    On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
    If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

    Excellent video... With regards to the use of Phoenix the Iranian's started using 2 Phoenix per aircraft due to weight, they lost a couple of Tomcats due to flat spins due to the weight of the aircraft. Also the fact that they found that during in dogfights they only fired up to a max of 2 missiles due to the time it took for locking up and the distances at which the engagements where started at along with the the limited rounds they had available.

    What's interesting to me about the Iranian F-14 was it was told to the public back in the 80's that since the fall of the government the Tomcats weren't used that much because of a lack of spare parts. But decades later when more was released about the Iran Contra affair, the parts needed got to Iran after all. Thus the Tomcat was used more than we were told 40 years ago.

    This video inspired me to read more about this war. The H3 air strike details are insane. The Iranians flew some over 1,000km, refueling 4 times over the duration at only 300ft above the ground. Absolutely insane.

  • @rustcohle349
    @rustcohle349 Před 2 lety +6

    One thing that upsets me is how the revolution didn't allow iran's air force to receive their F-16s. They would absolutely dominate iraqi air force alongside the tomcats. .

  • @Christoff1996
    @Christoff1996 Před 2 lety +37

    This was so cool! The MiM-23s were used as substitutes for the Aim-54s as they were not running out of them but because many of the phoenix missiles’ components had past their shelf lives like the thermal batteries as of course Iran was not receiving any parts or more importantly the upgrade kits to keep the missiles updated (they would later receive a number of these kits secretly during the Iran-contra affair).
    The Mirage F.1EQs arrived in November 1981 and initially did very well in ambushing the F-14As using a technique called “Giraffing” which was flying at very low level then making a straight up climb to level off behind the F-14s before engaging using the powerful Mantra 530F “Super” medium range missiles which were very good weapons.
    The Iranian Air Force countered this by placing their F-5E Freedom Fighters at low altitudes to cover the F-14s and catch any low flying F.1s. In all the Mirage F.1EQs shot down probably 6-8 Tomcats during the conflict but in turn maybe as many as 30 were lost to the F-14s. Truly a amazing clash between these aircraft.

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  Před 2 lety +25

      I believe the recorded numbers claim only 3-4 tomcats lost max to f1s the tactic the f14s used was also just baiting them, f14s would fly 20 miles off the border and wait for the mirages to come up behind them Iranian GCI would tap 3 times on comms letting the f14 know it was being trailed as there was radio silence in effect. The f14 would do a split S and shoot a juicy Phoenix at the f1 more often than not scoring a kill.

    Iran’s Air Force is so fascinating to me. They’ve never been incredibly strong, but their achievements with the F14A and the upgrades they’re doing to both it and the Phoenix missile is impressive. I’d love to see an Iranian pilot face off against a higher tier flanker in BVR.
    This reminds me, Is there a place to request for future video ideas? Id love to see a BVR fight between the Su-57 and the F35, it’s the most likely fight to occur between 5th Gen aircraft as the border nations of Russia own the latter.

      Let's be real, the only thing impressive about Iran is the current regime standing up to US/Israel. Buying elite machines from ''Western'' designers isn't impressive. Just as the Iraqis buying form the Soviets or the French isn't impressive. Iran was just another population controlled by the US with military tech rewards for a time, like so many others. Unless a population is capable of actually creating elite aircraft by itself, it is never going to be a first class air force.

    Wow...I always thought the Hawk missile systems was SA only. I went to Redstone Arsenal once I finished basic training. They've many missile battery maintenance schools there and remember now that I had friends and acquaintances that were instructed in Hawk missile systems repair. When I saw them, they were always mounted on towed chassis, but we had mobile chassis with Sidewinders, and I knew that planes could carry AIM-9s, so I should've realized that Hawk (or I-HAWK) could be used on airborne platforms too.
    Years later (1992-1993), I wondered why the US Army stopped using that system. I initially thought it was because Kuwait had them when they were invaded by Iraq, but I think it was because it was replaced by the Patriot system, and because the Hawk was a relatively old missile system (1950s technology) and was probably due to be replaced anyways.

    When doing such scenarios, do you always retry until you succeed (for a fun video) or are you just that good that it's one try only?

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  Před 2 lety +9

      I do mostly the first try unless something stupid happens like I hit the ground, or lag ruins something, or something very anticlimactic that would ruin the video. But generally speaking its a single run thru and whatever happens happens. That way I don't introduce any bias into it and it doesn't get repetitive with me winning all the time that kind of thing.

    I studied in a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) program and one of our professors told us about how there were many Iranian students here in the 70's when we were still friendly. And of course they had a lot of oil money, so the students who made it here were driving Firebird's and wearing gold medallions... lol Good times. A lot like the Chinese driving Ferrari's around our campus now.

    can you pls do a player vs player fight in the mig21bis vs mirage f1 in a guns only fight u can use missiles if u want , i really want to know which is the better fighter cus in theory the mig21 is a better fighter has all the advantages (aoa,twr,climb rate,accleration) , the only disadvantage is that its a delta wing , the f1 performs worse in everyway (in the stuff thats mentioned above) but the only advantage is that it may have a better airframe and we cant really know how big of a role it plays unless u test it.
