    Couldn't agree more. I watched an interview with Steve Jobs and John Lasseter (1996) recently; when they effectively said they put the story first, I just smiled and thought, yep, that's hardly a secret, but it seems like the biggest problem with shows like The Acolyte. Its always been about good versus evil, that's the dramatic heart of the movies, Oddly enough, that's at the heart of Andor too, which in my opinion is the best written Star Wars show. Still, I guess Disney have managed to unit the fans of Star Wars; like a thousand voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced by disbelief. These times will pass :-)

    Can you do a follow-up video on mistakes 3-100 with the writing on this show?
    I think there needs to be a purely objective commentary on the plot and dialogue choices from the perspective of someone who is trained in this stuff
    E.G. I’m not a film person so I don’t know the technical jargon, but the…plot contrivances? Plot coincidences that are clearly there just to setup the next scene just boggle my mind. It totally rips me out of the show
    E.G. Mae goes to kill cis white male. Can’t kill him through force field. Meets up with Darth Smilo Ren in disguise to get poison. Goes right back to Jedi temple. Gives poison. Jedi suddenly breaks meditation and kills himself. WTF? Why? Why didn’t he just let her kill him the first time if he wanted to die? Why is her first thought when facing an impenetrable force field, to get a poison that the JEDI HAS TO INGEST? That makes zero sense. If you gave this challenge to 100 6 year old boys, 100/100 would conclude that the solution is to use a bomb and blow the Jedi and the building around him into rubble
    Also, as a screenwriter can you explain to me why so many times the characters do literally the opposite of the thing they just said?
    How does this not get caught in editing by anyone? They literally just said the thing
    “The force is not a weapon to be used” immediately uses it as a weapon
    “Jedi only defend, they never attack” Mae inexplicably says “attack me…with all your strength” then she attacks the Jedi first. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE DUMB LINE?!! I FEEL LIKE IM TAKING CRAZY PILLS!!

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  Před 6 dny +1

      I feel your pain! And I am planning on doing a dialogue problem breakdown once the show is finished so I can go through the whole thing.
      I know what you mean about why do they do the opposite. I think Kathleen Kennedy just told us why. She made a statement that all the hate for the show is just from a small minority that doesn’t like strong female characters. That this is a show made by women for women and is a great representation of the LGBT community. And then proceeded to say there is no agenda.
      They care more about making sure as many diverse people get screen time as possible that they forgot to make an actual good plot line. Let’s make a really good story and script first with no regard to who will play what part, and then find good actors for the scenes.
      One of the basic principles I read in a good screenwriting book was that you don’t want to create a character with a certain actor in mind (granted that is based on not writing for a franchise like Harry Potter or Mission Impossible or Star Wars, but in this case of Star Wars it’s an entirely new story so that shouldn’t be a factor). Just write good characters and THEN see who would best fit the role.

    • @danieldiaz9948
      @danieldiaz9948 Před 5 dny

      @@CamberFilmSchool is there a role on the production team whose job is to review the overall actions and motivations and things characters have said and double check that they don’t violate something from earlier in the script? I know they film scenes in totally different order so that wouldn’t be the director, is that on the screenwriter? The editors?
      I just don’t understand how no one on the entire team ever raised their hand and was like, “didn’t we just have our mystery assassin kill a Jedi with a blade? Will it be confusing for the audience to have our mystery boss villain monologue about how the Jedi can’t be killed with weapons?”
      Or “didn’t we have several instances, like the first two murders, where we established that Jedi never attack first, they always defend? Then we further establish this is part of their training since younglings that they deflect and shield with lightsaber? So if we have a scene where villain floats into the frame, and the Jedi act confused and say “what is it?”, wouldn’t it be strange behavior for them to ignite their lightsabers and charge the villain attacking first? Wouldn’t it be way cooler and more in character if they say “what is it?” And he fucking hurls a lightsaber and spears one of the Jedi so fast that they can’t even react to it quickly enough?
      I can’t believe in a room full of highly paid professionals, no one had this feedback? Is it a failure of process, or do people have these ideas and they are too scared to bring it up?

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  Před dnem +1

      @danieldiaz9948 there’re definitely supposed to be people monitoring that stuff. This is a 180 million dollar budget show so there’s no excuse. I am working on a feature film and had someone on set a few months ago whose job was just to keep us straight on continuity because we did film so much out of order.
      There are so many script problems with this show that I’m surprised it even made it to the filming process. There’s not much you can do to fix a bad script once you’ve already started. That’s why I think even more that they don’t actually care about the story as long as Disney’s DEI virtue signaling is front and center.

    Bad because the author(s) chose to ignore the premise of why what came before made for a good Star Wars experience, supplanting the nuclear concept as well as the nature of the force. Insertion of what was perceived to be a good story turned it into a calamitous exercise.

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  Před 15 dny

      It’s not that there is a female lead or diverse cast. I’m all about having good actors play parts. If you’re not familiar, over the past few years in the USA, white people are being told they need to apologize for being white and oppressive (because of slavery hundreds of years ago that they never took part in). Men are told they are privileged and oppressive by simply being men (especially white men). And you can see this being played out in the show like I said in the video about the first white male Jedi you see is convinced he should kill himself. Then we have the lesbian witches who don’t NEED men. They can just create their own children. The trans use of pronouns that don’t make sense (which Disney has said this is just the start).
      Have all the diversity in the cast you want, but the problem is that they’re purposely trying to be as “politically correct” as possible and it makes the story bad. DEI (Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion) is literally racism. There’s already equity and inclusion in the USA (it’s in the law) if you work hard, but instead people are being chosen for things because of their gender or skin color rather than by merit or ability.

      @@CamberFilmSchool thanks a lot for your time to elaborate. I always wonder when shows/games/movies get review bombed and there is a huge gap between critics and a very vocal part of the audience. My question to you is, can you really support your theories within the stories framework or have you been so critical of “woke disney” already that you are actively looking for proof?
      In general, I don’t see men portrayed negatively in the show. Sol is portrayed very positively, a father figure like Qui-Gon Jinn. Also the theme of virgin birth has already been used in episode 1 and the whole Messiah story plays out similarly like in Dune. And the guy killing himself is yet unclear why. I guess it’s not for being male but for being guilty or a bystander of atrocities committed. I haven’t watched every part of star wars, but I remember the Witches of Dathomir, so a female circle isn’t new either, right? So let’s see how that plays out ☺️

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  Před 14 dny

      Valid points, but when I started watching this show I knew nothing about it. And the way they put some of this stuff in there stuck out blatantly. It also doesn’t help that the show contradicts so much of Star Wars that’s already established. Anakin skywalker was supposedly made by the force as a response to the Sith trying to manipulate the force in ways it shouldn’t be. And these twins girls are supposedly (maybe we’ll find out for sure later in the show) created in the same way as one of the most powerful Sith Lords was unable to do (given the witches said the Jedi wouldn’t like it if they found out how). They also wrote a character into the story that isn’t even supposed to be born yet, and him being there completely contradicts things he said in episode 1 about the Sith.
      I started looking into the show creators after the first 2 episodes were less than impressive and found that the director basically said she wants to make the gayest Star Wars.

    • @ODC_3D
      @ODC_3D Před 14 dny

      @@CamberFilmSchool to be fair, making the most gay star wars ever takes no effort at all 😂 there is nothing gay about star wars except for the random girl on girl kiss in the force awakens (that I found equally embarrassing, even comical).
      But besides that I don’t want to defend the series, but I feel, after reading many reviews by disappointed fans, that the woke critic is blown completely out of proportion and overly interpreted with biased minds. It seems more like a culture war to me than a justified critic.

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  Před 14 dny

      @ODC_3D I think the story is so bad because it stems from being crafted around trying to fit as much DEI into it as possible. They’re trying to check as many diversity boxes as possible rather than make a good story first and then find good actors to portray the story.
      The dialogue is very basic, boring, and unnecessary at many parts. Like I was saying in the video, they probably could have cut a lot that’s in it just for the sake of showing more diversity and condensed episodes 3-4 into one better episode.

    It’s not really Headland’s fault is it? She was hired by Lucasfilm, presumably to bring her sensibilities to the franchise. That’s what Lucasfilm wanted. And what are writers told to do? Write what you know. The fault lies with the person or persons who decided she was an appropriate candidate for the job of creating something in the SW universe. Having said that, there’s nothing inherently wrong in doing what she’s done. It’s a story set 200 years prior to EP 4 so attitudes would be different, just as attitudes in the real world were different 200 years ago. Look at attitudes 50 years ago. Her main fault is that she’s just not particularly good at creating, structuring and writing. It’s all very basic linear stuff. She’s all about the A plot and has no apparent facility with creating character or motivation.
    In short, I don’t know that this series is even worth getting all hot and bothered about. It’s amateurish and consequently a bit naff. This is what happens when you’re an organisation that has prioritised churning out content as opposed to telling compelling stories. You have to throw a lot of shit at the wall. Some of that shit sticks but it seems very rare.

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  Před 15 dny

      Of course it’s ultimately Disney’s fault, but if Leslye cared about writing a good Star Wars story, she would have created a compelling story first rather than simply write a crappy story around the frame of wokeness. And when people say they don’t like it, she blames fans by calling them intolerant instead of taking ownership of bad choices. I do think it is worth getting hot & bothered so that Disney knows to stop making crap like this. If there’s no backlash, then they’ll keep pushing further into madness. Look at the Dylan Mulvaney and Bud Light debacle. They dropped him quick and made a new ad pushing patriotism.
      And I’m pretty sure it’s set 100 years before episode 3. They said it’s 100 years before the “rise of the empire”.

      Yes, it's a state of mind that society is trying to force people into believing and affirming is actually biological fact.

    Yea no need to talk about The Brady Bunch or anti-wokeness or hard work or destroying the nuclear family or history blah blah blah. This guy is pushing a political agenda and clutching his pearls - this show sucks pure and simple because it is a badly crafted show, working off of a poorly written script that is inconsistent with its own source mythology. Thats it. A well-made show of any kind in any genre in any franchise can generally do whatever it wants, deviate from expectations however it wants, introduce new dimensions to characters and narrative in whatever way it wants IF the fundamentals of the show are solid. The Acolyte is not that show.
    Minimal technical criticism and mostly conservative snowflaking from this dude.

      The story is literally transparently crafted around ideas of CRT & Trans ideology. Thats why it sucks. The majority of people know those concepts are ridiculous.

      @@CamberFilmSchool You’re saying that the show sucks for ideological reasons? Not technical reasons? So my last sentence is dead on then, right?

      @@CamberFilmSchool cause I came here looking for yet another takedown on how its a terrible script, bad dialogue, completely contradictory narrative elements and phoned-in performances and really your argument was mainly ideological wincing

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  Před 15 dny

      Some of both. I mentioned in the video how there was unnecessary dialogue that didn’t contribute to making the story any better. And it being boring because the show dragged on with not much happening as it focused on ways of showing those ideological points rather than being a simple good vs evil Star Wars story.

      @CamberFilmSchool  Před 15 dny +1

      That’s a valid point. Perhaps I’ll make another video focusing on poor story dialogue and bad filmmaking in general after the next episode comes out.
