  • Dr. John McDougall, writer of the Starch Solution books and many others on the starch based vegan diet has passed away at 77 years old. Does this make a starchy high carb low fat plant based diet unhealthy? That's the average age of most standard American diet people.

My grandfather died at age of 101 years old. He ate potatoes EVERY SINGLE DAY. But it wasn't about the potatoes. He was 100% self-sufficient. He grew all his food and animals by himself. Only thing he bought from shop was salt and sugar. Also he lived in non-stressful environment.. And drank a couple shots of moonshine every morning 😉 He was NEVER sick. He lived in small village in Ukraine. Also his neighbors right next to him lived over 100 years old. Coincidence? I don't think so. It's about toxicity, stress, environment, community.. and genes too. But you are the one who pulls the trigger.
P.S. The reason why many ppl can't tolerate anything else than meat, is because we have damaged our body throughout the years. But everything can be fixed.

McDougal started his diet in the late 70s to early 80s. Dave Mac journey isn't even close to that on the carnivore diet. The positive results he has received do not debunk the health risk of a high red meat diet long term. He's at increased risk of heart disease and another stroke. As soon as I had my wisdom teeth out as a teen, my health rapidly plummeted. Then i later had two root canals… sick 24/7 for all the years I had it. Whether super low level… just dripping down back of throat.. or brain inflammation, digestive death… and more… Finally gave in and had the dang stuff extracted. Turns out there was black mold in fragments left inside. My body had been in nonstop hell war against bacteria since my teens when I got it. I was 50 when I got them extracted and in one day the dripping in my throat stopped and body calmed. Then I got an infection under a crown on other side. From a simple cavity beneath. My throat starts dripping again and I get sicker and sicker. Digestion stops again. Did all I could to clean it.. no sugar.. avoiding fruit.. no grains.. no seed oils… all the things… Finally went in two days ago. They take the crown off and clean out BLACK bacteria again. My swelling immediately goes down and I’m digesting again. I’m beyond frustrated with my body and know my genetic mutations make me a mess. But my gosh… I’m just going to say that more and more… I suspect that people who fight like crazy to be healthy but can’t seem to find an answer…. could be in a losing war with hidden teeth problems. Nearly killed me. I pray every day for Jesus to come take us out of this imperfect world where Satanic powers that be will not tell us the truth of all things and keep us from our right to heal. Can’t believe how much I whipped myself when the sinister trash was impossible for me to reach. I’d rather die now than get a root canal. I hate losing teeth but finding out now how many lives have been wrecked by root canals and docs not knowing what they’re doing.. (surprise surprise) … I’ll take any route before that. John McDougall certainly was a great nutritionist and helped a good many people toward better health, myself included. Nobody gets to be in this world indefinitely. Thanks Mr. McDougall for all you've done. Most studies support his assertion that long-term keto is dangerous for the body, despite shallow CZcams talking head interpretations to the contrary. Keto is certainly dangerous if done ineffectively which describes the vast majority of carnivores. He wasn't wrong. Everyone has health weaknesses that at advanced age can come to the forefront, McDougall had more than his share & was sharp as a tack till the end. Salute!

@@-astrangerontheinternet6687 Not long term studies, rather long-term body keto state and the relative health of the body in long term keto stretches as compared to short-term stretches, or 'pretend' keto, or no ketosis at all. In terms of studies, one recent study that I found compelling was the C. Gardner 'twins' study. Here's discussion from 3 wks ago of a different study. czcams.com/video/TVJKIgsY_g4/video.htmlsi=0w9fMQFHEw3H1YvB&t=1947
My personal keto stretches validated by multiple keto strip readings daily, last only 2 or 3 days followed by a couple weeks outside the ketogenic state (though I avoid many food types in either state). My suggestion was that the science I have reviewed overall seems to me, to point to better health being found in shorter keto stretches and greater keto risk factors to health being found in longer keto stretches, this with the caveat that one never really knows. This is not heavily studied. It is not definitively proven that long-term keto stretches can setback health - or improve it.
Perhaps more importantly than any of this is the fundamentally important question that so many supposed carnivores don't have the answer to, and that simple question is, 'am I in ketosis right now, or not?' at any given time. Without definitively answering this question daily (let's say constantly) for one's self, one takes an incredible risk, a serious risk - because 'pretend' keto is arguably the most dangerous diet to health on the planet imho. So my advice #1 is to invest in keto test strips or electronic test device, if one is ever going to play with that dietary pattern. I don't think anyone would argue that 'pretend keto' is a path to better health outcomes as it fairly obviously is not. Edit - I want to add that I am referring to the twins study, not the Netflix special on the study - I've never seen it but did learn they are very different things with different information and presumptions made in the special that were not in the study. I don't know the details of that. I look forward to the microbiome paper that is due out from the study.
If one thinks that one is in ketosis, but they are not, then they are not going to metabolize fat, or get any of the other benefits of the keto state. One single grape will take me out of ketosis immediately for the next 36 hours. I've heard it said that 'everybody's different'. I don't think we're that different that someone can eat a grape and stay in ketosis, instead I expect they will be bounced out just like happens to me. I also don't buy the concept of 'partial ketosis' or semi-ketogenic, it's all or nothing.

He suffered a major stroke at 18 and his medical work goes un surpassed. I’m just glad he lived that long as he saved my life . I have MS and McDougall showed me what to eat to be healthier by eating a starch based diet. My health was rapidly going downhill eating meat and dairy and he showed me it was the food . I also ate large amounts of chocolate until this point. 6 years on my MS is stabilised and instead of being on 10 meds a day I have stopped taking all meds. Now I only eat spuds 🥔 with vegetables and other starches. Dr Peter Roger’s has called John McDougall the best doctor in the world as he healed thousands and thousands of patients from being fat and sick. Loren Lockman who is my other major mentor grows all his own organic food so I expect him to live much longer plus he exercises and is very strong too. I just hope he doesn’t get some trauma from an accident in the future.

In 2001, Atkins's coronary arteries were 30 to 40 percent blocked, according to Patrick Fratellone, his cardiologist and employee.
In 2002, Atkins went into cardiac arrest, leading many of his critics to point to this episode as proof of the inherent dangers in the consumption of high levels of saturated fat associated with the Atkins diet. In numerous interviews, however, Atkins stated that his cardiac arrest was not the result of poor diet, but was rather caused by a chronic infection.
On April 8, 2003, Atkins was admitted to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain after having slipped on ice and hit his head, but fell into a coma. He died on April 17, at age 72.
After his death, his widow stated that Atkins's coronary-artery disease had progressed in the final years of his life with a new blockage, a procedure to remedy the blockage, and that he was taking heart-rhythm medication.
A report from the New York medical examiner's office leaked a year after his death said that Atkins had a history of heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension, and that at the time of his death he weighed 258 pounds (117 kg).

Dental plaque is a sticky substance made from leftover food particles and saliva that mix in your mouth. If you don't brush properly after meals, it begins to form and build up on your teeth. This is problematic because plaque contains bacteria, which can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.
Atherosclerosis plaque is made up of deposits of fatty substances, cholesterol, calcium, and fibrin. As it builds up in the arteries, the artery walls become thickened and stiff.
Vitamin C supplementation is associated with accelerated early atherosclerosis measured by carotid IMT compared to a protective association with vitamin C from food. Theadverse association of vitamin C supplementation may be greater in patients with higher serum cholesterol levels. The current results provide a potential mechanistic understanding for the observed differences between Vitamin C in supplements vs food in prior studies. Given these observations, vitamin C supplementation does not appear to be currently advisable for prevention or treatment of atherosclerosis. (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3447163/)

I was surprised that such a clever man could be so sucked in by this evil agenda. As for his early demise (if 77 can be considered early these days), he did look a bit like a shrivelled up skeleton over the last few years - Mary, his wife, looks the same - they remind me of egyptian mummies and I think this is because the body does need a bit of fat - not the processed junk stuff, but a wholefood, like an avocado every so often is beneficial if one's weight allows for it. God made avocadoes delicious for a reason - clearly He wants us to eat them.

I was more hopeful of something like: While it appeared towards the end of his life he had a balanced diet, he in fact was changing diets so quickly that it merely gave the illusion of a balanced diet. At the beginning of the meal he was raw vegan and ate salad, then he became cooked food vegan and ate some sweet potato, then carnivore to eat some beef, only to become vegan again and eat some mung beans.

He avoided Olive Oil...should have been using Greek polyphenol-rich Kalamata oil, the best green colored Extra Virgin Greek Olive Oil, he was almost 78.

Then there's Warren Buffet in his nineties. He drinks 6 cans of coke a day, likes candy and ice cream, hates vegetables, and eats beef daily, but he will not exceed more then 2500 cal.

I did that starch diet for a while but never felt good on it. Felt much better on raw vegan or fruitarian. But even better as a liquidarian. Juices, teas, bone broths.
Have loads of energy when I don't eat much.
    Anyway RIP McDougall 😢

You only gave starch based without fruit a week?
That sounds a little unfair considering you've eaten rotting meat and did unire therapy.
I've been eating mostly rice and other starches plus some wild, lean meat and fish and some vegetables since covid, I didn't have a single zit in the last 4 years and I'm 100% regular, never constipated, usually go 2 times a day about 10-30 minutes after eating. (I avoid wheat and diary most of the time).
Being relaxed after eating is normal I think, that's when you body actually heals/recover, if you want maximum energy duing the day, you just fast and/or eat lightly to keep cortisol/glucagon up.
My dogs just chill after eating, it's pretty normal, and they only eat meat.

You should probably read The Fibre fuelled cookbook which has tests for histamines and fodmap's so you can test your gut and possibly heal it one and for all. This book is actually written by a gastroenterologist that has actually seen what you are talking about with reactions to the food you are consuming which are most likely at the root of your rashes / eczema and acne like symptoms and also mood disorders, bloating and gas. This book could help a lot of people diagnose or to at least help people know what test to ask for at their doctors or gastroenterologist appointment so they can determine what could be the cause of their digestive issues, which most Ex Vegans, carnivore, keto, paleo, primal dieters have experienced.

rip to that man. but i wholeheartedly agree content creators always look for the opportunity to give a polarized view a situation to fit their narratives they seek to captialize from. i remember when the black panther actor chad boseman before he died of cancer, he looked extremely underweight. then we heard of his passing less than a year later. i remember hearing reports of him attempting to remedy his ailment with a vegan diet and homeopathy so he never sought treatment and was confident he could beat it. im sure he spent lots of money wiith natural doctor consults, and like you said its not always diet, it could be exposeure to toxic environments, elements or maybe lack of proper day to day protocols for coping with stress or sickness. we dont have all the answers.

Well surprise, surprise, Dr Mosley, the UK’s health guru died suddenly a few weeks ago at only 67, a big advocate of the Mediterranean diet of meat, fish and eggs and then the five:2 diet that was a worldwide bestseller, so that diet doesn’t look great either.

I can eat potatoes... no negative results... but I don't eat a lot of anything... just a little of almost everything... except liver... hate that.

Genetics determines health and longevity. Great genes will allow a person to abuse himself and still live a long time. Look at Keith Richards. How the hell is he still alive?
Besides it’s not the number of years, it’s how much living was done in those years. A person can live a jam packed, full life and die at sixty. He may have actually lived much more than a guy who was very cautious and careful and died when he was 90 but didn’t do much.
I can eat vegetables, fruit and grains and if I didn’t mind constant abdominal pain , gas and bloating, I’d only eat those foods. I’d prefer to eat a mostly starch based diet. I love all carbs but my body doesn’t. If I could live on Krispy Kreme donuts, pizza, beer, wine, chocolate, cigarettes and cannabis, I would.
I can follow a FODMAP diet and eat CERTAIN grains and fruit and veggies. That and with meat and cheese, my life is much better. I don’t follow any diet for philosophical reasons. I eat what my body can handle and which makes me feel healthy and happy.

I feel so sad for his family, rest in peace John! But oh dear, if this guy was a carnivore the stroke at 18 wouldn't have made a difference, the cause would have been the carnivore diet

McDougall took the Clot Shot, which he also recommended everyone else take. That did him in.

It needs to be said, he's yet another victim of the youknowwhats from 3 years ago. Tons of people, including very young ones, have been dying in their sleep since 2021. It happened to a friend of mine after she got hers 3 years ago. Dr. McDougall DID get the original ones but later advised against the follow up ones.
