      Those shows didn't take off either. They just became more recognised after the fact, when their cast went on to become more famous for doing other things and drew more eyes upon their previous work.
      TMAWL for example, only got about 1.8 million viewers at it's peak. To put that into context, a rerun of the Japanese Grand Prix around the same on the BBC pulled in 2.8 million viewers.

    • @IAmPez
      @IAmPez Pƙed rokem

      @@jamesinhenley Yes, I am English. It wasn't really "well before" though, TMAWL actually began between series 3 and 4 of Peep Show, so it was aired concurrently and arguably still before PS really got to the full extent of it's popularity and exposure. To put into context, the Mark and Sophie wedding arc hadn't even happened yet when TMAWL aired.
      TMAWL still never really took off or got noticed at all until after it's initial run, when more people had become entwined with Peep Show after it's own run had ended and people eventually found their way to shows like TMAWL, the live viewing figures for the time corroborate this.
      Besides all that, clearly a large part of my original comment was referencing the Bruiser example given. Barely a soul would know or remember Bruiser if M&W via Peep Show, or Martin Freeman via The Office and his later woks etc never happened.

      Little Britain and the redhead woman, am' I Bovered -Catherine Tate kinda ushered the way out for sketch shows. The Fast Show and Scotland's brilliant, but increasingly stale Chewing the Fat were kind of becoming what the kids would deem nowaday's "Meme" Factories, basically catchprase comedy. Peter's entry was a breath of fresh air, for me anyway at the time. But Sitcom was back in fashion. Brian Dooley had penned the glorous "Smoking Room" and folk like the League of Gentlemen and Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan etc smelled the wind and knew Sitcoms were the buzz. Dickhead or not Graham Linehan can craft a Sitcom and Sitcoms became trendy again. Now quickfire is coming back again. Sitcoms had an air of twee about them. Only Fools and Horses devolved from lampoonish reflection on Class in Modern London, became Soap Opera. The Last Summer Wine had become Heartbeat. Aging folk rallying round the telle to watch thier character's next misadventure. Quickfire jokes and such like Panel shows are still a hit and with the " Vine" generation, one off gaffs are returning. Have I got News used to be funny and satirical, around the 2000's Angus Deaton left and guest hosts chimed in. The guy behind " Whose Line is it Anyway" stepped in and made the countershow - Mock the Week. It personally lacked the teeth Have I had, but it showcased fresher talent. Josh Widdecombe etc. It enjoyed itself with Dara hosting - it was a recipe for sucess. Buzzcocks was floundering and it showed. (Mark... Oh Mark) Now Panel shows were the new sketch.

      No more evidence needed than Channel 4 actually has a 24\7 youtube channel dedicated to 8 out of 10 Cats. Seriously. 24\7 hour channel dedicated to a panel show. Only Discovery or Christmas or Porn gets a 24\7 channel. Obviously there's a Venn diagram somewhere that corrolates Climate change, shagging and David Mitchell's middle class rage in a Santa hat into a profitable subgroup... Outside of me
