There was a short film I watched once.. and there was this one scene where most directors would’ve added a jumpscare - - but they lingered on the thing that was scary and just had you stare at it with no music for a few seconds.. it was honestly terrifying. Wish more directors would take that approach.

Just came out of it. Completely surprised with it.
I love how clear it’s made how the biggest fear we face is the one created by our minds. They just kept giving the monster ammunition just by living in fear. I think that’s how the Boogeyman was able to appear in different rooms seconds away.

In the majority of cases Childhood fears seem to center around the closet in some way, or under a bed, which is where he appears because he is fear incarnate. For a fair review of this film, you have to take cognizance of the conception of the original trilogy Boogeyman, Boogeyman 2, and Boogeyman 3, the first appearing in 2005 - not to mention the numerous other interpretations and spinoffs. What gave uniqueness to the character was the debate afterwards whether the Boogeyman existed only in the mind, or he became physically real when you believe in him, or whether he was supernatural, etc. The main problem of this new film was that the answer was clear: he was definitely real but could bleed and be killed by gun or kerosene. The mystery was not there, and the film just added to the already-too-numerous killer/monster in the house movies recently. With the many Japanese and Korean ghost stories recently, scary images and jump scares are no longer so scary as before. Whether the acting was good matters less when the basic premise was not really that engaging or interesting. Waiting for occasional frightening moments and scenes is not really worth my time.
Lastly, I would suggest that you need a longer review going into some specifics. If for many of the films you simply praise them - the production set, directing, CGI, atmosphere, acting are all good etc. and then stop there, that would be more like advertisements than true reviews. That is perhaps why I often choose to read some reviews that are strongly critical: I know where the reviewers are coming from even if I disagree with them.

I saw the '95 Boogeyman movie at the time, thinking that it might be this (based on the Stephen King short story that really creeped me out and I loved it). I was disappointed it wasn't, but I did enjoy it for what it was. I know I saw the sequel also and maybe even the 3rd installment, but I'm not sure about that. If I saw both, neither were as memorable as the first. I am eager to see this one 1. it is based on the Stephen King story 2. it's been getting pretty good buzz. Being that it's based on a short story (and a short short story), I'm not expecting a lot of explanations and details because, as you said, shining a light on things, many times, takes the creepiness away. I suppose that is the premise though of most scary things that come in the dark, that light makes things better if not makes them go away completely.

I’m actually surprised how easy you went on this movie. Story-wise it had so many interesting elements that it failed to capitalize on and instead went through every horror movie cliché until the movie ended. I agree the main character was well developed but that was it, we didn’t get to see any of the development of the dad or the sister and I thought the therapist dad was such an interesting perspective to look at. They really didn’t give any boogeyman background either, this honestly felt like an early draft that needed to be heavily reworked if they wanted the film to be anything special. But if they were going for a forgettable horror movie that just brings in some money they got it.
I didn’t find myself scared once in the film… I think a horror film that deals with grief masterfully and in a much more horrifying way is the Babadook. It’s all about the atmosphere you create and this movie just didn’t create a sensation of raw fear.
Even if you disagree, I think you will find no one will talk about this movie in a few years, it didn’t really do anything special, unless of course they decide to pump out sequels.
What I will give credit for is that the movie looked amazing, the visuals and the colors, the creative shot choices were all fantastic. And there was this one scene early on in the therapy office that involved a very unstable man, and this scene really kept the audience on edge, but the movie failed to keep the momentum from that going in my opinion.

I agree with much of what you said. The previous Boogeyman movies were not too good to begin with, but at least the Boogeyman was kept a mystery: whether it was a figment of the imagination, whether it was supernatural, or it was in the mind but could become real if the victim really believed in him. If the character originated purely from our fears, then much background information might not really be necessary. But in the film, he was definitely real and could even be killed, and the movie then simply degenerated into a "there is some stranger/monster living in my house" movie including all the standard horror movie cliches. Different people may find some scenes scary or otherwise, but I personally did not find it too suspenseful, and seeing kids wandering off by themselves in the dark interminably until the next "scare" happens might not be very good use of your time.

You know, I'm surprised to see so many people enjoyed this. For sure, it wasn't bad at all, but I kinda felt like we'd seen it all before, and not all that long ago either.
Babadook, Smile, both featured a monster manifesting itself from the victim's grief/depression/guilt, and in unique ways. To me this felt a bit like it was just rehashing the likes of those.
And even the tooth on the string, brought me right back to The Ring where Rachel inexplicably spits up an electrode from the hospital Samara was in.
The creature was gross, the characters were decently portrayed, but the film just didn't really do anything new at all, for me.

I just looked at the short story’s plot summary, and I think the OP’s reply to you is missing some context.
From what I looked up, short story is actually centered around Lester, that minor character who dies in the film’s first act. The short story ends with Lester wanting to speak with Dr. Harper one last time (who was the father character in the movie), only for “Dr. Harper” to shed its disguise and reveal itself as the Boogeyman. I just wanted to say that, since the OP’s reply might have made it sound like the movie’s female therapist character turned out to be the Boogeyman.
Basically, this movie seems to be both an adaptation of King’s story and simultaneously a sequel to it. So the film’s plot is more about what happens to Harper’s family, after the (loosely adapted) events of the original short story.
