    As a fellow bootcamp grad, I would like to point out that most bootcamps don't cover algorithms and data structures in depth. If you're looking to enter software engineering, you will likely need to take some time teaching yourself these more CS-related skills. I have and it has been a blessing; my general coding ability has increased hugely. I can also recommend AlgoExpert! I tried LeetCode, but found a lot of the questions to be very obscure and poorly written. AlgoExpert is genuinely a fantastic service and I thank Clement and Antoine for setting it up 👍

    I’m at the end of my third year in a computer science degree and I can tell you that they don’t teach you ANYTHING about full stack development. They have a masters degree program that deals with all of that stuff. I’m in the hole tens of thousands of dollars in student debt, and I’ve taken only TWO programming classes, at 4 lecture hours per week. The first two years was all general education and math up to calculus 3, and my entire third year was spent learning digital circuits, algorithm design and 2 Java classes (amounting to maybe half of a textbook from 2018). If you’re considering a software development career but aren’t 100% sure, then for the love of God, don’t waste your money on a bachelor’s in CS. Everything I’ve learned about full stack development (frameworks, front end, back end, database management) was learned on my own. I wish I had chosen a boot camp instead

    The only reason i chose to get a degree in computer science is to be "Safe rather than sorry". Whether you study computer science or go to a bootcamp, you will always have to teach yourself programming anyway. Ive learned that everybody is self taught no matter what! Classes only teach the basics you have to create your own projects to really learn languages in depth and get familiar with everything it has to offer.

    I totally agree. I attended London's FlatIron bootcamp and I wasn't ready to smash a coding interview straight after graduating. I was ready to talk about my projects, the different architectures/stacks I used, even specifics about what functions were doing and how they'd been optimised. But if you gave me a bunch of algos to solve without using inbuilt methods like .sort() then I just couldn't do it. If you are thinking of doing a bootcamp that's great, it really benefitted me and lots of others, particularly helping with commitment since putting in 10 hours a day of learning is not something I'm self-disciplined enough to do for 4 months straight without the structure of a course. BUT be aware that you're likely going to need to work very hard immediately after graduating to learn what's going on under the hood of whatever language you're using, learn about data structures better than they will teach you, and ultimately learn to think in the kind of logical step-by-step problem solving way that will allow you to write solutions in code to problems that aren't: 'use React.js to render a bunch of API returns on a page in a neat way with some light conditional logic'

    I use a video game anology to explain how someone can become a computer programmer
    Lets say, to become a programmer you need 1000 experience points or about a level 10 character
    If you join a coding boot camp without programming experience, it would be like joining a wizard guild as a level one character with little to no experience, you will feel like you are falling behind.
    If you already have a (unrelated) degree, but you learned to study, maybe you are a level 5 character, now you just need to learn from some of the more advanced online tutorials, UDEMY , free code camp, choose your weapon. Your best approach is to just stick with it, until the concepts sink in.
    - If you have a STEM degree (which means you have the technical and math background to understand algorithms) then you are likely a level 8 character. You are almost there. This person is coming in at level 8, they can easily learn a programming language. I would think these are the people who CAN learn a new programming language in 3 months or less.

    I have a question I’m going into college next year and I want to work at a fang company and am willing to put in any amount of work and time it takes. Do you think a degree from a school like Purdue for cs (where I will go most likely) with a good gpa and then after going to a code academy like fullstack will put me on same status as someone who say got into uc Berkeley Stanford etc?How do I compete with this students who have a more prestigious cs college degree? I didn’t take high school as serious as a should a lot due to mental health issues and am unlikely to get into top cs programs. Love your videos!

    • @clem
      @clem  Před 5 lety +1

      It's hard to give an answer to your specific question, since everyone will judge you differently. However, I would say that you can *100%* get into a FANG company with your background; you just need to work hard and not let yourself think that you need to fit a certain mold to get into these companies, because that's simply not true. I've seen countless people at Google who did not have degrees from the stereotypical colleges that people think they need to attend.
      You got this! And glad that you're loving the videos!

    Just watched this because my dad is a high-level professional IT manager with broad field experience and he suggested I learn to code since I had to quit high school early due to family issues. When he went into explaining what they will teach I heard jargon, jargon, and jargon. I learned some of the basic concepts through free apps and online tutorials but none of them were based in any platforms or explain what you actually use the knowledge for. I really want to get a real career but I am concerned this may be more stressful then I can handle in a structured curriculum since I haven't been able to continue my education past my GED. How difficult is coding and is it difficult to self teach? I would prefer a teacher but finance is a major constraint.

    • @AZ-rg3rf
      @AZ-rg3rf Před 2 lety

      Its difficult but not impossible, as long as you have very strong patience and attention to detail. The critical piece IMHO is your working memory. It is where most of the work gets done, working with coding concepts, thinking about how to manipulating data structures. If you enjoy IQ puzzles at all, you will probably enjoy the CS field. If you don't, you will have a hard time with it at first but its possible to mold ypur brain that is adept at it (like what I had to do).

      When money and time are limited is extremely hard to learn a new skill. I'm trying to self teach coding using Python. Based on many of the videos that I have seen here on CZcams and the internet, Python is still a very important language and probably the easiest to learn because of it's simple syntax, plus most coding interviews questions will be available in Python. Javascript is a very popular language lately and super useful for front and back end software, the caveat based on expert opinions online is that is a little harder to learn than Python. With all this being said, I would suggest you check out Coursera, and look into "Python for everybody" taught by Dr Charles a proffesor at the university of Michigan. In my opinion this guy has dummed down coding and computer science principals even a 12 year old could understand/learn. And while this course won't turn you into a programmer/engineer, it will give you a solid foundation in Python and coding in general, it is from there that you can continue your learning, by the time you finish the course, you will feel more confident and ready to learn more or even land a new job as an entry level programmer.

    • @clem
      @clem  Před 5 lety +1

      Online bootcamps and nanodegree programs are certainly better than nothing. The only thing about some of these (namely, the nanodegree programs) is that I think they are quite a bit more advanced. I'm not sure if they're the best for a complete beginner.
