      Jup, Geoff's band Beak> is basicly a love letter to CAN.

    • @vollsticks
      @vollsticks Před rokem +29

      He recounts the story in the All Gates Open book. Mark E. Smith (who is featured in an interview with Irmin in the book, too) was playing a Radio 1 session of his favourite music and dropped "Vitamin C". Barrow sez "it sounded almost like a mixture of Public Enemy and A Tribe Called Quest". But because of MES's mumbling he thought the tune was called "Can" by Vitamin C. Went to a record shop the next day with a typical wanker behind the counter who pretended to not know what Geof was talking about-but a fellow shopper took him to one side, pulled out Ege Bamyasi and goes: "This is what you're after". And yeah, as you said, he literally couldn't believe the record came out in, what, 1972?!? And he's right it coulda been made yesterday.
      I don't think Can are timeless--more like they're "out" of time. And to me every album almost sounds like it could be the work of a different band. They never "stood still". All those records made on two-track are classics and will be regarded as the classical music of the far future (if humanity lasts that long!), I'm convinced.

    • @IwasMMAbeforeyouwere
      @IwasMMAbeforeyouwere Před rokem +4

      Same thing happened to me. Suggested songs were streaming and there was this tune with a hypnotic slick beat. The GF and I were dancing to it. The beat was so hip I thought it sounded like a late 80’s/early 90’s alternative thing, and was shocked to find out it was from the early 70’s. It was Vitamin C as well. Can has been a favorite ever since, as evidenced in this video.
