- Fran comes back from holiday to discover that Manny has resigned and is now working next door at Goliath Books. Left to his own devices, Bernard has let things slip a little, and is living amid a pile of rubbish, rotting food and dead badgers. Understandably Fran wants to get Manny back.

One of the things I love about Black Books is how ridiculous and surreal it can get, yet the characters are so believable.
Vojife : Some of the places I’ve worked make this seem not so surreal.
@@censusgary exactly....know people and situations for sure!! very recognisable
"dont eat muffins while im developing you!" i love simon pegg XD
Simon Pegg loves you too 💕😻💕
“He’s bending down now, ahh look he’s getting up again. I knew he’d do that”
😂😂
With that little wiggle of his. The wiggle of Judas.
Lol found this comment just as he said it.
"Half Iago, half Fu Manchu... all bastard!"
Simon Pegg doesn't play enough villains! He was awesome in this!
Bernard: ''I feel my brain falling away like wet cake''. Is this not the best existential line in literary and or televisual history?
Up he goes with that little wiggle of his. The wiggle of Judas XD
"The Judas boogie!"
The judas boogie
“Don’t eat muffins when I’m developing you” is one of my all time favourite lines in anything ever.
This is one of the funniest sitcoms I have ever seen, the characters are genius, the awkwardness is insane, it's just perfect
Check out Friday Night Dinner
6 dislikes, 6 workers in Goliath Books, coincidence? I don't think so
BEST COMMENT!
@@AbsoluteJokes Thanks :)
Oh it's up to 34 dislikes now. Must be a high turnover of employees at Goliath books with their fancy do-do-di-do cards 😂
Dean Mellor I was about to say the same thing.😂

"...in 2 years you could have been vice deputy sub-assistant..." - corporate policy in practice :D
Shuffling around on the floor like the worm you ARRRE!
Am I the only one that thinks this probably is the best performance by Simon Pegg?! The bit with the Fran's cigarette is absolutely epic. My all-time favourite episode BTW...:)
Carpe Diem His “Oh!” as he extinguished it in his hand sealed it.
It's definitely my favorite performance of his. He's brilliant in this episode.
Definitely some of Simon Pegg’s best work. He nails corporate management.
not sure if best, but definitely great
"Don't eat muffins while I'm developing you."
"And then it's left at the dead badger." Never fails to make my cackle.
Best episode EVER. How creepy that this is the new normal for some and how depressing that we arent leaving back in the 90's
Simply be "normal" as you interpret that and realise that governments and mass media lie constantly, always to take away our rights and to control society more.
This is brilliant. Thanks for this. Pegg’s character is everyone that you work with now.
Everybody in management ought to be made to watch this. And everyone being "managed" should just start laughing at management.
Yes, they’re called ‘wankers’.
@@sarahsnoweIndeed. If workers began laughing at and mocking their managers en masse, perhaps management wouldn't take themselves so goddamn seriously. So-called authority figures don't actually have any authority outside of what their supposed "subordinates" give them.
I love how the forbidden things sign only says "DONT" by now xd
" boil my eyebath and polish the stair rods. Delouse the duvet and tumble dry our dollies. And hoover the roof. And whistle down the chimneys"
Dylan is just brilliant my god
“Why can’t you let us have our vicious, soul-destroying breakup in peace?”
"Well, I'll come and see you!"
"I'll be dead by then"
Never fails to crack me :D
”MANNY!!! There’s no need to flinch”
Perfect, just perfect 😂😂
The wine glass with the snails! 🤣 what degenerates! I love this old program.
4:10 muffin is smooshed.
4:20 muffin miraculously reforms.
Clearly I have watched this episode too many times 🤣🤣🤣
i noticed that too, in my 4th watch now
He’s a young guy, he likes the Stereophonics, he rides a scooter. God the comedy is so deft.
Did you notice Manny used the roller towel as a rope to climb down from the window?
Simon Pegg has always also been a good physical comedian - his spin and drop after the camera falls on him 24:12 is classic XD
Simon Pegg is the embodiment of the boss of the pizza shop I just quit. His kindly Dad ran the place for twenty years, and his Dad made it the best pizza place within a 10km radius, but then he took over, and within mere months the place has assumed the foul stench of corporate greed and microcontrolling, bureaucratic rules. If I were pettier I'd send the bloke a link to this episode. Great stuff
I think you should send it
I have a friend who I have known for 15 years, we went to high school together. Everytime we meet, we do a refference from Black Books, and it’s our thing😂 One of the best sitcoms I have ever seen, makes me smile and laugh literally on command😂
Go team!
Go team!
I showed this episode to my mom once, and she went through the whole thing thinking Bernard and Manny were a couple
They're not?
Typical that anytime a man isn't chasing a woman that women assert that he must be gay. Reeks of insecurity.
@@Bubba__Sawyer Chill out, bruh. Stop getting offended over nothing. She just misinterpreted the jokes about Bernard's over-possessiveness of Manny
@@MrUndersolo Bernard thought he was gay once, but then he found out about the prohibitive standards of hygiene... and all that dancing!
@@Bubba__Sawyer I think you'll find that there's a joke - or at least something funny - in the post you responded to. You may have to reset your sense of humour
Simon Pegg's performance is so fucking spot on.
In "Spaced" and "Shaun of the Dead" Simon Pegg fought zombies ... in this episode of "Black Books", he is one and nurtures new ones ... Hilarious!
Manny is adorable.
3 comic geniuses and the result is the best, funniest and dark as hell episode ever made in any sitcom.
That scene when Bernard lights up his cigarette and "coughs it" down his glass must for sure have been shot a couple of times over... Haha!
If you watch the outtakes on the DVD it does
love how the muffin kept changing
I love how this show embraces the shitty parts of life. It's honest in a way few shows are today; they don't bother sugarcoating the truth - claiming Bernard and Manny are good for each other, finding aesthetic angles to make the actors look better - they just accept it, and we love it for that. It's refreshing.
The Goliath manager is just as abusive and cruel as Bernard is, in many of the exact same ways - it's only so much worse because he pretends to be the good guy. He's the perfect foil for Bernard, who says exactly what he thinks, lets Manny at least be himself, and makes us laugh. They have the same abusive behaviours but at least Bernard comes by it honestly.
Bernard and Manny's relationship is still unhealthy but it's also endearing somehow. They abuse and they shout and they enable each other's worst habits, but they need each other. We see in this episode that they really do care about each other, and you can call it friendship or you can call it codependency but it's still the closest connection real people can really have, Fran included. They'd both most likely be dead without the other, Manny exploited and drained by a corporate web til there was nothing left and Bernard upside down on the floor of a pub toilet, or choking in his own filth after he'd driven everyone else away.
Yeah, life is shit, but at least acknowledging that makes it a little more real; everyone in the show is an emotionally unhealthy, selfish (well, except maybe Manny), self-destructive, incompetent arse, but we'd much rather watch/know/be them than the condescending, one-dimensional, constantly happy ones all around them (Fran's cousin, Black Books' various competitors, etc). They're real and interesting and entertaining and we can see ourselves in them; this imperfection and awkwardness, and this kind of connection, is as real as it gets for real people. It's silly and childish and it's mundane and it's slightly dark, it's comfortable, and it doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. There's no illusions of grandeur, it's just life. Small-scale, constant, stupid little life, square in the face.
If we're going to be here we might as well not waste our time pretending to be something we're not, and have a kick as our livers give one last hurrah. Thrive with the worst people doing what you love, smoking and drinking and making snarky comments, rather than squeeze yourself into a facade, because nonstop energy is the real unnatural thing. Be consistently happy, genuinely if you can help it, and revel in your small, shitty happiness. Be an overgrown garden on an alchie's head or a sticky bit on the floor, feel like you're in heaven, be an arse who can't pack a suitcase right, the world can take it. Life of all muffin dispensers and carrot juice would be boring, anyway.
okay, which one of my english teachers are you?
Is it really comfortable thought? Comfortable means harmless. The way I see it, whenever comedy is harmless it's missed the mark.
Ever considered taking up writing yourself? Seems like you're worth a lot more then the youtube comment section
Nice dissertation there.
I feel shortness of breath and shortness of word: This is exactly how I feel about this show and if I added anything perfection would be spoiled, cheers in oxygen, mate! *gasp*
I just want the Manny and Bernard dolls! ❤️
Don't eat muffins when I'm developing you! - It's a game you have to learn the rules because it's not a game! What a psycho,
One of the best episodes 😂😂😂👍
When Fran slowly turns the puppet around.. Man, it gets me every time hahah
12:53 I want my very own Manny and Bernard dolls🤣
Probably Simon Pegg's creepiest role.
@Nicholas #51 blonde hair guy with glasses. Also from Shaun of the Dead
Haven’t you seen the editor from doctor who?
@Nicholas #51 also recommend one of his shows 'Spaced'. Watch when high if you'd like.
@Nicholas #51 Google the name FFS.
He's gone from acomedy writer to working with Tom Cruise on Mission Impossible and writing/acting in Star trek.
This episode kind of establishes Bernard and the head of Goliath books as two demonic entities. I mean listen to the line: "He's mine! Get your own human plaything!"
i am now completely obsessed with a Demon Bernard surviving off of Manny's life force!
It’s two different kinds of darkness- debauchery and conformity. They eat your soul from different directions.
@@censusgary Yeah but c'mon, given the choice who would work with Pegg? Bernard may ba a deeply flawed character
but deffo the lesser of two evils
The haaaair Manny! 😂😂😂
In this episode it is clear that SImon Pegg is absolute genius!
Ellen Szokky As far as his legacy goes he really did peak while working in UK. Yes American films brought him more popularity and prosperity. Nevertheless most folks will remember him for his work with Edgar Wright.
Especially together with bill bayley partners
For me he's not. His acting is too mechanical and predictable, it lacks something, something Bailey or Moran have got. Some kind of looseness. He is stiff and boring.
This is probably my favourite performance by him. It's so spot on. You can tell he's actually been employed by someone like this
He's mine! Manny's smile as Bernard barks abusive chore commands is haunting
"Dont eat muffins while I'm developing you!!"
Bill works for Simon. The "Spaced" worm has turned.
he's no Bilbo anymore....
And hoover the roof! And whistle down the chimneys!
It's funny how in other shows people find inconsistencies on sets ... Black Books shop is such a mess every time the prop guys doesn't have to worry about details...
Manny's experience at Goliath Books is almost exactly like mine when I worked at Barnes and Noble. Awful.
Worked for a translation agency once, couldn’t get any worse…
"Don't eat muffins when I'm developing you". One of the best pieces of advice I ever received in corporate.
4:57 I like how the camera is watching crime
Haha, and there's "non crime" at the back. 11:15
Manny and Bernard. The greatest bromance of all time!!!!
Everything in this "Goliath corporation thing" was so well done, that I couldn't laugh even once...
Simon is beyond awesome.
SO many bachelors actually live like this.
I hardly ever write in public comments but Dead Parrot is one of the best subscriptions i have. Audio always good and well designed page. Good onya D.P.
@12:40 I WANT A MANNY-DOLL...
... NOW!!!
on the door: clopend
Which door?
@@MrSmithers exactly
Ah, I'm so happy somebody else noticed that! (Four years ago ...)
Hilarious! And I’m not even at my brain is falling away like wet cake yet.
What a role reversal for Bill and Simon from Spaced.
The episode is hilarious! Simon Pegg is fantastic! It definitely is one of the best guest's appearances on the show.
I know how certain religious groups look exactly like the guys from the bookshop, it's damn scary how well it's done
It is sad and funny how much this show resembles my life
The regenerating muffin
Simon Pegg is proper funny in this. To quote the man himself, "He, he, it's funky."
up with this, i will not be put
This episode made me want to clean my room.
Oh no! I hope you got over it 😁
"Every day is another betrayal."
Excellent episode of a delightful show. Superb performance by Simon Pegg
I have the exact same hair and I’ve always felt judged but I’ve never changed it. And I never will!
This and Spaced and we have almost the whole main cast for Shaun of The Dead.
Dont eat muffins when im developing you 😂
It also monitors your toilet visits and scans your retinas every 80 seconds..Just making sure you’re still you! Some people might call that invasive, but we like to think it shows we care ❤️❤️❤️
He smashing his muffin then next scene it’s a normal muffin then it’s a smashed muffin again.
I feel like such a nerd leaving this comment.
Sinister Simon Pegg lol
There. There he is. Half Iago. Half Fu Manchu. All bastard.
The Wiggle of Judas.
The actors look like they're about to burst out laughing.
Whoah, the manager of the rival shop is then-unknown Simon Pegg.
Check out 'Spaced', created by Pegg. It came out a couple of years before this.
yeah, in spaced, bill bailey played simon pegg's boss
no he wasn't "then unknown"
Simon was already working with Bill and Edgar Wright even before Spaced. Bill Bailey's sketch-show Is It Bill Bailey? from the late 90s was directed by Edgar Wright and had Simon on the cast.
@@MrLador yup, and Simon and Bill were brilliant there too.
I remember that the cash machine at Goliath Books said "Duty-to-do!" and not just beeping. Why isn't it here?
I love Simon pegg
Selling books is a game. It has rules. You need to learn those rules (yeah) and get serious about them because it’s not a game 😂😂😂
16:12 was me back when my parents used to sign me up for team sports as a kid : /
Bernard and Manny literally have the same relationship that loads of Irish couples have. The unwillingness to apologize and hate each other, but still able to have fun with it lol
I adore this dialogue.
M: No, wait a minute. This is all about you, isn't it, Fran? You're being totally selfish. Why can't you let us have our vicious soul-destroying breakup in peace?
B: He's right. We are in pieces and you only care about having a place to hang around.
M: Yeah, thanks.
B: Not at all. It's never going to be like it was, Fran.
M: Never. I agree.
B: We agree. Manny and I opposed on every point.
M: Well put.
B: Thank you.
M: My pleasure...
I love how aggressively bernard and manny side with eachother 😭
Nice detail at 21:59 he used that hands towel to escape
"It also monitors your toilet breaks and scans your retinas every eight seconds.."
...dude was already in 2024...
All these actors moved on to stand up, Dylan Moran & Bill Bailey. Fran...is in "FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER" & "EPISODES" Both great series😅😅😅
Here's one sitcom in which I would love to see a reboot. Genius.
I'm off to tumble dry my doilies!
That Simon finally made a usable take @200 is amazing😂
Is it Photoshopped or did they just get a photo of Mark Williams?
I need one of Manny's muffins, You see how he destroys it when surprised, then a perfect muffin is there after lol
Goliath Books is a lot like Wal-Mart...
Its a lot like a lot of retail places in general. Thank god at my retail job we can choose our own passwords. Fishslut1 for example.
I used to make that oven cleaner joke so much when I was sick and/or in the oven cleaner aisle
I love Bernard...he's so cruel, so realistic!
Don't eat muffins when I am developing you.
One of the best shows ever.
This is Simon Pegg's best performance to date. No competition
