- I recently came across a post on X of a photo of a receipt that shows that Los Angeles restaurants are charging a 4% “LA Health” fee. This is getting outrageous. I have changed my mind on tipping.

Tiping has been turned from a voluntary gesture of gratitude for service well done into emotional blackmail.
Good thing I have little emotion
Oh, you poor thing.
@@marcevan1141 quite the petulant comment. Cheers for showing us your shallow and inarticulate stance up front.
VERY WELL SAID!!!!!!
@@jorandar1 I happen to make my living as a waiter, schmuck. The fact that anyone would characterize tipping as "emotional blackmail" is a clear indication that psychiatric treatment is needed. Quickly.
I'm from Europe. Here we tip only when the service was extremly exquisite. Tipping mediocre service makes no sense to us.
I do the same, most European contries have a minimum wage that the employee is paid, so they don't need outrageous fees to make up their wages
If you tip wait staff at all, you will one day wind up doing it all the time. Unfortunately, that is how it snuck up on us in America. Even in America, though, people generally don't tip their daycare worker, no matter how good the service was, and daycare workers are on their feet all day, playing games, changing diapers and exhausting themselves. Daycare employees are underpaid, and nobody wants their child mistreated because they failed to tip the daycare worker, yet nobody does tip daycare staff, because no parent actually fears their child will be mistreated. They know the daycare employee who mistreats a child (regardless of whether that employee got a tip or not) would be fired. That's a good system to leave in place. If you like your daycare worker, give her a gift, not a tip. Don't get an expectation from them going in the first place.
tipping has gotten crazy here because the employer tells the worker that don't worry the pay is lower because you will get tips to offset the wage you are getting. so if someone doesn't tip they see it as their wages getting shorted
If you tip wait staff at all, it will eventually become an expectation that you do it all the time. That is how it snuck up on us Americans. After all, if the waitress did everything right, were you not impressed? If your drink came a bit late, did you not notice how crowded the restaurant is? etc. Even in America, we still don't tip daycare workers, and daycare employees are on their feet all day, exhausting themselves entertaining kids and changing diapers. They also tend to be underpaid, but nobody fears that if they fail to tip the daycare staff that their child will be mistreated. That's because that daycare employee would be fired for mistreating a child, whether they got a tip or not. That's a good system to leave in place. If you like your daycare worker, get her a gift, not a tip. Don't get an expectation for tips started among employees in industries that aren't already tipped, so we won't wind up with the same mess we have now with the food service industry.
Exactly !!!
I used to be all for tipping. It wasn't even a question. Now it is ridiculous. I will not give in to this. I will tip when I choose to.
I agree that many places have taken it to a whole new level, but when you go to a sit down restaurant, you are paying for the food. The tip is for the service provided- taking your order, bringing your drinks, refilling your drinks, bringing out your food, making sure you are having a good experience. Do you at least agree with that?
As one tourist put it who visited the USA, " It's like going to a country of beggars. Pay them a living wage."
"Paying a living wage"? Sounds like socialism and anti-freedom brother
@@rep-vile no it doesn’t. It means a fair wage to balance out the cost-of-living ratio. It’s really not that hard to figure out. It’s basic math.
@BaysideFL
Im pretty sure he's being sarcastic.
Although you might never know with Candace Owens fans 😅
It's my understanding that America is really the only country that does this.... In Japan it's even considered an insult to try and tip someone...
Yep and some other European countries too from what I remember with traveling. In most countries, you won't be given a check with the "tip" line, let alone be given those 18%, 20%, 25% options. To places where it's not rude, it's common courtesy but it's never forced (if anything it gives the incentive to give). The other day I was given a check with 18% fee included, said to support the LA minimum wage regulations and how it's not a tip. Baffling to say the least.
I have a solution don’t eat out
Same in Australia. We just don’t expect it at all and will be embarrassed if offered
@@Princessgdawell at least they were honest in calling it a few instead of a mandatory tip. When I lived in Hawaii the more upscale restaurants decided your tip for you depending on the number of people in your party and what they ordered. I thought it was so sad because tipping is voluntary and you the customer decide your tip based on the service, not the number of people in your party. But most people just paid it so they wouldn't have to cause a scene about it. When we went, we told the manager to remove the mandatory tip from the bill as it was up to us to decide unless it was posted in public view how they decide tipping will be. He did remove it, but he wasn't happy about it, but we did tip the girl directly with cash because she did a great job and so she would have to share it unless she wanted to.
In Australia, they don't tip. Want to know why? Because THEY MAKE $26 AN HOUR. In America they make MINIMUM WAGE! Bartending and waiting tables in AMERICA is hard work and stressful. You ppl don't see what goes on behind the scenes in the kitchen, etc.. You ppl don't see how waiters/waitresses get disrespected by guest. Stop being opinionated about things you know nothing about.
I’m getting tired of being taxed for everything! It’s ridiculous how we cannot keep the majority of our income and what we accumulate throughout our lives.
Wat makes it worth is how Americans think they can play the game and be successful. Americans will make excuses for why the IRS needs to rob us. It's for our own good.
If you are tired, force corporations to pay a living wage.
@@factsnotfeelings3247taxes are dissentthan wages. Get work skills of you want a better salary
Spoken like a true liberal F
Stop buying your $6 coffee at starbucks. You can keep the majority of your income, and live off your savings. But its up to you to decide what you spend it on.
I also have been a waitress and a person who tips very well. But, you are correct the "expected" tip has become outrageous. My favorite time for asking for a tip....we were traveling and on the road, stopped at a McDonalds for a quick lunch. Walked in and all employees kept their backs to us and wouldn't even acknowledge us. We finally went to the kiosk and placed our order and there it was: a request for a tip. For what? I'm doing everything except actually cooking the burger. I placed my order and got my own drink and then I cleared the table. I think I should have been tipped!
I was visiting the US from the UK where tipping isn't nearly such a big thing.i was expecting problems but I didn't realise how prevalent it was.Small restaurants were suggesting a 34% tip,a pottery shop suggested a 20% tip for the mug I took a minute to purchase as did a bookstore. The worst was in a supermarket where I pushed my trolley round, selected my groceries, swiped them through a self service till and bagged them up myself. For the privilege of doing all that,a 22% tip was suggested. There was no option shown for 0%.I did ask and the assistant said everyone tips.I just left my shopping and walked out.I did that everywhere, regardless of the dirty looks and in two cases, outright abuse. If someone goes above and beyond what they're paid to due then of course I'll tip but that never happened.
Whatever area you where in is even worse than I’ve seen living in the US. I have seen tipping in every restaurant, even fast food where they are not waiting on anyone. That is ridiculous enough! I have never seen it in grocery stores or where no tip is not an option. That’s just highway robbery! I am part of the movement to refuse this blackmail.
Tipping should be abolished. If employers can’t afford to pay their employees then they should not be in business.
Nobody should have to cater to your needs even if they are paid so stay home.
Waitresses don't want a normal wage, they want to work off tips because most of the time they make more money on tips than they would with a normal wage. To add a stupid health and happiness tax on top of that is the height of absurdity. It's just the companies trying to get away with paying less money out of pocket so they can make more profit.
So no restaurants then. Make your own food
@@DivergentDroidI agree that extra tax is wild and I never heard of it.
There have been restaurants that where exactly that in the USA,
But because people did not like they where 20% more expensive than the "TIP mandated" restaurant, people did not go there.
even though they would gladly tip 25% on top of their bill.
So 99% of them FAILED, because people rather tax themselves, 25% instead of paying 20% more and not be forced to tip
From Reddit: Noticed this the other day at the checkout in the airport. After I inserted my card I was prompted to make a selection before completing my transaction. 5%, 10%, 15%, or "other". There was no option to skip, & I was required to select a tip to continue. I was purchasing a bottle of water from the kiosk.
If you feel that a tip is not necessary and there is no "skip" option, select "other" and enter the value at $0.00.
Airports…yes, these self serve kiosks ask for a tip…seen it in 3-4 usa cities….I saw it and said Wait….I should get .50 off for me doing work, scanning and paying. Note. I’m pretty sure you can hit Other..and tip.01 cent.

Why are tipped employees exempt from Minimum Wage earnings? Stop subsidizing restaurant and business owners payroll, let them pay a living wage.
This is actually a common misconception - tipped employees do earn minimum wage no matter what. If the tips don't amount to minimum wage, then federal law states that the employer must make up those wages and pay the employee the difference. Basically, as stated in the video, tipping let's the employer pay their employers on the *customer's* dollar, instead of their own.
This is directly from the US Department of Labor website:
"If the employee's tips combined with the employer's direct wages of at least $2.13 per hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference. Many states, however, require higher direct wage amounts for tipped employees."
@@penguu2387you have obviously never worked as a tipped employee. It doesn’t work all easy peasy as you explained. I have never had a check that made up the difference of not making minimum wage… EVER!

I am Australian & you are not a monster, tips should be earned not given ALWAYS. The US has gotten out of control with this shit!!!!
you have to tip everywhere. In a bar you had to tip the barman each time you got a drink or they wouldn't serve you next time.
And in addition to that, nobody needs to be getting asked for a tip for takeway food and drink. Ever
As an American, I say amen! I will tip if I believe the individual went beyond the job requirements or if I asked the individual to do something extra. There’s no law in place anywhere that states I must tip regardless the quality of the service.
As an Australian I agree we have NEVER had a tipping culture although some places are trying to americanise and offer a voluntary tip but we say NO. it is the responsibility of the owner to pay their staff fair wages and if that means raising their prices so be it, it will be our choice as the consumer if we want to pay the price for that food/item. Should never be the responsibility of patrons or staff.
@@joshuafoster8726 Yes, I agree with you. Australia 🇦🇺 is one country I’ve wanted to visit . I’ve watched travel videos of your country…so interesting!

It goes with our current general school and work "get paid (reward, good grade, trophy) for doing nothing". We train kids early to expect something for nothing.

Omg yes!!! The video of the lady and the wedding dress shop! The store that sold me my wedding dress had a tipping option. I did tip because I had an awful experience earlier in the day at the first place I went to. I had confirmed that the dress I was looking for was at that first store. They said yes and so I went. They asked for the dress sku number which I gave them 3 DIFFERENT TIMES! Because the young lady kept writing it wrong. They bought me the wrong dress each time and then they said we don’t have it what would you like to see? So I told them the exact style. Trumpet only, no lace, with sleeves. They bought me nothing but sleeveless ball gowns with lace! 😂 measured me but continued to bring me dresses that wouldn’t even come close to fitting me. I am a size 10-12 and they boasted that they had dresses up to size 22. Then they finally realized they did have the dress I was asking for but but told my sister they would not bring it out because it was no where near my size and they believed nothing in the store would fit me. My sister was furious but I just wanted to leave. Looked for a different store found it. It was 45 mins away. I called she confirmed that she had it but informed me she was closing early and leaving for the weekend. She told me if I could make it there in the next hour she would stay open for me. As soon as I arrived someone was leaving, she closed the store behind us. Had the dress ready. Measured me and said this is not your size but don’t you worry it’s just for you to get an idea. I only tried on one dress. She gave me all sorts of pointers about my dress made me feel like the most stunning bride ever and every visit to her afterwards which was about 2 I believe were awesome. Sorry long story short. She lifted my spirits and took her time even though she was clearly in a hurry. She made me feel taken care of and I felt she deserved a tip. But yes this is a special circumstance and I believe if business like this one are just doing the job then tipping should not be obligatory in any way and it’s up to the customers discretion.

As an Australian, I felt the tipping culture turned Americans into a nation of beggers. Everyone was walking around with their hand out and a sob story about how they weren't being paid by their employers. It was exhausting to be on the receiving end of the constant emotional blackmail and then having to put a dollar amount to how I judged their performance. It must be worse, in addition to doing your job, all day every day having to beg to be paid for it. Get rid of it. Pay your workers.
nd people who dont tip, suddenly they hate and spit in food or play more games. So disgusting and fake. The thing is that people feel sorry for the servers, but actually if offered a good wage a lot would turn it down, because they are making better money on tips than a lot of american teachers make in salary. They dont want a fair wage. They want to play psychological games of fear, blackmail, and use nice people's decency against them. It is absurd. Even hairdressers who own their own businesses get angry and post online if they dont get tips. It is your business, you clown.

A tip used to always be an upfront thing. Tip actually is an acronym for "to insure promptness". However, I do absolutely agree it's become ridiculously out of control. When I was a server for $2.19/hr over 20 years ago, it was a stepping stone job for me. It's not meant to be a life long career choice.
I went to visit my family in Oregon this past November. I stopped at a Walmart near my hotel for some toiletries. I scanned everything at the self checkout and was asked on the display if I wanted to tip. Who would I be tipping, if I decided to do so? I did all of the work.
Stop letting businesses suck your hard earned money out if you. It is their nirmal job. I am not getting a tip for doing my job.
Uber Eats is even worst. You pay for your food, plus taxes, plus the service fee, plus the delivery fee, plus a tip. Your meal will go from $22 to $64 real quick.
that why I under stand why Uber eats , drivers get mad at us for not tipping when there a Tip Plus $8, $9,$22
I don't mind tipping drivers, and Uber drivers are basically working on commission--they get paid by the jobs they accept, not hourly.
Uber Eats and Door Dash drivers are NOT paid by the company. Yes they offer drivers $2 for the order. But nobody in their right mind is going to spend $1.50 in gas to deliver you an order for $2. Not to mention they also have to pay taxes on that money. Sorry but your 'tip' isn't a tip. It's a bid for service. If you don't want to bid, then go pick it up yourself.
I don't know how it works at Uber Eats, but Door Dash delivery drivers make about $2 - $3 per order, and it can take 30 minutes to complete a delivery (they have to wait at the restaurant often times for 10 - 20 minutes for your food).
Basically, they get paid less than minimum wage, and gas is not paid for.
The $10 delivery fee (or whatever price) largely goes to Door Dash for the executives and the support employees, which there a lot of.
If you don't put a tip on there ahead of time, no one will pick it up for a while. Sometimes 30 - 60 minutes after the food is ready. Why? Because DoorDash will send the option to all drivers in the area for $2 (no tip added). They all say no. Five minutes later, it is increased to $2.25. They all say no. Only after 30 minutes or so do most of these orders increase in payout that a driver will take it.
Back in 2020, the minimum pay was $5. In one year, they lowered to $3, then $2. And right when the 2021 gas hike hit and doubles gas prices. DoorDash is greedy. Blame them, not the driver.
Often, you think that it is the driver's fault for being late, so you don't tip. But it is the DoorDash system at fault.
And so many people don't want to tip no matter how good the service is. They look for reasons to not tip. It takes 30 minutes to deliver, so they think to themselves, 'well it should taken 20 minutes. I am not tipping'
It takes 20 minutes to delivery, they think to themselves, it should have taken 15 minutes. I am not tipping.
Driver gets there in 5 minutes? Well I was in the bathroom, that is too fast. I am not tipping.
Driver knocks too loud? That's rude. I am not tipping.
Driver doesn't smile properly or smiles too much? 'What the hell is their problem?' I am not tipping.
I asked for contactless delivery, but they handed me the food directly. So I am not tipping.
They just left the food at the door, but I was going to hand them cash for a tip. Well it's their fault for leaving, so I guess I am not tipping.
(You can't win. People look for any excuse.)
Tip ahead of time and you will most likely get your food faster.
Or if you can't afford it, go get the food yourself. If that seems like too much trouble, then consider that that is the reason you are suppose to tip in the first place: for service you would not want to do yourself.
I tried DoorDash once .. never again ! A subway footlong that was 14 at the restaurant cost 27 having it delivered !!.. I work 2 jobs and wanted my son to have sandwich delivered for dinner .., NEVER AGAIN 😱
The local Five Guys burger place has been adding a 4-5% "Cook/Kitchen" fee to the bill. This is the kind of place where you pick up your own food, fill your own drink cup, locate your own ketchup, and find your own place to sit. I haven't been back. Just remembered that I have my own kitchen and I am the cook.

I bet that most of their employees are only part time and don't even get any sort of health insurance. Might even only cover the healthcare for the owners. It's especially unnerving when a customer is lowly paid at some job that doesn't provide any benefits and doesn't get tipped for what they do while working their butts off, but then are being guilted into forking out all of these extras for others who never tip them. (Not necessarily that they should either.)

The worst story I have heard: I have been following a YT family from another country for the past couple of years. They recently made a trip to the United States from a country where tipping is rare, so they were aware that we tipped for sit down meals here, but didn't realize how bad the tipping culture had become. They were staying at a hotel with an attached restaurant and went there for breakfast and left a modest tip for the server. Then a knock came at their hotel room's door a few minutes after they had arrived back in their room. It was their server asking if "she had done anything wrong as they had left such a lousy tip." Can you imagine? Chasing down a family visiting from another country to demand a better tip? Shameless.
You’d get fired for that.

For what? We put in our own order, went to get our own drinks, picked up our order when our number was called, even cleared our table after eating. If anything, they should have tipped us!! 🙄🤦🏻♀️ I always immediately hit “NO” to the tip request. I used to be a server there too years ago, but I am not tipping the other staff for doing their jobs.
When I was in the US (Vegas) and went to Grand Canyon, we paid for a flight from Vegas to Grand Canyon. As we were getting off, the pilot was standing at the exit collecting tips from the passengers. What did the flight money go to if they need to be collecting tips? Made me feel super uncomfortable with the whole American culture.
I was in Austin last weekend and was charged a 3% "Kitchen Appreciation Fee"... Didn't matter if the food was cold or late, straight up taxed by them without any warning.
What's worse is that the charged it as a service accounting BEFORE sales tax. So I paid sales tax on this thing like it was a product I bought. Straight up taxed on a tax.
Forced tipping should be illegalized
I'm honestly not surprised. Austin is basically a tiny California in the middle of Texas.
I might be wrong, here, but do not think that taxing a tip is legal.

I went to pick up takeout Thai food at a local restaurant here in Redlands, California. I had already calculated the total before I went. The cashier handed me the little machine to insert my credit card and then she quickly took it back before I was able to pay. She said, “oh wait a second” and handed it back to me. Now the charge was even higher, so I asked her about it. She told me that she included a 20% tip, because it’s takeout. When I said, no, I’m not paying a 20% tip on takeout she said, “no problem”, took the machine back and changed it to an 18% tip. I haven’t been back to the restaurant and have no plans to return. 😡

New Zealand here. We don't tip generally. People get the wages they deserve and the customers are not meant to be the ones to subsidise them.
I dislike the tipping culture here in the US, but you pay an average of $22 US for a meal with no tip, and here we pay an average of $15 for the same meal but are expected to tip. Either way, the customer is subsidizing the pay of the waitstaff.
@@texasflooringif you added it up I bet we in the U.S. still pay more.
The price is a few bucks lower. But you tip way more than just a few bucks. So in the end we are most likely still paying more
AMEN to that!
What has happened in the US and many other countries is we no longer know who or why we are tipping. There is a minimum wage in the US (and all 50 states have their own too) for waitstaff and non-waitstaff. Waitstaff get a couple bucks an hour and then tips. Non-waitstaff get minimum wage. Then we get baristas, then counter service, then this, then that. We should only be tipping those who fall under the "waitstaff" exclusion and only get a couple bucks an hour. I just don't know anymore who that is.
I cannot agree more, I ordered a pizza online for pick-up that means me getting in my car and going to pick it up when it's done. During the checkout of online ordering, they asked for a tip. A tip for what I said? making my pizza? Don't they get paid for that? It's just ridiculous.
Sadly no, a lot of them don’t. The employers now use that as an excuse not to pay their employees. If you’re a tipped worker you get $2.34 /hr. So now, they’ll put you on To-go and not bat an eye. That’s why you are asked to tip on To-Go orders. It’s get the restaurant out of paying someone an actual wage. I mean, pizza cooks and stuff like that probably make a decent wage but you never know. Some places take the servers tips and tip out the cooks and such. They make $15-30/hr, servers make $2.34
This may be true some places but not everywhere.
Or when you get there to pickup, even after paying online, the give you a receipt to sign with a tip line, lol.
I recently had the same thing happen and when I didn’t tip I was afraid they were going to do something to my pizza

In Brazil is not mandatory at all to tip anywhere. If you want, you tip 10%. I never get why the cook doesn't get tips, the cashier doesn't, the cleaning guy doesn't. Only the waiters, for doing what they are supposed to do (????) USA is weird.
I went to a restaurant in 2001 that included the tip in the bill. I have never been back and will NEVER go back. It has cost them a hell of a lot more than the tip.
I used to drive charter buses, and one lady gave me a one-dollar tip, which was not expected. I was totally flattered.
Been living in Asia for the past 6 years. One of the many benefits here is you get great service and they do not expect a tip. When I feel the service is good, I can tip them the equivalent of 1 or 2 dollars and they are elated.
Ask where the tips are going. I went to a popular franchise and asked this, they flat out told me they don’t get to keep the tips, all of it goes to management. This is becoming more and more common. Criminal!

I’m from Mexico and this tipping situation is becoming a huge problem too, just a few days ago my mom, brother and I went to a fancy restaurant near my home which we like a lot, it’s Easter season and everybody’s on vacations and the place was full, we were OK we knew that our food may take some time to be prepared but the waiters were very rude, our food was cold and eve frozen however the manager of the place was kind and everything until we chose to not to tip since one of our waiter almost threw some food intentionally to my mom and the manager’s attitude changed completely. Same has happened with delivery service like Uber Eats, Rappi, Didi, etc. I have heard situations when waiters even charge the tip (which is illegal in Mexico) and turn very violent if you don’t want to pay the tip.
My high and low tipping point was once I tipped the waitress $25.00 on a $35.00 check because she wad the best waitress I've ever had and added so much to our evening out. On the low side a waitress at a Chinese buffet asked me "why no tip" I asked "Tip for what?" She said " for service". I asked "what service? THIS IS A SELF SERVICE BUFFET." She then said "Get out." I will never spend my money or time there again.

And the irony is, in China they don't tip. In fact, many TRUE Chinese restaurants have signs up telling you NOT to tip because it's not part of their culture. They also pay their staff normal wages as well.
Glad she kicked you out an saved your money
Tipping has become extortion. They're lucky to get your business.
Nobody pays for my healthcare. Why should I pay for theirs?
Exactly!
In fact, where’s the ‘gratuity’ to you for coming in and helping to support their business?
Seriously, they set a price for the meal. You agreed and paid that price.
So because it wasn’t BURNT or CRAP you should pay extra?
Or:
A mediocre waitress serves you. She’s lucky not to get complained on about the poor service, and fired.
But if the waitress is extra, ensuring my dining experience is pleasurable, then heck yes I want to leave her a tip to indicate my appreciation for her service.
*I still prefer, and plan ahead for, leaving cash on the table.
Even knowing I’m debit/credit the meal, I stop and get cash for the gratuity (which allows me to specify this for the cook/this for the server/this for bus staff).
I’ve also NOT tipped a very poor server, but went and gave $50 to the cooks. Meal was great but my waitress ruined the dining experience with poor service.
"Nobody pays for my healthcare. Why should I pay for theirs?" Like ypu I noticed the tipping culture is nuts. It seems everyone wants a tip for doing nothing or very little at all. I miss the days where fifteen percent was quite generous. But this twenty and twenty five percent is insane. But it's ok I am happier and healthier and save money at the same time. I really do feel bad for the servers who put in a hard day's work and don't get paid for what they're worth. I am done with modern day restaurant culture. The last time I actually sat down at a restaurant. My service was terrible.
Everyone benefits from killing the tipping culture.
Yep, i’ve been saying it for years. It’s funny how people will fall all over themselves to tip their waiter and treat them well just for making three or four trips to their table, and yet we treat their nurse like a complete slave. I can guarantee you that if you total up what a waitress makes in a given night by the hour, she is making more than a nurse does. And all they’re doing is bringing food and drink to your table and they required no special education to do their job. Yet a nurse is very educated and has a much greater degree of liability in doing their job, and the waitress has none. Nobody ever offered me a big tip for cleaning up their bowel accident, or the vomit all over themselves in their bed, and most people would be horrified if I expected it or demanded it they see it as a part of my job just like delivering food and drinks to my restaurant table is a part of a waiters job yet they get paid extra for doing their job. To be honest, I would never expect or accept a tip with some kindness and gratitude is always appreciated, but not always given.
My husband and i went to NYC last year. We had food delivered to us. The restaurant already had put a 30% tip for the delivery personnel on it!!! Without asking. Plus, the actual delivery costs!!! Well to be fair, the Starbucks employee has no obligation to be nice and bubbly to you. They do that with the hopes of getting tipped. Once they know you aren't tipping them, why should they be nice? All they are obligated to do is take your order and give you your coffee. Why is it problematic that she stopped treating you overly nice? As for Applebee's, if you put your order in online and picked it up, you shouldn't be expected to tip more than a dollar or two in my opinion. But a decent tip should still be expected if the employee is making multiple trips coming out to your car, often in bad/cold weather, dealing with special requests such as extra sauces or if your order is just complicated in general, or even if they give decent hospitality such as reading back your order to ensure everything is included and correct and asking if there is anything else you need.

We don’t have this crazy system of supplementing employees wages in Australia. Which is what tipping in America is. Employers here are required to pay a decent living wage.
Tipping is only enabling employers to rip off employees and make employers richer. You’re all mad for doing it.
you still pay for it in Australia, they just hide it in the bill. At least in America if the service stinks you can pay them less by tipping less. or on the contrary if the service is great you can pay them more by tipping more. the socialist one size fits all doesn't breed good service.
The "I'm only paid 3$/h" is a lie btw.
Their employer only gets to pay that little if they make the rest up in tips.
I was fine with it for many years as we had the option to tip 15%-20% in lieu of having 25-30% higher prices which would cover the businesses cost of paying higher wages. As with many things, people have taken it too far. It used to be 15% for average service and 18-20% for exceptional service, now it's 20-22% for average service and that's on top of hugely inflated prices. A burger meal used to cost $8 at a sit down restaurant and now it's $18-$20 so your tip went up from around $2 to $5. Now the staffers who are paid a higher wage are also asking for 20% tips. My Nephew worked at Starbucks in college and made $17 an hour plus benefits, plus tips. He wasn't getting rich, but that's pretty good for an entry level gig. Not so good for customers who are paying twice.
I Agree well said
Some folks treat the waiters like a slave, has 10 people at the table and have the server running like a crazy person, then tips ZERO…
What we’re seeing is food service places incessantly hiring. Always needing help.
They can’t keep staff because staff isn’t getting paid because customers are tired of tip culture (2.something / hr, +tips)
So food service isn’t well staffed, an app asks me to tip when I checkout - even if I ordered a Togo. It’s a mess. And it won’t change unless we stop being complicit.
Asking, begging, suggesting, expecting tips for no reason is the height of narcissism. I’m tired of it and won’t engage. Men have been expected to tip in restrooms for a hand towel handed to us by a valet. I prefer paper towels because they are disposable and far more sanitary. When I pick up take out food, I’m asked online to tip the kitchen!? Outrageous.
I am a Chef. I was raised by a union family. I advocate for my serve staff to get a living wage, and to stop tips. I get rebuked all the time. "We can make more." Bingo
When I was a server a good tip was 10%. Since I had been a server, I was always a better tipper at least 15% and often 20%. Now I'm told 20% is standard. The ingratitude is making me no longer want to tip.
I still make sure to leave just a quarter if the server is rude, not present or STONED! else I tip based on the service and attitude sometimes generously.
I was raised by a single mother who was a waitress. I tip for table service if I get good service. I have been known to leave a penny for bad service. I never leave more than 20% max though.
These servers that get paid $2 per hour often only pay taxes on their tips up to minimum wage (not all are like this) when often they make more than minimum wage with these tips. So they have money they make that is tax free . I sure didn’t make any money that was tax free when I was working!
@@Harley_Girl68I can't say that, when I was a server I was in college and made less than the minimum of $3000 required to have to file. So, I never paid taxes on tips. My issue is I used to be grateful for 10% and now 20% is expected. I recently had a conversation with a server who complained about how entitled patrons are. She cut my hair at the salon I usually go to. The woman who usually cuts my hair only charges me $10 since I get a buzz cut and it's quick and easy, this one charged me $20.
Talented educated people are forgoing moving into their careers because waitressing is more lucrative. When I leave a modest cash tip, it's my way telling the labor market that I'm okay with someone of mediocre intelligence/skills/appearance bringing me my food. Those with skills and capabilities that far exceed walking from kitchen to table with a plate of food should move on to those areas of the economy where their abilities will do more for society.
To be fair, the standard or living has gone up and money doesn't go as far as it used to. That it the main reason why it has gone from 10% to 25%.
Meanwhile, server minimum wage has gone from about $1.50 to $2.23. It hasn't been raised proportionally with regular min wage, let alone inflation.
I worked in IT in the payroll industry, and certain job have "assumed tips" and will automatically calculate that and if no tips are reported, it can trigger a flag with the IRS. If more industries make it normal to be tipped, the IRS will also start flagging those folks. You can bet these folks are not currently declaring their tips. Since most are getting tips electronically, the digital trail could be telling. They probably don't know that they are supposed to submit a form 4070 to their employer each month, and it might catch up with them.
I don’t tip anymore. It’s gotten totally out of hand !!!! Totally ridiculous!!!
As an Englishman, if anywhere adds the tip (service charger here) onto my bill then out of principle for how rude that is, I refuse to pay it and then leave no tip at all. Asking for a tip is extremely rude. They are earned through hard work and good service. Should never be expected.
Most countries don’t gouge servers on the backend like they do in the US. Half minimum wage, taxed on customer sales, and they have another 15-30% of their income to support staff. So have some compassion. It’s not the fault of the server. If you want to make a statement, complain to the manager, don’t punish the server

Now people are making $12/hour and expecting tips. I could go back to serving and make more than I ever did as a high school math teacher. So sad.
That would be their tip if I saw that. On the tip line I'd write a zero and draw an arrow to that "fee" and circle it.
I liked the way tipping used to work in this country. 40+ years ago, I worked as a waiter during college, and I consistently made more money than all the other waiters. This was for two reasons: 1) The hostess would often ask if we could handle another table. I remember one waitress in particular who would always say, "I can't handle another table...I just got two two-tops...I'm slammed." Meanwhile, I would say, "Hell yes! Give me another table and keep 'em coming!" 2) We had a busboy assigned to every 3-4 waiters. While the waiters received the tips, we were expected to share some with the busboys, as well as the bartender, though the amount was up to us. The lazy waitress would receive $80 in tips, and she might give $10 to the bartender and $5 to the busboy, taking home $65. Since I turned over far more tables, I would receive $200 in tips, and I would give $40 to the bartender and $30 to the busboy, taking home $130. Guess which waiter's tables were cleaned first and who's drinks were made first? Now I live in Colorado, and many restaurants automatically include a tip of 20-22%. This is often reflected in the level of service, as the waiters have no incentive to be better.
I was a Co. trainer for TGIF 30+ years ago! The employees were trained extensively before hitting the floor!
Your explanation is exactly what's wrong with the tipping culture. Tip is not a reward for good service. It's a BRIBE for preference. If I go out to have lunch or dinner I want to relax. I don't want to bribe people just so they clean my table or don't spit on my food. That's ridiculous. LITERALLY Canada e the US are the ONLY country where this happens. Nowhere else you need to pay money for waiters not to spit on your food or clean your table. And waiters like to play the game "I'm poor, tip me good". In Canada a lot of waiters make more money then people with DEGREES!! For what? To take orders and bring plates to someone's table. Insane. It's been over 3 years I don't go to a sit down restaurant in Canada or US. I would rather cook my own. The extra work I have is way better than dealing with entitled disgusting waiters
My favorite is when you dine out in a restaurant, just TWO people mind you, and you look at the bill and see they have already charged a service fee/gratuity and the have another line for tip/gratuity. I simply cross it out and put arrow to where they've already added it to my bill. These people are going to put themselves out of business.
I would be pleased to have the manager come speak with me to discuss the extra line item. Unless it is clearly communicated on the menu that they give you, they are not entitled to add anything but tax. I’ve had all sorts of items that I caught on my bill and frankly, it bothers me that they behave in an unprofessional manner much more than the amount an unsuspected charge represents.
My biggest pet peeve is when a manager attempts to lay something off on the employee as “their mistake”. [Ok, fair enough….who is responsible for approving that person to be employed and making certain they were properly trained prior to becoming customer facing? You are….perfect, did you review food safety with them or no? I am counting on several things from the people who intercede between me and my meal….is this the only employee that you train/validate or are you responsible for your chef, expediter, and food delivery as well?].
Point of clarification. It might sound like or seem that I am being rude and/or obnoxious but I am not….it is always with the intent of being a change maker. Pissing people off usually doesn’t accomplish much more than distracting them.
Love it when They Exploit it on Holidays; go to a Buffet Style, Self-Service Brunch and they have the Audacity to Add a Tip. Looks like Home for the Holidays.
@@rogueranger7989 thx for that heads up. I don’t “buffet” very much anymore but will look for that next time I happen to go. If I ever notice any fee not discussed prior to (or during) placing my order, it will get removed. It isn’t legal. “Discussion” includes statements printed on menus and menu boards in full view but it does not include cryptic notes which could be disregarded as innocuous noise (handbills).
100 percent agree!!! Tipping has become so ridiculous!
Recently ordered something online and when I was checking out, it asked for a tip. How ridiculous is that? I didn't even have an interaction with anyone!
I actually had a full on argument with a nail tech once over this tipping issue. Nail tech and massage therapists (my job) are allowed to accept tips. I priced my services as to what I needed to cover my business expenses and have a good income. Tips were just icing on the cake. Her attitude was she was OWED the tip. My attitude was “it’s great if they feel I earned it.” She was not going to drop the “you owe me a tip!” No girl. Your clients owe you what you charged for those nails anything above that is a GIFT! When I tip I do so because you clearly went out of your way to make sure I had exceptional service. I’m not tipping a gas pump, a kiosk, or a server that was extremely rude to me.
Yesterday, at a drive-thru chicken place, the girl pocketed $3 of my change for a $12.82 order. That's almost 25%! I stopped her and said, "Hey! I didn't get the right change" and she said that she thought I gave her a tip. I asked, "Why would you think that?" If this had been an actual tipping situation - she damn sure would have lost it by assuming a tip. The audacity of these tip chasers has certainly gotten out of control. It is the sole reason why I won't use a delivery service for food. They expect extra money on top of the service fee that you are paying for the service! lol I will not participate. Especially since the cost of take-out has gone so bonkers.
A lot of delivery places don't pay the service fee to the driver unfortunately... that service fee goes towards insuring the driver who is delivering their behalf so the tip is not the service fee. This varies per business and how that service fee is applied of course, it could go to the driver but you'd have to read the fine print.
But yeah it's wrong to assume someone is tipping you and pocket your change...
That's very very close to theft
Honestly, it's the employers fault 😅
@@ZedzDed311
If that's the case, then the drivers should seek employment where the employers actually pay employees for their time and efforts - and NOT expect the customer to!
Let these "businesses/apps" fall flat on their faces. It's a lose/lose business model for the customer AND the "employee". Again, I will not participate.
I've had a couple bartenders keep my $1+ change without asking. I would have tipped way more for a good drink but decided that they were happy keeping 9% when I usually tip upwards of 40% for a very good drink. For a great drink, I'll tip up to $4 on a $9 drink, so I'm happy to tip only $1.25.
There’s a restaurant in my town that automatically rounds your bill up to the nearest dollar unless you pay with a credit card. They also are outrageously expensive so happy to find somewhere else to eat, or just cook at home. My other favorite is pharmacies and grocery stores asking to donate to charity…
I don’t understand how you can go in to order food to takeout and they ask for a tip like whattt????
I was at a Starbucks getting a $100 gift card....and was presented with an 18, 25, 30% tip options. Setting aside that the correct tip should be $0 for that, presumably whoever used the card would be wanted to tip. So they would want to be tipped twice for just getting a coffee? Hard pass.
I never liked Starbucks. I mean overpriced burnt coffee, then you tip on a gift card, then use that gift card to tip again on the purchase. Talk about fleecing the consumer. Thank goodness I brew mine at home.
Wow. That's why I never go to Starbucks
I don’t tip at Starbucks. They are pouring fluids in a cup and handing it to me. I was a waitress for years and I always tip when going out to eat. I’m just not going to tip for coffee that’s already ridiculously expensive for what it is. And I don’t like the new pay set up. They can see if you are tipping or not before you pay. I also don’t like being expected to tip before I’m provided a service. If it’s awful I can’t take it back.
mind blown@@cgschow1971
I always use my app to order at SB! No tipping involved. The app does ask you later on if you’d like to leave a tip. I order tea so no tip for dropping a teabag in a cup and adding boiling water and leaving it on the mobile pick-up counter. Tipping is just a ridiculous situation now. North America, esp the US, needs to be more like Australia. In Canada, we have minimum wages (way in excess of the US) and strict labour laws covering vacation pay, Stat Holiday pay, OT, etc. Having a daughter working in the US, I am constantly astounded at how backward some parts of the US are when it comes to workers’ rights, benefits, living wages, etc.
Weirdest place? I got one for you… try the little shop at the airport… where I grabbed my water from the cooler… and handed it to the woman, where she moved it 1 inch to scan it… and stared at me, with the screen, asking for 25%
@@c0ckhead684 Obviously... i'm clearly not a btch, i just smiled and very slowly... and gently... pressed that 0% to savor the moment and crush her hopes & dreams. If there was a negative button, i'd have hit it... -200%... pay ME for having to deal with the "emotional trauma" of her trying to extort me.
Lmao that's great
Not only in the US, as your neighbors, in Canada tipping is getting insane! EVERY SINGLE fast food restaurant such as Subway, Little Ceasors, Starbucks, ETC,ETC 😱🤦🏻♀️ simply insane !!!
I've not had a waitress worth tipping in years. My mother was a waitress, so I don't make that statement lightly. It's now expected that even bad service will earn a tip, "because maybe they're having a bad day." Not my problem. If the service was adequate (didn't have to flag them down for drink refill), they get a couple dollars. I'll gladly refill my own drinks & pick up my food at the window if they dont like it.
Just visited Miami Beach and a restaurant my wife and I visited had a mandatory 14% tip charge with several options to add more to it. After looking more closely at the bill I noticed another 6% added marked as a "service charge". The servers bring their hand held device to the table to collect your payment making you feel intimidated while they stand their expecting you to add more to their tip. The audacity!
I used to go to a restaurant once a week and now that is down to once a month. The only language these businesses speak is money.
Miami Beach is the most expensive place I’ve ever been.
Tell them to fix the bill.
The way tipping culture has devolved, restaurants should just be honest and call it a service charge.
Miami Beach is a tourist trap. My recommendation is to venture outside of the downtown/Brikell/Miami Beach area. I had that happen to me. Waiters that hover over you as you fill out the receipt & even gotten attitude for anything that approaches 10%.
I was at a coffee shop where you poured your own coffee. They just hand you a mug, and if you wanted a muffin or such, all they did was hand it to you. Customers dutifully returned their own dirty cups and plates. And, they expected a tip ! Riiiiiiiight!
Panera Bread is like that too. You pick up your own meal, take it to your table, return your dirty plates, and fill your own cup, and you are asked to tip.
I understand it, to some extent, because prices are skyrocketing, and wages at such places are low, and lawmakers make work for low wages harder and harder, but it's frustrating. I don't go to Panera anymore, because they have gone hard left.
Nevertheless, I still tip at many places. I like tipping, and wish that I could afford to tip more often and more generously. I'd love to be able to tip like Rush Limbaugh, or President Trump!
Subway is like that where I'm from. They'll make your sandwich, but if you want a coffee they'll hand you an empty cup. If you want chips or a coke, go get it from the rack/cooler yourself.
I'm sure there's a lot to do keeping the place clean and the ingredients stocked, but they are getting an hourly wage already. It isn't my job as a customer to ensure they're getting fair compensation. Tipping is reserved for those who go above and beyond the expected level of service. It's a reward, not a requirement.
@@Shade84 Subway, really, is for employees who do not have a family to support. It's an entry-level workplace job, one which you want to work your way up from, and eventually out of (to something better). It's just like McDonalds, and other entry-level jobs.
@@annep.1905 And that's relevant to the discussion how?
always laugh when self-serve yogurt shops ask for a tip.
I saw a CZcams video a year or two ago from a guy at an unpeopled kiosk at an airport that asked for a tip when he went to pay for his purchase. No people even there and they are asking for a tip! Unreal.
Once, when I was on a customer service call, they asked if I wanted to leave a tip? 🤔😲 I was appalled!
This is another reason to not eat out anymore: 1) dogs dining INSIDE restaurants - not service dogs- just self absorbed people who want to do what they want to do; 2) tipping to pay salaries; 3) too many people handling the food in the kitchens to know who is well or not; 4) and price gauging.
The time spent eating out can be better spent at the grocery store and cooking at home. You know what you're eating, who prepared it, and what you spent
I have a list of our 'cravings' places, 3 are places you would expect to TIP,
7 are not!!!
You're upset because someone has a dog? hahahahaha
Ugh I was a server in a sit down restaurant and there’s another service being exploited: service animals or excuse me “emotional support” animals…another loophole for entitled, ignorant brats, adults who can’t leave their pets at home or in the car. Making it harder for those who really need them. I can always tell when it’s not a true working dog: they let it up in the chairs, they feed it from the table, uncontrollable. And can’t say anything to them, can’t ask them to show their permits or else they scream discrimination! Ugh and now these same minded people are trying to ruin tipping, a once grateful gift never expected from this old school server girl!
I am OK with the dog but not everything else.
I worked in restaurants for years. Most of them that I worked in, the chefs/cooks were underpaid while the waitstaff made a killing in tips. This seems completely backwards to me as I have done both. And working as a line cook is far harder than taking orders and running food out to tables.
Yep worlds backwards
yup been there. Some of the waitresses at one of the places I worked at owned multiple homes and rented them that they bought due to the insane tips they got while the cooks were looking for change in the couch to make rent.
People go where the money is.
most of the cooks are also not legal immigrants, and many are hardcore drug addicts excons. Waiters are supposed to tip out the cooks but they rarely do. while being a line cook is harder, these people could never be waitstaff.
I'm European, I view tipping as something that's outrageously stupid. Why you may ask? Because it's not the customers job to maintain your employee's health and happiness. Besides, we've already paid for your services once so why should anyone have to tip to please you weirdos? Stop trying to blackmail people into paying the extra you should be giving as an employer.
I went to get my hair done, touchup color, highlights and a trim $376 including a 20% tip and then they charge me 3.6% to use my debit card. I don’t know why that did not sit well with me, but it didn’t. This is only been my third time that I went to this particular salon and I called her yesterday and said I won’t be back.
