The importance of designing one's environment to support desired behaviors is emphasized, rather than relying solely on willpower. The conversation also touches on the privilege required to make certain choices and the potential for exploitation in a world driven by profit. The conversation explored the importance of societal influence in driving change, the potential dangers of AI and social media, the benefits of living in a more connected and present way, and the need for choice and purpose in our lives.
    Takeaways
    - AI is already changing lives and will continue to do so in the future
    - Finding meaning and purpose in work is important for personal well-being
    - Constraints can enhance creativity and engagement
    - Balancing choice and constraints is key to a fulfilling life
    - Aligning work with personal values and goals leads to greater satisfaction - The number of choices available to individuals may increase with advancements in AI, but it is important to consider the impact of these choices on overall well-being.
    - Designing one's environment to support desired behaviors can be more effective than relying solely on willpower.
    - Privilege plays a role in the ability to make certain choices, and there is a need to address systemic issues to ensure equitable access to opportunities.
    - The potential for exploitation exists in a world driven by profit, and there is a need for responsible governance and corporate responsibility to mitigate this risk. Change often comes from societal pressure and movements, rather than companies or institutions acting on their own.
    - The use of AI and social media can lead to a loss of critical thinking and a lack of presence in our lives.
    - Living in a more connected and present way, such as through co-living or co-housing communities, can provide grounding and a sense of agency.
    - Choice and purpose are essential for a fulfilling life, and it is important to design our lives in a way that aligns with our values and goals.

I don't understand why people would fear not having to go to work. As far as I am concerned work has always been an open prison, you are free to request a transfer to another prison or be given better duties but unless you happen to be independently wealthy then you remain a prisoner.
Once free of work then you are free to do whatever you want to do without having to apply to be allowed to do it...

I can personally attest to this. Back in 2010, while I was on welfare, I discovered my love for 3D animation and filmmaking through CZcams. At the time, animators couldn't even earn money from their videos, but I worked hard anyway because it was my passion. I was so into it that I’d often spend over 12 hours or more a day working on my animations, it was *that fulfilling* to me.
My point is that there are undoubtedly countless people out there like that, but they find themselves juggling two jobs and other responsibilities, which leaves them with hardly any time to pursue their passion.

It's funny how those, who worry the most about loss of meaning, don't even have a job. If you love what you are doing, nobody will force you to stop. You may not make money on it anymore, but that won't matter.
I personally doing my dream job, developing computer games, and it pays very well too, but it's still a job. I can't decide what project I'm working on, how much I work and when, and I can't do anything about the management's stupid decisions.

Some people are highly conscientious (orderly and industrious) by temperament. It's baked into their being, and not having something productive to do makes them wither and die. Some people are the opposite, and work is torture. We need a society where people have the choice whether, and how, to work.

I think it's because David Shapiro's vision of the future is extremely optimistic. If AGI replaced 80% of jobs today, jobs would likely collapse into 5 or 6 categories. Owner of AI/Algorithms/ Factories/ Robots, government regulating that AI, military/ security protecting aforementioned people, servants tending to aforementioned people (cooks, masseuse, valets, media producers, prostitutes, etc.), scientists and researchers and possibly the people working jobs AI has not yet replaced, but might eventually. The rest would likely be provided with enough to not starve most of the time and produce enough children to keep the job market competitive.
Maybe I'm just an old cynic, but I don't see people who claw their way up to a position of power being as charitable as the average person, if the CEO/President/Chairman/Owner was that kind, egalitarian and benevolent they would not be in the position they are in.

  • @GP-wv7qn

i dont think i agree that most people are over the peak where comfort begins to harm them. I also don’t think its right to restrict people from having the choice. sure it will take some getting used to, and not everyone will break the loop of overcomfort. but, just like how it would be silly to say we should go back to starving so that chocolate would be healthy again, we shouldnt strive to live in a world where the option of comfort is purposefully limited. whats better is letting people have the choice to use moderation.

    • @GP-wv7qn
      @GP-wv7qn Před měsícem +4

also one extra point: i think if abundance and comfort were really the cause of things like obesity and diabetes, we wouldnt be seeing them disproportionately affecting low income folk. by that logic the richer you get, the fatter you would be.

The discussion about structuring the way you live and what your available choices are as an alternative to pure willpower is something I resonate with, but had not previously found the words for. I live with my wife and a roommate, and have (possibly due to undiagnosed neurological quirkiness) never been able to maintain traditional employment, which itself has enough material for a Netflix special. As a result, I decided to become a homemaker, and was able to start balancing house care with not only making myself more available to my circle, whether as a friend or an artistic collaborator, but also in improving myself, and making more time for my wife and strengthening our marriage. This has added a ton of value to my life, as I can be productive even if there's not really a strong income to back it up. However, I have a strong support system, so I know this is a privileged position and is not currently possible for most people.

I am filled with gratitude for the immense liberty that allows me to shape my daily routine according to my preferences and needs. This autonomy enables me to engage in various endeavours that align with my interests and goals and fills me with a sense of empowerment. Whether it's dedicating time to creative pursuits, indulging in leisurely activities, or fulfilling responsibilities, I am appreciative of the opportunity to tailor my schedule to my desires. This freedom propels me to explore new avenues of personal growth and fulfilment, making each day a journey of empowerment and autonomy. By exercising this freedom of choice, I can fully immerse myself in experiences that enrich my life and contribute to my overall well-being. Hence, I embrace the privilege of directing my daily activities, recognizing it as a fundamental aspect of living a fulfilling and satisfying life.

I think that we are almost to the last generation that grows up with music written by humans as the main form of music. Live music will forever be a thing, in fact it will be more popular in the future as it will be a spectacle to see human music. What made me think of this was the conversation around choice paralysis, products like suno AI will eventually take over completely in my opinion. Lets say i want to learn about disco i could say hey suno some disco music, keep it clean this is family time. That's a lot easier than trying to expand your disco knowledge slowly by burning through lots of songs you might not like. Now you can learn about the music genre at home and then find local performances easily through the internet. it will also be far cheaper to play AI music since musicians and producers are expensive at least right now.

Being cut in my freedom, ergo having to go to work, in my thank god healthy state is the primary source of suffering. Also humans love to compete. But it'll be much healthier if they compete in sports (for me it's bouldering and running) than compete on the computer all day for more money then your neighbor. Children naturally want to go out and move their body, so it's not all about conservation of energy. We want to play because it makes us better at hunting and defending (evolutionary speaking). But school and work indoctrination is weaning us from the want to go outside, they suck our energy like vampires suck blood.

While some argue that regular dressing gowns or hooded blankets offer similar benefits, they overlook the superior warmth and versatility of Oodies. Despite their higher price and storage challenges, Oodies are highly valued for their comfort, warmth, and diverse designs, making them a worthwhile investment, particularly during times of rising heating costs. Yaas! A lot of the issues today are because we live in an environment we didn't adapt for, and it's only going to get worse.
What is your purpose if you don't have to fight for survival? We'll have to fight for meaning in our lives.
On a long enough timeline, we'll be able to fine grain adjust our brain chemistry, we'll be able to find meaning in anything. We'll be able to find fulfillment staring at a wall if we want too.
We won't get rid of money, money is necessary for robust resource allocation, but it will become an invisible protocol, like TCP/IP.
Corporations in the legal sense, a contract with government that exchanges liability/responsibility for ownership, will mostly go by the wayside, but companies will always exist, but they will mostly be run by autonomous AIs. AIs will be able to run companies better than any person and will eventually outcompete almost all people. People will run companies for the fulfillment, the meaning, the desire to build things, but AI will bring prosperity to the poorest people in the world.
AI and cryptos will out compete governments too, and they'll be purely and explicitly consensual. In 100 years, the idea of humans governing humans will be archaic and viewed similarly to slavery. We evolved to live in governed tribes, not world empires. AI won't have this evolved tribalist baggage, at least not for a long time, though they may evolve to have similar sentiments just as we did.

Our unit a 4 bed room is about 1200 a month for rent and if it were a house or similar town house it would be made 3 X more expensive in this city.
