  • This is my friend's Gemunder guitar. It's been in his basement, in a case, for years. He doesn't know where or when he got it. He suspects his Dad got it a yard sale years ago.
Not too long ago I suggested he get a luthier to look at it and see if it can be playable. The result is a beautiful, clear acoustic sound. The luthier had not heard of Gemunder guitars but suggested this may be quite old. We don't know what year it was made.
Does anyone know anything about these guitars?

August Gemunder was a New York company that was founded in 1846 that was primarily known for its violins. They also made guitars that they sold out of their store front and through catalogs. Your F model guitar is described in the catalog as a concert size with Brazilian rosewood back and sides and a spruce top. The model retailed for $75 in 1890.

A quick net search shows that the company ceased around 1946, and had been in production for around 100 years before that. No telling exactly how old your guitar is…my guess is anywhere from the turn of the century up into the 30’s.
