That's pretty good for a master lock. A picker with a little exp. with security pins wont have trouble with it, but nice to see it not opened by a broken toothpick for a change.
It would be nice to include the price if possible, so we can make more meaningful comparison. Because choosing a lock always depending on cost, otherwise Master Lock No 3 wouldn't exists in the market :)
Your comment was 1 yr ago. I've only been a pick hobbyist for about 2 months. I purchased this same lock from Ace and have been handed my ass back by it. I pick at it, sometimes rake at it, periodically but haven't had any luck. I'm just curious if you've breached it yet.
Used to have a small Abus lock key at high school, that was a perfect match for low-end Master lock cores... tention it, go back and forth.... Profit.... We used this trick to access the rooftop of the school on our last day in it.... and we got caught :) sweet memories

@@raincheck5892 Just as a heads up I got mine to lock up my shop. It's been out in the weather and it's rusted a lot. Which is kinda bullshit for a lock of this price. So just keep that in mind.
This is a nice idea for a series. I wanted to do something similar, buying a padlock in each supermarket I visit to see what kind of security the average customer gets when they just want to buy a lock. The shop I visit the most hasn't restocked their locks in at least a month though, it's ridiculous…
I had this lock for a chain cable to lock my bike up at work(home depot lol) and i kept this lock inside the little storage compartment on the side of my dirt bike. When I bought it the rubber wasn't in the best shape so I took it off. The next day when i went to work and opened the compartment the lock was disassembled completely, im guessing by just vibrations.
I appreciate the way you caveat your ratings. Yes you can pick it in seconds but you have practiced to an elite level that very few people have both the talent and patience to attain. Many people with that level of mental discipline will likely not need to resort to crime to attain success.
So I am very new to lock picking and I just bought one of these today. It took me less than a minute to pick this lock open. Ive only successfully picked a couple practice lock and an old cheap master lock before this. Im a big fan of the show. Have a good day.
I am very new to the hobby (2 mo). I bought one of these 1 mo ago and have not breached it yet. I have several locks I can't pick and each has a similar issue- short pins behind long pins. I'm curious if you found the unicorn only +/- 2 between pins
aserta Do you mean that that is the best lock you have seen used around your neighbourhood? Thats an interesting observation to make. I personally couldn‘t tell for where I live. Here in Germany there are many high tier locks, there must be dozens of Abus Plus cores in my area, they are very common in Abus bike locks. The best locks available in hardware stores are usually Abus 37/55.
Hahaha! The "Best" at Home Depot! A regional chain carried the same when I was learning to pick, so I bought it. I saw someone on CZcams open it in ~90s, so I set my goal to that. Again, deferring to the rake, I met that goal. But good God! Watching you take it down pin by pin that fast - that was really cool to see (not for Master locks though I imagine)! To be fair, the lock has some heft that makes it intimidating beyond the standard Master lock, and it has some tough to hit pins (for some I guess, lol). Thanks for posting the vid - that was some damn fine skill!
Even quicker than picking is removing the core. Pull the rubber cover off the bottom, then using a pair of side cutters grab the rectangle shaped head of the bolt/nut that holds the core cover on. Wiggle it to loosen it, or get more agreesive to rip it out, and the core now falls out. Use a flat head screwdriver to open the lock.
I noticed my Home Depot has a few, hidden on the top shelf, American Locks for sale. Some brass body Series 20s and 40s and a beefy (by Master standards) steel body Series 50. All of these are $13 and under! The 50 even comes with all security pins plus some nice bitting.
I started binge-watching LPL 2 days ago, I took out a cheap Chinese lockpick set to mess around... this is the lock I tried learning on - did not go well. lol Don't worry, now I'm using a practice lock.
I picked (har har) one of these up at my local hardware store. I think it has a serious security vulnerability in the form of that rubber shield. If it gets damaged or removed, the pin that holds the core in gets really loose. That said, I was able to address the issue by removing the rubber shroud and shortening the screw that secures the holding pin.
This lock has a 6 pin core with 5 chambers populated and after a little work, I re-pinned mine with spools and a 6th pin that catches the tip of the key. Master may have started using spools after I got mine. I only had standard pins in the core
I just saw the first episode of many videos blowing away locks with various firearms and this lock was declared to have survived all attempts at blowing the lock open with gunfire. Now if master would just improve the core to make it more pick and drill resistant.
I have no problem picking this one, it’s just the amount of tension needed to rotate the core is the problem with me because my TOK tension bar slips out of it occasionally
Just an idea for this series: As you get these picked open in like a minute or so, wouldnt it make the episodes a bit longer if you'd test the padlocks for multiple aspects? F.e. Shimming, picking, raking.. Also.. I think it would give a better and 'deeper' review of them. More work I know, the videos are nice as they are, just an idea.. :) keep up the great work ;)
Just picked one of these up. Lots of spools, but not a difficult pick even for a novice like me. Although, i went in with bottom keyway tension and a short hook. ~$30 at Home Depot and great practice feeling “counter rotation”.
You can gut the lock just remove the cover then take a screwdriver and there’s a screw down the shackle hole after you remove the cover remove the core then use a cer clip to push out the cover on the core and pins then you take the pins and pieces on the lock and put them on your pinning tray.
Interesting - the ones we buy from Home Depot here in Toronto have a clip on the back of the core allowing a full gut (they also use chrome plated "ugly" keys)
You talk about all the different pins, spools, bump protection. Do you have a video discussing what each does and why one spool is better than a serrated etc.? It would be great to know what makes a good lock and how to re-key a lock with the best combination to make it harder to pick than off the shelf. I understand all the drill pins and anti drill protection and hardened bodies but i never see you talk about what the pins do to make it harder. I do say you have me rethinking all my Master locks i buy for locking up various items around the house and doors.
Nickolas Pizzalato switch your master locks for abus’ and go watch bosnian bills videos about security pins. He has one on spools and one on serrated. He explains what they do and shows the feedback a picker would feel. He doesn’t exactly tell you the best way to pin up a lock but ill tell you now: a lot of high-low action between the pin heights, use a tap and serrate each chamber, use different combinations of HIGH QUALITY security pins and the farther back in the lock you go, the higher you want the high cuts to be
When you say high cuts towards the back, are you saying deeper cuts or less? I have seen where he says things about the "Bitting" which i can see where the more random a key looks vs a flatter profile i would assume more secure.
Nickolas Pizzalato yeah, a key that has bad bitting looks fairly flat. And by higher cuts towards the back i mean that if someone was to try and pick it they would have to reach very high up into the back of the lock. And by low cuts i mean that the pin in front of the high cut would be so low that if someone tried to pick it, they would ‘overset’ or push that in up too high, just to reach the very high cut behind it. Like i said go watch some bosnian bill videos and it will be very informational. Also, there is something to be said about buying higher quality locks than just kwikset and schlage. There are MANNNY lock companies just google high security door locks for home. Or something like that.
How many locks do you actually own? You're given or sent quite a lot it seems, but here you've bought a lock and presumably you own a lot more. I enjoy the heck out of your videos and this is a good series idea.
What kind of picks do you have? I dont know where to look for some good picks/tension wrenches and I'd like to get into lock picking but that's kinda hard without the picks or wrenches

I recently started learning lockpicking as a hobby, and I picked up this lock, and I've been encountering something strange in it. When the cylinder is rotated even the smallest degree in either direction, something seems to drop and block the keyway making it impossible to push behind it to get to the deeper pins or pull back forward again if I got the pick deeper in the keyway before whatever-the-thing-is dropped down. I can't figure out what this thing is, and if it's some new security measure since LPL just cruised through the same model lock without any mention of any trouble. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
How long does it take to become an experienced picker? This would be a very handy skill. For a non criminal of course. Is there a kit you would reccomend for a beginner?
When you can look at the key and practice before hand and then do a video on it... it's pretty easy. He knows how to SPP and knows where the binder or each pin needs to be... also, knows how to get a false set due to practicing it on any particular lock. It's much more difficult when you have a lock with no clue on the pinning and takes way longer to pick unless the lock is easily raked or can be shimmed without using destructive methods just to name a few. In other words... You need to practice all kinds. LPL makes it look easy, but it's not in a real world environment. It takes patience and depending on the pinning, key way, security pins etc etc... it's not something you can just do in a few minutes.
What are the advantages of using octa(?)gonal shackles over round shackles? Seems like octagonal shackles would just make it easier to break the shackles with a bolt cutter
n addition to the more surface area, if you can get your bolt cutter to bite into one of the corners, you have even more metal to go through than you do at the sides. That said if you can get a bite, you don't end up cutting through all of the shackle. As demonstrated in an earlier vid, these locks also tend to not have shackles that turn as easily with the ball bearings. So you end up (usually) having to cut the shackle twice.
the two-wrench technique he used recently is (somewhat) thwarted by ball bearing lockng mechanism, still, it's a real jaw-dropper for me to know my trailer is basically unlocked for anyone with two 18mm wrenches and at least one arm or leg ...
That's pretty good for a master lock.
A picker with a little exp. with security pins wont have trouble with it, but nice to see it not opened by a broken toothpick for a change.

@Jake Heke lol not likely, and if so not for long. somebody would shut that down real quick before long.

I would like to see how this lock would handle the brute force attack with the double wrenches.
Sorry should have mentioned love the videos keep up the great work.
As high as the shackle is you probably have to wedge something in there to even attempt it
the two-wrench technique he used recently is (somewhat) thwarted by ball bearing lockng mechanism, still, it's a real jaw-dropper for me to know my trailer is basically unlocked for anyone with two 18mm wrenches and at least one arm or leg ...
ikr? a wise man once said, physics is a bitch.
It would be a nice video to see that attack. Brute force is the most often method of attacking a lock.
so what the best padlock ? with very high security ?
I just bought the same lock and gutted it. My first lock to gut.
