  • Flood water races across the Ham and reaches as far as the Crown Hotel. The Riverside Cafe is now the Cafe in the River.

1979, I had just moved to Blandford at the age of 4years, my now Husband remembers it well as he was a Scout at the time and used his Canoe to deliver much needed supply’s to those in need.

Thanks for your comment Tiplady. A shared memory. 1979 could be right although there were a run of these floods in those times.

Think from what my husband said the 1979 was the worst one, thank goodness for the flood barriers now.

I think the water got even higher than this at one point. I remember only being able to see the roof of the riverside cafe.

It probably was indeed '77. Jack Hargreaves featured footage from the '77 flood at Stourpaine in one episode of 'Out of Town'. It's strange to remember a time before the embankment thingy when the Stour caused trouble in and around Blandford every--what--three years or so?

Any thing anyone remembers, I got to do a homework piece on this flood and so far can't find anything on it

Sorry I missed this and so it's a bit late for your homework! I hope it went well.
