Reverse Backup camera wiring

- Did you recently buy a reverse camera and not sure what red power wire to use? Did you get an RCA cable with a little red wire on both ends? Not quite sure what to make of the terrible instructions? (read more below)
The red and black wire that are together are supposed to be connected to the white rear reverse light bulb (I accidentally said "camera" in the video). If you connect the red and black wire to the reverse bulb, it will give the camera power (turn it on) only when you are in reverse. (Ahhh Haaa moment). If they were connected anywhere else, they would either be on all of the time, or not when you need them to be. You could connect them to say a cigarette lighter that is only on when the car is on, but then you run into the next issue.
About the red wire on the RCA cable...Most headunits don't have a button to click when you're in reverse. If yours has video inputs, then stop. You could use an input as the reverse camera, but keep in mind that you have select this input..kind of annoying. For everyone else, yours has a special 12v turn on wire. When this one particular wire gets 12 volts, it tells the headunit to now switch to the yellow rca video. It is the small wire connected to that yellow rca that is to be used for that 12 v turn on. You can use the reverse lights for this power signal.
Thanks man! 1 hour and countless vidoes and none of them explaining exactly about wiring and make people more confused
On typical head unit like the Pioneer or kenwood with rear view camera input, one end of the long yellow RCA goes into the rear cam input, the short red wire coming out of it is to be connected to the reverse signal (usually purple color) from the head unit, at the end of this long RCA cable it's going to your rear view cam, the short red wire is to be tapped onto your reverse white light positive. At the camera end, other than the RCA there should be a longer red and black wires to power the camera, red will also get tapped onto reverse white light positive, black goes to ground. Wiring this way ensure your camera will only power on and trigger the head unit to display the rear view camera when you're in reverse gear, once you shift out of reverse the camera will be off.
But if your Pioneer deck has CAMERA VIEW ANYTIME you need to make sure the camera has power ALL THE TIME.
Wouldn't this cause the reverse lights to come on when you hit "view camera" ?
No!
No, they are not hooked up. He has it set up where it will come on when he turns it on. If he connected the black and red cable to the reverse then cam would come on when in reverse
ben805 Dude....literally the best comment. U explained it perfectly. I actually learned how to do it from your comment so thanks, time saved and frustration adverted.
Thank you! I've been studying the instructions for days wondering what the hell the little red wires are for or if I even need to use them. The manufacturer totally dropped the ball in the directions on them.
C'mon guys! This dude only shows how the camera works. Well he did say that we should connect the power cables on the reverse light wires at the back of the car.... Focus guys.
He just connected the cam directly to the battery at tried it to his video cam to see if it will work... WOW, whats happening to our world. Active listening ang paying attention is the key here.
He is just telling us how it works, the rest is up to us. You know now how it works, then do your part. Starting to say thank you!
Thnanks Mate, I also normally test may lights and modifications before installing them in my car. Cheers Buddy.
Shut up dumbass....video was almost useless
You are correct 💯
Thank you very much. I was about to ignore one of the cables but I had my doubts. You clear my mind.
Easiest technique on here, thanks alot. Tapping into the fuse box and all is way too much. Got it hooked up in less than 15 mins 👍👍👍👍
THANK YOU this video made my life so much easier...i could NOT figure out what all those wires were.
Your video was very helpful. I watched it then installed mine right after with no problems. Thanks so much!!!
Holy cow dude you just saved me 1 hour to return this radio! Thnx
Good Video, I do a fair amount of vehicle and mobile electronics but I still enjoying watching others video's. One of your poster's is right in that some guys who have video's on this subject are too technical and I imagine a lot of not-so-tecnical-DIY's have a tough time understanding them. However your video is good, you explain it very well without leaving off critical info and without bogging them down with worthless info.
Thanks man, thats really nice of you. I think I misspoke a few times and left out other info, but what started as just a random video turned into my most popular one
Was looking at the little RED wire hanging out of the RCA connector and thought WTF. Your video is appropo, thanks
Hi, I found this video very helpful, thank u so much...
Great video! Lots of help! And cool dog 🐕
Almost never comment on anything, but this explains things so clearly I wanted to say thanks.
Very nice of you, but I did such a crap job back then.
Thank you for explaining!! That helped me very much! :)
Yo bro thank you so much for this awesome video. It helped me do a project I wanted to make in my ride. Actually I wanted to install a button that says "Hey, am in reverse" except that I a am not using the camera for reverse. In fact, I am installing a night vision camera upfront. Putting the on switch along side the the top vent switches. Airplane cockpit like. I have lens fog lights which I will replace with an IR illuminators I got from Amazon. It gives a nice glow at night. I was trying to figure out how to connect it to my in-dash Monitor. I would have to bypass your batter connection since I have installed a Battery Gauge already right next to my shifter. Ill supply the juice from there and there will be my connection to the switch.
Again, thank you so much.. That was helpful man
Thanks for making it simple.
thanks for this vid, super helpful
That wire gets hooked to the reverse light on one end and the radio on the other end. It tells the stereo when the car is in reverse so it switches to the camera automatically.
Well if your stereo has say a canbus its tell stereo its in reverse so no need
great ingenuity. I was just thinking I should test the camera first and now I have a way
Jayson Colbert that's basically how the video was formed
Thank you. You made it clear. I was wondering if I needed to install that red one with the rca wire.
great video. thanks sir!
Thanks the red wires on the rca is what was throwing me off
Thank you this helps alot!!
You do need the end red wires on certain head units. The Xtrons in particular has a "Reverse" wire, which allows the display to switch automatically to the camera view. This is just a positive feed from the reverse light.
Well no if it has canbus that do it for you.
Nice one, appreciate a lot mate
Thank you brother. Awesome vid. This was the only thing confusing me
Richard Belvie that's really nice of you to say that. I totally didn't plan on anybody watching it. I would have done a better job lol but thanks again
Thanks so much for explaining buddy
Help us a lot 👍
You have a "cam in" RCA and "cam power" 16awg pinkish wire on your head unit harness. Connect the long cord that came with the cameras yellow RCA male to the "cam in" RCA. Then crimp connect or solder the red wire from long cord to the "cam power" wire. Now you will go to the back of the car to connect the short camera cord to the long cord. The short cord is the same as the long but has a little black wire added. Connect the yellow RCA with the short cords yellow RCA and the little red wire to the identical little red wire on the short cord. You will have a black cord left unconnected from the short cord. Just connect that to any ground wire or harness point. After you plug in the camera to the short cord you are all wired up... :)
But what tells the camera it’s in reverse? Doesn’t the reverse light power trigger it to the camera?
thanks dude this was helpful!
I hooked my power cable up to my amp remote line.. works perfect!
That's a pretty good idea to power the camera, but What about the 12v trigger to activate the screen?
I added the trigger to the back of the radio.. the red wire went to the trigger.
hey thx man for the video I was confused
Dude that camera you used to make this video is incredible quality
thanks man!
This was so handy thank you!
Thhink for your help
Thank you. I have watched a lot of videos. Still not understanding. I think those guys in the other videos are "over explaining it" making everybody more confused. Maybe they just have big egos, thinking I can do something that you can't. But with your video I just need to find a way to hide wires after the simple installation. I have a older car and I got a real good deal on a monitor and camera so I will just install it.
Check the description area. Hope that helps.
Thanks this helped a lot...
Thank you!
thank you so much buddy
TravelingDirector: THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this video. I bought a camera w/ identical wiring and with the worst instructions which didn't bother to explain what to do with those little red positive wires that are connected to the yellow RCA plugs. Thanks for laying out the wires vs. just talking about it. Now I'm in business. Much appreciated and thanks for filming in high def too!
Thanks Bob for the nice words. If I had known it would be such a popular video, I would have done a better job!
Ty for the video. Saved me some headache
thank you buddy
I have a break interlock feature on my car and I'm wondering if wiring his way is tripping it.. or maybe because I sprayed whit lithium grease in my column shifter.. now I have to do the break interlock bypass Everytime I shift out of park.
Thanks!!
Thank you
Hi, wchich video camera are you using in this video? Good quality. Can you share camera brand and model info? thanks.
cute camera man
Thanks.
cool dude 😎
thank you so much dude I was just staring at thinking what the hell
Thanks heaps Ross NZ
Hey pal nice ride, I'm wiring the same camera into my FG2 civic as well. However, my question is when I connect one of the wires paired with the RCA cable to the back of the headunit and the other end to the reverse light circuit, wouldn't that make the reverse lights come on if I were to simply view the camera (its an option on my pioneer headunit to view camera while moving forward/in park) when NOT in reverse?
Or is the reverse light circuit a single pole single throw switch where the lights can't come on from this schematic?
OH MAN i AM LATE! ---- Maybe you figured it out? You needed a switch and two one way diodes.
🙏 thanks again
i have the same setup but i have 4 colors coming out . red black yellow and white . not sure what to connect to my head unit , all i have is a regular yellow RCA that says revers cam , its a self sensing unit , so i probably need just 2 wires to the RCA but i am not sure what 2 , please help
Hey great video. I do have a question about mine. My unit can sense when it's in reverse and cuts to a no video signal when I shift into reverse. I have not installed my camera yet because I want to know if I need to wire the other red and black cables into my head unit or if I just should ignore them and wire the camera power to my reverse light and run the rca cable by itself to the head units rear camera input?
+ViperKnight94 Wire black and red wire coming from camera to ground and ign +. Wire camera trigger wire from head unit to a rocker switch and rocker switch to battery +. Run video RCA from camera to camera RCA on head unit. You can now turn on the camera any time with the switch.
+ViperKnight94 If you want the camera to just come on when you are in reverse. follow these steps. Wire red and black from camera to reverse light is your car. Run Camera trigger wire from head unit to reverse light + (same as the + from Camera). Rum video RCA from camera to head unit camera RCA. Camera will now only come on when in reverse.
Hope this helps.
+retiredsearge Thanks for this simple explanation! I have watched 1/2 a dozen videos trying to figure out what to do with the other end (reverse light) of the red wire. I hooked it up to the backup light power and it works!
how you gonna make that work with the head unit? I assume you not gonna put your camcorder up on the dash...
watch my other videos :)
Well, I connected my camera the proper way, and no picture , just a message says: no signal
What type of head unit do you have? Did you check to make sure your camera works before installing it?
Finally an explanation! Thank you! However, your camera is always on and not activated on reverse gear only.
In this example, yes. It would always be on.
The way it is shown in this video, it looks like if you install an on and off switch in between those red wires, you turn on and off the backup camera / video screen or an aftermarket radio (that purple wire which tells the radio, a camera is being turned on, switch to video) whenever you want. Nice simple video of how a backup camera works!
I just bought one similar to this for ebay and the picture on ebay didn't show the two red wires .But mine came with them so if I wire just the power to camera in with reverse light and blank those two wires off it should work ok.? Thanks for The video nice and simple for amateurs like me
+Nicholas Dunn I have the same question.
+Nicholas Dunn

All I have Is An AV in on my sat Nav to plug this into I hope the red wires on the 2
phono plugs are unnecessary,I have powered the camera from The reverse light and am just waiting for an adaptor lead for the phono plug to the AV In on the sat nav before i can test it out ..
You know how to install aftermarket reverse camera in MAZDA 3i 2015 SPORT? I need some help if is not too much to ask you
The black and red wire connect to the back of your radio red and black. Then you run a separate wire from your back up lights to the reverse wire on the back of the radio. If you do it this videos way that backup wire is designed to run a light not a camera. The separate wire running to the backup wire on the radio acts as a signal only telling the radio you are in reverse.
Wrong, long red and black connect to the tail light or constant power and ground. No need to run a second wire on this set up. The small red wires are the trigger that connects to the headunit
Black and Red is powering the camera. Red pigtail on RCA (Yellow) is trigger for AV unit (radio with display). It says to AV unit to switch ON display with camera picture. If You connect this pigtail (Red) to the Red of camera power, the display of AV unit (with reversing picture) will be ON only when reversing- if You power Your camera from reverse light (recomanded). The red pigtail near to camera connects to Red on camera. Second pigtail connects to Purple wire on AV unit.
I bought a camera off ebay just like this . The instructions regarding the little red wire were non-existent. Thanks for the clarification.
The small Red wires from the RCA cable are the only wires that are left out in my camera installation. Without these, my head unit is not displaying the video from the reverse camera.
Now we also tested using small bulb, this red wire was getting power when we put the car in reverse gear. So I am not sure where should I connect this in the head unit. Is this wire is supposed to get power when engaging reverse gear or have we done the wiring wrong?
What did you end up having to do with those 2 red wires on the rca cable?
God bless you Sir
I'm here for the 2 red wires on each side of long RCA cable - "what the heck is this for" read my mind - surely a trigger of some kind but will watch - THANKS!
Thanks for watching. Those red wires sticking out the ends are the remote turn on signal to your headunit. 12v will trigger your headunit to flip to the camera video signal
Hi Bro,iam the 500 th like l like this video , thanks for giving clarity who to wiring.
Oh, cute dog
So I tied in to the reverse lights with power to the camera, now do I still need to also tie in to the reverse lights with the small red cable? And with bothe ends or just one?
When you connected the camera to the reverse lights, you gave it power when you shift into reverse. Now you have to trigger your head unit or stereo to switch into video mode. You can use the red wire, both ends. Perhaps the other bulb if you can. You don't need the red wire if your car already has a wire for it (many modern cars do)
So the short red wired on the yellow plugs arent needed? Will the cam shut off after not in reverse if I only hooking black and red dual wire to reverse lights
The short red wire is not needed for the camera to function, however, it is the wire people use to send the signal from the car to the headunit to activate
Should you not have an inline fuse when connecting directly to the battery?
Bill Wright this was just a demonstration of what it takes to power on the camera. I wasn't too concerned with an influx of power especially since the car was off and these cameras are very low power.
I have connected the ground wire to the negative wire of my reverse light. Is it bad? Should i remove it and connect it to the ground ?
HADY Nsf it will end up grounded either way
*I am still rather confused... In your example, your camcorder has it's own battery to power it up. But if I have a separate small 4.3" LCD screen, or one of those backup LCD mirrors, then how do I get them to power on? Do I tap one of the red RCA wires to the fusebox, like the radio for example. What about the red RCA wire from the other end (closer to the tail light side)?*
AzNightmare do you want your screen to only turn on when you're in reverse?
TravelingDirector *Yes, I do. Or have the display on only when the camera is on. Kind of the same difference I suppose, as I've seen some set up with the camera always on, but only display is seen when the camera is actually on to display something.*
Does the camera have a 12v turn on lead or just a power and ground connection?
I bought the same camer, can't get the lights on the actual camera to light up. Didn't look like yours did either. Ever get them to work?
Brett Kime those arent lights. they are sensors
犬が可愛い!
well you left out a Red wire and I'm confused you just left it off YE so this was NO help
got this same one but what the hell us the short red wire for
The little red wire is the Reverse Signal wire, if you have a head unit with a screen, you wire the little red cord from the reverse light to the back of the head unit, it then lets the head unit automatically switch the screen on when the car is in reverse.
Pretty sure that's wrong. The red from the camera goes to the live on the lights and thats where it gets its power from. The av cable (yellow) goes to the head unit
Backup camera install
The short red wire on my AV (Yellow composite) cable did wire up to my head unit. It's what triggered the screen to automatically switch the screen input to the Camera when I started reversing.
Erik Chorn how did you wire it to the front where do these damn short red wires go any diagrams
ok so if you have red wire on both sides of rca. do you only connect the one side to the head unit? because on the camera end theres nowhere to connect.
im guessing i have to tap the 'rca red wire' into the 'camera power wires' coming from the 'reverse light'. as the 'rca red wire' is not long enough to reach the actual 'reverse light'
sorry this terminology can get confusing. lol
+MoB even though the red wires only stick out at each end of the yellow RCA , (if I remember correctly) the wire is still running along the full length inside the rubber.
In other words, if you connect 12+ v on one side of the red wire, it will come out the other side. Using just one side of the red won't do anything. good luck.
+TravelingDirector hi thanks . Turns out my headunit auto switches to a rear cam ouput. So i just connect rca without trigger wire.
+MoB lucky guy!
+TravelingDirector yeah it has some sort of canbus box which auto detects reverse. Pretty neat.
Camera is on 24/7?😮
Never add any wire directly to battery power without an inline fuse or relay. Good way to burn down your vehicle. Other than that good video. Except maybe that your camera will be powered up 24/7. You need the reverse activation wire as main power for this kit to work as intended.
Hi
I have a question, I don’t have a head unit but I bought a reverse camera with LCD monitor. and it came with this little red wires. I have connect these little red wires to the Red Power Cable. Would I have any issue if these Little Red wires are connected even without a head unit available ???
Thx
Leo Leo Tell me about the monitor that came with it. Does it only have a power wire, a ground wire and a video input?
TravelingDirector hi it has exact same wires that you have in your video
Thx

Leo Leo the 5th photo has the wiring diagram. Good luck
TravelingDirector hi I have already connected the camera and it’s working. I am just wondering will I have any problem if I connected the little RED wires even though I don’t have a head unit ??? Thx
What kind of cam did you use to shoot this?
gopro, medium settings
I am looking to wire my reverse camera to my cars reverse lights. The first time I tried it, i think i grounded the wire wrong which the caused my alternator to become defective and cause the check air bag and abs warning light to come on. It also made the Blowers turn off. Do you think this was caused by me because only a week before my car was being worked on at a body shop in which they had left the ignition on for hours without having the actual engine running. I am looking to give it another attempt but am scared because i don't want to dish out alot of money having the alternator replaced again.
Whoa man! there are not too many ways to mess this up so I highly doubt that you did anything wrong to cause that many issues.
The reverse lights have two wires and the camera power wire has two wires so the worst that could have happened is that the polarity was off which would probably only result in the fuse going off or the camera just not working.
TravelingDirector do you reckon my alternator failed because the guys at the body shop left the ignition on for too long?
much more likely than anything you did with the lights
HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEEHHEHEHHEHEHEHHEHEHEHEHHEHEHEHHEHEHEHHEHEHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I AM ASSUMING THAT WAS A SMART ASS COMMENT RIGHT?
Um, what? Keep going!
If I had known this video would take off I would have been more thorough. Sorry!
Small Red wire from screen side to which
wire we connect i’ve three wire ( 1- reverse-in 2-ACC-in 3- CCD 12V )
You'll want to use the 1 - reverse in. If you put 12v into that wire, your headunit will flip the video on. Most people connect the reverse bulb to the small red wire coming off the video cable. The other side will connect to the # 1 reverse in
but isn't that constant, not triggered by the stereo when you go into forward mode?
Russell Ngataki when you put the car in reverse, The White rear reverse lights go on thus turning on the camera. when you are going forward, the lights are not on the this the camera is not on.
The guy is talking about in the vid you connected the camera direct to the car battery, so in that case the camera would be constantly on
Can u help I am hooking up cam and it is not getting power to the camera screen ?
Daryl Westfall can you be a little bit more detailed?
👏👏👏👏👏👍🏻
So what are the loose red wires for???
Stephen Rea 12 volt turn on for the headunit
I got a quick vid on it, on my channel, I show for sure
It is getting power to the reverse light but not getting power to the backup camera screen
More backup camera installation bit.ly/2JbwHcj (You can do the installation by yourself once reading the installation guides or look video tutorials regarding a way to have them put in. once reading the tutorials, you’ll be able to perceive the assorted elements it needed and skills these elements work.)
Good for making sure the camera works. Doesn’t really show how to hook it up to the radio and reverse lights
Is it difficult driving with the hood up?
Yes. I keep hitting things and can't figure out why
@@TravelingDirector I will need to talk to my insurance. Maybe lowered chance of reversing into stuff evens out the increased risk of regular driving.
so how to you get the unit to know you want it on screen now
most units now have a 12v in. Check your head unit wiring guide for "back up" or "reverse camera". When the unit gets the 12v, it will then display the video signal.
How do I hook this same camera to my TV inside my house
Just plug in the yellow video RCA wire into your TV. To power your camera, you'll need 12 v so you won't be able to plug it into your wall but you can get a converter or something
Why not just done a video of how you installed it in your car other than this silly master piece
I have hook up to a battery getting power but screen will not turn when just the power cord is hook up to the screen. What am I doing wrong
Daryl Westfall if your headunit does not have a button for the rear camera then you have to find which wire is used to activate the screen. You know that extra wire on the RCA? It's used to give a signal to your headunit to tell it to switch to rear view
Is the signal to head unit to tell it to switch to read view would be the positive terminal itself from reverse lamp?
Sujith Sidhardhan you could do a variety of things. The headunit needs the voltage input to signal to the head unit to switch to the camera video input. You could do one reverse light to power the camera and the reverse light to turn on the camera. I'm sure it's fine but I wonder how much power can be drawn from the one light
Thank you for the advice. My head unit has a camera input and reverse trigger pin. Model is the same as the second one (PA30B). www.htmanual.net/audio_unit_components_and_components_location-1095.html. I was bit worried about feeding +ve supply from reverse lamp to the reverse trigger in Head unit. So its safe. Right?
Sujith Sidhardhan some people have a reverse button or video input button on the head unit, but yours and mine need the input. There was a factory wire in the harness that was for the reverse light so I didn't need to use the reverse bulb power.
The red wire is not for all cars. Some cars have a reverse sensor built it and a separate wire for it. Look up a wiring diagram.
Nice one. I did this but I'm getting black and white picture Any ideas??
KadirLLB What do you mean? like there is video, but no color? That's very odd. Obviously both the screen and camera are color, right? I can't imagine you bought a black and white camera. Try to plug the RCA into a TV and see what happens.
Pull Up! Yeah when plugged into TV it has colour. Very strange. Trying to think of it's wiring issues? Maybe bad ground or something: thanks for the quick response dude
Kadir Simsek if the TV is showing color then by process of elimination it has to be your head unit. You can double-check it by plugging something else into the head unit. Maybe an old DVD player? An old Xbox? Something else that has a single RCA video signal. If the picture has color then it is your camera, if it's still black and white then you know the problem is with your screen. Very odd, good luck!
TravelingDirector legendary advice! I shall get back to you mate. Thanks
I was playing with my camera yesterday and it went black and white on my screen too. I moved the wires around (RCA yellow) and the color cam back. It had something to do with the wire not sitting right. Try wiggling the yellow RCA.
can i use the red wire to power the camera instead?
the one on the RCA wire?
yup
theres a yellow n black wire for the video signal, can i use the red wire for powering the camera?
+Aquakey 98 I don't see why not, but I'm not 100% sure. try it first before installing
added alot of convenience
Where do I connect little red wires on RCA
armando contreras the little wire is for the 12v signal to the head unit...telling it to look for the video signal
TravelingDirector
no
Again, what do you do with the "rear" little red wire?(i call it a pigtail) I have figured out the front one has to connect to the reverse wire of the HU, but you will never say anything about where to connect the rear one? Please?
I have the red wire & blk ground wire to the backup light, so does the rear red short wire on the rca cable also connect to the other red wire thats connected to the backup light? With the other one connecting to the reverse wire up front at the HU?
For some stupid reason i was connecting the 2 short red pigtails on the rca together and sent them up front to the HU's reverse wire. Is there anyway that would still work?
