I think it was Jim Butcher who said it that "everyone likes a good apocalyptic finale", but it's predicated on the idea that it's the finale of a series. When every single conflict either leads to, or to prevent, the end of the world as we know it, you have nowhere else to go for the next movie, and people just stop caring.

It’s a fine line to walk, but you did it; completing your job with such an efficient level of laziness that we’re surprised you’re able to dress yourself in the morning. While such a minimalist work ethic is rare, it doesn’t mean that we want you back, in fact, it means you should look for employment elsewhere. But before you go, take this certificate of mediocrity. You should be proud, you stood on two feet, and convinced someone you could do something, when in fact you couldn’t. Now, get out.”

    3:22:00 Just to be the devil's advocate, they might've been trying to invoke the "triple goddess" archetype with them. There were a lot of ancient Greek examples of the archetype, and it's very popular in both modern fantasy and neopaganistic traditions. It's complicated, but just to summarize, the three goddesses are the Maiden (representing youth, allure, potential, and the waxing moon), the Mother (representing maturity, nurturing, motherhood, and the full moon) and the Crone (representing old age, wisdom, and the waning moon). The archetype can be either aspects of a single goddess (e.g. Hera, or Hecate) or three distinct goddesses, usually sisters (e.g. the Moirai), and it's common among many indo-european cultures, to the point some theorized it's based on an even older tradition of the "Mother Goddess" or "Mother Earth", potentially from before written human history.
    Now, the movie did absolutely nothing with the concept beyond vaguely referencing it in the characters' ages, but I would say there's definitely a reference, if nothing else.

    I appreciate that James Gunn wants to make a coherent vision, but I just think it's too late. I think the general masses are slowly becoming done with superhero movies. Obviously, we'll see when they release the Superman movie, but they just waited too fucking long. They should've immediately canceled all projects after Justice League bombed and gave it a good 5-10 before rebooting. But they did this bizarre limbo where everything is connected and nothing is. Is Birds of Prey in the same universe as BvS? Is Suicide Squad in the same universe as The Suicide Squad? Is WW84 canon with the first movie? Cause it really doesn't feel like it. 2 of the most popular icons in pop culture. Batman, Superman. This franchise could be worth billions. I'd say that DC has a better cast. But Jesus, they fumbled so embarrassingly hard. Is Aquaman 2 even being released? It is a massive cluster fuck.

    • @Phoenix0F8
      @Phoenix0F8 Před rokem +4

      Right, too many separate canons going at once and that makes it very hard to become invested in any one movie in particular. It's all the weaknesses of a cinematic universe- a whole bunch of movies and you might get lost if you miss any of them... but none of the strengths, because the canon is so weak that no movie is necessarily certain to matter to any of the others.
      It's stupid and short-sighted by people who should have known better, lol

      @Thanatos2996 Před rokem +2

      If they make a clean, complete break from the Snyderverse, if the movies going forward are coherent from one to the next, and if the quality is top notch, DC can make a comeback. That said, people are pretty tired of superhero movies, and all will take is one flop early after the reboot for people to tune back out. I’m not holding my breath, but DC could eat Marvel’s lunch if they play their cards just right.

    It's weird how many good superhero movies could come from the ideas in this movie but somehow this movie is really bad. We've got...
    1. Superhero wrestles with insecurity due to being a child while having to lead a team and maintain an adult persona
    2. Hero's city is trapped in a dome with no way in or out (show people starting to die due to lack of resources, hero realizing their powers can't fix the fact that people are going to die)
    3. Calypso's weird power that spreads through sound is turning people into slaves/zombies/whatever. Hero can't fight the people directly but has to stop her to save the world.
    4. Bad guy goes to school with the good guy, and the good guy is more of a hero to the world by being a regular human. He befriends the bad guy and changes the way the bad guy thinks instead of just beating his face in as a superhero.
    5. The daughters of the gods getting mad at Shazam for stealing their powers and wielding them so friviously. We could EASILY tie this in to the emotional turmoil/imposter syndrome that Shazam has, and maybe even have him giving up the powers temporarily. But after the daughters of Atlas absolutely fuck shit up (either by being evil or by accidentally misusing these abilities) having Billy take them back could both prove his worthiness AND change the daughters' minds - their heritage is being preserved by the humans, not destroyed.
    6. The humans have killed the gods, but one of the last gods left alive sides with the humans instead of the avenging gods.
    The whole fantasy Greek aesthetic here is totally wasted as well. Wish we could have gotten more interesting stuff done with the idea of "the ruined, dying world of the ancient gods after being wrecked by humans". I also really love unicorns being cast as powerful, magical, ferocious beasts - I just wish they weren't completely lame and underused and thrown on top of a tonally confused superhero movie that's already failing.

    • @stephw1702
      @stephw1702 Před rokem +3

      This was my thinking as well. Love your points and wish they would have taken the tiny kernals we got and explored them more rather than rushing.
      There was nice set up with that early conversation between Mary and Billy. I would have liked to see that explored more. Why was the Billy persona only in the film for maybe ten minutes? His struggle of being worthy to have the abilities, especially having mistakenly unleashed the destruction, could have worked well with his feelings about aging out of the system. It also could explain in part why the Shazam persona is rather immature - Billy sees it as a chance to shed his tough guy persona and be a kid, something he needs to confront.
      Would have liked to see more for Freddy as well. In the first film Freddy reveals how much he would have loved to have abilities and feels invisable. His shift into having so much confidence, believing it only is from knowing he is a superhero, and thinking he as a person is still a loser could have been nice to explore more.

Billy went all story time and told Aqualad about when he first joined the Justice League as "Captain Marvel". He talked about how he was so intimidated by Batman, and it Shazam to question his own place on the league, but because of the wisdom of Solomon he saw through it. If that isn't something you want to deal with, don't keep it as one of the powers. You can write a character that is both wise and stupid, but if that is too difficult, just erase every mention of wisdom of Solomon. Or say that they don't get all the powers right away. He's, apparently, pretty bummed that it got scored low by critics. I'd be more bummed that it's a financial bomb, regardless of what the audience score is, because that means that the audience mostly didn't bother watching it to score it. Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield come through the portal and point at each other, making the funny Spider-Man meme again. They all start jerking each other off as the camera zooms out, revealing the Death Star and the Star Wars theme briefly plays. I think a lot of Hollywood movies to me are crying out for the older days of story telling where they had a single core message to provide to the audience. This way you could get real in depth with that message or theme. Explore multiple different angles of your message from different characters view points. It can still be an action packed or drama filled story but rather than dividing your time and effort on several different themes and core messages focus all your attention on a single theme or point to explore. I'm not saying films can't explore multiple themes or messages but a lot of films feel so thin as if the writer is bouncing from idea to idea from the biggest sugar high before coming down from it and just saying AH! I guess that will do. The fact that myths from over 2000 years ago have better story telling is a bad sign especially when Shazam is directly inspired from them.

    Devils advocate here....Billy being a bullied and relatively weak wouldn't have any bravado...he is also characterized as desiring to be rebellious and adventurous but not having the ability or confidence...so when he gets power it goes to his head making him insufferable because he doesn't know how to handle it so he defaults to how he thinks the "cool kids" would act...but not being part of the in crowd he only has passive knowledge of how they act.
    To be fair that could only be a defense of the first movie...by the second movie he should be far more acclimated to the idea of having power

    #1 Why the hell did they make Billy so old in the first movie? He should've been, like, 8-12. They started him out so that he'd barely be a kid by the time they made a second movie. MCU did a better job with Peter Parker starting young.
    #2 It's kind of like Billy is how a young person with his characterization and background might act, while Shazam is how someone twice his age that thinks the current younger generation is a bunch of fuck ups acts.
    The story is basically the Tom Hanks movie BIG. The difference is supposed to be a kid getting to be a grown up and have a grown up body and (in this case) superpowers. They started Billy out as a teenager. He doesn't need to wish he were grown up. He's already almost there! In BIG, the kid was 12. He hasn't grown into an adult body, yet, he's going through hormonal changes, he doesn't understand responsibility, etc.
    In Shazam 1, let alone 2, he's already so close to being an adult. He's not transforming into a grown up. He practically already is grown up. You've already lost his little kid charm. He's transforming into a musclebound body. It's no good. Shazam (Captain Marvel) doesn't work with a teenaged/adult Billy. The concept is designed for him to still be a little kid. This is something that everyone. including Zachary Levi, subconsciously understands and plays to, but it's not the situation they're dealing with, because they started out with Billy already being too old. I think he's supposed to be 14 or 15 in the first movie. That's not terrible, but it's still too old, especially if you ever want a sequel. For Billy's first cinematic appearance, you want a kid that's 12, max, unless you're just going to recast every time.
