    3:40 the map doesn't actually show the whole generated landing area; it only shows a certain distance from the player, so it is always centered on them. So if you move far away from your ship, it'll eventually be out of the map area.
    Ironically, the previous map system did actually show the edges of the explorable area.

    The map is centered on you. The map doesn't show everything once you land. When you move towards the edges, the map moves to reveal more. So the map is actually bigger than what is currently being shown. But maybe it would be better if they have feathering in the edges and not super sharp and straight cut.

    frankly, the ship interior decoration stuff seems pointless to me without the ability of determining the layout of doors and ladders. It also begs the question: If you edit your ship in any way after placing decorations, will it still reset all of those decorations? That's always been the number 1 reason I never bothered to decorate, because it would all be undone if I make even a slight edit to the ship.

    I really like the lore and the idea of starfield, and realistically speaking this is their first crack at a space game. They nailed the atmosphere of having that old NASA look to everything, but it does feel like fallout with a Skin on it. @@Keego0201 i suppose it is meant to be a little harsh. graphical improvements aside, bethesda games have increasingly been feeling the age of their underlying tech, even to the extent that they made a point to show that npc's could actually use ladders in starfield, a noted shortcoming in previous titles. I'm not hating, i'm just saying they might need to reconsider using the same tech they've been using since morrowind when trying to make a compelling space game. It feels like fallout, because it's basically fallout, and skyrim, and ultimately morrowind at its core

      @@snowman6033 game styles are defined by a companies core values in the type of game they are trying to make. That's like asking Rockstar to make GTA6 locked in first person like cyberpunk 2077, if it works then it works. Starfield doesn't struggle from it's design being ultimately out dated, at the core it just isn't living up to the standard of their previous titles because everyone has expectations it'll be different. Can't always reinvent the wheel, it's hard making something unique. Sometimes you just gotta find ways to make the wheel rounder.

    • @snowman6033

      @@Keego0201 I think maybe we're misunderstanding each other. I'm a big fan of the bethesda style of games, not many others make games in this style other than obsidian and warhorse, and I always wish there was more. but mechanically bethesda games have remained largely unchanged since morrowind. when fallout 3 came out, it was called oblivion with guns, this isn't new criticism. I'm not even opposed to it, it's a style of game i enjoy. but starfield in my opinion fell short, and part of that is the tech they have to work with is poorly suited to a space exploration game. and in this case, i think tech informed design, which led us to spaceships that are fast travel machines, and procedurally generated planet surfaces with limited range to explore.

  • @fwg1994
    @fwg1994 Před měsícem +5

    This won't be enough to get me to come back to Starfield, there's a number of issues I had, and while it's a step in the right direction, it doesn't really address my main issues.
    The story was abysmal. It followed Bethesda's seemingly recent trend for starting the game of both on rails and jamming all the toys into your hands right away narrative be damned. Then most of the main story didn't amount to more than fetch quests and almost none of them went to areas that were worth exploring beyond the story mission. What little I did find interesting, the end of the game just tossed aside.
    The exploration suffered greatly from how the game evolved from their previous games. The strength of Bethesda rpgs was always the journey. You get an objective, but on the way there you run into interesting things that derail you and get you immersed in some side adventure, or you just run into unscripted encounters from the npcs just interacting with the world. Starfield may be a much bigger game, but it cuts as much of that journey out as possible. You pretty much have to use fast travel to get around, which means there's not much point to manually jump system to system, and when you land you're almost always right next to your objective. Exploring is something you have to go out of your way to do, and that makes it so much weaker. If you find nothing interesting on the way to your primary objective, that's fine, you just keep doing your primary objective, but if you go exploring with the express purpose of finding something interesting and don't, then you just wasted a bunch of time. So with the design changing such that exploration needs to be a more deliberate action instead of an incidental action, the burden on the things to discover is a lot higher, and it's just not up to par.
    Lastly, none of the companions were too interesting. Having all the companions with some amount of backstory and personality be part of Constellation was pretty disappointing. They all feel pretty similar. Would've really liked the major factions to have some companions you could get. Having a companion with a story I could get invested in would go a long way in holding my interest in the game.
    The game was at its best when it was the fun space adventure game. I didn't really find the loading screens an issue. Sure, it'd be better without them, but they also didn't really interfere with the game being a fun space adventure. A lack of companions I was invested in, interesting things to discover, and stories to play through did. They weren't completely absent, but they felt few and far between. I'm hopeful that the expansion can inject more of that into the game, but mainly I'm waiting on the creation kit for mods to take off.

    • @TheNightman.

      20 billion loading screens take you straight out of the adventure, it's a huge issue they will never resolve

    • @fwg1994
      @fwg1994 Před měsícem

      @@TheNightman. Maybe it's just that I grew up on loading screens being an extremely common thing, but no they really don't.
      And honestly, it'd be a ton of work, but it is a solvable issue. Fallout 4 elevators acted as a dynamic loading screen where it unloaded one cell and loaded another. They could just turn every load screen door into an airlock where there's two doors, one closes, unloads the cell and loads the next cell, then the other door opens. You never lose control of your character, and after the patches the load times were fast enough that it probably wouldn't be an unnatural delay for most players. For planetary landing they could do a canned animation of flying into the planet with a fade in to go from the planet LOD to surface terrain. More or less what Skyrim was doing as you approached distant terrain in a rapid, controlled fashion. Space jumps would be the easiest of the bunch to change because you got barely anything to load/unload. This is all stuff that's doable in the engine currently. It'd be a ton of work, and could take a lot of time to make it look good and run smoothly, but it's not beyond the engine capabilities.

    Regarding the map, I'm fairly sure the map doesn't show the whole playable landing zone space, but rather only a small portion of it.

    For example, you can keep heading north, and the map will eventually load out the area where you landed your ship

    i honestly hope we get some sort of starfeild equivalent to power armor. still make it limited use like fallout with some sort of rare(ish) power source but also have a similar level of customization to fallout in terms or frames, armor peices and mods. even better if they can add difficulty settings to where certain environmental conditions are not survivable outside the armor like a high radiation or gravity planet ect. making these items available to enemies as well could add to the difficulty curve with human enemies rather than them bullet sponges just because its a video game.

    Some of Starfields problems is that it was made as a modding platform in mind because that brings longevity which equals €€€, the lead writer Emil dont care about writing good stories or dialogue (He said so himself), they made the game in a way that the base story and faction stories was too dependent of the dlc parts for the world to make sense, that they cut out of the game, which results in shallowness and hollowness which also in turn makes you feel unimmersed in the world you are playing in. That is also one of the reasons everything feels disconnected, not just because of the size of the game.
    Too much copypaste is a big dealbreaker too. I know many people blame the outdated engine and you are partly correct, but their older games was worth the loading screens, this one is not, and either way if they did remove them, the game still wouldnt get more soul to it or immersion because of all the other before-mentioned flaws. This update is needed sure, but getting to POI's faster doesnt change the fact if you have been to 1 of them, you have been to the same 1 at 500 other planets, with exact same layout, enemies, corpse with the exact same name as the previous one with the exact same slate telling you what happened there, so yes there is plenty to do in the game, but do you WANT to do it?
    Their previous games had something that made them unique, in this one they went so hard for realism that it lacks any uniqueness whatsoever, its bland and sterile, it makes you feel like a 5 year old, having another 5 year old pretending to be your parent in kindergarten, and there is no way that a company like Sweetbaby inc isnt involved in this flop, i mean come on, a club in a drug and crime infused world where the most nsfw content you will see is a bunch of fat dudes stripping in teletubby costumes, and the most nsfw words you will hear in the game is "bullshit" and "bastard" from "hardcore" pirates and gangsters that kill people for a living😂 Yep this game has Sweetbaby inc written all over it, and if you dont know what that is, google it and see how they operate, basically a bunch of angry feminist chicks that dont get enough D, and gay pedo dudes cooperating together, blackmailing game companies to release trash like this.
    In the bright side though, their modding tool will be released one day, and the only reason its a good thing is because you can remove 90% of the game and put something actually interesting in its place if you want to, and the only reason a sane person would want to even bother doing that in THIS game is because there is $$$ to be made.
    I think the only ones this game is a good fit for is either VERY VERY ambitious modders, Or christian LGBTQ+ parents with failed psychology and gender studies degrees with very young and already wokeism-brainwashed children, this would be right up their alley

    It wasn't a terrible game at release for me, but I stopped playing less than halfway through the story because it just seemed like it tried to get in the way of having fun. The skill tree was super frustrating and I hated that I couldn't experiment with any proper resource or outpost building unless I invested in that tree, but the skill points came so slow. I think I'll still give it a pass unless there is a mod for more xp and respec anytime to open up experimentation.

    What killed the game for me was an insufferable cast of characters in the main questline, and the overabundance of loading screens. Instead of getting to fly our own ship into orbit, we get a loading screen. Instead of being present to witness warp travel, its a loading screen. You cant even go to the cargo hold to exit the ship without a loading screen. Everything might as well be on the same planet, since you dont even feel like you're actually traveling to another place. Actually initiating travel is confusing too, and I fumbled around trying to figure out how to actually jump to another place.

    All I want is hubs that have no doors, and adding doors manually wherever you want them. If we would have the option to be able to have a simplified interior view for hubs when we build the ships to know how doors would affect them, that would also be awesome. The shipbuilder has such potential, but it’s destroyed by automatically adding passageways. Simply terrible, stupid idea.

    All these things would have held my attention a little longer at launch. Nothing here changes the fundamental way the game is built and the feel of repetition, small boring cities/towns, and randomly generated area that all look and play the same. Not to mention ships that look cool and give you no reason to walk through or spend time in. Inventory? Did they fix inventory?
