For me, a potfiller is just another opportunity for a water leak. Of course I am coming out of a major kitchen/laundry room reno because of a water leak, so maybe I'm a bit gun shy. Thankful for this channel because it helped with our new kitchen planning so much.
Thanks so much for watching my content. The pot filler is a hotly debated topic for sure.
Especially when the sink is not even a step a way
This was a great segment and I am glad I was a part of it. I thank you for being kind as always
LOVE your outlets - new to me. Great job!
@@brendashine343 Thank you, We went all in, We added 12 under cabinets and 3 wall outlets. The outlets under the cabinets were well needed.
Loved your kitchen. Outlets! Stealing....
Thank you Vonda! I appreciate your willingness to participate!!
@@brendashine343 Thank you Brenda
The thought process behind the design decisions people made was illuminating.
Amen to your comment on the microwave shelf, versus a built-in microwave. My built in microwave went out, and I found out that only ONE microwave would fit the space. I don't know what I'll do when that model of microwave is no longer made. Sell the house, I guess. I wish I'd done the microwave shelf. I enjoyed this video a lot. Lots of nice kitchens.
Me too! When we first moved into this house 32 years ago, we had a combo oven microwave unit. Of course the microwave died first. Separating the units was a BEAR. Since then, fourth microwave and second oven. My renovation is definitely taking into account replacing appliances, since they do not seem to last very long.
@@luckylibbet1 We've had great luck w/ making a simple shelf and frame ourselves and matching the stain. We have a large microwave 15" tall and 1200 Watts. If we need to replace it, I don't see going any larger.... We've built this out in 2 different houses. That said, new house, the microwave will be in our walk-in Pantry.
I did a microwave shelf like this in my kitchen too, it has been the perfect solution for wanting to avoid an OTR but also not spend the money on a built in (and I don't WANT a large microwave, to start with!) Having the shelf means I can use an off the rack countertop/ small MW (the cost for getting the outlet was worth it.)
The best thing about this is something happens to the microwave $44 versus having to remove a built-in
I used to sell appliances for HH Greg in Fort Wayne, Indiana and we sold Ropers… And that was back in 1999
Appliances depend on the state. In my state, the refrigerator, freezer, washer, and dryer are considered personal property and it is assumed that they will be removed when the house is sold unless a deal to leave them is explicitly made.
This has been my experience as well.
I am taking in so many ideas. Already had a video consultation with Mark, then had a consult with another designer which refined some ideas. Refining further. Just double checked with husband that he doesn't have a secret desire for a pot filler, since that seems to be recurring...wife does not want and husband does..,he does NOT.
Meeting first contractor Saturday, second Monday, and third Wednesday. Wish me luck!
My goal is for contractor to be done mid October so I can host Thanksgiving. Wishful thinking?
Depends on the scope of work and your location.
prior to my demo, I had been listening to Mark old and new videos, and I took all his pointers from him. He was so relatable so by the time it came to the design and since we did not change the layout. it was just making sure the details were right.
If you put the cabinets on the back wall together and the space next to the oven/range, you could open the cabinet door without hitting the range's oven. I really like the LG ranges as well. I live with my sister and have my portable NuWave Induction Cooktops, but if I were to live on my own and picked out a range / stovetop, I would get an LG Range with Induction Cooktop, and it has Air Frying, Air Sous Vide, a Temp Prob, and Convection bake, roast, toast, etc. Also, you can tap on the oven window, and it lights up so you can see how things are cooking without opening the oven, and also, self-cleaning as well.
Placing the opening with your garbage can underneath, next to the oven would solve the issue of cabinets and oven door hitting each other. Love how you have a space for your garbage can out of site, but in reach. Also love the OTR microwave oven, and LG has a very nice one that has 5 - vent speeds and two light setting hi and low, as well as Microwave, convection and air frying, would serve as a secondary oven and air fryer, when you are using the main oven for one thing, you can use the OTR for air frying, at least for that OTR LG Microwave, and it looks really nice on top of all that. That would be the Range and OTR Microwave setup that I would get. I also love their refrigerators, especially the French door and freezer drawer models.
Also love your white shaker style cabinets with the silver (or Nickel Silver) handles. Nice backsplash and the countertops bring some color into the kitchen.
Why does everyone call it a "Lazy Susan"? How about a turn style cabinet?
I have the same apron sink as the first picture but in silver or brushed nickel… looove it! And mine is 36” wide. For a small kitchen it’s surprisingly suitable in my space!
I love it as well. It was the very first thing I purchased when I knew we were doing a demo. It's a show stopper.
I love this sink. It was the very first item I purchased when I knew we were doing a demo. It is certainly a Show Stopper
@@vondapommills2195 I actually wanted to return it due to the large size, but they didn’t want me to return it after the refund so I didn’t want to waste & ended up using it. So glad it worked out!
@@vondapommills2195 By the way, I really love your kitchen design! 💚 very beautifully thought out!
Thank you Michelle and I do like Shiny Shiny. We tried to think of everything and from the beginning we knew what worked and what we needed, We followed Mark because he was so relatable. We were under budget because we purchased most of the supplies and not from their suppliers.
We just renovated our kitchen and Lowes does have a microwave shelf I included it in my new cabinets and I love it. The OTR is a little high for Seniors but the microwave shelf is perfect and I placed my food saver on the counter under it.
Another question I suspect people have is whether I could remove a wall to enlarge the kitchen. Again the answer is no. For one it would be cost prohibitive, but there are other structural reasons as well. The chimney wall backs up to stairs. The short dining room wall where the stove is currently has heating ductwork, electrical and plumbing to the second floor and there’s no place to reroute it. The wall to the back room is the exterior two story house wall that is balloon framed (meaning no sill plate between first and second floors and over 16’ studs). In addition I learned from the grandchild of the original owner that there was another house on this property and they built this house AROUND the other one while they remained living in it! Some of the interior walls in my house may be exterior walls from the old house! So moving walls and changing doors could be opening a can of worms I can’t afford!
For those who asked in the live comments about removing the chimney:
The chimney runs from the basement through to the second floor and out the roof. It used to vent both the furnace and gas water heater. After the furnace was replaced with a high efficiency unit that vented out of the side of the house I got a quote to see what it would cost to remove the chimney if I could find a water heater that didn’t need to use it. The quote was $8,000 - $10,000 pre-pandemic, plus I’d need the cost of changing to a different type of water heater. So removing it is not an option. My tentative idea in a remodel is to use shallow base IKEA cabinets cut even shallower around the chimney. A 21” cabinet facing the stove cut shallower with a full height door could hold my TV trays that are currently next to the fridge. An 18” unit cut shallower with shelves and a full height door could hold some of the things currently on that counter.
55:55 Nick's kitchen- I'd like to see the backsplash on the right side extend upwards to the ceiling and frame the window. And it ends abruptly past the counter, but I don't know what to do with that. I'm fine with the island size otherwise it would be an obstacle on the way to the pantry.
I noticed where the tile ended on the right beyond the cabinets too. I think if the tile was extended at least one or two full tiles further and then all the way to the floor and up to the ceiling it would look more intentional. But I know he’s selling and budget was an issue. Maybe new owner could do that.
Thanks Mark - fun to be with you again !!! Wish I had known about your services in 2021 when I started my equipment shed conversion. Oh so many mistakes and compromises. And Jackie - come on down to Florida and I will make you as many cups of coffee in your particular style as you want !

@@MTKDofficial Gonna be a while but I'll get back to you!
Great idea! I’d definitely put my kitchen up for a before and after. I have a 1997 kitchen that we’re getting ready to renovate but probably won’t be finished til late autumn
These kitchens are gorgeous. I 💯 loved this show and bummed I missed it live!!!
Maggie's kitchen seemed dark to me and the chandeliers were a little too bright near eye level, but maybe she turned them up for the pictures. I loved the "granite" countertops and the appliance storage. I guess I'm not a big fan of the black cabinets and the dark ceiling, either, but I'm still jealous!
I did turn up the lights for the photos. And, the bulbs themselves are 8 feet off the floor ... unless you are a basketball player, they couldn't be shining in your eyes. The magic of photography I guess. My ceilings range from 13 to 18 feet and I used a black flat galvalume that is processed to look like Japanese Shou sugi ban. I agree, not everyone's taste but still fun ! All the countertops are indeed granite.
I love this kitchen, the towel hack is fantastic.
High mark that was a great show , really enjoyed it . If you do a before and after Reno segment on your show that would be fantastic. I would love to participate in that .
I would like to see Jackie's range centered in the U-shape and I would have spaced the microwave down lower. I have a range up against the corner like that and that's how I know! I realize that it was already like that and she only put a new face on it.
37:40. Roper was the cheap end of Whirlpool.
But it's still working. When I replaced my Sears washer w/ an LG HE, the gentleman that did the install was amazed - he was about to retire and had never pulled a washing machine that old. We had moved it from a previous home, but it was old then - and working.
i love my roper wash machine. it is a very basic brand, who needs a bunch of bells and whistles, mine has been going strong for 17 years.
I’ve never purchased or sold a home with a fridge. I think n it depends on your area, but I’ve never lived where it was common to include a fridge with the sale of your home. U.S. here.
I just finished my small kitchen from scratch & very interested in hearing Mark’s suggestions for it! 😅 how do I send you the pics?
Send them to mark@mtkd.ca
Obviously my kitchen is pre-remodel, but it would be really interesting to see what the other remodeled kitchens looked like before, if any of you took before pictures!
For those who asked if I could close off a door the answer is no. The door on the chimney wall goes to both the front and side entrances to the house. The door on the other side of the stove goes to the dining room and the kitchen is small enough there’s no eat in area, which is fine with me since I have a dining room.
So, if not removing the door, maybe just re-positioning it?
@@kimherben7866 No. no structural changes due to cost and other things that need changing that will already drive up cost (plumbing/sink move, heat duct outlet move, gas line move). Homes in my neighborhood run between $100,000 to $150,000, so I want to keep the remodeling budget to $25,000 max doing some of the work myself or with friends (removal of existing cabinets and soffits, assembling IKEA cabinets that don’t need modifications and maybe even those that do, stripping wallpaper and painting, etc). I need to hire for installation, plumbing, vent move, etc.
Yes this vanilla ice cream kitchen is very nice but doesn't look like the two parts go together.
In one of the kitchens, you mentioned that a pull out pantry is great for narrower pantries… I’m redoing my kitchen and debating on pull out drawers vs a pull out pantry. What would you say is the max width appropriate for a pull out since I know they can get heavy, etc.? (My pantry will be 15” wide)
Due to being on the other side of the globe (almost), I only got to see this now and not live. Sorry to say that I totally HATE that kitchen that was a barn, especially the lighting which was inadequate for me. HOWEVER, it looks like there's a really, Really, REALLY high ceiling, so pot lights wouldn't help. But cork flooring... yeah, I could get behind that totally (as long as it is properly sealed). In fact, I wouldn't mind it throughout my whole house (except for the bathrooms)!
Mark didn't show the pictures showing the LED 'pot lights' that totally illuminate the entire area. Yes, the ceilings range from 13 to 18 feet in height. And, the cork flooring is indeed throughout the entire barn house and I have the muscles to prove it ... did it all myself ! 2 coats of sealer (stupid expensive stuff) on all the floors and it works great, stands up to the 2 dogs !!!
@@slyfoxqh Okay. Good to know there's better lighting. But it is a matter of taste, and it certainly is impressive, just not what I'd put in my kitchen (not that I have anywhere near the space). If you love your kitchen, that's what matters. It was just way too stark for my taste. But cork flooring - that's a real winner element for me. Not too warm, not too cold, just right. I hope you enjoy it in good health for many years! (Oh, and yeah, I would love to have that coffee machine as well.)
Too bad, I missed this segment.
Hoi Mark, What is OTR cause I do not know this, sorry, old-dino-nitwit here ROFL!! O, ok, I heared it, you said it in the video hihi.
I would like a kind of 'build-in' oven and microwave but there must be room in case a bigger oven or microwave must come in there!!!

How about a cabinet with barn doors in area where when opening an oven or fridge would be in the way of a door cabinet?
That could work. You might be on to something.
Also. When do these start? Would like to participate, but somehow never manage.

Wonder how people submitted photos ? CZcams doesn’t allow posting photos in comments.
Great to see you both! Jackie, how are you doing Post wedding? We've framed out microwaves in our last two homes w/ stained wood trim. Never had a problem with a new unit, when needed. I'd have to eliminate the dark carpeting in Trina's kitchen. How can you show us the invisible fan -- if it's invisible? Thank you both, it was fun.
I have original hardwood flooring in the rest of the house. I knew from original owner’s great-granddaughter that they had the black and white linoleum tiles in the kitchen, but I could see bare wood floors when the dishwasher was pulled.
I tried pulling back the carpet and scraping any remaining black mastic since the tiles were already gone, but the flooring underneath was softer wood and too badly damaged to refinish, so I just laid the carpet back down loose while I figure out what to do.
@@trinaroe5132 We've had Engineered Hardwood in this house for 25 years, still looks (and feels) great. Except for at the refrigerator. Our Icemaker on the fridge made an ice dam when we had a long power outage. Then it melted. Problem is, we weren't home at the time. Found out from the power going out on the oven clock and figuring out it was off for either 8 hours or 20 hours.
The house we'll be moving into has Waterproof LVP, which I'm a little averse to, but I'll be able to mop better and it's a commercial grade which should stand up to the dogs better. Also, it has a foam core cushion which gives a little for standing in the kitchen.
It's a shame you cannot move your range (I'm guessing here b/c of the gas connection.) Have you had the hose changed and the valves checked?
Also looked at if you could eliminate/move one of the doorways to reconfigure so you could actually have some countertop next to your range.
I lived in a 100-year old farmhouse (it was the 3rd of in a 180-year homestead, the previous two burned down, when we were living there it had a metal roof). I had the electrical and stove connections all checked/ updated.
@@kimherben7866 In the remodel plans I’m working on I do plan to move the stove and it would involve moving the gas line. The biggest problem with the current stove location is not the lack of landing space, but being in the traffic path when people are here. The floor under the carpet is in pretty rough shape and cost to pull the wood floor and put in new is prohibitive so I’m probably going to go with LVP. The heat outlet would be moved to the toe kick of the pantry and the fridge would be moved to the stove area in my ideas.
@@trinaroe5132 I'd be cautious about heat going into your pantry if you have canned goods, non-perishables, oils, shortening/lard, etc. I live in South Texas, though, so we might have different ideas on heating locations. The good news is it looks like you have a lot of square footage total in your kitchen. Will you do a consult w/ Mark? He has a lot of experience, but if you want corner cabinet solutions, you'll have to push for it!! Ha, ha.

The aesthetic is
Not cohesive. I felt your critique of the space was polite. This would be a good example of what not to do! visual design is clashing and organization could of been more thoughtful. I notice to areas with cooking utensils in crocks. I see many mistakes.
Pot filler to high and doesn’t make sense. The sink is so close!
The farm sink is nice but not in this application. It should be a focal point. It competes with the range.
To many finishes trying to take center stage.
Pick ONE.
Please. We all learn by giving constructive advise. Wish the home designer had more professional guidance
I am not loving the tin backsplash. it makes the sink stand out like a sore thumb.
