  • Kai Sotto was projected to be the first Filipino-grown player in the NBA; however, the 21-year-old did not hear his name in the NBA Draft. Why? Questionable decision-making by Kai Sotto's family and agents has led to the youngster making some crucial mistakes that temporarily closed the doors to Kai's lifelong dream: the NBA. So, let's analyze those crucial mistakes made by Kai Sotto.

Finally some sanity. This is actually the first video I've seen which is pointing out the obvious issues around his career to date. Sotto's career to date is definitely one characterised by bad advice. I wasn't aware of the Real Madrid offer, but that just further illustrates the point. If he had accepted that offer, it could have been a perfect opportunity to develop his game away from the stupid hysteria in his home country where, let's be honest, he was hailed as the Second Coming purely because he is such an anomaly (being 7"3). If this wasn't his preferred option (and fair enough, leaving home for a country where you probably don't speak the language etc is pretty daunting) then signing with a big, proven NCAA college, such as those you mentioned, was the next best option. This would have allowed him to develop his game without the challenges of playing against grown men in the NBL who are bigger, stronger and tougher. Or, in the G-League where his complete lack of speed and agility was exposed. While Giddey, LaMelo, RJ Hampton etc were ready to prove they were on the cusp of playing against men (when in Australia on the Next Stars program) , Sotto was nowhere near their physical level, particularly as he was playing centre where strength and power is essential. And whoever told him playing in Japan was a good idea obviously knows nothing about what it takes for NBA teams to take you seriously. If anything, he would have been better to keep working at it in Australia. As it stands, it looks like he has missed his moment to step up to the NBA. I just can't see it happening. It's a shame as he comes across as a genuinely nice kid.

You nailed it, I think declining that offer from Real Madrid was the start of his management's many mistakes, adding to that I see little to no development on his game at all up to this day, probably the reason why Orlando Magic g league team has opted for him not to play on 2 of its game (still hopeful that he'll have minutes next game), the talent is there, I have doubts on his work ethic but I can think this is still fixable, but most of all questionable management team.

I blame his agent. All the things you mentioned are pretty much spot on. The latest is accepting Orlando's invite and NOT guaranteeing playing time. His agent probably took that for granted. I mean why invite a player if you're not going to play him? I saw another youtube video explaining why Bol Bol and Mo Bamba were waived by Orlando Magic. They didn't work for it, they lack focus and drive to stay in the NBA. Did Orlando see the same in their practice with Kai and that's the reason they're not giving him playing time? Hope not. But still his agent should be pushing him, if not the NBA farm team, go to Europe where TALL and experienced big men will try to bully him and he can learn to stand his ground and not fall for head fakes. Definitely don't play in an Asian league....sheesh. If you want scouts watching you play, NBA farm team or Europe are your BEST option.

A guy who only wants fame wouldn't forfeit his vacation after the end of the nbl season to play in another league and then right after that train his ass off to play in the summer league to the point that he injured himself. Yes he shouldn't have skipped the stint in Europe and force a gilas stint at the cost of his slot in the g-league, but that's more his agents' fault than anyone else's. Past is past. Right now, kai should do everything he can to get at least a two way deal or a g-league offer. If he doesn't get a contract, and decides to return to the j-league, he should remember that his level should be world-import level and not asian level. When i watched him this past j-league, he acts as if he is an ASIAN import. For purposes of trying to get into the NBA, HE should be at the level of the world import and be competing for the best import award in the japan b-league.

Kai Sotto is still very young he is still 21 until May 11. His reason for improvement since this post 11 months ago is his size, weight & skill. Kai is now 7'3" and 246.04 pounds, turning 22 years old this May 11, 2002. That is the real reason for his improvement. He cannot easily be pushed around anymore. When he was 19 yrs. old he went to the USA to train, he was 7'1" and 218 pounds. He joined the G league.
The pandemic hit all nations and Sotto went back to the Philippines. After the pandemic, he joined Australia's NBL, was already 7'2" nearing 7'3", and was 225 pounds. After NBL, he played for Gilas Phil. team & beat China for the FIBA World Cup while nursing a back injury after his summer league in the U.S..
He later joined the Japan B League and he is now 7'3", and 235 pounds, he currently weighs 246.04 pounds thanks to his strength & conditioning coach Mel Lantin who is always with him.....
So now, let us compare his statistics to NBA big guys. Antetokounmpu is 6'9" and 242 pounds, 29 yrs old. Victor Wembanyana is 7'4" , 209 pounds, 20 yrs. old. Chet Holmgren is 7'1" 207 pounds, 22 yrs old; Nicola Jokic is 6'9" or 6'10" and 283.8 pounds, 29 yrs. old.
Therefore, as Kai grows older and meets his target weight of 270 pounds, BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) of 22 which is normal, and borderline weight before obesity, he will be a powerhouse. His father Irvin Sotto is a retired basketball player, 6'7", and weighs almost 300 pounds due to inactivity, there is no doubt Kai will gain more weight & be a powerhouse soon with his size & skill. The team that will draft Kai will be a steal for them.

Basically could be a case study for how not to develop a young player. There is a saying for every prodigy you have heard about at least 50 potential that have burned out before they could even hear about them.
Seriously hate how his peers and management made the most asinine decisions possible to hamstring his development.
Really makes you think how bad Filipinos are at making rational decisions when it comes to basketball development. We have the money, support and connections to the USA and its resources as a nation. Somehow we always come out worse than expected yet try the same old things. Truly a VAAS moment. Do the same thing and expect a different result somehow.
Honestly if we cared less about basketball and gave literally zero "support" Kai could have just went to the USA or any euro league team and developed normally.

If he wants to get those offers again from Europe or even get an invite to the G League which can be a path to an NBA contract, why not play in the World Cup against top notch competition. I would rather not have him play for the qualifiers if it meant having him in the World Cup. It just seems that Filipino fans give him too much hype where he thinks he's a star player. Coach Chot had a moment of honesty when he said that he can't give Kai the same leeway as Clarkson for Gilas because he needs more time to practice with the team.
