  • At last I got to do what is New Zealand's most popular one day Cycle Trail - Lake Dunstan Cycle Trail.
The 55km Lake Dunstan Trail takes you from Smith’s Way, just out of Cromwell to Clyde along Lake Dunstan, the Kawarau River and the stunning Cromwell Gorge.

We just did this trail and it was nice. Saying that, the transport from Clyde back to Cromwal was a huge issue as there was none available.
As a tip, we parked our bikes in Cromwall, took the car over to Clive and parked it there overnight. Went on the Intercity on that evening from Clyde back to Cromwell and had our bikes waiting for us to do the trail the next day!! In hindsight, we would only bike up after that amazing suspension bridge and turn around and bike back as the landscape does not change anymore after that. And it saves all the transport hassle. But of course, if you want to continue on bike and transport of car is not an isuue, go the whole mile as Clyde is really cute!

Sorry to hear about the transport. I guess booking it in advance would be the key! Seems like you had a great time though and thanks for the tips.

Or another option that we did.. biked smiths way (before Cromwell) to Alexandra, stayed night.. biked to Millers Flat (the Roxburgh Gorge trail), stayed the night.. then biked the Clyde trail to Lawrence. The bike company relocated our car from Cromwell to Lawrence and it was there waiting for us. Rode 3 trails over 3 days. The middle trail included a 45min jet boat trip over a part that’s not accessible to bikes. It was awesome.

Thanks Murray, yes it was good to chat to you. We will have to catch up and do a Whaka training ride in Vegas sometime over the winter.

Great video, back in Feb rode Alexandra to Cromwell in the day with similar traffic to your ride, back to Alex in late afternoon/evening and saw two other bikes! Stunning ride

Throw in a glass of wine and a bit of lunch at a winery and it will make for a good day.

Did all of that trail which is absolutely brilliant probably March/ April 22. Did the bit to Smiths Way and back one day then from the Heritage area to Clyde the next. The best part is that there are a number of other very good trails close by to Clyde / Alexandra / Roxburgh/ The Clyde to Alex river trail is more interesting than the Clyde to Alex Otago Rail Trail or do the loop. From Alex it of course continues the ORT to Middlemarch which I have done return, From Alex to Roxburgh via the Roxburgh Gorge trail which has a jet boat taxi section in the middle or short enough to do a return trip , 20 kms all up I think , and then go to the Roxburgh Dam and do the other section return which is about the same distance. Then from the Dam too Millars Flat via the Clutha Gold Trail which continues onto Lawrence. For those that are making a trip to do the Dunstan which I think is the best of all including the brilliant Queenstown/Arrowtown rides ( several) there are so many other options to do as well to make the trip really worth while even though the Dunstan is an absolute gem on its own. Other ones nearby , sort of , are the Around the Mountains from Kingston to Lumsden and then to the other side of the lake from Queenstown with the Mavora to Cecil Peak Station ( 50 kms ) being the best. Then there is the Te Anau to Manapouri river trail which has some narrow demanding sections but otherwise easy enough which is nice enough and worth doing but with so many other choices probably down the list for me. Spoilt for choice all within an hour mostly or two drive of each other.

Thanks for the insight, Central Otago is certainly a hotbed for trails and very spoilt for choice. Visiting you could easily spend a couple of weeks and not cycle the same trail twice.
