatment of an oft neglected engagement of the Civil War.
Great stuff! Flag Officer Foote is a more distant relative of mine.
Tell him I thank him for his service
@@brianfergus839 So you combine both names- Foote Fergus, sounds like an itchy sit-che- a- tion. That's funny HA HA Not funny quare!
So did your ancestor survive a foolin' with those rebs?
@@carywest9256 yes “Fungus” has of course been a chiding nickname throughout my life. My brother’s middle name is “Foote”… I’ll have to relate your observation to him lol
Flag Officer Foote died of kidney disease during the war. My Great-Grandfather, Addison Osgood Foote, was an infantryman on the Northern side, who survived the conflict.
We’re also distantly related to Shelby Foote, whose ancestors fought on the grey side.
I agree with you 100% I wish there was a detailed book on the whole affair, there’s so much, detail left, like the full surrender ceremonies there and Tiptonville, and the pow’s so early in the war, and in this theater, camp Randell was opened, there a cemetery there. How many officers and men, see these wasn’t paroled as Donaldson’s or Vicksburg. They had to wait, details of the regiment’s such as the 27th and the rosters of men and officers, where all these people would later serve, all those Rebel officers, where did they go ? How many was surrendered? Officers & men? How many arms was collected. I believe it’s all important and highly over looked, suppose, they held, and got relief to Johnston or Beauregard at Shilo ? Sure they was pretty well cut off by Pope’s engineers landscaping and planning, it was a gamble that paid off. But it’s not looked at today as a important maneuver, or battle , bc The battle of Shiloh casualty Dommers overshadow that so much😮, Not to consider, it is nice to win wo so much blood shed. I do wish some young person would consider doing a good book report on it, there’s a lot for research and depth for a very good read, perhaps a good book on a forgotten battle your grandfather’s story for example, all these men, there’s more I believe that is yet to be told. How about them Reb too ? Mostly they are scrapper’s, but oh well. I’d like to know more .
Great work! The river battles of this war are so interesting and unique in history. Ironclads were literally floating tanks that were near-impervious to the available artillery systems, sometimes deflecting over 100 shells with minimal damage. TMK this was the last major war where river-faring vessels played an essential role in subjugating forts
Ah yes the ironclads are a unique creature to come out of the civil war

Great series. Graphics are clear, detailed, narrative is clear and on point. Glad I found this! Well done.
Thanks Brian, I'm glad you are enjoying my channel!
A pure game of chess occurred with the Union making the best moves and it sure helps to have those ironclads.
I think the issue was less that the measures of defence were obsolete, and more that the US just had overwhelming force. They were able to bring a LOT of manpower and firepower to bear on the defenses.
Found this fort to cause me a lot of headache trying to take and hold it in Civil War II so had to look it up lol.
I just found your channel and now I’m addicted. Thanks 😂
New MADrid!!!!! I grew up there, just wanted you to know the correct way to pronounce it. Years ago we had Civil War re-enactments every summer. Fun times. Such a rich history where I grew up, although I sympathized with the Union, have ancestors on both sides. Which, sadly, was common back then.
Thank you so very much for this excellent video! My G3 Grandfather was in this battle, 26th Illinois, Squire Holliday.
your videos are great, you deserve more views
These are excellent. Great job!
I just discovered your channel and I cant stop watching. What is wrong with me? I went through all of Montemayor videos last year at least twice over since he rarely upload and your channel is a godsend right now. I always loved the Civil war but couldnt find good contents on the subject. Thanks a lot.
Amazing as always!
Besides the amazing writing and visuals of this episode, I very much enjoyed the new music.
Thanks Jesse! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent content. Thank you.
Just amazingly well done! I sure was focused.
Forgot ft. Hieman. Love these animated maps gives you prospectives on units
This is phenomenal use of today's tools! Thank you Warhawk for the delivery and execution!
Great video of a battle i haven't heard of
So far I think you’re one of the best people that I saw that describes these!!!
Thanks Megalodon Shark!
Really well done, thanks.
Thanks Michael!
At a cost of fewer than 100 casualties, John Pope captured 7,000 Confederates at New Madrid & Island Number 10, in April, 1862, That's the same Pope who was defeated by Lee at 2nd Bull Run, in August, 1862. Pope rehabilitated his reputation, after the 2nd Bull Run fiasco, when he went West to manage the Dakota War. He oversaw the defeat of the Sioux War in Minnesota
General Pope had a humbling, in VA,
Pilot of the Carondelet is named Hoel. Possibly the namesake for DD USS Hoel of Leyte Gulf fame?
Well done,Sir
found you in art lounge, this is some high quality shit
Thanks Gian! I was getting suggetions to improve my thumbnails.
It is Mad rid in Missouri.
I just watched the video on Pea Ridge and just started this one. This is good material, but the overall quality is hampered by a couple of flaws that I think could be cleaned up. The most annoying is the frequent change of verb tense. It’s acceptable to narrate in either past or present tense, but changing tense repeatedly disrupts the flow considerably. Next, there are occasional mispronunciations of town names like Keokuk and New Madrid, and the word “theater” is usually accented on the first syllable. Finally, overall flow of narration could be improved. Clean up those items and this becomes a very impressive and top-notch channel.
lots of potential for this channel- the theater thing makes me laugh for some reason tho hope he keeps it but rest 100%
Tough pronunciations: CARE-row Illinois, New MADrid
Great Grandpa Henry Coleman Lee was 46th TN CO I :) he was captured and escaped from island no 10 at Camp Butler and on his way ran into nathan bedford forrest and forrest sent him home because he was blind with eye issues and in no condition to fight. Little did Nathan (MY 4th cousin 3rd time removed know that his son William Henry Lee married Mattie Mozilla Forrester and thats how a LEE OF VA and FORREST are related :) Forrest is a FORRESTER out of scotland his grandfather dropped the er off the name during a money dispute. Henry Coleman Lee is a Lee of Va Robert E Lee 4th cousin 7x removed :) MI FAMILIA!
The graphics and analysis are excellent. One complaint, however. The narrator continually mispronounces place names. In this and associated videos Cape Girardeau, New Madrid, and Carondelet are not pronounced correctly. Part of the problem is that Americans tend to "angelize" foreign words. (New Madrid is NOT pronounced like the Spanish city.)
It is obvious that the narrator is trying to do justice to these place names, but just a little more research (perhaps a phone call?) would be in order.
Agreed. Just a tad more effort and this kind of quality is something that should and quite possibly might end up on museum kiosks. His Pea Ridge video I think is either better or at least on-par with what you find at the Pea Ridge Battlefield museum.
Well it is artificially generated text to speech narration, so the mispronunciations and stilted delivery are to be expected. The human touch could do this production a world of good.
We will make a stupid defense. I think we'll use Cairo syrup
lol how the hell could you pronounce the names of the Confederate boats but not the word 'traverse'
I'm just poking fun, you make great videos, but that made me chuckle
Love your videos. One small point: 'Schuyler" is pronounced 'Skylar"
Thank you, I dont know that much german
@@WarhawkYT it’s actually Dutch👍! New Madrid should be pronounced as New MAD (as in angry) rid. Thx
@@jackhana7374 you have the idea lol
@@WarhawkYT your Civil War series is excellent!
My great great grandfather fought in this battle for the Confederates. I'm currently doing some research on him. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and served in the First Tennessee Heavy Artillery Regiment (Jacksons) and was captured after the battle. I was wondering if anyone knows what happened to the Confederates after they were captured.
I’ve also wondered how Island no 10 would have turned out if Van Dorn reinforced McCown there. Interesting how you mentioned McCown was hoping for that as well
Interesting thought
The south seemed to be trying to lose here, even moreso changing comander and loosing 5 regiments seems a crippling loss
@jeffbybee5207 the CSA made a lot of mistakes out west. Outside of a few notable exceptions it is one blunder after another.
1:37 Wouldn't ever hear a Roman Legionnaire say such a thing, hahah.
👍🏻
Vey nice & professional video. You get a new sub, good sir. May I ask, are you the same person who runs the Saris channel? You sound very similar.
I am
The western theater was one ass kicking after another . Terrible leaders was one of the reason of the failure
Great stuff. Incidentally it’s pronounced “MAD rid,” emphasis on the first syllable.
Keep up the good work. Glad I found your channel.
Hey, you pronounced “Cairo” correctly. This is impressive. Everyone mispronounces the name of that town. So you get a pass on “Madrid.” 😊
Pope!
They named an Air Force Base after him.
it's not named after that old guy in Rome?
New MAD-rid. When discussing US placenames which are carryovers of European places, always double check because the citizens of the USA often intentionally change the pronunciation of locations named by immigrants from Europe.
Yeah people in the Midwest like to be weird in their spelling lol
This channel needs proper voice talent. Other than that it is perfect.
have you seen any of our recent videos?

You should cover the 2nd battle of cortinth
very soon, im excited for it too, my hometown regiment will be there!
@@WarhawkYT my 4th great grandfather was there with the 20th Arkansas infantry
I don’t have ancestors in it but the 2nd Texas came from my hometown!
@@WarhawkYT nice
6:43 the irony
why?
I never thought about how the Confederates were rebels until you called them so. I guess its true
I like when generals have an estimated 30,000 men. Any less or any more is a bit off putting to me.
Nice graphics, but the pronunciation is so bad its like you have a synthetic voice narrator. Many different place and people's names are just slaughtered. 8.75/10. Fix the pronunciation and you have a solid 9.9998/10
The new marketing is occurring and the citizens have more illness than ever before just come, listen to how many can will be made to be thought of as owners on the way.

No its Based department
@@WarhawkYT im commanding the department of epic and based?
Many words, not just place names, are grossly mispronounced. "cone set oga," "dee sul tary," for instance.
Very interesting. Unfortunately all of the mispronounced words are tedious.
Interesting video, but your pronunciation needs work. A scow is pronounced like 'cow', and there were many other words mispronounced.
your stuff is very good... there is one annoying point though - your English pronunciation is pretty bad... Cairo is not Kairo as an example... you should go to google and listen to how the words are pronounced
The Cairo in Illinois is pronounced cay-roh (just like in the video).
Warhawk more like war gay
bruh
Says the guy with the Bobby boy
Does anyone else think this boy is dyslexic? If you're to be narrator be a good reader or get someone else to do it. That is, if you want to be taken seriously.
hey shut up

Reads like you’re making a put down of people w a disability. Perhaps my child has dyslexia, and she has overcome a lot of hurdles, and probably earn’s more income than you do. Because if you are so intelligent, you probably need a lesson in good manners. You’re are a bit of a nit picker , aren’t you ? 😅
Jackass comment.
