Fishing lead slit-shot can not only help you catch a cooler full of fish, it can aid in the eradication of some major varmints!! It's a very simple operation...

What I really like about this is that it’s simple and not over thought. Just open the crimp change the shot and recrimp. No buffer, wax, or unobtainium needed. You could do it with nothing but a pocket knife if needed. Even if you never do it it’s the kind of information that’s filed under “really good to know.” Thanks!

Wade Rush ,,,, Brother I been a sub of yours many many years ! You always tend to be very interesting ! Over 40 years ago I started doing this and also other things to shell like mixing different shot together in the same shell I always put hunted my friends . I tried the ones with wings but found out quickly they were better suited for close up defense round lol . The regular ones pattern much better . I have even used wire cutters to cut them into this split shot design, like 00 and ooo buck !Just lately they begin plating these and selling them to the public, my other idea of mixxed shot been around fir years . To think my ideas from my child hood are making others more richer blows me away . I still got a few more ideas tested and perfected by me over 49 years ago. I even invented putting lights in fishing lures way before it hit the public. I have done a few more things in the archery field also , if I ever meet a good investor we will def make a few bucks ourselves lol 😆 again I always enjoy watching your vids brother . I have made nets also buy drilling holes in different buck sizes and ran wire and heavy fishing line on them , today they sell these to make drone nets lol .drill some holes in them and use picture hanging wire to make some awesome rounds also. Take some finishing nails cut the heads off ,put a point on it and you have some awesome flachhet rounds !

Ok I went to Walmart to get some of these split shot and they didn't have the size you mentioned. They did have quite a few bags of number 3 split shot. So I bought a few of those to use. When I ran the telephone wire through and cramp down to make the cluster buck for some reason they would not fit perfectly. However, I found that number 3 split-shot fit inside the shot cup exactly like 00 Buckshot does in the hull. It took three stacks of three. But when I try to make the cluster bucks it seemed it pulled them too tight and make them stacked too high and the fold crimp would not go back properly. But number 3 split shot worked well by itself.

Put some of those egg sinkers in a round and test it. It itll pattern oblong shot would likly tumble and tear up anything and if it opens up over about 12-15 yds then itd be just fine for home defence. If it spreads abnormally fast then id shoot it out of an 18" or one of those shokwaves and see how it does. If its opening to about 1' at 10-15 yds thats be ideal for home intruders in my house. Yes, I stopped by my Local Walmart in Sierra Vista Az. an found that they no longer carry the $.94 Water Gremlin #7 or #5 split shot! (They carry much smaller .17" round shot with bases on the bottom!) I recognized a gun salesman that I had bought from before and asked him if they were going to stop carrying the Water Gremlin split shot; and he said they had removed all of them from the display and were not allowing them to be sold (as they were doing to many other products they used to offer!) He then specifically said they had learned that the larger split shot were being used by Buck Shot Reloaders and Cap and Ball Shooters so the size and function of the new replacement sinkers were intentionally brought on to dissuade those applications and he added "Can you imagine the liability involved?!" We told him that we DID NOT approve of their practice and would look for the Water Gremlin line elsewhere. Apparently he didn't care and quickly walked away! Sadly, I had only bought 14 packages and thought I could pick up 1 or 2 packs on every payday, but I was wrong!

Okay and update I live in a real small town we don't have any kind of Sporting Good shop let alone anywhere to get any reloading stuff. Buckshot is like $15 for five rounds if you can find it. So here I go again I bought a case of 100 rounds of Winchester Universal game and Target. No more Federal was available all sold out. So now I will be stocking up on the number 3 split-shot to be making up more cheap home defense rounds. Saving the lead up for when I get a mold.

I want buy anything gun related from walmart anymore they change their policy on a firearm purchase to 21 even on a muzzle loader and i pretty sure on ammo too, if you are old enough to be handed a gun and fight for this country you should be old enough to buy one , just my two cents, great video as always

My hunting mate used to do this out of his 20 gauge savage 24 as he couldn't get buckshot loads. He killed several wild pigs with these split sinkers including two with one shot! It works alright!

    Interesting Video
I agree swapping the lead shot into a field load would work well for self defense ( less than 20ft) and shooting varmints.
However, if hunting wild hogs and deer sized game is in order, why not use a shell with higher velocity (typicall high brass shells) and benefit from the extra velocity?
Yes, field loads are less expensive, but penetration is key when hunting with buckshot and this will be limited by the field shots lower velocity. As I've touched on penetration, closing the split shot should assist in preventing the shot from opening and affecting penetration, but there may be another option in the use of "Egg Sinkers". This type of shot is egg shaped with a hole through the middle. Unlike a split shot which may open and flatten, an egg sinker would be more likely to maintain its shape upon impact and potentially improve its penetration. If you see merit in this idea please share a video as I would be interested in the results.

i prefer to use bird shot for home defense. buck shot can over penetrate through walls, and in your home your loved one might be on other side of that wall. in my home ill never be farther than 20ft from someone i might have to shoot so #8 shot will take the fight out of an intruder in my home.... but this is a great how to video...... ps try the big slingshot bbs too.... my wally world has different sizes
