I saw one of the performances in this series, but with Johanna Meier and Enrico di Giuseppe. I’ve seen ~300 live operas, including Sills’s queens, Sutherland’s Lucia, Domingo’s Otello, the Elektra of Nilsson/Jones/Behrens, so many others. And yet the Mefistofele with Ramey, in Capobianco’s production, was the greatest performance I’ve ever seen. It’s not my favorite opera, Boito is not my favorite composer, Ramey was not my favorite singers. And yet……..
