Welcome to another installment in my learning journey!
In today's video, we revisit the same quilt we looked at in the last video. Why? Because it presents an opportunity for us to understand the value of our work. Beginner quilts are not to be underestimated. Their potential goes well beyond what's obvious at first glance. Not only are they learning tools, but they are #legacyquilts!
There's so much we can learn from this quilt. The quilt maker clearly had a good design in mind. Look at how well the sashings of her borders line up with those in the quilt. Look at how she angered the two corners of the quilt. Look at the simple fact that it is double sided. This quilt maker, Eleanor Seefeld Patrick, created art. She created a legacy quilt to be cherished for the ages.
Frayed edges and all this quilt became more than a finished quilt. It became inviting, cozy, and lovely. It became a legacy piece of art for the generations.
I hope you enjoy watching the video! But mostly, I hope you find something encouraging from it!
Do you have any tips and tricks for staying disciplined and motivated when it comes to all of your creative pursuits? I'd love to hear about them.
Are you working on a similar piece that allows you to explore your creative side? I'd love to see it and share it with others!
Are you working the 2024 blockheads too? Or maybe you're working the Pick A Petal BOM, or the Piece and Quilt Sampler #QAL? Whichever, I'd love to share your blocks! We all get inspiration and encouragement from each other, so please don't be shy!
Please email your picture to lakesideQMA@gmail.com
    Come learn with me!
See you in the next video!

She is a Doxle- dachshund and beagle mix. Two adorable breeds, so she just can’t help but be adorable 😂

In his last days, my father spilled a drink on my favorite quilt. It's stained but it's even more special to me now.

Ohhh I totally get that! Somehow it’s a connection with him! I’m sorry you’ve had to say goodbye to him!
Quilts are so multifaceted in what all they do for us. They’re therapy and they’re comfort- emotional and physical. Not many art forms do all that!

I love the idea of that quilt. Even without the embellishments it can be beautiful

It sure could! Especially if one uses really dramatic fabrics in the blocks set on the diagonal.

Yeah it just goes to show us that every element of the quilt plays a role in the quilt’s finished story. It all matters!

I do love looking at show quilts and admire the workmanship. But I make quilts to be loved and used. I love to make quilts for friends that are going thru tough times and I think about that person as I make it. I recently made one for a co worker and had no idea how much she would feel from my gift of that quilt. It was made of simple half square triangle blocks. Simple patterns are loved with the same vigor as those with a more complicated one.❤

I totally agree! A quilt is a gift like no other. It touches the recipient in ways we will never know - and through the ages!
I too love the show quilts. And I want to make some eventually but meanwhile I’m going to learn this phase of the game!

Show quilts are beautiful. I choose not to make those. I want the people who get my quilts to use them for what they want to

I completely agree. I make quilts to keep my family warm and make them happy just like grandma did. I am 80 years old and don’t see well. I don’t make seams exactly match or bother with a scant 1/4 “ seam. I tell each person I give one too, “don’t look too close.” And they never do or care about that. Thank you

I agree with you, and that's what I tell the recipient when I gift a quilt. My mother would tell me the same thing when she presented an afghan or quilt to me😊

The quilt is a 'comforter' on several levels. Supplies warmth. It has comfortable eye appeal, the hands feel the softness, etc.

It is interesting as well as beautiful. You simply want to look at it. I agree, it didn't need the embellishments.

It’s truly such a testimony for all the possibilities that exist with just our simplest of blocks - which in turn sparks creativity, doesn’t it?!

What size are the blocks in the quilt and what size is the sashing between the blocks😊

    • @LakesideQuiltmakingArts
      @LakesideQuiltmakingArts  Před měsícem

The blocks are roughly 4”. The sashing vary from 2-3.
The inner border is 1.5 as is the binding.

I totally get that! It might be a way to give life to a quilt though that’s otherwise destined for the rubbish. I don’t think I could ever cut into a quilt myself though.
But one comes to mind that fits my description above- destined for the trash if I don’t figure out how to give it a second life.
